Join me in welcoming the newly elected HOA Board. In March, residents elected three Board members and they are hitting the ground running. Attend monthly meetings in person at Sycamore House or via Zoom on the third Thursday at 5:30 PM.
In other news, spring is the busiest time of year for the HOA team! Landscaping is in high gear with mowing, edging, and plant enhancements around the community. High Sierra and HOA staff are preparing for the pools and splash park for opening Saturday, May 27th. Additionally, the Willowsford Waves North & South Swim Teams are entering their ninth season. Go Waves!
Design Review is at its peak with owners adding decks, landscaping, and even pools as they gear up for summer fun. Lifestyle is also in full swing. We have a great line up of events to enjoy this season including First Friday Happy Hours, Mother’s Day Brunch, Wineries at Willowsford, Splash Parties, and more.
Last but not least, we have ordered equipment for several playground improvements and replacements throughout the villages and will keep you updated on this and other projects in the Willowsford Weekly emails.
Finally, to our many new residents, welcome home! If you need key fobs, website access, trash receptacles, or simply have a question about the community, please email HOA@willowsford.com. It is our pleasure to assist you in ensuring you and your family enjoy all this unique community has to offer.
Willowsford’s Operations Team is excited about the spring season! For the second year in a row, Down to Earth Landscaping is caring for all four villages. Their efforts last season were a success and we saw positive improvements throughout the community. To streamline the look of the community, the HOA switched Brush Hog maintenance to March. This will sync our efforts with the Conservancy and, additionally, it will provide the natural environment for a full year moving into the growing season. It will also allow warm weather grasses to overseed for the next growing season.
We’re working on initiatives to preserve our trees by teaming up with Down to Earth Landscaping and Savatree to do various maintenance on our community trees to help them grow healthy and strong for the long term. We look forward to continuing to provide you with the most beautiful and natural community to live in!

by Thomas Thoma Resident & DRC MemberWillowsford’s Community Charter prohibits overnight parking of vehicles on public or private streets. A recent visual inspection found 165 cars parked overnight on Willowsford streets.
Standards are established to ensure Willowsford continues to be one of the most desirable communities in which to live. Overnight, on-street parking is prohibited for a variety of reasons including access for emergency vehicles and residents, safety of small children, and overall esthetics.
The first line of enforcement is you. Residents may report violations by emailing a date and time stamped photo of the vehicle to HOA staff (HOA@willowsford.com). Reports will be reviewed and remedies to address the violation will be provided as described in Willowsford’s Due Process Procedures. Most violations are corrected this way, but if the issue persists, homeowners may lose privileges to use community services and facilities (pool, gym, events, etc.) and/or a monetary fine may be imposed.
In 2021, we asked for your feedback regarding the prohibition of overnight, on-street parking. Survey response is as follows:
• Over 50% of respondents wanted to keep the existing rule and enforcement practices
• 12% wanted to keep the existing rule, but enhance enforcement
Overnight, on-street parking is prohibited by Willowsford’s Community Charter and more than half of the community views this as a good rule; some even want enhanced enforcement. Please respect the desires of your neighbors and abide by the rule.
If you love Willowsford’s natural beauty, then there are many things we, as a community, can do to preserve a healthy and greener future. At Willowsford Conservancy we celebrate over a decade of caring for the open spaces, grasslands and trails. Willowsford offers a place to appreciate reflection and recreation, take in the clean air, and enjoy the healthy food grown at Willowsford Farm.
Spending time in nature is not just a leisurely activity; it can be a purposeful investment for the health of our families. It seems the path of least resistance is to spend more time indoors, making the accessibility to green spaces even more valuable. At Willowsford Conservancy, we understand the importance of immersing children in nature. Our programs aim to spark new ideas for conservation and encourage
children to love the great outdoors while taking a break from screens. We want kids to be kids, explore our neighborhood nature preserves, and appreciate all that is Willowsford.
