HORIZON EAST
Grensene mot øst er nærmere i nord, og veien til våre naboland kortere. Gjennom skiftende tider og politiske klima har Tromsø internasjonale filmfestival ønsket å fremme kulturutveksling og styrke båndene på tvers av landegrenser. Siden festivalen startet i 1991 har vi vist et bredt spekter av filmer som altfor sjelden når fram til norske kinolerreter.
Under festivalens første år viste vi et par filmer som offisielt var produsert i Sovjetunionen. Vi har siden hatt filmer fra området gjennom 27 begivenhetsrike år, fra Sovjets sammenbrudd og fram til i dag. Fra 2002 har Horisont Øst vært TIFFs faste program for ny spillefilm fra Russland, Baltikum og Finland.
In the spirit of the historically close ties between Tromsø and our neighbors in the East, Tromsø International Film Festival aims to promote cultural exchange between our countries by presenting new films from the northeast. Starting with a selection of officially produced Soviet films at the very first TIFF edition in 1991, we have continued to present a selection of titles from the region that otherwise would not be screened in Norwegian cinemas.
Since 2002, Horizon East has been a regular sidebar for feature films and documentaries from Russia, Finland, and the Baltic states.

Vi er langt inne i Sakha i østlige Sibir. Her følger vi en eldre mann, Ignat, i en periode preget av store omveltninger og begivenheter som er så vel dramatiske, tragiske og triste, som oppmuntrende og glade. Et uventet vennskap mellom den gamle mannen og en ung gutt oppstår.
the bonfire tegner et portrett av en mann, et vennskap, en landsby og den yakutiske kulturen. Den behandler livets kompleksitet og skjørhet på en var, varm og realistisk måte – ikke i storformat og skimrende farger, men ekte og vakkert. Realismen forsterkes også ved at alle rollene spilles av de faktiske innbyggerne i landsbyen.
Deep in the Republic of Sakha, eastern Siberia, we follow the elderly Ignat in a time of life-changing events that are both dramatic, tragic, sad, encouraging and happy. An unexpected friendship between the old man and a young boy is formed.
the bonfire paints a portrait of a man, a friendship, a village and of the Yakut culture. It shows the complexity and fragility of life in a tender, warm and realistic manner; Not with wide brush strokes or shimmering colors, but genuinely and beautifully. The authenticity is enhanced by the fact that actual people in the village play all the characters. No professional actors are involved.

Dmitrij Davidov (f. 1983) er fra Yakutiai Sibir, Russland. THE BONFIRE er hans debutfilm. Den hadde premiere på Busan internasjonale filmfestival i Sør-Korea, og ble belønnet med prisen for beste drama ved imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival i Toronto. Davidov er selvlært innen film og jobber til daglig som direktør for en skole i Sakha.
THE DIRECTOR
Dmitry Davydov (b. 1983) is a Russian director from Yakutia, Siberia. His debut feature THE BONFIRE premiered at the Busan International Film Festival in South Korea, and won the best dramatic film award on the imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival in Toronto. Davydov is an autodidact filmmaker, and works as a schoolteacher and principal in Sakha.

EUTHANIZER

Veijo Haukka er en ensom og innesluttet mann. Folk i bygda kommer til han for å få avlivet kjæledyr, siden han gjør jobben for en langt lavere pris enn veterinæren. Men til tross for sin bisarre bigeskjeft er Veijlo betydelig mer glad i dyr enn mennesker. Når han nekter å ta livet av hunden til Petri, en moralsk tvilsom småkjeltring med høyreekstrem omgangskrets, brygger det opp til problemer. Det viser seg at veien fra å drepe katter til å gå løs på mennesker ikke nødvendigvis er så lang.
euthanizer er en kullsvart komedie med en moralsk undertone som svinger fra det morsomme til det motbydelige i løpet av sekunder. Hovedpersonen fremstår som en slags rural finsk Travis Bickle (taxi driver) i sin enfoldighet og rettferdighetssøkende voldshunger. Filmen inneholder en del scener som kan oppfattes som forstyrrende.
Veijo Haukka, a mechanic in his 50s, is a bitter and lonely man. People visit him when their pets need to be euthanized, as he is willing to do the job cheaper than the local vet. Veijo is fonder of animals than people, and when the wannabe neo-nazi Petri wants him to kill a dog, Veijo refuses. Petri and his right-wing companions do not approve of this and soon trouble is brewing. But, as the self-proclaimed “Soldiers of Finland” soon will discover, killing pets is not so different from killing people.
euthanizer is a dark comedy about morally flawed people in the Finnish countryside. Veijo Haukka seems to be a Finnish version of Travis Bickle, Robert De Niro’s famous character in taxi driver, searching for justice and vengeance with all the wrong means. euthanizer contains scenes of graphic violence that some may find disturbing.

Teemu Nikki (f. 1975) er en finsk regissør, manusforfatter og produsent. Nikki har regissert en rekke reklamefilmer og musikkvideoer. Han er likevel mest kjent for sitt arbeid med #LOVEMILLA, en TV-serie som ble presentert både gjennom tv og ulike sosiale medier, flere år før SKAM. EUTHANIZER er hans debutfilm.

