The 2015 tennis season for the 1st VIII team again ended with Trinity finishing in fifth position.

Mr Geoff Jamieson Coach 1st VIII

We had two very strong wins over Wesley College and Guildford Grammar School. Whilst the four schools who defeated us were clearly too strong, it was clear the gap between Trinity and the others has been significantly reduced. Watching the tennis this season, it was also clear that the standard of tennis throughout the PSA is currently extremely high.

I commend the efforts of Captain Corey De Zoysa (12.6) and Vice-captain Adam Gileno (12.2) for their sustained performance in leading the team by example. Setting the right standard has been particularly important this year because we have so many young players in the 1st VIII. With three Year 9 students and one Year 8 student in the team, our leaders have shown the way with their effort and enthusiasm at training, determination in competition and always demonstrating good sportsmanship. The benefit of this leadership will become more evident over the next few years as these young players develop.

This season had a number of challenges. Our courts at Trinity were torn up to make way for the new gymnasium. The replacement courts, which were due to be ready at the start of the school year, were not completed until the end of the tennis season. Our training was conducted at the State Tennis Centre, causing a rushed bus ride back to Trinity in the morning ready for classes. Also, with the building of the new football stadium, seven courts at the State Tennis Centre were removed and most other courts had times when they were not available due to resurfacing. Unfortunately, only the 1st VIII was able to use the State Tennis Centre for home matches. This certainly meant a loss of atmosphere on competition days without the presence of the 2nd VIII and the 3rd VIII teams. All should be back to normal next season.

I acknowledge the efforts of a number of people during this season. Firstly, Mrs Suzanne De Zoysa, who would regularly prepare breakfast for the boys, by herself, on training days and help with the preparation of our wonderful morning teas on game days – she is also amazing at cooking and decorating cakes. Mr Michael Hadfield took on a major role in the organisation of morning tea and I know he had great support from a number of other parents. Finally, another thank you to Mr Brendan Malarkey (‘01) for his continued support of Trinity tennis as our

professional tennis coach. Whilst Brendan runs his own successful coaching business at Fremantle Tennis Club, as an Old Boy, he still likes to maintain his contact and involvement with the College and his efforts are very important to future success.

In January 2015, 19 boys and two staff members travelled to Melbourne for the 2015 tennis tour. As in previous years, the highlight was attending the first two days of the Australian Open and watching the best tennis players in the world in action. The tour included the usual sight-seeing attractions in Melbourne, gym visits and tennis training. The boys also had the opportunity to compete in the Melbourne Open Tennis Tournament. Those boys who were 16 years of age and over had to compete in the open draw and found the competition very tough. Those under 16 years old were able to be included in the junior draw with great success. Samuel Hadfield (11.7) won the singles title. He then teamed with James King (11.5) to win the doubles title. I thank Mr Graeme Porter and Mrs Sandy Jamieson for their support and contribution to the tour which would not have been possible without their help.