To celebrate nature, we invite you to Willowsford Conservancy’s 2nd Annual Earth Day Celebration on Friday, April 21, at the Boat House from 5pm-7pm. Families can enjoy a farm-inspired box dinner or bring a picnic, while enjoying an evening outside with a live band and children’s activities.
So, get outside and reconnect with nature! Please consider joining the Conservancy team for Earth Day on April 21, or maybe just make time for a walk on the trails. Every day can be Earth Day at Willowsford!
While growing up in Virginia, Fiona used to have a dream of being the therapist characterized by a couch in her office and dark wooden furniture, and even glasses (even though her vision is just fine!) She studied Psychology at JMU and then went on to UVA for her Master’s and Education Specialist degrees in Mental Health Counseling. During that time, she completed an internship where she had an opportunity to work in a variety of different mental health programs, which made her rethink her dream.
One of those programs was a substance abuse treatment group for teen girls. That experience ignited her passion. In that room, she saw amazing girls with strength, personality, intelligence, talent, and compassion. She learned then that people struggling with mental illness and/or drug use were much more than stereotypes - something that has been reinforced repeatedly in the past 15+ years working with intensive drug treatments, group and individual therapy, and as a prevention specialist.
After graduate school, she started working as a substance abuse therapist for teens in a community services office in Fairfax County. Thanks to this experience she discovered a passion for supporting people struggling with trauma and substance use. As a result, she has met some incredible people. She wants to spread the message that some of the smartest, most talented, empathetic people are struggling with drug use and mental illness. Fiona believes that people are complex and amazing. Her ultimate goal in public speaking is to reduce the unnecessary shame and stigma about mental health and substance use, and empower people to take charge of their own lives.
Fiona spent 10 years working in Fairfax County with teens and their families specializing in substance use and trauma. During that time she became more involved in substance use prevention activities and started thinking about how she could help people get ahead of this health issue. In 2017 she seized an opportunity with LCPS to focus more on prevention and early identification as a Student Assistance Specialist. Now she has the opportunity to raise awareness about substance use among parents, teens, and staff.
Fiona can’t seem to keep still so in her spare time she provides therapy part-time in private practice, began public speaking, and released a handbook for parents on teen substance use prevention: Read This and Call Me in the Morning. She unwinds with her husband and two boys watching/playing sports, getting outdoors, and traveling.
Do you know somebody who consistently puts others before themselves and supports others in need, whether large or small, but often flies under the radar? To nominate a fellow neighbor for this honor, send an email to billie.rose@n2co.com.

La’Nae and Paul Robinson and their two kids, Alyssa (13) and Paul II (12) have lived in Willowsford since 2017, and they have nothing but wonderful things to say about it. They love the “open spaces and the sense of community” with their neighbors, and they say that it’s been “amazing watching all of the children grow up. It’s truly a village!” The Robinsons are a close-knit family that loves to travel. La’Nae and Paul honeymooned in St. Thomas, where they went parasailing and snorkeling. They recently took a trip to Dunn’s River Falls and have gone scuba diving in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. They’ve also been to the Dominican Republic, where Alyssa and Paul II (“Deuce”) had the opportunity to practice their Spanish speaking skills, something they are both learning at school.
When they’re not at their studies, Alyssa and Deuce both play sports. Alyssa also enjoys rollerblading and drawing. Deuce is interested in math. The Robinsons love their quality time together, especially when eating out on Fridays and watching movies, enjoying Waffle Sundays, and decorating the house during the holidays while listening to Christmas music. La’Nae quips that her family specializes in sarcasm and fun. When Alyssa and Deuce describe their family in three words, Paul Jr. told us that “kind, smart and hardworking” sums his family up nicely. And Alyssa added “competitive, funny, and innovative.” It’s no wonder that Alyssa used the word “innovative.” She comes from a family of engineers. Paul Sr., a Pensacola native and alum of Florida A& M University, is a chief engineer with Booz-Allen-Hamilton and specializes in Cloud and DevOps.

