Homer Tunnel is a remarkable section of the Milford Road linking Te Anau and Milford Sound/Piopiotahi and an iconic link to Downer’s past. In June 2020, Downer was given the opportunity to resurface the tunnel it helped construct in the 1940s. The tunnel was resurfaced in a tight window between summer tourism traffic, avalanche season, and the extreme cold and wet conditions that Southland experiences for many months of the year. One of the most remote pieces of

asphalt in the country, key to project success was setting up a mobile asphalt plant in Te Anau. We engaged local subcontractors with experience navigating the windy, icy road between the tunnel and Te Anau and manoeuvring heavy paving plant within the narrow tunnel itself. Downer is immensely proud of the role we played in resurfacing the Homer Tunnel, increasing resilience of the road network, and safeguarding our people and the environment during delivery in challenging conditions.
