Vi følger aktivistenes liv over lang tid – i Raqqa, Tyrkia og Tyskland, og får oppleve kostnadene ved å være i krig, på flukt og i eksil. Filmen inneholder sterke bilder fra krigshandlinger, og har blitt beskrevet som den definitive filmen om krigen i Syria. Like sterkt som krigsbildenes brutalitet er de personlige skjebnene til aktivistene, ikke minst når de også må gå inn i rollen som flyktninger. Filmen er også en hyllest til modige journalister som utsetter seg for fare for å få fram kunnskap og fakta. Sjelden har klisjéen vond og viktig vært mer dekkende. Can the Internet stop terrorism? Matthew Heineman’s award-winning documentary, city of ghosts gives an up-close view of the young activists behind the website ‘Raqqa is being slaughtered silently’. When Islamic terrorist organisation ISIS took over their home city in 2014, they chose information as their weapon. We get to follow these young people in Raqqa, in Turkey and in Germany and witness the cost of warfare, of flight and of exile. The film is graphic in its depiction of war and has been described as a defining work on the Syrian conflict. The film’s depiction of the individual fates of these activists is as powerful as the brutality of its images of war, not least when they too have to take on the role of refugees. The movie is also a celebration of journalists, who bravely put themselves in danger for the cause of knowledge and information. It is truly a painful, and equally important film.
REGISSØREN Matthew Heineman (f. 1983) er en amerikansk regissør som står bak flere prisvinnende dokumentarer om kontroversielle temaer, vist på filmfestivaler verden over. Hans forrige film CARTEL LAND, om de meksikanske narko-kartellene, vant tre Emmys og ble nominert til Oscar i 2015. Han er nå i gang med sin første spillefilm. THE DIRECTOR Matthew Heineman (b. 1983) is an American director behind several multiple award-winning documentaries on controversial subjects, screened at film festivals around the world. His previous film, CARTEL LAND received three Emmy awards and was nominated for an Academy award in 2015. He is currently working on his first feature film.