La’Nae, an alum of Fisk University, is a software engineer. “I got into engineering at a very young age, from participating in STEM programs and my desire to understand how things work,” Paul said. “My excitement with STEM is also why I am passionate about mentoring youth through Booz-Allen and my fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi. With my wife and I both loving engineering, we would be delighted if our kids were to follow in our footsteps.” La’Nae grew up with a tech-savvy mom. “As a child, I loved watching my mother take things apart and put them back together, and I thought she was so cool for working on her computer all day. Later on, in high school, I was inspired by my uncle who was an engineer for NASA.” When asked what she enjoys most about being a software engineer, La’Nae added, “Working as an engineer allows me to be both technical and creative, which allows me to use different parts of my brain to make things come to life.”
In addition to their shared love of engineering, Paul and La’Nae bond over reading, music, and movies. In fact, La’Nae’s love of reading put her on the path to an exciting new entrepreneurial venture, the brainchild of her sister, La’Nesha Frazier. The sisters partnered to launch Bliss Books & Wine, an independent bookstore and wine lounge located in the beautiful and historically significant Hyde Park neighborhood of their hometown, Kansas City, Missouri. The business’s brick-and-mortar location just opened in February. Visitors can look forward to finding a book exactly to their taste while sipping wines and relaxing among the shelves--three things that La’Nae and La’Nesha both love!
(https://www.blissbooksandwine.com.) The store even caught the attention of Oprah Magazine--Bliss Books & Wine was featured in a recent article titled “127 BlackOwned Bookstores in America That Amplify the Best in Literature.” “The stories [of and by African-Americans] have always been there, and the experiences have always been there, but not everybody was comfortable talking about them,”; La’Nae is quoted as saying in the article. “So I think now that it’s more in the spotlight, it’s creating more conversations, and people are open to having conversations—and they’;re actually holding [the stories] in their hands and educating themselves on topics that they just didn’t think about. The bookstore allows me to share some of the things that I enjoy most with people who are seeking the same.”

Congratulations to our November Giveaway Winner, Jen Ebrat! She won a complimentary consultation and four-hour session with Jenn Snodgrass from The Styled Sort, and chose to focus on her pantry. In addition to her organizational services, Jenn offers the option to shop ahead for tools that will help streamline a space, or work with products the homeowner has on hand! For this project, Jenn used baskets provided by the Ebrats to group and sort pantry items.
“Working with Jenn was such a seamless process,” said Jen. “She did a fantastic job asking questions to understand our organizational goals and helping make the daunting task of transforming our pantry an absolute breeze. She’s such a pleasure to work with and I’d highly recommend The Styled Sort to anyone looking to organize and transform their space!”

BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR EDITOR JACKIE LOUH THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY VILLA MONTESSORI STONE RIDGE PHOTOS COURTESY OF ITPA AND CHAS SUMSER“In The Little Mermaid, I was in the Ensemble, so I played many different parts. The best thing was getting close to the cast and meeting new people. I loved joining a family with so much love and care for each other.”
- IZZY HARTMANN (GRANT)Have you ever been under the sea? Maybe not, but if you saw Independence Theatre and Performing Arts production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid, you definitely came close! A few Willowsford residents were a part of the production! Here’s what they have to say:
“I performed the role of Ursula and served as the head of marketing! I loved getting to interpret such an iconic Disney villain in my own way and embody her onstage. Becoming a character alongside a cast of many talented performers is such an amazing feeling. The most rewarding part is seeing the audience members of all ages that enjoyed the show!”
- JACQUELINE LOUH (GRANT) -- THAT’S ME!
“My favorite memory of The Little Mermaid was doing all of the wigs for the cast. It was so fun to do hair. Plus, I got to know my cast mates really well. I love performing because I can share my love of theatre and make amazing friends on the way!!”
