A SEAT AT THE TABLE

November highlights a sense of community, gratitude and belonging.

“Gratitude turns what we have into enough.”

Hello, Willowsford Community Residents,

November signals the start of the holiday season—a month filled with events, traditions, and gatherings that carry us right into December’s celebrations. Amid the football games, school events, and holiday planning, it reminds us to pause and focus on what matters most: connection, community, and gratitude.

This issue of Stroll Willowsford celebrates just that. November is also a time to honor our veterans, and we’re proud to share two features that pay tribute to their service. Our cover Family Spotlight highlights a Willowsford veteran family, while our Making a Difference article showcases an organization supporting veterans in meaningful ways.

A heartfelt thank-you to our Preferred Partners for making Stroll Willowsford possible. These trusted local businesses aren’t just advertisers—they’re partners who invest in building connections and strengthening the community we love. When you use their products or services, let them know you saw them in Stroll and appreciate their support of you and your community.

This season of thankfulness reminds me how grateful I am for our readers, residents, Junior Writer Team, the Willowsford HOA, the Willowsford Conservancy & Farm, community supporters, and sponsors. Your stories, photos, and support make Stroll Willowsford possible—and keep it meaningful for the entire community.

Stroll Willowsford | Board Update

Hello neighbors! The Willowsford Board of Directors is excited to share several important updates as we close out the year.

First, a reminder that the 2026 HOA Budget will be voted on at the November 12th Board Meeting at 6 PM. The proposed Budget was released in October, giving Residents time to review the changes from the prior year. We encourage everyone to take a moment to examine the adjustments in assessments, operating costs, and planned investments before the meeting. As always, our goal is to balance fiscal responsibility with the amenities, services, and lifestyle programs that make Willowsford exceptional. Your feedback remains an essential part of this process, and attending the November Board meeting is a great way to stay informed and engaged. We are truly looking to receive as much feedback as possible from Residents.

In addition to the Budget discussion, we are preparing for the launch of another Resident Survey. This will serve as a follow-up to the 2023 Survey, which provided the foundation for our current Strategic Plan. That feedback has already guided major initiatives in community maintenance, lifestyle programming, and long-term planning. As we look ahead, the Board needs your input once again—particularly as we prepare to release details on several upcoming capital improvement projects. These projects will not only enhance our amenities and common spaces but also involve significant investments. Your perspectives on scope, priorities, and costs will help ensure these efforts align with the community’s vision. Again—your voice matters!

Please watch for announcements with Survey details in the Willowsford Weekly email updates. Together, we can continue building a thriving and forward-looking Willowsford community!

HOA Sustainability Initiatives & Partnerships

In an ongoing effort to protect the beauty, health, and resilience of our shared green spaces, our Homeowners Association is proud to highlight its commitment to environmental sustainability. This includes active involvement with the Loudoun Invasive Removal Alliance (LIRA) and internal green initiatives aimed at reducing energy consumption and fostering a more eco-conscious community.

Restoring Native Ecosystems & Partnership with LIRA

As you may know, Willowsford has joined LIRA, a volunteer-based organization dedicated to removing invasive plant species from natural areas in Loudoun County. Invasive plants like English ivy, Japanese honeysuckle, and Tree of Heaven can choke out native trees, degrade soil quality, and reduce biodiversity. Left unchecked, they threaten the health of local ecosystems and the long-term beauty of our community’s natural spaces.

With the joint efforts of LIRA, Willowsford is:

• Organizing community volunteer days in collaboration with LIRA to clear invasive plant species from shared trails, wooded areas, and stormwater management zones.

• Educating residents on how to identify and responsibly remove invasives from their own yards.

• Promoting native planting initiatives, encouraging the use of plants that support local wildlife and require fewer resources to thrive.

Volunteers of all ages and skill levels are welcome to join the efforts. It’s a great way to get involved, meet neighbors, and make a direct impact on the environment we all share! Additionally, the HOA recently applied for funding through Loudoun’s Invasive Plant Removal Grant Program. This new $2 million dollar grant program is aimed at combating invasive plant species across the county and assisting communities who play a direct role in reversing invasive damage—in turn building a healthier, more resilient Loudoun. Stay tuned for updates on the grant program!

Going Green Indoors with Energy Efficient Improvements

Sustainability doesn’t stop at the edge of the woods—it extends to our buildings as well. In a recent upgrade, the HOA has replaced all incandescent and compact fluorescent lightbulbs in the community clubhouse and recreation areas with high-efficiency LED lighting.

Benefits of this switch include:

• Up to 75% lower energy use, reducing our overall carbon footprint.

• Longer bulb lifespan, lowering maintenance costs and waste.

