Utmerkede filmer gir ikke nødvendvis et utmerket festivalprogram, og et utmerket festivalprogram er ikke nødvendigvis nett og velbalansert. Likevel: Årets tiff-program har en hel rekke filmer som innbyr til refleksjon omkring begivenheter – her hjemme og i utlandet – som har preget oss alle i året som har gått. Filmer som vil engasjere både følelsene og intellektet, filmer som tar samtida på pulsen, filmer som ikke vil slippe tak i oss.

Årets åpningsfilm med den mer eller mindre misvisende tittelen snøen på kilimanjaro kunne ha vært et takknemlig anslag til en hvilken som helst filmfestival, når som helst. Men vi er spesielt glade for å kunne åpne nettopp tiff 2012 med en film som tar opp reelle samtidsproblemer som arbeidsledighet og omsorgssvikt uten å bukke under for kynisme og pessimisme. Denne filmen er med rette blitt kalt «filmen med det store hjertet» – det er en film med overskudd nok til oss alle. Akkurat det vi trenger nå. God festival! A list of excellent films does not necessarily constitute a festival program, and a festival program is not necessarily a neat package. That said, this year’s tiffprogram contains a whole range of films that are conducive to reflection around events in Norway as well as in the rest of the world that have affected us in the past year. Films that will engage us emotionally and intellectually, films that take the pulse of our times, films that won’t let go of us. There is no question that this year’s opening film the snows of kilimanjaro (the rather misleading title aside) would be a pitch-perfect kick start for any film festival – anywhere, anytime. We are however especially happy to be able to open this particular edition of the Tromsø International Film Festival with a film that addresses pressing social issues such as downsizing, unemployment, and child neglect without succumbing to cynicism and pessimism. It has rightly been called a film with a big heart – a film with more than enough warmth to go around. Just what the world, and this year’s festival, needs. Enjoy the festival.