- RILEY LUSK (GRANGE)“In The Little Mermaid, I played Atina, one of Ariel’s mersisters, and I was on the choreography team. One of my favorite memories was hearing the prologue for the first time during our dress rehearsal - it was so magical! I love performing because it’s so rewarding and hearing the audience’s cheers is so special every time.”
- ALLISON CLARK (GRANGE)
“I performed as the understudy for Prince Eric, where we broke our previous matinee record, and also as Chef Louis for the principal cast. I’d say my favorite part was doing a show as a prince and then 3 hours later going on as a crazy chef!”

For Chris and Jen Hansen, one of the best things about their new backyard was the views of the Conservancy land. They decided to make that a focus when creating a backyard oasis with Pristine Acres. During initial consultations with Pristine Acres, they mentioned that they would move to Wyoming if jobs would allow. Pristine Acres used that idea for guidance when designing, and incorporated natural materials wherever possible to create a rustic yet clean and refined look. Chris says, “I still can’t get over the stonework. For the bar, spa, reverse beam wall, and fireplace, they chipped each piece to fit. It was very time-consuming, but the end product is perfect. It’s a great example of how they live up to their quality.”
In fact, their favorite part of the design is the reverse beam in the pool, which allows for unobstructed views of
the woods while floating. And Chris says, “the most unique aspect of our project is the breezeway. Not only does it provide a constant breeze and cover for eating and grilling, but it also isolates the backyard from adjacent properties thanks to the Conservancy border.”
The Hansens describe their backyard now as “unique, practical, and natural.” They are so happy with the end result, they wouldn’t change a thing: “It really comes down to trusting the contractor you work with,” says Chris. “Their Project Managers are fantastic. At one point, we had three of them sitting on our side porch debating the trim tile for the pool for over an hour!” He added, “Pristine is where quality meets craftmanship!”

The hunt for a perfect gift to send can be daunting for anyone.
Luckily, there’s a local company just minutes away from the Willowsford neighborhood that can make sure a package delivery is one that exudes happiness. Cheers in a Box makes it easy to be thoughtful.
Jessica Shea is an Aldie resident and CEO of J Shea, an event strategy and design firm. Under her firm, she’s been in the business of event planning and gifting space for over 20 years. During the COVID-19 pandemic when in-person events were not possible, she pivoted and created Cheers in a Box. “The purpose of Cheers in a Box was to help businesses when employees were stuck at home and missing connection,” says Shea. “Sending a gift in the mail to say ‘Cheers’, that then led to a professionally facilitated virtual event became the focus. We also wanted to support other small businesses, by purchasing their products and highlighting their businesses to our clients, including local artisans, mixologists, and winemakers.
The pivot continues as many events are now back in person. “For anyone living in the neighborhood, we have on-trend and quality gift boxes for all occasions in life that are ready to ship within 24 hours when the order is placed on the website. For businesses we offer complete customization with a model that is similar to Build-ABear,” she explains. The gift boxes can be customized to fit your business’s needs virtually or you can make an appointment at the showroom in
Chantilly, just 15 minutes from the Greens & Grove. “Boxes can be customized with logos on various products and packaging,” says Shea.
When you visit Cheersinabox.com, the selection process is very easy to navigate. You can explore curated gift sets organized by occasion, or if designing your own box, you can use the box builder. Just select your box type in the first step and then peruse 150+ products specified under categories. There’s every event, season, hobby, and person in mind. Once you’re done building the box, you can add your personalized card and click complete to finalize and have the order started.
More than a “gift in a box” the savvy business team made up of event pros still offers those all-in-one virtual events for organizations who want to spread connect joyfully with their clients, staff, and attendees remotely. This not only brings the “tangible” fun gift in the mail but a thoughtfully-crafted virtual event experience to go along with it. A curated team of subject matter experts and a selection of themes to choose from deliver a flawless experience explains Shea.
