A Mediterranean take on longevity
We visit Europe’s newest health and longevity retreat, where a next-level wellness philosophy is rooted in southern European lifestyle principles
REPORT BY WENDY GOLLEDGE

Blending medical wellness and spa therapies with fitness, nutrition, longevity and mindfulness, ZEM Wellness Clinic opened in Altea, Spain in January 2025. The latest facility to target the burgeoning longevity trend, its Mediterranean philosophy is underpinned by an individualised approach.
Sitting at the base of the Sierra de Bernia, with views of the Mediterranean Sea, Altea is an area renowned for fostering and nurturing health, with a long history of healing. Named Althaia by the ancient Greeks – meaning ‘I cure’ – it’s the ideal location for a clinic dedicated to longevity and restoration.
ZEM Wellness Clinic is run by local family business Sandos Hotels, which operates other resorts in Spain and Mexico. Purchased seven years ago, the space has been meticulously redesigned to accommodate a 95-suite hotel, 4,000sqm spa and 1,600sqm clinic. CEO Franck De Weerdt was hired six years ago from
the SHA Wellness flagship in nearby Alicante, where he was corporate hotel director, to oversee the design and rebuild of the 40,000sqm site and hire a wellness-centric expert team.
“At our heart, ZEM is about humans taking care of humans,” he says. “We wanted to create something for the future. Our Mediterranean longevity philosophy helps people live longer and better, combining the medical efficacy of a leading clinic with a state-of-the-art wellness and luxury hotel.”
Growing older as a state of mind
Not just a product of ZEM Wellness’s location, the spa’s Mediterranean longevity concept is rooted in the region’s unique attitude to growing older. “It’s a feeling – an approach to the passing of the time that’s exclusive to the Mediterranean,” says de Weerdt. “Everybody’s getting older; time cannot be halted. Mediterranean longevity isn’t promoting
anti-ageing; it’s sharing pro-aging. We aim to inspire people to accept the passage of time and embrace healthy nutrition, natural connection, wellness and mindfulness to live a more fulfilling, stress-free life for an extended period.”
Where mindfulness meets medicine
No detail has been overlooked in the creation of ZEM Wellness Clinic, from the surfaces covered with Mediterranean marble from Novelda in Alicante to the 35,000-piece hand-laid mosaic in reception. The light-flooded design has Arabesque touches and strong Mediterranean influences, including a 1,300-year-old olive tree in the grounds.
The clinical area offers a comprehensive biohacking and longevity menu. Operated by a highly qualified team from 25 specialities, including medical doctors, therapists, psychologists, gynaecologists and nutritionists, it’s spearheaded by medical director David de Cubas Garcia, who was formerly clinical director at SHA Wellness in Alicante.

“In our team of 120 we can speak 27 languages and we offer 23 diagnostic tests, 32 medical specialties, 16 therapeutic treatments and 14 wellness therapies. To maintain this, we invest heavily in training and retaining staff.”
Franck De Weerdt CEO, ZEM Wellness Clinic
Six integrated health programmes cover two fundamental areas of wellness: Longevity, creating the conditions for a longer, fuller life; and Balance and Vitality, for weight control, body cleansing and stress management. Programmes last from three to 21 nights and can be combined with complementary additions – called Boosts – that focus on specific areas including dermo-aesthetics, brain health, intimacy and sleep.
ZEM creates an entirely personalised treatment plan for every guest, using combined diagnostic

results from three facial and body scanners. There has been a vast investment into technology across a mind-boggling 32 different practices. These include CTU Mega 20 Diamagnetic therapy, a non-invasive, painless technology for acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions; and the Ultraformer MPT, which uses micropulse technology for non-invasive face lifting and skin tightening. The clinic even boasts its own operating theatre.
“There are many pioneering places like this in the world. What sets ZEM apart is our Mediterranean way of being,” says de Cubas Garcia. “The ZEM philosophy promotes a holistic approach, combining clinical science with ancestral therapies, physical activation and contact with nature to restore and maintain harmony. Even with all the technological advances we’ve invested in, we equally employ holistic treatments that are thousands of years old to improve health.”
A 360-degree experience
The healing power of nutrition is one of ZEM’s key pillars. Each of its four plans – Detox, Rejuvenation, Raw 80/20 and Essential – is based on the

Bringing mindfulness into the treatment room
We ask wellness manager Liliana Paraipan, a specialist who honed her skills working in wellness centres across Romania, about the role of mindfulness at ZEM Wellness Clinic
Why is mindfulness such an important part of your offer?
Coming to ZEM is a moment of reset, reconnection and empowerment.
Yes, you can have a great stay and see measurable transformation, but that’s not going to last forever. So we try to instil small, mindful habits the guests can take home and introduce into a daily routine. Reconnecting mindfully with the simple things we forget in normal life is a huge part of longevity.
How are you combining tech with mindful touch in treatments?
We have the very latest technology, but many others also have this, so we place extra importance on human

connection. The tech we have is not here to replace touch, it’s here to combine with our therapists’ hands to create a more profound experience for guests.
How do you help people reconnect with the present moment?
An element of mindfulness is included in all programmes, as well as our free educational workshops where we explain the science behind, for example, mindful breathing.
It’s my personal project to bring mindful presence into all our therapies, to help the guest leave us more intentional and more aware of what’s happening inside their body than when they arrived.

Mediterranean diet and made from organically grown food sourced from its own 75,000sqm farm, Finca Althaya. There are daily culinary classes to help guests learn skills for healthier eating and every visitor is sent home with a personalised nutritional plan to follow.
“Our nutritional offering is critical to our personalisation – food is just as important as our wellness technologies and medicine,” says wellness manager Liliana Paraipan.
Central to every stay is the ZEM health check, an integrative consultation used to tailor each guest’s programme. “Our traditional-style medical examinations are meticulously thorough, reviving the essence of classical medicine,” says Paraipan. “So often in the modern world, people feel rushed by medical professionals. Our doctors take real time to listen, observe and deeply understand. The outcome of this consultation informs every programme.”
The ZEMness Spa
The property’s vast spa has an area dedicated to thermals and water, as well as a wellness zone. Experiences in the former include a snow room, Himalayan salt room, three saunas (infrared, bio and Finnish), a Watsu pool and a hammam and rassoul treatment area. Wellness continues outside with three pools and the Patio de los Naranjos, a space reminiscent of the Alhambra Palace in Granada.

In 42 treatment rooms, therapists combine traditional techniques with advanced touchless and recovery technologies. As well as cryotherapy, pressotherapy and oxygen therapy in a hyperbaric chamber, ZEM Wellness Clinic is the first Metawell Hub in Europe, offering the brand’s reLounge ZeroG, Zestós DryFloat, Welnamis, RLX Satori, Libra Edge, MLX Quartz and MLX iDome.
The team talks of bioharmonisation rather than biohacking. “Our focus is to always combine human touch with the tech, to leverage what nature has taught us,” says Paraipan.
Humans taking care of humans
For de Weerdt, one of the project’s key challenges was centred around staffing. “We’re based in a small Mediterranean village seeking to offer world-class wellness services to an international clientele. Finding the right people to offer that service has been intense, but we now have world-class experts in every discipline,” he says.
“In our team of 120 we can speak 27 languages and we offer 23 diagnostic tests, 32 medical specialties, 16 therapeutic treatments and 14 wellness therapies. To maintain this, we invest

heavily in training and retaining staff.
“Retention is, of course, about salary, but just as importantly about the feeling of togetherness we create. If someone wishes to move on, I’m always looking for a solution – a department change, a new focus. I’d rather move a team member than lose them. Staffing is like a puzzle. Every single person has their perfect place, even if it’s not where they’re initially located within the business.”
De Cubas Garcia adds: “Our work here is vocational; we offer longevity with integrity to help people make big changes. Human beings are living in the best era of mankind. We’ve improved nutrition and medicine; without realising it, we’re all already improving our longevity. So we’re living longer but not necessarily better.
“At ZEM, our programmes are like a seed that grows inside people and, over time, changes their habits. Longevity, in the end, is living as long as you can be happy. Not by living longer but living in better health and happiness.”

