This was the College’s second year playing and training on the artificial turf at Perth Hockey Stadium and an increase in competitiveness and improvement in skills was a noticeable feature of the season.

The season started with a very successful tour to Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Mrs Julia Reid, Mr Peter Norman and new 1st XI coach Mr Scott Embry accompanied 26 boys to Queensland for nine nights during the April school holidays. The boys played four fixtures against Redcliffe Hockey Club, a Gold Coast representative team, a Tweed Border Hockey Association representative side and Heretaunga College from New Zealand. Mr Scott Embry’s team, comprised mostly of 1st XI players was undefeated, winning every game with the same score of 4–1. The younger team, coached by Mr Peter Norman, was also very competitive having two wins and a draw. The boys also participated in a number of team-building activities such as bubble soccer, abseiling, high ropes, fencing and archery as well as visiting three theme parks on the Gold Coast. Congratulations to all boys on the tour for their excellent behaviour, enthusiasm and commitment to every aspect of the tour. It was a real pleasure to travel with this group.

Increased numbers of senior hockey players meant that Trinity was able to field a 1st, 2nd and 3rd XI team in 2015. This meant lower numbers in each team and enabled all players to have a lot of time on the field. It also meant players from Year 9 were needed to help fill the teams and I thank the Year 9 players and parents who assisted the senior teams this year.

The 1st XI started the season with confidence after strong performances on tour and defeated Guildford 5–0 in the first fixture of the season, led by Captain Lachlan Broun (12.6) and Vice-Captain Marcus Di Filippo (12.2). A narrow 1–0 defeat by Wesley College in the second fixture was disappointing and the team was not able to take home points again in the first round despite some very close games. The team started the second round with renewed purpose and was able to defeat Guildford Grammar School (2–0) and Wesley (3–1) as well as draw against Hale School (1–1). This took the team to ten points – the first time to reach double figures for a number of seasons. I thank our new coach, Mr Scott Embry, for the commitment he made to the team and the confidence he inspired in the boys. Congratulations to Marcus Di Filippo (12.2) on being named fairest and best for the 1st XI and Scott Reid (11.8)

Trinity hockey had a positive 2015 with improved results in a number of year groups.

for runner-up fairest and best. Harrison Pell (9.3) was named most promising player and Rohan James (11.2) took home the most improved trophy. The 1st XI players did a great job in assisting Mr Martin Tucker (’87) with coaching the Junior School players on Tuesday mornings this season. To top off a very busy season, the 1st XI was also involved in games against the Hotspurs and a touring team from Pembroke College in Adelaide.

Mr Alastair Hay’s 2nd XI, led by Captain James Heald (12.2) and Vice-Captain Joel Bendotti (12.1) had no need of the Duckworth-Lewis correction factor in the first fixture of the season with a dominating game to win 1–0 against Guildford Grammar. This was closely followed by a strong victory over Wesley in Round 3. Unfortunately, no more points were added to the table during the season; however, the team challenged the opposition in almost every game. This was the most successful season for the 2nd XI in recent history. Oscar Pecorari (11.4) was named fairest and best, Ryan Gonsalves (12.7) won the coach’s award and Stephen Younghusband (12.5) won most improved with his excellent performance as goalkeeper. One of the highlights for the 2nd XI was the victory over the 1st XI (with the Duckworth-Lewis factor) in the Eddie Urquhart Cup in the last week of Term 3.

The 3rd XI was coached by Mr Fraser Hay and showed great improvement during the season. This team was lacking in experience but had a lot of enthusiasm and had a number of close results. Jack Newman (12.7) captained the side, Rueben Tuffin (11.8) was named fairest and best, Travis Levett (11.3) won the coach’s award and John Bradford (12.4) was the most improved.

Year 10A hockey was coached by Mr Peter Norman. This team was short on numbers with Jason Gonsalves (10.1) playing 1st XI and leaving the team lacking a key player. Despite not being able to register any points on the premiership table, the team improved during the season and played with a lot of heart and determination. Samuel D’Souza (10.4) was named fairest and best, Lachlan Rogers (10.6) won the runner-up fairest and best and Sebastien Min Oo (10.5) was the most improved.

The Year 9A team was coached by Mr Fraser Hay and managed by Mrs Judy Dawson. The team had an improved season from Year 8 with two wins against Guildford Grammar and also a win against Christ Church Grammar School as well as some very narrow losses. Congratulations to Harrison Pell (9.3), Riley Hanlon (9.3), Joel Taylor (9.6) and Edward Pownall (9.5) who all also played games for the 1st XI during the season. Harrison Pell (9.3) was named fairest and best, Roman Okely (9.8) won the coach’s award and Edward Pownall (9.5) was the most improved for the 9A team.

Mr Peter Jones (’03) and Mr Michael Slack-Smith worked with the Year 8 hockey players. Mr Slack-Smith coached the combined Year 9B/8B team and awarded the fairest and best trophy to goalkeeper William Tan (9.7). Michael Miocevich (8.2) won the coach’s award and Jaxon Degebrodt (8.1) was the winner of the most improved trophy. The Year 8A team, coached by Mr Jones, had some good results with three wins and five losses for the season and show some promise for the years to come.

Louis James (8.4) was awarded the fairest and best trophy, Dejan Bouwhuis (8.1) was presented with the coach’s award and Ethan Gosatti (8.1) won the most improved for the Year 8A team.

New staff member, Mrs Jodie Green, coached an enthusiastic squad of Year 7 hockey players. Many of the boys had not played a lot of hockey before and the team did not manage to win a game; however, a lot of improvement was seen during the season with results in round two better than those in round one. Cameron Pell (7.5) was presented with the fairest and best trophy, Charles Gilbert (7.3) won the coach’s award and Jess Higgins (7.4) won the most improved trophy awarded at the hockey dinner at the end of the season.

I thank the Friends of Trinity Hockey committee who again supported hockey at Trinity with their fundraising efforts and enthusiasm for further improving the sport at the College. In particular I thank the committee members serving their final year as their sons graduate this year. Many thanks to Mr Adrian Staltari (’79) for his work and support as Treasurer for a number of years and his work in organising the movie fundraiser each year. Mr Paul Bendotti (’82) and Mrs Carolyn Bendotti have both been long term committee members and wonderful supporters of hockey at Trinity. Thank you also to Mrs Carol Di Filippo for her years of help and service to the sport at Trinity. In conclusion I thank the College, players and parents for continuing to support hockey at Trinity. I am confident that hockey is moving in a positive direction at Trinity with the move to Perth Hockey Stadium for all grades, the employment of a specialist goalkeeping coach and the appointment of high quality external coaches. I look forward to seeing continued improvement in season 2016.