New this spring, The Cheers in a Box Wine Club will launch and will offer small-production wines from all over the world delivered to your doorstep monthly. Shea encourages neighbors with a passion for a great wine to get on the email list to be one of the first to know at wine@cheersinabox.com. Currently, the Wine Club is licensed to sell and ship to Virginia, DC, Maryland and Florida.
Shea says she’s very passionate about supporting the community and the Stroll magazine is a wonderful platform to connect with neighbors and share what Cheers in a Box can offer them. “Sourcing a service or product from a neighbor is the definition of community to me, I am always referencing the magazine or texting Traci directly when I need a new vendor or service. Stroll Magazine is the perfect resource,” she adds.
In addition to running her businesses, Shea has a busy home life with three children and her husband Matthew. They have their son Davis (9), daughter Drew (7), and son Drake (4). “I’m a work hard/play hard kind of person who loves to focus on business during the week, and enjoy time with my family and friends on the weekends,” says Shea. “Matt and I have a mutual passion for wine (hence my excitement to extend Cheers in a Box into the wine industry!) and love to relax with the kids and a great bottle of Cab.” Shea also jokes about their secret obsession with karaoke which to their neighbors is not much of a secret anymore, she notes.

Sometimes, a Willowsford Culinary event will not only yield delicious recipes, but it can also ignite a spark of inspiration. That’s what happened to the Ahmeds recently. “Riz and I are huge foodies. We enjoy going out to restaurants and wine tasting at vineyards. We met Chef Emily Worth and Sommelier Nick Materese at Willowsford’s Spain vs Italy wine duel event, and so were inspired to host a more intimate dinner and wine tasting event at our house” said Jenn. Also, “We just finished renovating our kitchen with Grace Thomas Designs, and we wanted to kick-start the New Year and my birthday by having a private chef and wine sommelier. It was an unforgettable experience!”
Jenn and her husband Riz hosted 8 couples at their house in the Grant in January, with details guaranteed to create a unique evening. “The theme was ‘A Journey through the Five Taste Senses.’ Chef Emily Worth helped us craft a tasting menu and paired it with Nick’s wines,” Jenn said. She added, “The guests were asked to dress in their best cocktail attire. We began the evening with a champagne toast, then gathered around the kitchen island and dining table for the
wine and food-tasting experience.” Photographer Jenny Sessoms was on hand to capture the memories.
Jenn said a highlight of the party was Nick’s storytelling behind every wine: “It was so informative and entertaining!” Guests delighted watching the crew cook and plate every dish in the comfort of the Ahmed’s kitchen, and everyone enjoyed tasting each course best of all.
Jenn summed up the event by saying, “Chef Emily Worth’s gift for food design and prep, Nick Materese’s wealth of knowledge and eloquent storytelling, and Jenny Sessom’s talent for photography helped make this one of the best birthdays ever. Also, enjoying the company of our friends and family (postpandemic) in our beautiful home and neighborhood made this truly a night to remember!”
Resident Nayer Beshay recently had an exciting trip to Qatar to attend the World Cup! It was organized as a lastminute surprise by his wife Christine to catch the Quarterfinal games. Since he has previously attended World Cups, he was able to navigate the process for entry permits, buying game tickets and more with ease. During his stay, he also caught up with an old friend that had moved to Qatar and even had the chance to try out wearing an Arabic Gutra. Travel can often result
in unique situations: “at one point I found myself walking in the middle of a security escort for the Qatari First Lady Sheikha Moza in a public park,” he said. Additionally, “I was also interviewed on Arabic live TV outside the stadium!” he said. His favorite part of the four-day excursion was attending two games on the same day. As a result of his trip, Nayer has a recommendation: “Do not miss the World Cup experience...it’s coming here to the U.S. in less than 4 years!”