Rediscovering the essence of summer
ESPA’s new campaign helps spas to create a revenue-boosting seasonal sanctuary for guests
Iconic brand ESPA has launched a seasonal campaign to help spas guide guests to summer wellness in 2025. Your Summer Sanctuary harnesses the power of the brand’s Active Nutrients, a blend of vitamin rich superfoods and antioxidants to restore hydration, energise tired skin and leave a visibly healthy glow.
“Summer spa visits all too often focus on holiday body prep rather than finding moments of joy and connection and pause,” explains Gemma Bosanko, head of brand, ESPA international. “We want to help our spa partners guide guests towards more balanced summer wellbeing.
Your Summer Sanctuary is said to be perfect for guests experiencing seasonal dryness, post-sun dullness or seeking a natural radiance boost.
“We’re encouraging spas to create new treatment packages focused on finding a sense of connection, serenity and confidence with ESPA’s summer skin essentials,” Bosanko explains.
“We have created a special summer treatment menu featuring the Active Nutrients Glow From Within Facial, which immerses guests in the true essence of sanctuary, and our Salt and Oil scrub

Limited Edition Jet Lag Treatment
As part of Your Summer Sanctuary, ESPA has devised a new, 60-minute limited edition Jet Lag treatment. “Travelling across multiple time zones disrupts the body’s circadian rhythms, which can deregulate sleep and lead to symptoms including insomnia, daytime drowsiness, extreme tiredness and trouble concentrating,” says Gemma Bosanko. “Air travel can also lead to dehydration, circulation becoming stagnant and muscle aches from cramped conditions.
“The new ESPA Jet Lag treatment, combined with guests’ chosen Signature Blend, will leave everyone it touches feeling either ready to explore their destination or settle in for a good sleep.”
Tailored to soothe the scalp, shoulders and legs, the Jet Lag treatment combines exfoliation, massage and aromatherapeutic benefits to comfort tired muscles, enhance circulation and provide targeted tension relief where it’s needed the most after long or short-haul flights.

Sanctuary campaign was shot in Nizuc Resort & Spa, Cancun.
“ESPA works with every partner spa to drive seasonal footfall,” says Bosanko. “By encouraging a focus on optimised skin health for the summer months, we’re guiding guests on a journey of rejuvenation towards a feel-good glow, whether that’s with skin-transforming spa treatments and rituals focused on regenerative wellbeing or expert skincare to take home.”
A world leading spa and skincare brand, ESPA is globally renowned for creating luxurious UK-manufactured spa products and one-of-a-kind luxury spas. Founded in 1992, its global team of skilled professionals has delivered more than 550 spas in 55 countries. Mind the gap
European Spa talks to Frank Pitsikalis, senior vice-president, product strategy at Agilysys, about minimum gap restriction, generative AI and spa profitability
INTERVIEW
BY SARAH CAMILLERI

AFRANK PITSIKALIS
EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR
Frank Pitsikalis serves as senior vice-president, product strategy at Agilysys. His deep experience in hospitality, enterprise software and management consulting puts him in a sweet spot to deliver future products dedicated to making spas more efficient and profitable. The founder of Resort Suite, now part of Agilysys, he also serves as chairman of the International Spa Association Board of Directors and supports the Global Wellness Institute. www.agilysys.com
globally recognised advocate of the spa industry, Frank Pitsikalis leads product strategy at Agilysys and a strong team of software developers dedicated to building tech to drive spa success. Passionate about people, progress and wellbeing for all, Pitsikalis and the team at Agilysys are dedicated to helping spas worldwide optimise their financial performance.
They focus on two important questions: why, when the common practice of dynamic pricing is used successfully in hospitality and aviation sectors, is it being deployed in only one per cent of spas? Furthermore, if spas need to demonstrate the best financial performance to grow as a key hospitality driver, why are they missing this opportunity to optimise performance and profitability?
For many, it may be the case that they do not have the software to do the heavy lifting. For others it’s the fear of push-back from price-sensitive guests or a lack of confidence when it comes to changing to a new way of selling spa time. However, if deployed in the right way, dynamic management of treatment room space utilisation – performed with confidence by a well-trained team – could lead to a significant uplift in profits.
European Spa talks to Pitsikalis about why he believes spas need to think beyond dynamic pricing techniques to introduce ‘minimal gap restriction’. Think of Tetris when it comes to managing your treatment columns and you are halfway there…
Frank, how do you think spas can better manage their revenue?
We shouldn’t leave money on the table. We should think about how we can maximise profitability across spa operations. Dynamic pricing is where you’re changing the price of the treatment based on demand, just like a hotel room. If you were just to change the mix of services that are available based on demand, you’ll yield a much higher profit.
“AI is advancing every six months. It’s coming to our industry, and it’s about how we, as leaders, look to incorporate it into our operations.”
Frank Pitsikalis Agilysys
For example, without any kind of AI, without any revenue management tools, if you just make one change – stop allowing your lowest margin treatments to be booked during peak times – you will increase revenue in that time period. We tested this and $275 (£203/€241) of profit on one treatment can be converted to $500.
That’s a significant uplift in revenue, tell us more.
If you take that across, let’s say a spa that has ten treatment rooms, it’s massive. This is also not revenue. This is profit. Incredibly, 99 per cent of spas do not do this. It’s much

more, ‘Here’s my spa menu. Call in for an appointment, it’s available for you’, leaving spas wide open to lost treatment hours.
We can do better than that as an industry. There is a huge opportunity for spas to improve their financial health and potential for increased profitability through dynamic pricing, service mix optimisation and AI-assisted decision making.
How does dynamic pricing differ from variable pricing?
Dynamic pricing has limitations but has some push back from
n Dynamic availability Adjusting the mix of services offered based on demand. During high-demand periods, spas should prioritise higher-margin treatments and limit availability of lower margin services. This can significantly increase profits without changing prices.

n Minimum gap restriction This technology optimises scheduling by preventing small, unsellable gaps between appointments. It works like a game of Tetris, ensuring that bookings fit together efficiently to maximise treatment room utilisation.
n Scheduling Using artificial intelligence to make better decisions about appointment scheduling, optimising the spa’s schedule to increase revenue and efficiency.
n Variable pricing A simpler alternative to dynamic pricing, where different prices are set for different days (eg. weekdays vs weekends).
BOOKING ADVICE: a guide to the terminology
Agilysys Spa’s clear calendar view helps spa operators efficiently manage spa appointments
spa operators. Variable pricing is much more commonplace in the spa world and is the strategy of adjusting treatment pricing based on predetermined factors, typically the day of the week. For example, a spa might charge one price for treatments from Monday to Thursday, and a higher price on Friday to Sunday. Unlike dynamic pricing, which changes prices based on real-time demand, variable pricing follows a set pattern. It’s a simpler approach that many spas find more comfortable to implement.
What is minimum gap restriction?
Minimum gap restriction is sort of like playing Tetris when the guests are booking. For example, if I have a two-hour spot available in peak hours, and somebody calls for a 90-minute service. If I’ve set my minimum gap to 60 minutes, it’s going to turn away that service – it’s not going to take the

Frank Pitsikalis Agilysys
90-minute period, because it leaves a 30-minute gap, which typically we can’t sell.”
So minimum gap restriction solves the challenge of lost treatment time?
Exactly. When you look at your schedule for one day its harder to see the gaps. To get a true picture,

you need to go back and review a week. Just look at your schedule and days that you were sold out. You will remember taking calls and turning away business because you were sold out. But if you look on your schedule and see 15-minute, 30-minute, 45-minute gaps everywhere, you realise that’s lost revenue.
What role can AI play in optimising treatment schedules?
AI is advancing every six months. In fact it is almost doubling in what it can do in this time, and how well it does those things. So it’s coming to our industry, and it’s about how we, as leaders, look to incorporate it into our operations.
At Agilysys, we are working on AI-driven conversational reservations that can handle high volumes efficiently. We’ve been able to open this up to our API so that somebody could book a dinner reservation, a spa treatment, a yoga class, a golf tee time or a room reservation. You will always have guests who prefer to talk to people, but many need information fast and would prefer not to wait.

