Trinity Dance Programs Boys in Groove (BIG) and Guys in Groove (GIG) Ms Laura Boynes Dance Coordinator
“The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it and join the dance.” Alan W Watts This statement could not be truer for the exceptionally talented members of the Trinity Dance programs and the action-packed year that was 2015. This year has seen many changes in the Dance program with predecessors Ms Elise Kukulka and Ms Aimee Smith leaving Trinity College to pursue exciting career opportunities and my appointment as the new dance coordinator half way through the school year. These events have undeniably affected both groups, but their commitment and determination to continue to work tirelessly every week speaks strongly of their courage and maturity to accept and flourish with change. After making it through the very popular audition process, the dance students started off the year with training in street and break dance techniques. These skills were then used, along with some of their own choreography, to make up the first routines of the term.

In July, BIG and GIG impressed parents and friends at the Trinity Dance Showcase with a mixture of hip hop, break dance, tap and jazz routines. Some of the senior boys presented original solos much to the audiences delight and I had the pleasure of meeting parents for the first time. Shortly after, it was time for Trinity’s annual performance in the Catholic Schools’ Performing Arts Festival at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. Both groups presented energetic performances to an audience of hundreds, and GIG won a certificate of merit for their routine Please Ya. In October, GIG performed one last time for the Senior Presentation Night at the Perth Concert Hall. Once again, the boys wowed the crowd and left everyone wanting more. We were sad to see the Year 12s off, especially our hard-working Dance captain, Michael Wright (12.3), and Vice-Captain, Giordano Ronzan (12.7). BIG worked hard throughout Term 4 to prepare a very cool routine for their final performance of the year at the Junior School Presentation Night, which was a great success! Lastly, I would like to thank Dr Robert Braham and the music staff for welcoming me this semester, and to the Trinity community for your support. My greatest acknowledgment is for BIG and GIG: thank you for sticking by me on this journey and here’s to next year! Auditions for both groups will be in Week one of 2016. See you all there.