The Stroll Junior Writers got together at the Willowsford Lodge Boat House for a variety of activities for their monthly meeting in February. The get-together started off with sharpening their interviewing skills with an icebreaker called: The Ultimate Question. The writers came up with a question that would elicit interesting, unique, or informative responses so that they would continue to learn and improve as reporters for Stroll. Then, the groups broke off into stations of three: brainstorming ideas and decorating chefs’ hats, practicing their photography skills, and making some deliciously fluffy Belgian waffles from scratch with the great help of Chef Meagan!
Meagan Morrison is a personal chef whose talents are available for meal prep, cooking lessons, birthday parties, catering drops, and more. Her company, Palate Sensations, provides a wide variety of services, cuisine and events. We’re so glad Chef Meagan was able to help us stir up some fun at our meeting! In February, Cub Scout Pack 2013 held their annual Pinewood Derby competition. David Eisenberg, David Vincent, Charlie Prindle, and Jeremy Gaither organized and ran the derby supporting all 44 racers, including many Willowsford residents, who entered the event.
The Pinewood Derby is a beloved Boy Scout tradition started in 1953 by California Cubmaster Don Murphy. Scouts begin with a block of wood, four plastic wheels, and four nails for axles. The finished car must use all nine pieces, must not exceed a certain weight, or a certain width and must fit on the track used by the pack.
Henry Moseley, Tiger Den 1, built his derby car with his father Jason Moseley. Kerri Harris leads Henry’s Tiger Den 1 helping all den members learn the Boy Scout Oath and how it applies to competitions like the derby. The derby is an
opportunity for scouts to experiment with car building and demonstrate good sportsmanship.
Kohen Coryea, Tiger Den 1, won Fastest in the Pack with his car coming in at 3.1659! Jack Mohney won Funniest Car. John Phillip Potter won Most Scout Spirit. Wyatt Forster won Most Heroic. Finn Harris won Best Use of Color. Parker Gaither won Most Innovative Design. Congratulation to all Pack 2013 Derby winners!
If you are interested in joining Pack 2013 please email cubmaster@pack2013.org.

Bailey Mitchell is a sophomore at Lightridge High School and the head costume designer for the Lightridge Theatre Department. She has been involved in theatre since sixth grade when she assumed a lead role for the Quantico High School main production, as a military child. Before attending Lightridge, Bailey preferred the acting side of theatre, but when she moved to Northern Virginia from North Carolina, she wanted to try something new and chose technical theatre as her elective. At first, Bailey wanted to work in set design since she enjoyed woodworking at her previous school. When no one signed up for costuming, she jumped at the opportunity to lead the costume department as a freshman. Bailey had never sewn
before and quickly discovered it was a necessary skill for costuming. Thankfully her mother has some sewing knowledge, so Bailey got a crash course in how to use a sewing machine and follow simple patterns.
Last year Bailey focused on altering clothing donations. She dabbled in making simple costumes, like capes mid-year. This Spring, Lightridge is performing the musical Bye Bye Birdie, and Bailey wanted to make as many of the costumes from scratch as she could. Her parents donated hundreds of dollars in fabric and supplies. By mid-February, Bailey, Sophie and Lilly Coyle made five poodle skirts, four petticoats, three dresses, started on four more dresses, and plans to make several more petticoats, and shirts for the male actors. Everything they have made is adjustable in size, so the theatre department can use them again for other shows in the future.
Even with all the costume team’s hard work, the costume department (and others in the theatre program) need quality donations. Lightridge is a new school and is starting with minimal costumes, set pieces, and props for their productions. In the costume department, they are currently looking for fabric to make costumes from scratch, quality costumes such as clothes for royalty, old military uniforms, 1920’s flapper-like clothing, good quality wigs, hats, costume jewelry, wedding and bridesmaid dresses, ball gowns, victorian clothing, men’s suits from all time periods, and anything specific to past time periods. If you have donations,, or would like to support the Lightridge theatre department, please reach out to the Lightridge Theatre Boosters and/or consider joining the booster club (you don’t have to have a student in the theatre department or even at Lightridge to join boosters!).

