The Lawe Davies Cup was returned to Trinity College at the end of the 2015 Soccer season.
Miss Amanda Marocchi 1st XI Soccer Manager
The Lawe Davies Cup was named after the long-serving Headmaster of Guildford Grammar School and since its launch in 1987 Guildford Grammar has won it twice, Christ Church Grammar School, Scotch College and Aquinas College (three times each), Wesley College (four times), Hale School (eight times) and as of 2015, Trinity College has brought it home an outstanding 14 times!
The 2015 season was one of excitement and great success. Our 1st XI Soccer team regained the cup in their final fixture and many of our Middle School teams topped their respective tables, proving that soccer at Trinity College once again shone above the rest. To produce consistent on-field success requires dedicated players and coaches and I take this opportunity to thank our committed players, their parents and the coaches for their tireless efforts. A special mention goes to the staff involved in the College Soccer program, as their enthusiasm and commitment is vital in the development of our players across all ages. The 2015 Soccer season began at the last fixture of 2014, which was a defeat at home to Guildford Grammar; a bitter end to a season of the boys not reaching their potential. Nine players out of the year’s starting 11 were present that day, and together they knew, that with the additions made to the squad and a new attitude towards the team, they could move forward and achieve much this season. The fixtures began, with the first game, symbolically enough, being against Guildford. On the first day of the season we saw a level of application and intensity which had been missing and it was obvious that there was little weakness within each sub-unit on the pitch, with every man playing his part.
Due to the other two teams in contention, Christ Church and Scotch dropping points against each other, combined with upsets against Guildford and Aquinas, Trinity was in a position where only one point was needed from the final two games of the season to bring home the cup. However, these last two games were against Christ Church, first, and then Scotch. On a rainy morning at Christ Church came the first opportunity to snatch the title. Unfortunately the boys stumbled and went down 3-2. This meant the title was up for grabs in the final fixture against Scotch College. Nerves were high and the excitement level extreme as the boys took their places. The game was intense with Scotch College leading for most of the match. Our boys never gave up, showing tremendous commitment to the cause and finally they equalised, which gave them a hand on the title.
In the last five minutes the crowd was on their feet, a rattling crossbar and with numerous opportunities go begging. The whistle blew and the boys earned themselves a 1-1 draw leaving them to share the Lawe Davies Cup with Christ Church Grammar.
I would like to express my sincerest thanks and congratulate our amazing leaders, Captain Joseph Marino, and Vice-Captain Alexander Ishida-Livings, for their tireless efforts in maintaining focus and guiding the younger boys throughout the season. A special mention must go to all the parents who have assisted throughout the season with the presentation night, fundraising and promoting the Trinity Soccer Club community – your efforts are truly appreciated. Finally a huge thank you goes to our retiring 1st XI Coach Shaun Murphy (‘87) for his valuable contribution to the Trinity College Soccer community. It has been an absolute pleasure working alongside the former Socceroo and Trinity Old Boy. He has guided, mentored and educated our boys over the past eight years, and we are forever grateful for his efforts. Finally, thank you to everyone involved in Soccer at the College. I step away from this role with full confidence in the Trinity Soccer community and wish them every bit of success for the future.
