Lakefront legacy PROJECT: Rotorua Lakefront Redevelopment Project CONTRACTOR: HEB Construction CLIENT: Rotorua Lakes Council VALUE: $15.3m The Rotorua Lakefront has long been an attraction in its own right, but Rotorua Lakes Council (RLC) wanted to return the space to a more natural design, the way it would have been pre-European, more accurately capturing the flow of the lake’s edge. HEB Construction undertook the Rotorua Lakefront Redevelopment Project, Stages 1&1a, the construction of an elegant boardwalk (designed by Isthmus) tracing the ancient shoreline, with bridges criss-crossing the water, simulating waka pulled up on the shore as they once would have been. Marine works in a sensitive environment always present a challenge, but our experience in this type of work minimised risks to the environment, the local koura (crayfish) and the RLC. This $15m project, from October 2019 to July 2021, was the first stage of an extensive lakefront redevelopment of

the Rotorua Waterfront. This project reestablished the values of this national taonga, making it a central hub for locals and visitors. Works included creating terraces along the edge of the lake, building new retaining walls, installing the new boardwalk, and soft landscaping with all native plants. The result is a striking new design that ties the lake into the surrounding area, creating a world-class public space.