• Better lighting quality, enhancing safety and comfort in shared spaces.

This small but impactful change supports our broader goal of creating a more environmentally responsible community while also saving money over time.

BALANCING NATURE

Balancing Nature: Willowsford’s Deer Management Program Willowsford is more than a neighborhood—it’s a living landscape where people, wildlife, and nature intertwine. One of the Conservancy’s most important responsibilities is maintaining that balance, ensuring both the land and its residents can thrive. One part of that stewardship is the Deer Management Program, a carefully designed initiative that promotes both ecological health and community safety.

Why Manage Deer Populations?

White-tailed deer are beautiful and important animals, but their populations in suburban areas throughout Virginia have grown beyond what local ecosystems can support. In places like Willowsford with ample open fields and woods, and increasing development pressure surrounding it, the deer population here has skyrocketed to an unsustainable and harmful level.

When deer populations exceed healthy levels, the consequences ripple throughout the community:

• Forest Health – Deer browse heavily on young trees and understory plants. Over time, this reduces forest regeneration, weakens biodiversity, and alters the natural balance of plant communities.

• Damage to Native Vegetation, Agriculture, and Landscaping – Many residents know the frustration of carefully tending a garden or landscaping project, only to have it destroyed overnight by deer. Balancing our population helps reduce excessive browsing on desirable plants.

• Public Safety – High deer densities increase the risk of deer-vehicle collisions. In Loudoun County and across Virginia, these incidents pose serious safety hazards for drivers and result in costly damage each year.

• Tick-Borne Illness – Dense deer populations contribute to the spread of ticks, which can increase risks of Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses.

The Conservancy’s long-running Deer Management Program addresses these challenges head-on, with the goal of restoring balance between wildlife, our community, and the land. We’ve seen great improvements in our forest health since implementing this population management program as seen in these photos taken of the same spot in August 2018 and then again in October 2023 after several years of the program.

How the Program Works

The program runs annually from October through January and is carried out by a select group of qualified hunters, many of whom are residents of Willowsford. Hunters must meet stringent requirements, including state licensing, safety training, and proficiency testing. This ensures that only responsible, highly skilled individuals participate.

The Conservancy uses a combination of archery and firearms hunts in designated areas. Archery hunting, which allows for precision and minimal disturbance, occurs throughout the season. Firearms hunts are held in specific zones on select dates. Safety remains the highest priority, with the majority of trails in The Grant, The Greens, and The Grove closed during firearms hunting. For the 2025-2026, these closures will occur on:

• Mon - Fri, November 3 - 7

• Wed - Sun, November 12 - 16

• Mon – Fri, December 1 - 5

• Wed – Sun, December 17 - 21

Some residents are asking if the program can be expanded, and staff will explore this with the state and our volunteers for the 2026-27 season. In the meantime, two additional weekend firearms hunting dates were added this year to increase the success of the program.

For more information about the Deer Management Program including the schedule, maps of the hunting zones, and FAQ, visit Willowsford Conservancy’s Document Center by scanning the QR CODE.

FRESH FROM FARM

Fresh from the Farm, All Winter Long

The Farm Stand in The Grange is officially closed for the season! This little corner of Willowsford has been a hub of connection all summer long, filled with the bustle of neighbors catching up, families selecting their weekly produce, and the simple joy of slowing down to appreciate fresh, local food. While we say goodbye to The Grange Farm Stand for now, the Farm Stand at the Boat House will remain open throughout the winter season on the following dates:

• November 6: 4-6 p.m.

• November 20: 4-7 p.m.

• December 4: 4-6 p.m.

• December 19: 4-7 p.m.

• January 8: 4-6 p.m.

• January 22: 4-6 p.m.

• February 5: 4-6 p.m.

• February 19: 4-6 p.m.

On the Farm Stand days preceding Thanksgiving and Christmas, we’ll be stocking the stand with extra goodies and keep it open until 7 p.m. for an extended hour of shopping so you can make your holiday meal a Willowsford one.

Don’t forget, our Winter CSA is just getting started! It’s not too late to sign up to receive farm fresh food all winter long. Becoming a CSA member means you’ll enjoy a curated selection of our best farm offerings every other week. It’s a wonderful way to bring a bit of the farm into your home during the colder months, and it helps keep our farming operation strong and sustainable year-round. The winter CSA will have eight fulfillments from November 6 through February 19, with a short break for the December holidays.

Making a Difference

Stars & Stripes NOVA Committee has one directive: provide support for veterans, first responders, and families in need throughout Northern Virginia. Comprised of volunteers with diverse service and professional backgrounds, the Committee is well prepared to address these urgent needs, thanks to their collective experience.