Hacking the longevity code
In an exclusive interview, CEO Simone Gibertoni outlines Clinique La Prairie’s Longevity Master Assessment and new Epinome nutraceutical
INTERVIEW
BY SARAH CAMILLERI
Clinique La Prairie, the iconic leading Swiss longevity institution, has marked a major milestone in the evolution of preventive health and wellness with its recent London launch of two transformative offerings.
Epinome, a new precision supplement targeting epigenetic health, was launched with the brand’s exciting Longevity Master Assessment, a ground-breaking diagnostic service that could represent a turning point for personalised wellness in spas and medical retreats.
These international launches mark the brand’s ambition to lead a global shift toward science-led longevity. Clinique La Prairie is combining AI-powered diagnostics, nutraceuticals and health diagnostics with the latest findings in the field of epigenetics to enhance its bespoke longevity programmes.
Speaking exclusively to European Spa, Simone Gibertoni, CEO of Clinique La Prairie, shares the brand’s vision for precision preventive care.
“With our new Longevity Master Assessment, we’re enabling clients to take proactive action long before symptoms appear,” he says. “This is about intervening at the right time, in the right way, using evidence-based insights to reduce key health risks like cardiovascular disease. It’s a model of care that’s grounded in prevention, not treatment.”
Designed to slow cellular ageing

Developed over three years in collaboration with Genknowme, a Swiss life sciences company specialising in epigenetics, Epinome is Clinique La Prairie’s first supplement developed specifically to regulate DNA methylation and gene expression. These are mechanisms central to how the body ages and repairs itself at the cellular level.
The formulation features a blend of seven plant-based bioactive compounds including sulforaphane, betulinic acid and CoQ10, all chosen for their ability to reduce oxidative stress and inflammation while enhancing cellular resilience. These are combined with the brand’s 5-active Holistic Complex. The result is a potent daily sachet formula designed to slow cellular ageing and promote epigenetic balance and long-term vitality.
Olga Donica, longevity

innovation director at Clinique La Prairie, says Epinome is more than a luxury supplement. “This reflects years of scientific research and a deep understanding of how nutrients can influence gene expression in measurable, meaningful ways,” she says. “It is a step forward in preventive health that aligns perfectly with the growing demand for longevity solutions rooted in science.”
Longevity Master Assessment
Now integrated into the signature weekly programmes, Clinique La Prairie’s new Longevity Master Assessment is predicted to be a gamechanger in diagnostic health optimisation. Claiming to offer the most comprehensive analysis of biological health currently available in a longevity clinic
“Without real data, it’s difficult to create lasting impact. The Longevity Master Assessment brings precision diagnostics to the heart of transformation.”

environment, the protocol brings together more than 300 biomarkers across eight modules.
These encompass genetic profiling, glycan and microbiome analysis, neuromuscular assessment, nutritional evaluation, mental wellbeing checks, biochemical testing and advanced inflammatory markers. Each of these diagnostic categories helps to provide a full-spectrum view of the client’s biological age, health vulnerabilities and long-term wellness potential.
Gibertoni believes this approach is the future of preventative healthcare. “Until now, most destinations have focused on generic lifestyle advice such as relaxation, exercise and nutrition. These are important, but without real data, it’s difficult to create lasting impact. The Longevity Master Assessment brings precision diagnostics to the heart of transformation, allowing Clinique La Prairie to offer bespoke care with real medical depth.”

testing, has played a pivotal role in bringing biomedical expertise to complement the Longevity Master Assessment. “Epigenetics gives us the ability to measure how your current lifestyle is impacting your future health. That means we can now make adjustments that are preventative, evidence-based and empowering. It marks a new era in wellness, where science doesn’t just diagnose, it guides transformation.”
“Our collaboration with Clinique La Prairie reflects a shared vision for the future of preventive health, one where precision and personalisation come together,” she adds. “With the right insights, we can now act on biological changes long before disease symptoms emerge. That is the true essence of proactive, preventive wellness.”

Targeting preventative healthcare for women
One exciting development at Clinique La Prairie is a determined focus on women’s health, an area that has traditionally been underserved in both wellness and clinical medicine.
The brand is now investing and developing gender-specific longevity protocols that consider hormonal fluctuations, metabolic variability and immune response unique to women across different life stages.
“We’re seeing a shift where women’s health is no longer an afterthought. It’s central to the future of personalised care,” says Gibertoni, who cautions that while trends like cryotherapy have gained popularity, they should not be applied uniformly.
Epigenetics: a new frontier in longevity programming
Dr Gonseth Nusslé explains that while genetics are fixed, epigenetics is dynamic and responsive. Epigenetics is the study of how lifestyle, nutrition, stress, sleep and environmental factors affect gene expression. At the heart of this process lies DNA methylation, a reversible biochemical mechanism that determines whether certain genes are switched on or off.
When methylation patterns become unbalanced due to stress, poor nutrition, chronic inflammation or exposure to toxins, this can accelerate cellular ageing and increase susceptibility to chronic illness.
“DNA methylation is like a dimmer switch on your genetic code,” she says. “It governs how your genes behave without altering the genetic sequence itself. This has far-reaching implications for inflammation, tissue repair, immune function, ageing and disease risk.
“The epigenetic tests we collaborate on at Clinique La Prairie are designed to track, interpret and improve biological ageing through targeted interventions that support healthy methylation and gene regulation. The new Epinome supplement is based on this science.”
“DNA methylation is like a dimmer switch on your genetic code.”

on diagnostics and personal data. The future of wellness is about listening to your body, not following fads. It’s about testing, interpreting and customising care for each individual,” he explains.
The power of daily habits
Underlying all of this is the principle that daily routines and habits play a far greater role in health than most realise. “Habits are the engine of longevity, more than genetics or even environment,” Gibertoni notes. “But our brains are wired for short-term reward. This is where structure, coaching and scientifically designed support systems help bridge the gap between good intentions and real transformation.”

Epinome is now available in a 30-day box for £390 (€458), sold through Clinique La Prairie’s online platform and a selection of retailers including Harrods, Mandarin Oriental and John Bell & Croyden, UK.
The brand’s vision of luxury, technology and biology converging is one to watch. “This isn’t about treating illness,” says Gibertoni. “It’s about unlocking health. That starts with data, trust and targeted action.”

European Spa returns to Anantara Layan Phuket Resort to find out about the brand’s investment in the Layan Life by Anantara concept
REPORT BY SARAH CAMILLERI
estled on the western coast of Phuket in Thailand, Layan Life by Anantara embodies a forward-thinking approach to holistic wellness. Tucked away in a lush hillside location, the new wellness centre is part of Anantara Layan Phuket Resort. This flagship property for the brand, operated by Minor Hotels, offers 30 suites, 46 pool villas and 15 luxurious private residences, all set against the serene backdrop of Layan beach and the Andaman Sea.
I came to the resort two years ago and it feels like no time has passed. I loved the place the first time and I am looking forward to experiencing its new addition, the Layan Life by Anantara – a brand new wellbeing hub designed to showcase the brand’s longevity services and wellness programming.
On my first visit, Bill Heinecke, founder of Minor Hotels, shared his view on the value of wellness: “We believe that wellness is the future of hospitality,”

“Creating a destination that blends traditional healing with modern science allows
us to offer guests something truly unique – a place where they can proactively care for their health.”
William ‘Bill’ Heinecke Founder and chairman, Minor International
he told European Spa. “Our investment in Layan Life is a testament to our commitment to delivering world-class health and wellbeing experiences.
“Creating a destination that blends traditional healing with modern science allows us to offer guests something truly unique – a place where they can proactively care for their health. Our vision is to continue expanding our wellness portfolio globally, focusing on innovation and sustainability to meet the needs of discerning travellers.”
Free from restriction
Two years on, his words ring true with the opening of Anantara’s newly built Layan Life by Anantara centre. Created to deliver dedicated wellness programming, the 1,767sqm pavilion is a remarkable architectural build. Elegantly crafted from glass and local timber, the structure appears to float above a serene lily pool. Designed by Martin Palleros of Tierra Design, its harmonious form blends effortlessly into the surrounding gardens, with expansive glass walls reflecting the stillness of its setting.
“Layan Life was born from the idea that wellness shouldn’t feel restrictive,” says Frederic Varnier, vice-president of operations, Minor Hotels. “We wanted to create something that takes a whole-of-life approach – one that’s inclusive, adaptable and meets guests where they are in their journey. Whether they’re traveling solo or with loved ones, guests can shape their own path toward better health.”
He continues: “What makes Layan Life stand out is the way we personalise both medical and holistic

treatments based on real outcomes and individual needs. We also place a strong focus on Traditional Thai Medicine, blending those ancient practices with modern medical wellness, physiotherapy, hydrotherapy and longevity medicine for a well-rounded experience.”
Getting under the bonnet of Anantara’s investment in Layan Life by Anantara, Varnier says it reflects the brand’s commitment to wellness development.
“The Layan Life centre was a significant investment project that took approximately 15 months to complete. The total investment cost was close to 500 million Baht (£11.3m/€13.3m),” he confirms. The project involved meticulous planning and design, ensuring that the facility would meet the highest standards of wellness and health services.”
Movement and performance
The ground floor of Layan Life by Anantara is dedicated to movement and hydrotherapy, bathed in natural light and framed by lush garden views. At its heart is a 200sqm gym, fully equipped with

the latest Technogym systems for cardio, strength and functional training. One-to-one sessions for postural issues and stretching are on offer, curated by physiotherapists and fitness experts.
Next door, a spacious yoga pavilion provides a peaceful space for group and individual sessions. A dedicated Pilates studio offers focused training with a full suite of reformer machines. The hydrotherapy and vitality suite includes Himalayan salt saunas, steam rooms and multisensory experience showers. Completing the floor are well-appointed changing rooms and lounge areas for rest and reset.

