Innovative solutions for complex obstacles PROJECT: The Owairaka Te Auaunga Stormwater Upgrade (TOC011) CONTRACTOR: Piritahi Alliance, Demspey Wood & Hick Bros CLIENT: Piritahi VALUE: $33.8m The Owairaka Te Auaunga Stormwater Upgrade (TOC011) was a significant project for Kainga Ora-Homes and Communities and Piritahi. TOC011 involved removing the combined stormwater/wastewater system and separating the networks to provide the necessary infrastructure capacity for approximately 1000 new homes being built in the neighbourhood. As well as significantly reducing the potential for flood events by diverting overland flow paths, the project has also resulted in cleaner water entering the creeks and stormwater network. Huge challenges were overcome, including six-metre-
deep basalt rock excavations in residential streets, close to fragile underground and overhead services and houses. Complex methodologies were engaged to best manage community impact, including pepper drilling, fracture expansion and rock breaking, an approach that reduced noise compared to alternative, commonly used methods, all the while, protecting localised services. Kainga Ora and Piritahi worked collaboratively on every aspect of the project to deliver this complex work, including extensive community engagement (prior to and throughout the project) and a carefully managed programme throughout the construction period.