“As a veteran, I’m proud to see the Stars & Stripes NOVA Committee step up for those who’ve worn the uniform. Their work reminds us that service doesn’t end when we come home—it’s carried on by communities like this that stand behind veterans and their families.” Willowsford resident Alex Rivera (this month’s cover spotlight family!)

“The Stars and Stripes NOVA Committee members are excited that Alex Rivera will be the cover story in Stroll Willowsford. Our motto is ‘Leave No One Behind!’. Alex exemplifies the best of our veterans, and we wish to express our gratitude for her service and advocacy of veterans,” says Philip Langer, Chief of Staff for the Committee.

Founded in 2022 by Philip Langer as a 501c3 charity organization, Stars & Stripes NOVA Committee provides aid in various ways, including annual distribution of thousands of pounds of food and clothing on-site at one of their sponsors, Green Lizard Cycling in Herndon. Since 2022, the Committee has helped more than 500 veterans and first responders, and more than 5500 families in Northern Virginia.

“In the three short years since the founding of the Stars & Stripes NOVA Committee, it is so gratifying to experience a growing roster of volunteers, many vets or from military families, dedicated to the wellness of veterans, first responders, and families in need,” Langer says.

PEP, PRIDE & PIGSKIN

Youth athletes bring bigleague energy.

AUGUST 27TH marked the start of a new season for Dulles Youth Sports, as many Willowsford families came out to Byrnes Ridge Park for the second annual Football and Cheer Season Kickoff Pep Rally. From football players to cheerleaders, the event was full of energy and anticipation. Families gathered to cheer on young athletes as football players of all ages took the field for intersquad scrimmages. On the sidelines, cheerleaders brought their energy and spirit, setting the tone for a season full of pride and teamwork. The day became even more memorable with the attendance of several Washington Commanders Legends, who posed for photos with young players and cheerleaders,

creating unforgettable moments for kids who dream of one day stepping into their shoes. The Dulles Thunder football program also unveiled its new look this season, debuting fresh Storm Grey jerseys and a rebranded Thunder logo.

Sponsors were well represented too, with posters of the program’s 12 generous partners lining the field. Together, their sponsors have contributed over $15,000, helping fuel the league’s remarkable growth. In just the past year, DYS football

expanded from 9 teams to 15, now representing 260 families locally and connecting to thousands more through the Northern Virginia Youth Football League (NVYFL). From the huddle to the sidelines, Willowsford is well represented: local athletes hit the field and several parents lend their expertise as coaches, proving this season is truly a community effort. The pep rally showcased just how far DYS has come from its origins while marking the start of a new season for their wonderful athletes and cheerleaders.

DYS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing youth athletic

opportunities in the Loudoun County Dulles District. They offer football, cheerleading, track & field, cross country, volleyball, softball, wrestling, basketball, and golf, bringing a wide range of competitive and recreational options for families in the area.

Their players are outstanding on their own, but their amazing coaches make the league better than ever. They each bring experience as past players or coaches from high schools, colleges, and even some from the NFL, ensuring that players receive the guidance they need for success. That same level of care extends to player safety. DYS makes this a top priority by equipping athletes with brand-new helmets, pads, and equipment, and by having certified trainers present at every home game in case of injuries. Beyond athletics, DYS takes pride in supporting causes that matter. During October, proceeds from games and events go toward raising awareness for breast cancer, connecting the program to the larger community it serves.

For families in Willowsford looking for a competitive sports league, Dulles Youth Sports is an amazing community to be a part of, with their season kickoff pep rally serving as a perfect example of their spirit.

POND ROOFING & EXTERIORS

60 Years of reliable, lasting service

WRITTEN BY STROLL WILLOWSFORD STAFF WRITER LIA HOBEL

Aging windows, worn-out gutters, and deteriorating roofs or siding can significantly impact the comfort, safety, and aesthetic appeal of your home. Over time, these essential components of your home’s exterior can suffer from wear and tear, leading to issues such as drafts, leaks, and reduced energy efficiency. When it comes to upgrading these critical elements, choosing the right contractor is paramount.

For homeowners in Fairfax, Loudoun, and across Northern Virginia, choosing the right contractor for an exterior project can feel overwhelming. With countless options available, how does one

distinguish between a good contractor and a great one?

Pond Roofing & Exteriors understands the importance of highperformance products and stressfree installation. The company offers top-quality materials from trusted manufacturers like CertainTeed, James Hardie, and ProVia. Their meticulous process ensures that every project, whether it’s replacing aging windows, installing new gutters, or upgrading your roof and siding, is executed with precision and care. “We want it to be peaceful for homeowners, for our teammates, for the installers out on the job site, for our vendors and

we want it to be peaceful for their community,” shares the owner of the company, Pat Readyhough.