ANANTARA: ONE TO WATCH IN WELLNESS
Anantara’s global spa portfolio currently comprises over 50 spas worldwide. The creation of Layan Life by Anantara represents a significant investment in advancing the group’s offerings. The brand continues to expand its wellness footprint with pipeline projects including new spas and wellness centres in key global markets such as the Middle East, Europe and Asia Pacific.
In Europe, Anantara currently operates eight properties: Palais Hansen Vienna, Austria; Villa Padierna Palace Marbella, Spain; Palazzo Naiadi Rome and Convento di Amalfi, Italy; New York Palace Budapest, Hungary; The Marker Dublin, Ireland; Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky Amsterdam, Netherlands; and Plaza Nice, France.
Modalities and expertise
Wellness manager Sasithorn Charmorchad leads a team of 15 that includes experts in Thai Traditional Medicine, physiotherapists, medical practitioners, wellness consultants and fitness professionals.
“We’re still very much growing and it’s an exciting time for us all,” she says – and her experience and passion for all things spa and wellness is evident.
“Before coming to Layan Life by Anantara I spent three years here as a wellness consultant and Thai traditional medicine doctor. My responsibilities back then included guest consultations, treatments and mentoring a small team of practitioners. It was a
great start to understand the future direction we needed to take,” she adds.
Prior to joining Anantara, Charmorchad worked in key training and practitioner roles for Kamalaya Wellness Sanctuary and Chiva-Som Hua Hin in Thailand, and Zulal Wellness by Chiva-Som in Qatar – all worldclass and iconic wellness destinations.
Layan Life by Anantara is a barometer for future development. “We see a mix of guests coming to us,” says Charmorchad. “About 50 per cent are hotel guests and residents who discover our wellness offerings while staying here. The other half are external guests, many of whom come with specific goals after finding us online or on social media.
“Common issues include digestive concerns, sleep problems, stress, and general rejuvenation. Some guests simply want a quiet wellness escape.”
Advanced diagnostics and holistic wisdom
The upper floor of Layan Life by Anantara sets a fresh benchmark in integrative wellness. Purpose built for advanced diagnostics and results-driven therapies, the space is calm, light-filled and clinically precise. Guests begin with personalised health assessments using 3D body scanning, epigenetic testing and physiotherapy-led diagnostics to create tailored longevity plans.

Traditional Thai Medicine is thoughtfully integrated, offering vitality consultations, herbal therapies and energy-balancing treatments. Rooms also accommodate IV therapy, cryotherapy, hyperbaric oxygen and colonic hydrotherapy.
A unique Thai herbal dispensary anchors the experience in tradition, blending ancient wisdom with cutting-edge care. Here guests can participate in a special tea blending workshop to learn about the therapeutic benefits of hundreds of Thai herbs.
The role of nutrition is also a key part of each guest consultation. “We offer tailored nutritional advice for those looking to lose or gain weight or improve overall fitness. The nutritionist can also collaborate with our wellness chef to create meals that are both nutrient-dense and delicious – it’s not just about low-calorie meals but balanced, functional food,” says Charmorchad.
Tracking demand to craft programming
Since the centre opened, Charmorchad has seen new patterns of demand emerging. “Despite being new, we’ve already noticed clear patterns in guest needs,” she reports. “Pain management ranks highest,
followed by physical therapy and cryotherapy. Many guests, especially men, use cryotherapy for recovery and physical performance enhancement.”
The take-up for male-focused wellbeing programming is notable. “Men, particularly those over 40, often seek treatments for muscle pain, mobility issues, urinary health and stress. We’re seeing increasing interest from men in preventative health – not just solutions for existing problems,” says Charmorchad. “This marks a shift from what I observed in previous roles, where women were more prevention-oriented. Now, men are becoming increasingly open to discussing wellness needs, although it can take multiple consultations to build that trust.”
Urinary tract and prostate health are key areas of focus and Layan Life by Anantara has holistic programming to help.“We begin with a thorough consultation, followed by personalised herbal remedies such as teas and supplements,” explains

Wellness reimagined: the vision for Layan Life by Anantara
Frederic Varnier, vice president of operations, Minor Hotels, talks exclusively about the evolution of luxury wellness at Anantara properties
Anantara is a brand I’m really proud to be part of. It’s known for delivering exceptional service and unforgettable experiences that keep guests coming back.
What makes it unique is how deeply rooted it is in Thai culture, and that authenticity resonates with travellers. We’ve aligned our brand with shifting global expectations, focusing on markets where luxury and wellness are growing fast. It’s strategic, but also very personal for us.
We’ve definitely seen The White Lotus spark renewed interest in Thailand, just as it did with destinations in previous seasons.
Set-jetting isn’t new, but interest in Thailand has spiked again. We’re seeing younger guests, and more of them, looking for meaningful, personalised experiences – particularly around wellness.
To me, wellness is about feeling truly connected – to yourself, your surroundings and your purpose.
It’s not just about physical health; it’s emotional, mental and even spiritual. In hospitality, we’re seeing wellness move from being an optional add-on to becoming a central part of the guest experience. Wellness today means helping guests connect to themselves, their surroundings, and their purpose. At Anantara, we see it as integral to the guest journey, not just a service, but a philosophy.
What sets Layan Life by Anantara apart is its whole-of-life approach. The concept is inclusive and adaptable.
Our guests are encouraged to shape their own wellness path – from Traditional Thai Medicine to diagnostics and longevity therapy. The Layan Life by Anantara offering is for everyone, be they seasoned wellness travellers or curious first-timers. Whether solo, as a couple or family, the experience is entirely customisable.

“Wellness is no longer an optional extra – it’s central to how guests want to travel and feel.”
Frederic Varnier Vice-president of operations, Minor Hotels
The Layan Life by Anantara centre perfectly complements our original spa.
At our resort, we take a seamless, guest-centric approach to integrating our offerings. Layan Life by Anantara and our original spa are not positioned in competition, but rather as complementary elements of a broader wellness journey. The spa focuses on indulgent relaxation; Layan Life by Anantara adds depth through diagnostics and results-led programming. It’s a more holistic offering overall. This is just the beginning. From partnerships to targeted retreats, we’re exploring new ground. This is a space for transformation – and a model that could shape Anantara wellness globally.
from right: Layan Life by Anantara represents the brand’s commitment to evolving its wellness offer; a guest enjoys a traditional massage; cryotherapy is among the modalities on offer; 3D body scanning allows bespoke treatment planning
Charmorchad. “We offer a Root Vitality massage – a lower body-focused acupressure therapy and reflexology. These treatments support bladder function and lower back health, which are often interconnected issues in older male guests.”
New retreats and guest education
Charmorchad says her team are developing two new retreats: a detox programme and a sleep retreat, both in response to rising guest demand. “We are upgrading technology,” she adds. “Our hyperbaric chamber, for instance, will soon be replaced by a walk-in version for greater comfort. We’re also introducing bungee-supported fitness classes, which are safe and fun for guests with joint issues. And we’re about to launch blood ozone therapy.”
Charmorchad says that guest awareness remains a challenge. “Many people still do not fully understand the difference between spa services and wellness services,” she explains. “One of my goals is to improve how we communicate our offerings with new tours, consultations and materials. Education is key.”
In safe hands
Charmorchad’s leadership and her team’s commitment to deliver the best to guests really brings the whole Layan Life by Anantara offer to life. Anantara’s strong operational history and market position suggest optimistic ROI targets aligned with the luxury wellness segment’s robust global growth. Launch timings for the brand’s new spa projects are planned carefully, focusing on select regions with high potential demand for integrative wellness.
Undoubtedly, Minor Hotels is actively investing in expanding its wellness offerings across multiple regions. Upcoming projects emphasise preventative health, longevity programmes and integrative therapies designed to meet evolving consumer demands. These investments underscore a strategic focus on personalised wellness experiences aimed at delivering measurable health outcomes alongside luxury. Anantara Layan Life Centre is a place where precision meets soul – a fascinating step forward in the brand’s wellness evolution.

