The 2015 football season began with a group of 35 excited senior players taking the ‘red eye’ flight to Melbourne late on the evening of Easter Sunday.
Because of the early morning arrival on the Monday, no sooner had we arrived at the hotel, than we were off getting ready to watch Hawthorn take on Geelong at the MCG. This was the first of what was a weekend of highlights. Playing fixtures against Geelong College, Scotch College and Emmanuel College (South Australia) as well as watching the Dockers beat Geelong at Skilled Stadium will remain in our memories for a long while. Other highlights included guided tours of the Collingwood, Carlton and Western Bulldogs football clubs, attending the audience of The Project and seeing Dave Hughes live at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Hopefully, this tour was to prepare the group for a successful season ahead. It is fair to say, that the success achieved on the field was not what we had hoped for in our planning. Having a bye for round one allowed the players to freshen up before taking on Guildford Grammar School in what we knew would be a rugged encounter. Having led at quarter time and even having dominated most of the possession in the first half, Guildford got on top in the third quarter and restricted our opportunities up forward. In round two we took on Wesley College at home in some of the most horrendous weather conditions seen on a football field in recent years.

Trinity ground out a good 44 point win under very difficult circumstances. A narrow loss in the next round to Aquinas by 15 points after again being in a winning position was disappointing for all involved with the team although we did bounce back with a solid victory of Christ Church Grammar School in the Thursday afternoon fixture winning by 71 points.
Unfortunately, a mixture of injuries and lack of consistency made the season difficult for all involved. Serious knee injuries are the curse of the modern day footballer and this injury ended the season of several players including Daniel Gileno (12.3), Zen Best (12.2), Patrick Fry (12.7), Sheldon Dias (12.7) and Fraser Barns (11.3). Successive losses to Scotch College, Hale School and Guildford Grammar School again tested the resolve of the squad. There was a number of players who suffered serious injuries and, as a result, younger players were given opportunities to test themselves at the top schoolboy level.
In what was the side’s best and most enjoyable game of the season, the Thursday afternoon fixture against Wesley came down to the final minutes with Trinity prevailing winners by one goal. The only other win for the season came on yet another wet and wild Saturday morning at Christ Church. A strong breeze assisting scoring at one end made for a scrappy contest where the Trinity side did just enough to again win by six points.
Whilst the season didn’t deliver the results that we would have liked, there is still a great deal to reflect on with some pride and appreciation. This year, Mr Peter Oliver took on the Head Coach position with Mr John Montagu (’74) taking on an assistant role. Peter has enormous knowledge of the game and also has the ability to communicate fairly and authoritatively with the players whom he has under his guidance. His philosophy to not only produce good footballers, but good people, is central to what we are trying to achieve as a club. John would be the most experienced coach at Alcock Cup level and his guidance and support for our players has proven invaluable.
There was also some personal success for three Year 10 boys: Brandon Starcevich (10.1), Blake Pescud (10.2) and Jaxon Cahill (10.2), who were named in the State schoolboys’ football squad and who will form the nucleus of what is hoped to be a strong side for the next two years.
Trinity continued to experience considerable success in the non-1st XVIII teams. The 10As and 7As lost just one game for the year each with the 9As losing just two games. The 8As finished with a respectable five wins and five losses. Congratulations should go to Mr Michael Murphy’s 9B team who was undefeated for the season.
I thank the coaches for all teams from Year 7 through to the 1st XVIII. The commitment of these staff provide our students with the wonderful opportunities such as playing for the blue and green guernsey. I thank the parents who assist with various aspects of the football program. Assistance on game day to fill drink bottles, goal umpire and time-keep is greatly appreciated by the College staff. I make special mention of Mrs Janet Flematti who has been a major contributor to every event that the Friends of Football have held since her eldest son commenced at the College in 2007. I thank Mr Storme John for his generous donation of medical equipment for the third year in a row that has reduced our costs significantly again this year.
To the Year 12s who finish their school football days this year, if you are not going on to play at WAFL level, please consider continuing your careers at Trinity Aquinas Amateur Football Club. To the younger players in the club, we look forward to what will hopefully be a successful 2016.
