Adjectives are used to describe a noun. We come from a different planet. Her face turned a nasty colour. Susan’s visit was a total disaster.
Adverbs are used to describe a verb (how something is done). We do things differently on our planet. Now, listen carefully, young man! The children waited patiently in the kitchen. The pupil didn’t answer correctly. Adverbs are also used to describe an adjective or another adverb. Jack woke up unusually early. Camel meat tastes surprisingly good. Some adjectives and adverbs are the same: hard – hard fast – fast This is hard work. (adjective) Dette er hardt arbeid. She works hard. (adverb) Hun jobber hardt. Watch out!
Hardly has a different meaning: She hardly works. Hun jobber nesten aldri.
