Simple past

asked walked blew broke We use the past tense when we talk about actions that have already happened: Yesterday, last week, last year, in 2020 or five years ago. Regular verbs We add -ed to regular verbs in the past tense. I washed my clothes after the game. They helped a man across the street this morning. If the word ends with an -e, we only add -d. He baked a pie last Saturday. Irregular verbs Some verbs are irregular. That means we cannot simply add -ed in the past tense. Past progressive

Use for actions going on at the same time: Use for actions going on when something else happened:

Tom was writing a rap while Tim was playing the guitar.

While Mum was drinking tea, Dad was making dinner. I was changing my clothes when they walked in.

She was drinking tea when her phone rang.

They were helping a man across the street when the bus came.
