The highlight for Trinity Pipes & Drums was our successful involvement in the Presbyterian Ladies’ College Centenary All School Pipe Band Competition over the Easter weekend of April 2015.

Seven school bands participated:

• Trinity College WA • Scotch College WA • Presbyterian Ladies’ College WA • St Joseph’s Institute, Singapore • Great Southern Grammar, Albany WA • Georgian Pipers, Malaysia • Presbyterian Ladies’ College, Sydney NSW

This weekend was to be our boys’ first competitive experience and an opportunity to achieve their potential. During the Friday evening, a welcome dinner to meet and greet was held at PLC for all the international, interstate and local students and staff.

On Saturday morning there was a spectacular parade of the pipes and drums to the city streets, as part of City of Perth’s Easter celebrations. All the bands marched from Hay Street mall, down Barrack Street to Murray Street mall and congregated in Forrest Chase. This was a great opportunity for the students to savour the enthusiasm of the crowd of shoppers and onlookers. Each band performed on the main stage to the applause from a receptive audience.

The competition was held on Sunday at the Scotch College Oval in Swanbourne. The bands were mainly judged on musical performance, but also deportment, dress, drill and punctuality. The format was arranged in two performance sections; first was a set of marches, second a medley of each band’s choice. In addition, part of the assessment included each band’s punctual arrival at the start point and method of entry into and exit from the performance arena.

The conclusion to the day was a massed band with all the students marching together as one ensemble. This was followed by the presentation of awards to the successful bands.

It was a fantastic experience for our boys and to their credit they were inspired and determined to perform well. We are very proud of our second place in the march set and overall third place in the competition.

I would like to thank all the parents for their help and am delighted with the feedback that they also enjoyed the weekend activities and are very proud of their boys.

The event was a great way for the boys to focus on a common goal; improving their musical and leadership skills and sharing the excitement of a competitive experience.

Not only do students learn the skills of piping and drumming in a band, they also learn many complex skills such as respect, self-discipline, confidence, focus, teamwork, building a community spirit and the values of tradition.

Trinity Pipes & Drums offer students the opportunity to perform at events such as school assemblies, concerts, presentation nights, Anzac Day and Carnevale 2015. Also, students may participate in external competitions as soloists or as a band and, hopefully, the opportunity to go on a tour.

I encourage students to consider a music experience with the Trinity Pipes & Drums and become a part of this great tradition.
