Prefixes
A prefix is placed in front of a word. The prefix usually changes the meaning of the word, but not the word class.
The prefix un means not, so it changes the meaning of the word happy to not happy:

Suffixes
A suffix is placed at the end of a word. The suffix usually changes the meaning of the word. Sometimes it also changes the word class.
The suffix -er means one who so it changes the meaning of the word to read to one who reads.
