Kan internett stoppe terrorisme? I Matthew Heinemans prisbelønte dokumentar city of ghosts: raqqa kommer vi tett på de unge aktivistene bak nettstedet «Raqqa is being slaugthered silently», som velger informasjon som våpen når den islamistiske terrororganisasjonen ISIS tar over hjembyen deres i 2014. Filmen inneholder sterke bilder fra krigshandlinger, og har blitt beskrevet som den definitive filmen om krigen i Syria. Like sterkt som krigsbildenes brutalitet er de personlige skjebnene til aktivistene, ikke minst når de også må gå inn i rollen som flyktninger. Filmen er også en hyllest til modige journalister som utsetter seg for fare for å få fram kunnskap og fakta. Sjelden har klisjéen vond og viktig vært mer dekkende.

Can the Internet stop terrorism? Matthew Heineman’s award-winning documentary, city of ghosts gives an up-close view of the young activists behind the website ‘Raqqa is being slaughtered silently’. When Islamic terrorist organisation ISIS took over their home city in 2014, they chose information as their weapon. We get to follow these young people in Raqqa, in Turkey and in Germany and witness the cost of warfare, of flight and of exile.

The film is graphic in its depiction of war and has been described as a defining work on the Syrian conflict. The film’s depiction of the individual fates of these activists is as powerful as the brutality of its images of war, not least when they too have to take on the role of refugees. The movie is also a celebration of journalists, who bravely put themselves in danger for the cause of knowledge and information. It is truly a painful, and equally important film.

the insult is Lebanon’s candidate as Best foreign language film for the 2017 Oscars, and it has already received several awards on international film festivals – including the Best actor award for El Basha in Venice.

Nouredine lever et vanlig liv med vanlige problemer, for eksempel en hypokondrisk mor som forteller ham at hun vil dø om han ikke gifter seg. Han gifter seg derfor etter morens ønske med barndomsvenninnen Yasmina. Den politiske uroen i Algerie utvikler seg til en borgerkrig etter at det populære islamistiske partiet (FIS) blir forbudt, og Nouredine og Yasminas liv påvirkes av konflikten mellom den algeriske hæren og islamistiske terrorister.

Det mørke tiåret (1990-tallet) og den algeriske borgerkrigen er en ofte glemt konflikt som har mange paralleller til vår tid. Filmen forteller om hvordan vanlige menneskers liv i arabiske land påvirkes av fundamentalisme, og viser gjennom sterke portretter av en familie og deres nærmeste hva brutale konflikter gjør med menneskene som rammes.

Nouredine lives an ordinary life with everyday problems, like his hypochondriac mother telling him she will die if he does not find a wife. And so, following her wishes, he marries his childhood friend Yasmina. When the Algerian government bans a popular islamist party (FIS), political unrest turns into civil war, and the conflict between the army and islamist terrorists becomes a factor in the young couple’s lives.

The dark decade (1990s) and the Algerian civil war make up an oft-forgotten conflict with many parallels with our own time. This film delves into how the lives of ordinary people in Arab countries are affected by fundamentalism, and what gruesome conflict does to those it strike through powerful portraits of a family and people around them

Filmen starter med bryllupet mellom kurdiske Nuri og tyske Katja, som finner sted i fengselet hvor Nuri soner en narkodom. Kort etter rammes familien av høyreekstrem terror, og Katjas liv blir snudd opp ned. Familie og venner støtter henne som best de kan, men tankene hennes kverner i søken etter de skyldige, og grunnene for et så meningsløst angrep. Hun vil ha rettferdighet, koste hva det koste vil.

Regissør Akin er inspirert av virkelige nynazistiske angrep og rettsaker i sitt arbeid med filmen, og med ut av intet utfordrer han det europeiske fiendebildet hvor mannen med mørkt hår og muslimsk bakgrunn automatisk sees på som trusselen. Filmen er dels en kjærlighetshistorie, dels et karakterdrevet drama om terror og tap, dels rettsaksdrama og dels thriller. Den var i hovedprogrammet i Cannes, hvor Diane Kruger vant prisen for beste kvinnelige hovedrolle for sin sterke skildring av sorg, kamp for rettferdighet – og hevn. Filmmusikken er ved Josh Homme fra bandet Queens of the Stone Age.

The film opens with the wedding of Kurdish Nuri and German Katja, taking place in a prison, where Nuri is serving a drug sentence. Shortly after, their family becomes victim of right-wing extremist terrorism – turning Katja’s life upside down. Her family and friends do their best to support her in her grief, but her mind is set on finding the culprits responsible for the attack. She wants justice, no matter what the cost.

Inspired by real-life neo-Nazi attacks and trials, Akin challenges the European notion of who the enemy is; here the dark-haired man from a Muslim background is not the threat. in the fade is part love story, part character study about terrorism and loss, part courtroom drama, and part thriller. The film was included in the main programme in Cannes, where Diane Kruger won the award for best female actor in a lead role, for her powerful performance of Katja’s grief, vengeance, and the struggle for justice. The film’s soundtrack is by Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age.

Unge menn som oppsøker krigssoner, hva kan gå galt? road to guantanamo forteller den virkelige historien om de såkalte «Tipton Three», tre unge britiske muslimer som på reise i Afghanistan like etter 11. september 2001 blir mistenkt for å være terrorister. Uten rettsak og dom havner de unge mennene i den amerikanske fangeleiren Guantanamo Bay på Cuba. Filmens tematikk føles like aktuell i en tid hvor krigen mot terror fremdeles har store konsekvenser for så vel menneskerettigheter som internasjonal politikk. Three young British Muslims venture on a trip from Pakistan to Afghanistan in 2001. In a time of turmoil after the 9/11 attacks they become suspected of alliance with al-Qaeda and sent to US’ detention camp at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. Winterbottom and Whitecross’ documentary the road to guantanamo tells the story about how they could be sent to prison without a trial as well as what happened to them there. Based on interviews with the three men, historical footage and re-enactments the film shades light on the darker side of the war on terror.

The film feels highly relevant in a time when international terrorism is still making the headlines. Although Guantanamo rarely makes the news these days, the camp remains open, and according to President Donald Trump, should be used to detain “bad dudes” also in the future.