As Aromatherapy Associates celebrates 40 years of success, we ask managing director Greg Davis about the brand’s past, present and what the future holds
For 40 years, Aromatherapy Associates has been dedicated to delivering transformative wellbeing through the power of essential oils. Founded by visionary therapists Geraldine Howard and Sue Beechey in 1985, the brand has pioneered a holistic approach to self-care for mind, body and skin with one enduring mission – to promote the power of aromatherapy.
To mark its ruby anniversary, managing director Greg Davis discusses the brand’s luxurious products and world-class treatments.
How did Aromatherapy Associates begin its journey?
Rooted in professional expertise, our story began in the treatment room. Aromatherapy Associates was created by two outstanding therapists – for therapists. Our founders developed

“We have played a leading role in shaping the global conversation around aromatherapy, self-care and holistic wellbeing.”
Greg Davis Aromatherapy Associates

Where it all began…
Aromatherapy Associates was founded in London in 1985 by therapists Geraldine Howard and Sue Beechey, who were driven by a shared belief in the transformative power of essential oils. Trained by leading aromatherapists, they set out to share the benefits of therapeutic aromatherapy and create products and treatments that supported true wellbeing.

A much loved and respected pioneer of the spa industry, Geraldine once said: “I really do want the world to understand the benefits of therapeutic aromatherapy.”
Geraldine and Sue’s formulations redefined how people engage with aromatherapy, elevating it from niche to essential and laying the foundation for a holistic approach to self-care that continues to guide and shape the brand. Each of Aromatherapy Associates’ essential oil blends is still hand-crafted in London by a Master Blender, who was personally trained by the founders. Deep Relax, for example, was born from Geraldine’s quest for restful sleep and her desire to craft a pure blend that offered something far more powerful than the customary sprinkling of lavender oil.
aromatherapy blends and products to be used in results-driven spa treatments, and our formulations were originally made specifically for use in spa rituals. That heritage lives on in every product we craft today, which means we continue to be trusted by leading therapists around the world. The power of aromatherapy will always remain at the heart of our transformative spa experiences.
How is the brand carrying on the legacy of its founders?
Aromatherapy Associates remains grounded in the values that originally shaped us. Proudly B Corp certified, all our products are 100 per cent vegan, cruelty free and Leaping Bunny approved. We have been named the World’s Best Aromatherapy Brand at the World Spa Awards for seven years. Through our commitment to therapeutic efficacy and sensorial excellence, we have played a leading role in shaping the global conversation around aromatherapy, self-care and holistic wellbeing.

Priced at £75 (€89), it contains a product selection worth £197 and includes De-Stress Mind Bath & Shower Oil, De-Stress Muscle Gel, Revive Body Oil and Deep Relax Sleep Mist. The road to recovery
Oliver Patrick, clinical director at Pillar Wellbeing, emphasises the importance of incorporating authentic guest recovery programmes into your spa

ROLIVER PATRICK EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR

He speaks widely on the application of contemporary wellbeing strategies and has consulted globally on corporate wellness. He hosts The Energy Equation and Modern Wellness podcasts. www.pillarwellbeing.com
ecovery, defined as ‘a return to a normal state of health, mind or strength’, remains a boom area in global wellness, and with good reason. The world needs recovery to shelter from the intensity of modern living.
Medical journal The Lancet recently cited our modern environment as “anxiogenic”, meaning it is likely to induce anxiety. It can trigger physiological alertness, overwhelm or worry thanks to factors including constant noise and light, digital overload, social comparison and a lack of restorative space. This means recovery is no longer just deliberate actions taken after exercise; it must be seen as a broader proposition to shelter body, mind and soul from the relentlessness of modern life.
Recovery’s many guises
When considering recovery, it makes sense to break it into categories. Are we discussing a recovering addict, a patient recovering from surgery or chemotherapy, an athlete recovering from a sporting event or a busy professional recovering from an intense work week? Anything that destabilises your return to baseline is the challenge; recovery is your journey back.
The original language of recovery is athletic, as a means to avoid soreness from exercise; this market is burgeoning. A raft of technologies from compression trousers and massage

Right: recovery services can help to combat the anxiogenic nature of modern life
The role of technology in recovery
n Technologies to elicit percussive massage and lymphatic drainage continue to arise and improve, while there’s growing evidence to support red light and photo biomodulation.
n Cold is also extremely effective when clients are coached and supported into using it effectively.
n For parasympathetic activation, there’s evidence to support floatation tanks, both wet and dry, and sensory deprivation technologies.
n In the broader recovery space, there are interesting developments in vagal tone activating devices like Neurosym and Sensate, which drive the body into a calmer state. These devices seek to induce physiological calm in the parasympathetic nervous system to allow energy restoration.
n Expect to see further innovation around the use of binaural beats, stacked with other haptic and thermal treatments. Pushing the brain into a deliberate physiological rhythm sets the tone for benefits ranging from calm and recovery to enhanced focus and flow state.

“Spas need to be clear in their intention before investing in infrastructure, training and technologies.”
Oliver Patrick Pillar Wellbeing
guns to hot/cold contrast therapy and hyperbaric chambers, which all began as sports science, are distilling down into the general population.
Recovery from the rigours of daily living has broader appeal, but perhaps reduced consumer understanding. This is recovery as a pseudonym for rest and recouperation – the deliberate act of restoring energy against ever more demanding lifestyles.
Servicing the need for recovery
The spa industry can play a role in both of these forms of recovery, but before it can service the need, that need must be accurately identified. Is your spa offering services for athletes after

training sessions or stressed business executives approaching burnout and needing help to break the cycle?
The equipment, culture, treatment and messaging for each of these propositions is very different.
Without determining what type of recovery is required, it’s easy to misstep and do more harm than good. Spas need to be clear in their intention before investing in infrastructure, training and technologies.
Going back to basics
The opportunity for spas to become true recovery centres is open and exciting, but in a world where the word recovery still means little to most people, it’s up to you to do your research and lead the narrative.
Before creating any recovery programming, it’s vital to consider whether your offering includes ways to help improve sleep, as this is the

Oliver Patrick Pillar Wellbeing

master key for all recovery processes. Next ask if you’re also offering ways to rehydrate, refuel and rest – these are the foundations of solid recovery. Now you can address more specific recovery offerings.
The biggest crossover between all forms of recovery is managing excessive inflammation. Modalities that target inflammation should therefore sit at the heart of any strategy. Safe options here are heat therapy, with Finnish saunas better evidenced for cardiovascular health, but infrared proving a more tolerable and detoxification centric method of creating heat stress.
The technologies entering this space are robust in mechanism but need curation in context. The human element remains vital – spas must explain this new science rather than hoping consumers intuitively ‘get it’.
Clockwise from right: Pillar Wellbeing has partnered with Raffles London at The OWO; technology can play a crucial role in recovery programmes; both physical and mental aspects to recovery must be considered

Lemi Group
An Italian manufacturer of luxurious treatment room furniture for more than 35 years, Lemi is renowned for its unique designs and superior technologies
What should spa operators look for when choosing treatment couches?
Comfort is paramount, so look for high-quality beds with adjustable mattresses that offer both softness and support. Ergonomics are crucial for therapist wellbeing; opt for couches with electric height and tilt adjustments to prevent strain and ensure your therapists maintain proper posture.
Couches should be made from high-quality materials with surfaces that are easy to maintain to ensure long-lasting performance. Versatility is also key; consider couches that can accommodate various treatments, from massages to facials, and provide ample space for therapists to move freely. Advanced technologies such as heating systems or integrated vibroacoustic features can also make treatments more immersive and memorable.
How do Lemi’s treatment beds contribute to therapist wellbeing?
Therapists play a crucial role in the success of every wellness experience, so our products are designed to

comprehensively meet their needs. With a focus on practicality and safety, our mattresses feature padding suitable for energetic massages, with rounded corners to prevent discomfort.

Derived from the ancient Greek word meaning ‘to flow’, Nao is said to symbolise harmony and continuous transformation. Overseen by spa manager Anastasia Konstantaros, Nao aims to inspire a lifestyle change in its guests.
At the spa’s core is a targeting of the 12 hallmarks of ageing – the key biological processes that are responsible for decline in later years. Among these are chronic inflammation, epigenetic changes, disabled autophagy, telomere attrition and mitochondrial disfunction. The aim is to extend both the lifespan and health span of guests.

