The site is a 110m high vertical rockface. State Highway 1 runs directly below the site and is bordered on the opposite side of the road by a large seawall protecting the highway from the Pacific Ocean. SR10 has been a source of rockfall onto SH1 for many years, and the rockfall risk increased after the 2016 magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Kaikoura which caused widespread damage to road and rail infrastructure along the east coast. NCTIR awarded Rock Control the SR10 project, which ran from July 2020

through to June 2021. The project included the installation of a large rockfall canopy structure which extends over SH1. Pinned TECCO mesh, Drape mesh system and shotcrete were also installed to provide further protection to road users. The Rock Control crew were supported by a team of highly experienced engineers from Aurecon, WSP, Engeo, Tonkin + Taylor. NCTIR project managers and site engineers managed traffic and public relations which allowed Rock Control to focus on construction tasks. All parties involved bought valuable resources who all pitched in to deliver the project.
