The St Marys Bay Area Water Quality Improvement Project driven by Auckland Council’s Healthy Waters department was a scheme funded by the Water Quality Targeted Rate paid by ratepayers.
The new pipeline constructed by McConnell Dowell reduces wastewater overflows to inner-city St Marys Bay and Masefield Beach by 95 per cent. As well as reducing overflows, the wastewater discharges to an outfall far away from places where people swim.
McConnell Dowell’s extensive
experience means it understands the importance of prioritising the social, cultural, and environmental components of each unique marine environment. As a result, it identified cost-effective options that improve buildability and reduce construction 81 4CONSTRUCTION EXCELLENCE AWARDS 2022 CCNZ / HIREPOOL impacts within its tender submissions. The ‘Construct Only’ contract commenced in January 2020 and was completed in June 2021. The project was completed incident free and two months ahead of the scheduled completion date.
