Athletics

With an improved Mann Oval to train on and a belief that Trinity could return to the top of the PSA athletics ladder, all students and staff involved entered the season with enthusiasm, positivity and a common goal.

From the first pre-season meetings, large numbers of boys from Years 7–12 were keen to make an impact on the PSA Athletics Carnival. After many dreams and goals slipped away throughout the winter season this carnival would be the last opportunity for Trinity to bring home some silverware for 2015.

The PSA athletics season is conducted over a four week period in which coaches are expected to train their athletes at three or four sessions a week. The coaches involved are made up of Trinity staff, parents and external individuals with experienced athletics backgrounds. Thank you to all staff involved in the 2015 season. It was certainly not through a lack of effort or support from any aspect of Trinity athletics that Scotch College was able to win the Alcock Shield on the day.

Thanks is extended to all parents of our athletes for their support during such a short yet intense season. Your assistance at Saturday morning trainings as well as supplying morning tea was greatly appreciated.

The inter-school carnival conducted at the WA Athletics Stadium is a day full of high expectations, outstanding performances and a lot of hard work. The Trinity athletes can hold their heads high as they conducted themselves in a very professional manner. They were humble in victory and gracious in defeat. Thank you to all athletes for your attitude and dedication to our goal on that special Friday in September. The 2015 season certainly has some unfinished business that the 2016 team will be looking to address and bring the Alcock Shield back to Trinity College.

Under 13 Age Division

The under 13 age division boys were given their first taste of a high school athletics season. With enthusiasm high, boys spent the first week of training trialling for a number of events and understanding where they might compete on the day of the Inters. Special mention goes to Jojo Parise (7.5) for setting a new 200 metre record and being awarded Trinity’s top points scorer for his division.

In an age division dominated by Scotch College and Aquinas College, the Trinity under 13 high jumpers and hurdlers won their respective events. This year group will benefit from the experience this year and I hope to see them all again for the 2016 season. Under 14 Age Division

The boys in our under 14 age division finished second overall and just three points from age group winners, Hale School. With strong athletes in this division they were able to win the 400 metre, 800 metre, shot put and sprints, while finishing a very respectable second in discus, high jump, and long jump.

Eric Bonney (7.5) was awarded Trinity’s highest points scorer for the under 14 division while Semisi Amato (8.5) set a new PSA record for discus. Special mention goes to Luca Rossi (8.6) and Alexander Rossi (8.6) for their outstanding performances in their 800 metre and 400 metre events.

Under 15 Age Division

Thomas Throssell (9.4) competed in four events and finished with three first places and one second place on his way to finishing second overall in his age group. He also set new PSA records with his performances in the 400 metre and long jump.

The under 15 Trinity athletes finished on top of their age group in the 200 metre, 400 metre, 800 metre, long jump, and triple jump. This age group has a number of outstanding competitors and I look forward to seeing them in 2016.

Under 16 Age Division

The Trinity under 16 age group was led by Brandon Starcevich (10.1) who top scored for the College in this division with 61 points, including a new PSA record of 6.41 metres in long jump. This age group finished third overall behind a very strong Scotch College and Aquinas College and were very competitive across all disciplines. Winning the high jump and shot put events, and a number of second places demonstrates the effort put in by this group of boys.

This group has a lot of potential and some very talented athletes. I hope they will all return as strong leaders for the 2016 athletics season.

Under 17 Age Division

Tamba Lebbie (11.3) scored 69 points and was not only the highest Trinity athlete in the age division but was also awarded top points scorer for the entire under 17 age group. His competitive nature allowed him to be successfully selected to compete in five events on the day. He was supported by a number of athletes including Jhonny Lutula (11.4), Callum Lovegrove (11.4) and new PSA record holder Mason Nicolaou (11.1) who broke the standing recording in the 200 metre. Unfortunately for Mason, his record didn’t stand for long as the Hale School athlete in the next race set another new record. Open Age Division

Isaac Curtis (12.5) and his Vice-Captains: Jarrod Ng (12.6), Giordan Prosper (12.1), Isiaah Caton (12.5) and Hayden Da Rui (12.1) did a fantastic job this year leading the Trinity athletics team. Their friendly nature and mature attitude was infectious within the team and, through a new mentoring program, younger members of the College definitely built some new relationships with the older boys.

Thank you to all outgoing members of the open age division for your contribution to the College athletics program. Your leadership this year was outstanding and the 2016 athletics team will appreciate you coming back next year to assist.

The 2015 Trinity athletics team can stand proud and be very satisfied with their performance. They were a united team that formed bonds across year groups and across events. There was a very positive feeling that Trinity is not far away from bringing the Alcock Shield back to Trinity. Unfortunately it was a much stronger Scotch College that took it home this year; however, 2016 is only around the corner and if the Trinity athletes want it bad enough, they have the potential to win it back.