Tickets for the Bye Bye Birdie can be purchased online before the show at a discount, or at the door for full price. The show will be held at the Lightridge
You finally close your eyes to rest and before you know it the 5 am alarm clock is going off in your dream and all you can think is, “it can’t be morning already!” You attempt to hit snooze several times before you drag yourself out of bed because let’s face it; your “new year-new you”, quit about 30 days ago. Yup, she just rolled out on you. So there has been no workout routine, no healthy eating and you’ve been so stressed, you have tossed back more glasses of wine than your waistline can handle!
It’s now 6:45 am, the bus will be here and so will your first meeting if you don’t hurry up and get to the office early enough to get all the work done you fell asleep doing the night before … even if that office is right downstairs! The day breezes by but not without a call from the school that child #2 needs to be picked up due to a tummy ache. So you
rush out, skip lunch and again before you know it the day is over. You’ve managed to complete 50% of your tasks because we both know that work was pretty much over when you had to pick up your little one. You get home and the evening goes just like the morning. After school activities, one last business call, practices and unfinished work. Everyone needs something from you meanwhile no one has realized you have very little left to give.
As a mom of 4 girls, in 4 different age ranges from early childhood to young adulthood; I have had to learn the importance of self-care. I am a business owner (Granger Financial), an executive life coach, a mom, and a wife. Needless to say, I am always “mommin’ in the middle!” In the middle of work, zoom calls, work events, cooking, cleaning, conferencing, and even pottying (iykyk). You name it and you better believe this mama is juggling at least 5 things at once. So, this past January I decided that 2023 was for me. I realized that if I was going to be a great boss, a better wife, mother and friend then I needed to find more time to put myself first. I needed more girlfriend time, more “no kids” time, more quiet time and more ME time! And that is exactly what I did!
If you’re like me and your battery remains on 25% more than 100% it’s time you do the same. Whether it’s a quick 2-day staycation in Middleburg on your own mini “eat, pray, love journey” or picking up a new yoga class and meditation course. Or maybe for you, it’s signing up for a 10K or a girls’ night out shopping with dinner and laughter at your favorite local winery. Whatever it is, don’t let YOU lose YOU in 2023! This is your year, your time and your moment to be the very best version of yourself! Go for it and do it for the girl who fought so hard for you to be where you are today!

Introducing Machine Aquatics! Machine is a fun, competitive swim club for year-round swimmers. Machine was created in 2001 and was meant to help each swimmer reach their maximum potential. It was created by Dan Jacobs, Christian Doud, and Paris Jacobs. Now, you may have heard of a swim club called Snow. Snow got bought by Machine, and now the teams have combined. Machine offers competitive swimming for all levels. They hold their tryouts during summer, which determines your placement so you can be the best you can be, and place you in a division/group based on your skills. Most Machine Aquatics practice locations are here in NoVA, and they compete with relative counties and clubs such as NCAP, Blue Wave, CSC, and many more. Practices average about 90 minutes, and the coaches are encouraging and helpful. Machine also offers a Long Course program for the summer. I discovered Machine Aquatics because I wanted to improve my swimming skills and continue the sport I love. I started swimming for the Willowsford Waves last summer, and then I found I had a passion for swimming. I continued to improve the whole season, and when summer ended I started searching for year-round swim clubs. I chose Machine Aquatics, and I enjoy it very much. I truly recommend swimming as a sport. If you do find elation in swimming, Machine Aquatics might be right for you too! Find them online at www.machineaquatics.com.
I am Alex Fetterman, one of the founders of The Hercules Foundation, which was established in 2016 in memory of Sgt. Ryan
M. “Hercules” Lindenbaum of the Fairfax County Police Department. Ryan was a lifelong friend of mine who tragically passed away from brain cancer. He was a hero in every sense of the word, and we wanted to honor his legacy by creating an organization that would provide financial assistance to local law enforcement officers in need.