Prior to arrival guests complete detailed questionnaires, then at the property, additional tests provide a comprehensive analysis of their health. Led by doctors and the team of wellness practitioners, key biomarkers are focused on using state-of-the-art diagnostic tools including Styku and Pnoē metabolic analysis.
The wellness space features eight treatment rooms, infrared sauna, a Brain Gym and two consultation rooms. Electric full-body cryotherapy is complemented by hot and cold plunge baths and a photobiomodulation room. Leadership for change
Lyndall Mitchell, founder of Aurora Spa & Bathhouse in Australia, discusses sustainable leadership and how to nurture lasting change in your spa business
In today’s ever shifting business environment, success is often equated with rapid growth and return. But for wellness organisations to thrive, leadership must look beyond profit to create enduring value for individuals, communities and the environment.
Sustainable leadership transcends corporate obligations – at its essence, it’s about equilibrium. Success cannot come without sustainability. Sustainable leaders are those who balance profitability with wellbeing and corporate goals with ethical practices, placing as much weight on the welfare of their teams, the environment and their broader societal responsibilities as the health of their business.
Despite the challenges this approach can present, it’s critical for businesses aiming for true longevity and significance. Research indicates companies prioritising sustainability enjoy a competitive edge, with greater loyalty from customers, employees and partners.
Inclusion is imperative
Over almost three decades since founding Aurora, I have learned that sustainable leadership thrives in inclusive environments – taking on a variety of perspectives enriches decision-making and drives innovation. Inclusion is more than just

an ethical choice; it’s imperative. At Aurora, staff input is built into how we operate, with structured systems that encourage the team to share ideas and express concerns.
Our supervisors meet weekly to align on business objectives and bring frontline team feedback into planning. It was at one of these meetings that we learned guests were missing key information during verbal check-ins and the team came up with the great idea of creating a pre-arrival audio orientation that guests receive before their visit. This has improved both the guest experience and operational flow.
We also run quarterly reviews for all
staff that focus solely on their personal wellness and professional development. The aim of this is to help our team grow and thrive, but we often find that the process also reveals ways to improve operations.
Twice a year, we bring in expert educators for sessions that support the personal and professional growth of our team, enhancing their capacity to manage stress, set healthy boundaries and fulfil their potential.
Resilience is a pillar of leadership
Recent years have highlighted how imperative it is for spas to be adaptable and agile, ready and able to withstand setbacks and even grow stronger from them. Key to achieving this is building a team culture that normalises growth, flexibility and resilience. When setbacks

happen, it’s important as a leader to frame them as learning moments and explore opportunities for change. When bookings are down or conversions aren’t happening, engage your team to understand the situation from their perspective and elicit ideas for turning things around. We did this after discovering that only 50 per cent of our spa guests were using the bathhouse, which was creating inconsistency in the guest journey and operational flow. After brainstorming with the team, we decided to include bathhouse access with all treatment bookings. Guests subsequently commented that the bathhouse was the “missing piece” in their relaxation journey, and it created a smoother operational flow.
Environmental wellbeing
The wellness sector offers a compelling model for fostering sustainable leadership. While wellness traditionally focuses on individual wellbeing, extend this commitment to the community and your spa’s ecosystem. We cannot help improve our guests’ personal wellness without considering the environment.
The business benefits of sustainable leadership
n High staff retention Stability creates a skilled, cohesive team invested in your mission and your guests.
n Strong guest loyalty Personalised care and consistent staff relationships lead to repeat visits by guests.
n Improved guest satisfaction Pre-arrival audio orientation and a focus on recording detailed guest notes in your spa software contribute to guest satisfaction.
n Reduced staff burnout and sick leave Embedding wellness into your business will lower sick leave and foster a calmer, more energised and focused team.

Five ways to lead with integrity and sustainability
1. Integrated wellness culture
Wellness isn’t a perk, it’s embedded into daily life. Staff rituals, wellness days, gestures of gratitude foster an environment where people thrive.
2. Circular guest learning tools
Look to extend your impact beyond the spa and help guests carry wellness into their everyday lives. For example, develop a guided meditation ritual for guests to use after their spa experience.
3. Eco-aligned growth
Your expansion and new offerings should be aligned with environmental values. Choose mindful product partners, reduce water waste through
At Aurora Spa, sustainability is a guiding principle and we aim to create a mutually nourishing ecosystem where the business thrives because its people are thriving.
Wellness allowances, ongoing education, cross-training and role flexibility, smart scheduling, personal development programmes, wellness check-ins, mentoring and structured feedback channels – all these things help to create a nurturing environment where team members feel valued, supported and aligned with the business’s mission.

innovations like Defender filters, and design rituals that reflect seasonality and place.
4. Collaborative innovation
Translate your team’s creativity into your operations by implementing their ideas, communicating results, celebrating wins and learning from missteps. Innovation should be a shared journey, never top-down.
5. Community and staff investment
Points systems, education budgets, in-house experiences experiences and flexible scheduling are ways to continually invest in your people – their voice shapes everything that you build.
Values and motivation
To lead sustainably, it’s vital that strategies originate from a profound understanding of your own values and motivations. If a leader’s personal principles don’t align with the goals and culture of a business, it’s hard to operate authentically and consistently. This involves continually educating oneself on best practices while seeking guidance from mentors who are already exemplifying these values.
It can encourage your leaders, and indeed your team as a whole, to consider these questions: how do
our actions impact the community we serve? What environmental footprint do we leave? Do we source responsibly? Are we augmenting sustainable wellbeing among our team? How are we contributing to broader global challenges?
Nurturing emerging leaders
Leaders who are unwavering in their commitment to sustainability ensure that future generations inherit a world filled not only with flourishing businesses but also thriving ecosystems and communities.
The journey towards sustainable leadership begins with a mindset that is rooted in curiosity and action. Although change does not occur overnight, consistent, incremental efforts can eventually produce meaningful results.
As the wellness leaders of today, it is our role to lead with purpose and responsibility, reassessing the impact of every decision and action, and integrating sustainable practices within every level of our organisations. This way we’re inviting a future where business success is intricately tied to global wellbeing.

Bespoke rituals... naturally
Emma Webber, co-founder of Natural Spa Factory, discusses the pioneering brand’s holistic approach to skin wellness and its commitment to empowering spa operators
Established in 2009, Natural Spa Factory has always had a forward-thinking approach to business. Supplying the spa and hospitality industries with distinctive natural and ethical skin and bodycare products and treatments, it places great emphasis on offering a seasonal, personalised range that can be tailored to suit specific needs. This includes bespoke treatment protocols that empower spa therapists to be more creative and flexible.
Founded by Emma Webber and Jeremy Smith, the Bath-based brand works with leading UK spas including Lucknam Park, Archerfield House, Celtic Manor, Chewton Glen, Moddershall Oaks and Monart Spa. Its private label projects include partnerships with the Newt in Somerset, Galgorm and the Spa at Carden Park.
Focusing on botanically sourced ingredients, Natural Spa Factory uses sustainable herbs, plants and flowers in its formulations. Free from parabens, SLS, MCI, and MI, its products are produced in small batches to ensure freshness and quality, and packaged using eco-friendly materials.
Helping to empower spas
Offering businesses the freedom to create bespoke guest journeys, free from prescriptive protocols, the brand offers a range of support for independent spas, helping them to find differentiators in a crowded market.
Seasonally updated rituals for spring/summer, autumn/winter and at Christmas allow spas to reflect natural life cycles, embrace their sense of place and build on storytelling to create beautiful bespoke menus.

“We encourage our spa partners to talk about what they do, rather than what we do.”
Emma Webber Co-founder, Natural Spa Factory
“We aim to empower our spa partners and encourage them to talk about what they do, rather than what we do,” says co-founder Emma Webber. “We’re an enabler. We give them products and support to help them to be more creative. Businesses should be their own drivers, not driven by product houses.”
Products with purpose
The brand’s product line includes gender neutral skincare, bodycare, haircare and some lifestyle products including candles and room diffusers.
“At Natural Spa Factory we’ve really honed in on ensuring that each and every one of our products hold a
purpose,” Webber explains. “From our positive environmental impact to the use of a circular economy and steps towards becoming B-Corp later this year, it’s about more than being the best in toxic-free, natural skincare.”
The brand’s award-winning collection also features dedicated products for mothers and babies, with specific offerings for each skin type from dry to combination and sensitive skin.
Moving beyond beauty
Natural Spa Factory is transitioning from its cosmetic focus to a holistic wellness approach that considers the emotional, neurological and environmental aspects of wellness product development.
“We are looking at next generation functionality and biotech ingredients,” says Webber. “We want people to feel good, not just look good, which is why we are exploring the neurological benefits of ingredients and how this can enhance emotional wellness.
“We have an NPD consultant driving this forward. We’ve also got in-house project development and a project manager working alongside some really good chemists.”
A focus on biotech ingredients and anhydrous (water-free) formulations demonstrates the brand’s genuine commitment to sustainability. With new products due to launch later in 2025, expect to see more exciting developments.

