Trentham to Upper Hutt (T2UH) is part of the Wellington Metro Upgrade Programme (WMUP), a long-term programme of works being delivered by KiwiRail and Metlink.
It is the first fully BIM-enabled rail project in New Zealand involving approximately 3000m of new rail track and associated station redevelopment.
During procurement and the preconstruction phase, KiwiRail outlined its digital transformation vision, which allowed Downer and its supply chain partners to make the necessary investments in people and technology that has helped shape our mutual success on T2UH. There was a real
willingness by all parties to engage and learn together on the digital transformation journey. Through the intentional creation of a collaborative, high-performing team, KiwiRail, Downer, and consultant, Aurecon, have achieved breakthrough innovations on T2UH, which have provided game changing safety and productivity benefits for working in the rail corridor. Key innovations include 93 4CONSTRUCTION EXCELLENCE AWARDS 2022 CCNZ / HIREPOOL machine control and avoidance technology, clash and service strike avoidance, and a process for upfront as-building. The project kicked off in September 2019 and was completed well within budget and on time in October 2021, with zero LTIs.
