Transport hub links airport and city PROJECT: Puhinui Station Interchange CONTRACTOR: McConnell Dowell Constructors CLIENT: Auckland Transport VALUE: $51.3m Puhinui Station Interchange, delivered by McConnell Dowell and Built Environs, is a key component of the Southwest Gateway in Auckland, a programme aimed at enhancing public transport connectivity between Auckland International Airport and the CBD.

It is also a catalyst for wider bus and rail connections to enable more sustainable transport modes. The new station, located in the heart of Puhinui, incorporates AirportLink bus stops, pick up and drop off zone and short-term parking bays, cycle facilities, new lighting and CCTV systems, and

landscaping. Along with modifications to the existing central island train platform, works included an elevated concourse featuring stairs, lifts and escalators, a HOP ticket gateline, staff and retail facilities. Construction started in late September 2019 and the new station opened in July 2021, with landscaping completed in November 2021. The upgrade has transformed Puhinui Station into a major bus and train interchange, and provides a 10-minute bus service to the airport and Manukau centre. The station has been future proofed to allow two additional rail lines and associated platforms.