The majority of our fundraising comes from our annual golf tournament, The Hercules Classic, which is held each May. This year, the tournament will be held on May 19th, 2023 at the Pleasant Valley Golf Club in Chantilly, VA. This event is our primary fundraiser for the year and always sells out quickly. We welcome everyone to register, donate, volunteer, or become a sponsor by visiting herculesfoundation.org.
The funds raised through our organization are used to directly support local law enforcement officers and their families. We make lump sum payments to the families of fallen police officers to help with their financial needs,
award $1,000 to the recipient of the Fairfax County Police Association Officer of the Year, assist families in the law enforcement community who have been unexpectedly struck by tragedy and are in need of immediate assistance, and spread holiday cheer through our “Adopt-A-Cop” program.
Being able to experience the joy and appreciation shown by the local police officers that we support is truly heartwarming. Since 2018, my family and I have been fortunate enough to live in a community that embodies the same spirit of heroism and selflessness that we strive to support through The Hercules Foundation. The ability to be surrounded by nature, wildlife, and a sky full of stars, while also being on a street where our kids can safely play with friends and experience the joys of living in a neighborhood.
My wife volunteers at all of our fundraising events, and our three kids, ages 9, 6, and 3, love wearing their Hercules Foundation t-shirts with our lion logo, acting as our own little cheerleaders. We are grateful for any support that we receive, whether it’s through donations at herculesfoundation.org, volunteering, or simply spreading the word about our cause.

Mike Daugherty and his furry friends live in Willowsford, in the Grant. He has three amazing dogs: Cara who is 7 1/2, Bentley who is 4, and Keller who is also 4. Cara, born 2015 in England, is a very smart and observant dog. She is also a very dedicated mother. In 2018 she had a litter of 11 puppies. One of her puppies didn’t open its eyes when the time came. Mike soon found out Keller was blind. He ended up keeping both Keller and his brother Bentley, so Keller wouldn’t get lonely. Because Keller was blind, he was named after Helen Keller who was not only blind but also deaf. The dogs spend a lot of their day outside. They even have a special part of the yard just for them, equipped with a doggy door! Some of their favorite toys are empty plastic water bottles, sticks, or just what the other dogs have. Since Keller is blind, he has a heightened sense of smell and hearing. Because of this, Keller can memorize a house or area. He then knows where everything is located which helps him get around easier.
But Bentley is the goofball of the group; always playing and needing something to chew on. When they’re not bouncing around in their big backyard or playing with their favorite toys, they might be way up in the sky on a plane. This special privilege is because Mike is also a pilot. These lucky pups have been to Florida, Georgia, and even Michigan! There is never a dull moment at the Daugherty residence! Ever since they moved to Virginia, the dogs have also gotten more enrichment from animals. They are much more stimulated here with all of the wild deer. Keller especially likes to bark at them. But wherever they are, up in the sky, barking at animals, playing with toys, or even just taking a nap, this incredibly cute trio will always have a place in Mike’s heart.
Our much-awaited little princess arrived on the morning of September 5, 2022, at Stone Springs Hospital. She is the sister to two excited elder brothers: Ziyad and Zahran, and daughter to parents Faraz Rafi and Rafia Hashmi. She weighed 8 lbs. and was 20 inches tall. She came out with a head full of dark hair with a calm and quiet personality. Fortunately, post-Covid relaxed rules at the hospital allowed the siblings to visit her. Seeing such a little being in their company, the boys couldn’t contain their excitement and examined the baby girl closely to see how she functioned and tried to comfort her often.

Zoha’s dad carefully shaved her head at home which took more than an hour. Both boys patiently watched the head full of hair cleaned up. Traditionally, the worth of gold equivalent to the weight of the hair is donated. We also celebrated Zoha’s arrival with a festive dinner (referred as Aqeeqah in Islam) with family and friends. We are so thankful to have family, friends, and neighbors who came to welcome our little bundle of joy and helped with the transition in various ways!
