Mr Bobby Emmanuel Coach 1st VI Volleyball

This year the Trinity College Volleyball Club continued to be very successful; largely thanks to a strong level of community support from parents, commitment from Old Boys who filled coaching roles, dedication of teachers and the desire of the students to train hard and win volleyball games. For the first time in history, Trinity College won the Brother Carrigg Shield for the third year in a row.

The Middle School volleyball program, spearheaded by Mr John Overton yielded great results in 2015. Most pleasing is the depth of talent and numbers within each year group; however, on occasion this has resulted in a scratch match. It is commendable to see the lower age groups put up their hands for the opportunity to compete and their willingness to fill in and put others before themselves for the good of the club. The Middle School teams won a vast majority of their games and, on more than one occasion, a clean sweep of all opposing teams. Special thanks goes to Ms Rita Basilio, Ms Kate Raphael, Mr Sam Mettam (’10), Mr Julian Fritz, Mr Brayden Keizer (’14) and Mr John Ricciardi for their support and dedication in preparing our teams over the season.

Once again, our senior volleyball teams enjoyed an outstanding season with some close matches against the stronger teams. A talented bunch of players in the Year 10 teams, coached by Mrs Claudia Kelly and Mr Peter Fitzgerald (’13) showcased the depth in the upcoming teams. Currently three of the Year 10s are playing in the 1st team and when they join their compatriots in future years, this will make them a very formidable team indeed.

Our 3rd VI team experienced many victories and continued to develop a strong sense of camaraderie under the tutelage of Mrs Rosa West. The mighty 2nds continued to grow in confidence and skill. They remained undefeated throughout the season and were guided by the very calm and stoic Mr Craig Adams. Congratulations to the team on remaining undefeated for three years in a row. The depth and talent in these teams are a testament to the strong volleyball culture at Trinity College.

The preparation for the defence of the Brother Carrigg Shield started in Term 4 2014 with a large squad of motivated players trying out for 1st team selection. As the team started to form, it was evident that there was an abundance of talent and skill; however, the biggest challenge was going to be team cohesion and performing at their best in the tough matches. The 2014 Term 4 competition was encouraging with only one loss in a close match to Aquinas College. With this result in hand, the team

headed to Albany for the Trinity College Albany Volleyball Camp. The focus at the camp was mainly team-building and cohesion as well as some joint training sessions with our hosts Great Southern Grammar. At the end the boys were exhausted but the feeling in the team was very positive and the levels of self-belief and belief in the team were at an all-time high.

The Term 1 competition began strongly but the toughest challenge would be the second match against Aquinas College in their gym. Trinity College was victorious in this epic struggle and remained focussed until the end of the season to claim the Brother Carrigg Shield for the third time in a row. The team’s commitment and endeavour to fulfil their goals set early in the pre-season, is a testament to the character of the young men in this team. Congratulations to Captain Alex Ishida-Livings (12.5) and Vice-captains Jake Reid (12.5) and Mitchell Bristow-Stagg (12.1) on leading the team to this historic third win of the Brother Carrigg Shield. Special thanks goes to Mr John Overton for his assistance and outstanding contributions to the 1st VI program. This year Trinity College entered two teams in the Winter Junior League and we now have more boys than ever playing in the Perth Volleyball League. Over the course of the year, many students attended State trials and the following have been selected into WA State teams.

Under 17 squad: Nichollas Montero (10.4) and Leon Formato (10.1)

Under 16 team: Aidan Correa (10.5) and Daniel Fitzgerald (9.2)

Congratulations to Aidan Correa (10.5), Leon Formato (10.1) and Nichollas Montero (10.4) who were selected to attend the Australian Institute of Sport camp in Bendigo during the December 2014 holidays. Nichollas Montero (10.4) was also invited to a camp in July for possible selection into the Junior Australian teams.

The annual Volleyball Awards Nights marked a wonderful show of support by parents, family members, supporters and players of the club. I extend my thanks to all those who have given up their valuable time and energy to the club and contributed along the way.

Personally, I thank outgoing committee members Mr Paul Bendotti (’82) (President), Mrs Katie Bristow-Stagg (Secretary), Mrs Michelle Reid (Treasurer) and Mr Ralph Livings (IT & Web Design) for their time and support for Trinity volleyball. Your invaluable contributions have been directly responsible for the success of the club. Thank you for all your hard work and I look forward to a very bright future and the continued success of Trinity volleyball.