The peak of wellbeing
We speak to Alice Lightfoot, director of spa and fitness at Jumeirah Carlton Tower, about how it is raising the bar for wellness at the Peak Fitness Club & Talise Spa
REPORT BY MARK SMITH
Jumeirah Carlton Tower is an iconic London destination famed for its luxury hospitality and international clientele. Overlooking the world-famous Sloane Street in the heart of Knightsbridge, the property is part of the Jumeirah collection, which has a portfolio of 31 properties across the Middle East, Europe, Asia and Africa. The group currently operates 17 spas globally and has three properties in development: Le Richemond in Switzerland, Asora Bay in Dubai and a project on the Red Sea in Saudi Arabia.
During an 18-month refurbishment as part of a major £100 million (€117 million) renovation of the entire hotel in 2021, the extensive spa and wellness facilities in the Peak Fitness Club & Talise Spa were completely reimagined by design house 1508 London. The refurbishment at the hotel aimed to raise the bar for spa and wellness in London. Under the direction of Alice Lightfoot, recently appointed director of spa and fitness, the property
intends to further elevate the wellness offering for hotel guests and its large membership, to include medical testing and partnerships with wellness providers including Sanctum.
Lightfoot joined the property in November 2023 as spa and fitness operations manager before being promoted. Her new role includes responsibility for the strategic and operational direction of the spa and wellness division. This includes ensuring the team delivers an exceptional luxury experience that aligns with the Jumeirah brand. Her remit includes the day-to-day management of the hotel’s Talise Spa and fitness facilities, while also driving long-term initiatives that enhance guest satisfaction, revenue growth, and brand positioning.
“We really want to create an all-encompassing wellness space, where it’s not spa with a gym, but it's a place that's really embracing every aspect... we’re also really trying to get other departments on board with wellness,” says Lightfoot.
Performance, empowerment and intention
The Peak Fitness Club & Talise Spa is spread across three floors of the 17-storey tower, including a tenth-floor gym that capitalises on an abundance of natural light and stunning views over London. Placing fitness and rejuvenating wellness experiences at the heart of its offering, its three-pillar approach includes performance, empowerment and intention.
“Part of what we aim to do is create a space for self-discovery and also make people realise that they need intentional rest,” says Lightfoot.
On the hotel’s second floor, Talise Spa offers facilities including a sauna, a pink salt crystal steam room, a Jacuzzi and a truly iconic 20m swimming pool lined with poolside cabanas for relaxation under a double-height glass ceiling
Talise Spa has five treatment rooms and offers an extensive treatment menu for the face and body including manicure and pedicure treatments. To complement a longstanding relationship with Omorovicza, in 2025 the spa launched two new

brands. Ground Wellbeing brings its transformative selfcare rituals and spa experiences to the property, and, in a UK exclusive and first for the brand, Swissline will be offering its results-driven facial treatments on the menu.
In addition to tailored body and facial treatments, wellness therapies available at the spa include osteopathy, acupuncture, craniosacral therapy and sound baths. For hotel guests, a selection of in-room treatments are also offered from the massage collection.

Membership matters
Accessible only to a limited membership and hotel guests, the Peak Fitness Club offers the latest Technogym equipment, fitness classes and gym facilities with breathtaking panoramic views across the capital. The Peak club lounge offers a selection of healthy, nutritionally balanced meals for members as they enjoy stunning views of the city.
The Peak has a membership of around 900 – aged from 18 into their 90s. A full membership starts from £6,000 for the year with a £2,500 joining fee. There are different tiers of membership rising to Platinum, which is £22,000 for the year.
“With our membership, from a hotel perspective it's like having a really long-term guest who's staying with you for a month – but we have 900 of them, and they all share the same room,” explains Lightfoot.
Testing for improvement
Fitness and health are key drivers of the member experience and each receive a personalised Peak Performance screening to determine their goals and objectives. This is to be further enhanced by the launch of a unique partnership with a human optimisation medical concierge service. Clinical experts will visit the property to undertake a variety
of blood and health tests, which will be analysed at a private London medical clinic and will inform each member’s programmes.
“We are trying to create a more rounded approach by adding another dimension with the medical side of things,” says Lightfoot. “This medical concierge service will be an enhancement to the membership fee and is designed to elevate the rounded wellness offering in the space.”
The tests will take a deep look at health, especially focusing on more than 100 blood biomarkers to highly personalise the guest journey for optimal performance and longevity. For example, if burnout and stress are key issues, cortisol levels can be checked and a programme of spa therapies from Ground Wellbeing that work on the vagus nerve and targeted movement and relaxation sessions can be recommended. These diagnostics will also influence the allocation of personal training programmes and nutritional advice, as well as client referrals for further diagnostic tests and procedures at a clinic if needed.
Above: the Peak Restaurant and Club Lounge offers nutritonally balanced meals in a light-filled sanctuary from the city

Intelligent fitness
The Peak recently acquired Technogym’s Bio Strength equipment, which features AI technology that offers intelligent workout guidance. The patented Biodrive system uses new AI-powered aerospace technology to ensure maximum neuromuscular activation as well as correct exercise setting and execution. Personalised training programmes and full guidance through biofeedback are designed to offer improved results.
“A key benefit is that the machinery helps users perform exercises in the correct form, making workouts easier and more effective,” says Lightfoot. “Members have commented that the exercises feel easier because they’re being done in the right format.”
The Bio Strength equipment is part of the facility’s broader strategy to create a ‘work smarter, not harder’ approach to fitness, using advanced technology to optimise workout experiences and

“Wellness is a key priority for our guests, offering access to some of the world’s most renowned brands within an urban yet serene setting, all in the heart of London.”

help members achieve their fitness goals more efficiently. Programmes will be directed by the personal training team and aligned with the Peak Performance screening.
Given the social aspect of membership, group classes remain hugely popular with Pilates and yoga the most in-demand. The programme extends to events such as belly dancing and boxing classes as well as functional sessions such as Body Boost.

Beyond the spa walls
In line with the strategy to create a wellness offering beyond the spa walls, the team is working with guest relations on the introduction of an in-room Bath Butler service.
“We are going to work with Ground Wellbeing on this new service,” explains Lightfoot. “Using the products, our team will pour the bath, go through the different ranges of products, explain them, and take the guest on a journey through intentional rest.”
A new addition to the property is the partnership with Sanctum. Renowned for its immersive, mindful movement classes, the team is set to offer these highly engaged sessions for members in the coming months. The aim is to elevate the wellness experience for guests, bringing high energy but with a spiritual, mindful connection to the self.
“We are becoming more of a wellness space as we have a spa as well as a first-class fitness facility. We are really embedding the brand pillars and working to help people benefit from intentional rest and to elevate their experience,” concludes Lightfoot.

Resurface retreats aim for a flow state with movement and mindfulness
Offering unique immersive retreats across Europe, Resurface aims to transform mental wellness through flow science. The company was founded in 2017 by Josh Dickson, a therapist, trauma clinician and leader in positive psychology, following extensive research into flow – the heightened mental state achieved during immersive activities such as surfing, painting, or pottery.
Dickson has integrated his theories into residential retreats as well as group and individual therapy sessions, combining movement-based practices, psychoeducation and flow-inducing activities along with memory consolidation techniques.
Guests will learn how to enhance their flow state, improve sleep and foster pathways to mental growth with activities including surfing in spectacular locations. These are combined with mindfulness, movement, guided hikes and contrast therapy.
This year the team is offering a Peak Performance retreat in Norway, new Moroccan retreats focused on burnout and creativity, and private retreats in Devon addressing grief, balance and self-esteem. www.resurfaceuk.com

