The PL Duffy Library Resource Centre
Mrs Bindy Hammond Head of Library and Research
It happened in the library… the PL Duffy Library!
The library team consists of Head of Library and Research, Mrs Bind Hammond; Teacher Librarian, Mrs Rebecca Keshwar; Library Technician, Mrs Emma McLevie and Library Assistant, Ms Jena McDowall.
As a rule, the days of blanket silence in the library are long gone. Students no longer need to perch self-consciously on the edge of the chairs and jolt with embarrassment when they drop their pencil. This year we have exhaled. The lively flow, the activity and the hum of interactions is what we try so hard to build up. Meeting everyone’s needs and expectations is a challenge. We are continuing to expand options to communicate resources to students for research and pleasure.
In the library, card games, chess, collaborative study and reading co-exist. Our library hums, somewhere between noisy and silent.
Highlights Books Light Up Our World
The senior library was lit up for the annual Book Week celebrations, celebrating Australian books, Australian authors and Australian illustrators. We celebrated this year with Western Australian, internationally acclaimed, author A. J. Betts visiting Trinity and talking to all students in Years 7 –9; creating Vibrobots and daily quizzes.
A number of Middle School students enjoyed our lunch time activity across the week which was building a simple circuit Vibrobot bug, ably assisted by Mrs McDowall, to see if they could race them.
Book Club
The Years 8 –10 Book Clubs are dedicated to fostering a student’s love of reading. Students read and share their own experiences and views of books. Students are encouraged to expand their reading horizons to new genres, offering endless adventures discovered through the rustle of the glowing pages.

Visiting Authors
We have been spoilt by authors A. J. Betts and Mark Greenwood, illustrator Kyle Hughes-Odgers and hip-hop artist Marksman Lloyd this year.
Perth’s Marksman Lloyd entertained students and staff in the library at lunch time on 27 February. ‘ML’ has crafted a style of music focusing on changing the way we look at the world we live in. His approach to song writing, willingness to push the boundaries of hip hop and infectious live show made Marksman Lloyd an act not to be missed, with the students participating in an act that had the library pounding.
Kyle Hughes-Odgers: a Western Australian artist, author and illustrator visited (http://kylehughesodgers.com) on 4 May. He ran sessions across the day sharing a presentation of his current work, picture books and videos of large scale projects he has completed both here in Perth and overseas. Kyle is a firm believer in using a light touch by creating works that reference the colours and shapes in the existing environment and encouraged the boys to look at the slat ceiling, shapes of furniture and carpet inserts in the library to literally draw inspiration.
Mark Greenwood shared his passion for history with classes from Years 4 –7. Year 7s were motivated to think about their writing experiences and to have the courage to write with authenticity, creativity and flair. Years 4 –6 were inspired by Mark’s books about Australian history. He entertained the students with the story behind his stories Jandamarra, The Legend of Lasseter’s Reef, Simpson and his Donkey and Ned Kelly and the Green Sash.
A. J. Betts, a local Perth author, asked students in Years 7 –9 to be aware of their environment – to take note of their surroundings and turn that into a story – for example, a drip in the Graham Farmer Freeway tunnel. A J’s books, Zac and Mia, Shutterspeed and Wavelength have flown off the shelves. 225

Activities
A chess competition was run in the library to select the best participants for the PSA Chess Competition. The members of this team were: Sri Krishna Dharmapuri (7.4), Daniel Smith (9.3), Farruh Mavlonov (11.7), James Della Gatta (8.7), and reserve Michael Hayes (12.1).
The team came equal third in the competition held at Wesley College. A big thank you to Mr Harvey for driving the bus to the event.
The Chickens have Hatched!
Over two weeks in Term 1, the library became parents to 13 baby chicks. Staff and students were able to monitor and interact with the development of chicks from an egg. Every morning, lunchtime and after school the chicks were surrounded by boys watching and cuddling them. There have been favourites, names bestowed and requests to take chickens home.
Maths Week and Science Week were showcased with interactive displays by each department. Demonstrations by Mr Ian Hailes (Maths) and Mr Anthony D’Ignazyo (Science) entertained the students. The library was abuzz with students counting jellybeans, entering answers for year group questions and experimenting with the pick up and put down items in Week 2 for Maths Week. Well done, Mr Hailes for the OJ and H2O head-scratching fraction and organising the touch table. The Science touch table theme of ‘light’ allowed students to explore their science outside the classroom.