Teemu Nikki (b. 1975) is a Finnish director, writer and producer. He has directed a number of commercials, music videos and short films and has had success with his work on #LOVEMILLA, a popular TV-series for youth in Finland. EUTHANIZER is his debut as a feature film director.

25-årige Ivan bor i en liten, iskald og avsidesliggende russisk landsby. Han jobber som kupasser, er lojal, stoisk og beskjeden og lever et rutinepreget og begivenhetsløst liv – helt til han en dag stoppes av en fremmed. Han tilbys jobb, og blir straks og uten spørsmål med til den ukjente, forjettede storbyen. Den ytre handlingen er like enkel som historiefortellingen er liketil og uten store fiksfakserier.
head. two ears er en liten, lavmælt film som peker på store, globale og sosiopolitiske utfordringer i vår tid. Samtidig behandles universelle, eksistensielle spørsmål: Hva drømmer du om, og hva er du villig til å gjøre for å oppnå det? Og hva er egentlig et godt liv?
25-year-old Ivan is living in a small, freezing cold and remote Russian village. He works as a cowhand and leads a rather routine and uneventful life. Then one day a stranger approaches him and offers him a job, and without any hesitation or questions, Ivan follows him to the promising, unknown city. The story is as simple as the narrative is straightforward and without much ado.
head. two ears is a small and quiet film, addressing some of the biggest global and sociopolitical challenges of our time. Universal, existential questions are the essence of the film. What do you dream of and what are you willing to do to make your drams come true? What is ultimately a “good life”?

Vitaly Suslin (f. 1986) regnes som en av Russlands mest lovende unge filmskapere, og er både manusforfatter, produsent og regissør. Han er født i Novovoronezh og har studert ved det medisinske universitet Voronezh State Medical og deretter ved regilinja ved Moskva VGIK.
THE DIRECTOR
Vitaly Suslin (b. 1986) is considered as one of Russia’s most notable young directors, a multi-talent that writes, directs and produces himself. He was born in Novovoronezh and graduated from the Voronezh State Medical University and later studied film direction at the Moscow VGIK.

Kattunger, ishockey, vennskap og kjærlighet er noen av ingrediensene i denne sjarmbomben av en film om ungdommelig opprør og idealisme. En romantisk komedie som både er sommerlig og lett, men samtidig helt snurrig og forvridd – slik den første kjærligheten ofte kan være.
Bestevennene Satu og Heidi er ihuga aktivister, de kjemper mot kommersialisering av kjærligheten. Ett virkemiddel er å sabotere andre folk sine bryllup. Men kjærligheten setter også vennskapet på prøve. Dette er skuespillerdebuten for begge de to jentene i hovedrollene, Inka Haapamäki og Rosa Honkonen, og de eier lerretet!
Best friends Satu and Heidi preach that true love is not for sale as they go around sabotaging posh weddings. Then one of the girls falls head over heels in love with the local hockey star Lauri.
Love and friendship is put to the test in this quirky romantic comedy. The film is summery and light, but at the same time completely whimsical and distorted – as young love can be. We crash head on into a hormone storm involving a whole row of characters. This is the first film for both two lead actresses, Inka Haapamäki and Rosa Honkonen, and they absolutely own the screen.

22 600 kilometer – det er lengden på Russlands kystlinje mot Nordishavet: en grense mellom livet og den evige kulden. the way to the arctic gir oss et unikt innblikk i hvordan Russland tok en ledende rolle i utforskningen av Arktis: gjenåpningen av Nordvestpassasjen, etableringen av den første flytende forskningsstasjonen, gjentatte ekspedisjoner til Nordpolen, og opprettingen av en atomubåtflåte i nord.
Hvert steg av «det arktiske prosjektet» har hatt utgangspunkt i den eneste isfrie havna i Nord-Russland: Murmansk. Denne 100 år gamle byens historie er uløselig knyttet til Russlands ambisjoner for den arktiske regionen. Gjennom store mengder tidligere upublisert arkivmateriale forteller filmen historien om prisen Russland har betalt for disse ambisjonene.
Twenty-two thousand six hundred kilometers. That is the length of the Russian coastline of the Arctic Ocean. The border between life and the eternal cold. the way to the arctic offers an exclusive perspective on the history of how Russia took a leading role in Arctic exploration: the reclaiming of the Northern Sea Route, the launch of the first drifting research station, victorious expeditions to the North Pole – as well as the establishment of a fleet of nuclear submarines.
Each stage of “the Arctic project” started from the only ice-free port in Northern Russia: Murmansk. The 100-year history of the city is inseparably connected to the ambitions of the Russian part of the Arctic region. Rich with previously unseen archival footage, the way to the arctic tells the story of the price the country paid for these ambitions.

Svetlana Bokova (f. 1966) er utdannet filolog, og har jobbet lenge som journalist. Siden 2007 har hun vært tilknyttet Rec.A filmstudio, sammen med Valerij Gavel, hennes med-regissør, fotograf og klipper.