Letting Go leads to self-discovery at Lefay Resort & SPA on Lake Garda

The award-winning eco spa resort on Lake Garda in Italy, Lefay Resort & SPA has introduced Letting Go, a programme centred around self-discovery, contemplation and not trying to control life with the latest health and fitness fads.
“Holding on to things, concepts or people, does not create space within us, but rather weighs us down and prevents us from experiencing new events,” says Dr Stefania Doria of the Lefay SPA Method Scientific Committee.
Rooted in Classical Chinese Medicine, the aim of the programme is to abandon the concept of control and create space to observe and experience new things, bringing renewal and confidence. It follows four stages: letting down defences; a focus on breath; opening the senses with music, sound and inner voice; and a return to wonder with an invitation to feel free to be yourself.
Massage, body scrubs, water shiatsu, phytotherapy and nature immersions form part of the guest journey alongside use of the facilities. www.lefayresorts.com
Norway’s Farris Bad introduces Deep Listening sauna music sessions
Two-hour rituals rooted in ancient sweat ceremonies and the healing power of music are being held at Farris Bad in Norway. Development manager Lasse Eriksen says the experience is designed to create a deep sense of presence, openness and connection.
After washing, guests enter the sauna where an aufguss master gently guides them into the first sweat for an awakening of the senses. A plunge into the cold Skagerrak Sea offers contrast therapy to wash away thoughts and tensions.
In the sauna, a short story is told about an artist and an album then the album plays in full, on vinyl, through a high-fidelity speaker.
“It’s a felt experience, a meditation, a shared emotional journey,” says Eriksen. “As part of a sauna ritual, music resonates on a much deeper level than we often realise. The heat softens not just the muscles, but the emotional body.”
The session concludes with a final dip in the sea and time for gratitude and reflection. Artists have included The Cure, Kate Bush, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Aretha Franklin and Depeche Mode. www.farrisbad.no

It’s festival time for spas
Wellness festivals have become a regular feature during the summer months as people seek more than just music from their getaways. We explore how spas are embracing the concept
While music festivals have embraced spa and wellness as part of their broader programmes, in recent years dedicated wellness festivals have launched as consumers seek more than a sound stage and a well-trodden campsite to satisfy their expectations for a summer break.
Attractions can include sauna rituals, yoga, sound baths, wild swimming, stargazing, dancing, exercise classes, breathwork, arts, mindfulness and cooking demonstrations. They also extend to traditional spa treatments and talks and expert panel discussions. Attracting big names is part of the draw, with elite writers and wellness luminaries often presenting sessions in intimate settings.
“Wellness festivals are thriving as people crave time away from the pressures of modern life to reset, reconnect and rebalance,” says Amber Lort-Phillips, co-founder, The Big Retreat. “There’s a growing awareness that wellbeing isn’t just about fitness or mindfulness, but about nourishing the mind, body and spirit in an inspiring environment.”
Festival-style spa events
The spa industry is learning from the world of festivals about guests’ desire for a sense of community and shared experience. In response, spas and destination resorts are offering bespoke festival-style itineraries, such as SenSpa at Careys Manor in the New Forest, UK, which held its own one-day event.
Waves of Wellness at Bedruthan Hotel & Spa in Cornwall returns for a second year in 2025 with nature-connected creative activities as well as breathwork, movement and mindfulness. “Waves of Wellness offers a rich and restorative blend of experiences all set against a stunning coastal backdrop,” says Emma Benney, group brand, marketing and sales manager for Bedruthan Hotel & Spa.

Immersive and transformative
These are more than marketing opportunities for a business, they present an opportunity to deep-dive into wellness across multiple days and are fully immersive and transformative.
Six Senses has created two different wellness festivals – Alma Frequency and Harvest. The former, taking place this year at Six Senses Crans-Montana, Switzerland, brings together a handpicked group of pioneers in health and wellbeing with an ethos of community, connection and celebration.
“At Six Senses, I’ve witnessed how our

festivals transcend typical events to become transformative experiences,” says wellness pioneer Anna Bjurstam. “These gatherings weave together what I believe wellness truly means – connection, joy and growth.”
Now in its ninth year, Harvest at Six Senses Kaplankaya promises to explore the past, present and future through bold conversations and fresh perspectives, challenging old frameworks on a personal and global level. Among the international speakers, musicians and wellness practitioners will be Alejandro Bataller, vice-president of SHA; Satish Kumar, former monk and peace pilgrim; and

world-champion free diver Arthur Guérin-Boëri.
“These festivals represent what I always envisioned: wellness expressed through celebration, and celebration as a path to healing,” says Bjurstam.
Immersive and transformative
In Greece, Euphoria Retreat has announced its first wellbeing festival: Macrozoe The Greek Path to Longevity. The ten-day immersion explores the ancient Greek philosophy of living well for longer through movement, biohacking, mindfulness, nutrition, human connection and extraordinary experiences. The programme aims to engage with guests on transformation experiences in a community centred space. www.careysmanor.com | www.bedruthan.com www.sixsenses.com | www.harvestseries.com www.euphoriaretreat.com | www.wellnergy.com www.happyplaceofficial.co.uk www.feeltheverve.com www.thebigretreatfestival.com https://dorset.campbestival.net/slomo-festivalcomes-to-camp-bestival

Swing me to sleep
Mark Smith meets Ibu Fera, wellness mentor at Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan, to discuss the nurturing Sacred Nap ritual that offers restorative peace for guests

Ibu Fera is the wellness mentor at Four Seasons Resort Sayan, Bali in Indonesia. A former Buddhist nun who studied the Dharma in monasteries across Asia, Fera leads complimentary meditation classes twice daily at the property and hosts a series of Life Talks at the spa each week. We ask her about the daily Sacred Nap ritual that invites guests to relax and enjoy the restorative benefits of being suspended in a silk hammock.
How was the Sacred Nap developed?
I was inspired to create the Sacred Nap while rocking my baby to sleep. I thought everyone should be reminded of how wonderful it is to be a baby. During that time, someone cares for you, nurtures you and makes you feel safe and loved. I created Sacred Nap, to help guests reconnect with those experiences.
Most of us have forgotten how good and

nurtured it felt to be rocked to sleep. I combine this with telling the life story of Buddha and chanting various mantras that I learned when I was a Buddhist nun for seven years. The soothing sound of the singing bowl offers more sacred energy for this experience.
Is this ritual a Balinese tradition?

Yes, most Balinese mothers rock their babies to sleep using a batik sling, singing traditional lullaby songs and telling a story until the baby falls asleep. Instead of a batik sling, at Dharma Shanti Bale we use our 100 per cent pure silk hammocks that were previously only used for AntiGravity Yoga. We now use them to make people fly and to fall sleep.
What are the main health benefits?
It offers tranquility, restorative rest and deep relaxation, which is good for boosting immunity, and helps to maintain healthy blood pressure, heart and brain circulation. It nurtures and supports guests and afterwards can be very rejuvenating. www.fourseasons.com/sayan

Velum brings a fresh atmosphere to spas

The newest innovation from shower specialist Aquaform, Velum transforms the atmosphere in pool spaces by recreating a range of atmospheric effects on the water. From light drizzles to intense thunderstorms, these elements are enriched by coloured lights, mist and ambient effects to stimulate the senses in a unique experience.
“The Velum system has been installed at Tria Spa at the MGM Hotel Macau (pictured) – a true sky rain simulation positioned above the pool,” explains Aquaform founder and CEO, Stefano Moretti. “We collaborated closely with Barr+Wray on both the design and technical aspects of the project. Thanks to the integration of LED walls, this multisensory experience combines water with dynamic visuals to create a stunningly immersive atmosphere.”
Velum adds depth and personality to any thermal or wellness area, reusing water from the pool to avoid unnecessary waste and minimise energy consumption.
“Velum reimagines the role of the pool, transforming it from a passive element into an active, sensorial part of the wellness journey,” adds Moretti. “It has been devised to enrich the spa experience and add visual value.”

Virtual spa design provides an immersive vision for investors
Sauna360 has created a CGI showroom that allows clients to see and make changes to their proposed spa facilities as part of their decision-making process

Viewed on a screen or VR headset, Sauna360’s new virtual showroom offers spa investors the option to customise the design and finishes of their installation before they are finalised.
Still photos, videos and realistic CGI provide a real-life model of the proposed spa that can also be used for pre-opening marketing. The virtual showroom can even expand to illustrate outdoor wellness gardens, for example.
“We’ve invested in creating our virtual showroom as we wanted to give operators the option to fully immerse themselves in their proposed spa before they finalise plans,” says Peter Mitchell, spa and wellness designer at Sauna360.
“The virtual showroom allows us to present our products, ideas and concepts, and, for example, highlight how social wellness will integrate with traditional wellness, or use a panorama option to navigate around a spa and explore all the rooms, viewing wellness solutions as they’d look in situ.”
Leading wellness innovation
Sauna 360 has also supplied and installed a unique floatation tank at Damu Spa at the Mandrake, London. Spa guests enter the circular, multi-sensory Origin Pool through a water curtain to experience zero-gravity flotation with low frequency vibration, enhanced by sound, chromotherapy and water haptics.
“We installed a series of anti-vibration mountings to enhance the vibrational and sound therapies and bring the treatment alive,” says Mitchell. www.sauna360uk.com
