Interviewer: You are known as Baker Boy, but what is your real name? Baker Boy: My last name is actually Baker. You can say that I have kept my original name. My first name is Danzal. Interviewer: Tell us about your early years. Baker Boy: I was born on Milimgimbi Island, just east of Darwin. You can hear my childhood in my lyrics. I rap about fresh coconuts, mango trees and sea breezes. Interviewer: You were a very active young person, I believe. Baker Boy: I’m an island boy. I’m used to spearing fish and going hunting. I was also a member of the dance troupe, Djuki Mala with members of my family before I went into the music business. Interviewer: How would you describe yourself offstage and onstage? Baker Boy: Danzal is a quiet, humble kid who loves to talk to people. Onstage I am Baker Boy, crazy on the mic, confident and proud, dancing with a lot of energy. I show my power and if I make a strong connection with people, they’ll feel it. Interviewer: You’re an unusual artist because you rap both in your first language, Yolgnu Matha and English. Explain the difference to us, please. Baker Boy: Rapping in Yolgnu Matha is totally different. It changes the beat and the pronunciation. There are different sounds which create a different flow. It’s easier for me to write songs in my first language than in English. Interviewer: You received a great honour, Young Australian of the Year for 2019. What was your message to young people?