Pond Roofing & Exteriors delivers this result in a number of ways. They follow a thoroughly documented and continually refined process, from the first inquiry through installation and warranty support. This system ensures clear communication, expert consultation, professional installation,

and long-term protection, allowing the company to handle hundreds of projects each year without compromising quality or trust. By focusing on process over products, Pond Roofing & Exteriors helps homeowners avoid common contractor selection mistakes and guarantees a smooth, satisfying project outcome.

Mistake #1:

Choosing Based on Speed Alone One of the most common mistakes homeowners make is choosing a contractor based solely on how quickly they can start the job. When facing an urgent issue like a leak or visible damage, it’s understandable to want a fast solution, but Pat warns that speed can be a red flag: “If somebody’s not busy, why are they not busy? If they can come to you tomorrow and then replace your roof the day after that, that’s a big problem. That means that there’s other people not trusting them to do something.” A reputable contractor with a strong reputation usually has a backlog of work. While you shouldn’t have to wait an unreasonable amount of time, a busy schedule is a good indicator of a trusted and reliable business. It shows that other homeowners have done their homework and chosen that company for a reason. Rushing the decision often means ending up with a contractor lacking the experience, reputation, or reliable process needed for a quality outcome.

Mistake #2: Focusing Only on Price

When evaluating bids for home improvement projects, it’s essential to look beyond just the price. The total cost typically reflects three key components: materials such as shingles, siding, and windows; labor, meaning a skilled and insured crew; and operations, which include project management, customer service, vehicles, insurance, and warranty support. If a bid is far lower than the rest, it’s likely that the contractor is compromising in one of these areas— choosing inferior materials, hiring inexperienced or uninsured workers, or lacking the operational infrastructure to support your project and future warranty needs. As Pat wisely says, “If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is. Contractors who undercut the competition are usually cutting corners somewhere, and that’s where problems show up later.” Investing a bit more in a company with a solid reputation and robust support is ultimately an investment in the long-term health of your home.

Mistake #3:

Falling for High-Pressure Sales Tactics

Pat says this is a common pitfall in home improvement, particularly in the window replacement industry. Homeowners may encounter long, flashy presentations with dramatic demonstrations, followed by an inflated price that’s suddenly slashed if you commit “today.” These strategies are meant to rush your decision and

prevent you from thoroughly vetting contractors. Instead, Pat emphasizes that when a deal sounds unusually good, it’s often because critical corners are being cut—leading to problems down the road. A reputable contractor will offer fair, transparent pricing and give you time and space to compare estimates and make an informed choice, rather than pushing you into a hasty commitment.

By steering clear of high-pressure sales tactics and focusing on honest, transparent contractors, homeowners set themselves up for a worryfree renovation experience. When a Willowsford neighbor uses Pond Roofing & Exteriors, they can expect clarity, consistency, and peace of mind throughout the entire project. With their dedication to excellence and customer satisfaction, you can rest assured that your home is in good hands.

RIVERA

PHOTOGRAPHY BY PHOTOS BY LIS | THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY CHANTILLY NATIONAL GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB

With Veterans Day approaching, there is no better time to celebrate Army veterans who call Willowsford home. This month, we’re honored to share the story of Rey and Alex Rivera, a couple whose combined 50 years of military service reflects both dedication to country and deep devotion to family.

The Riveras’ journey began in Kuwait in 2003. Alex recalls the moment fondly: “I walked into the finance tent where Rey was working—and the rest is history.”

FAMILY Honoring Service

Together, they built a life shaped by love and shared service, which took them to assignments across the world, including Afghanistan, Germany, and Greece. In 2017, they found their permanent home in Willowsford’s Grange village.

Rey rose to the rank of Sergeant Major during his Army career, deploying to both Iraq and Afghanistan. While military life came with its challenges, it also brought unforgettable experiences. “Some of the most fun assignments we had were in Germany,” Alex shares, “and the opportunity to spend a month in Greece working with the American Embassy.”

Alex herself served 10 years enlisted and 18 years as a commissioned officer, retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Today, she and Rey are proud parents to two daughters—Aria, 13, and Penny, 6—as well as their beloved boxer rescue, Nike. Originally from Carolina, Puerto Rico (Rey) and Athens, Greece (Alex), the couple playfully calls their girls “Greekarican American.”

Aria is independent, funny, and caring, and loves to play volleyball, spend time with her friends, and listen to music. Penny, who has Down syndrome, is described by her mom as “determined, busy, silly, and full of love.”

Of their second daughter, Alex adds, “She’s made us better people with a different outlook on life.”

We love spending time with our amazing friends here—whether it’s Oktoberfest at the Missmers or Crabfest at the Pestones. They have become part of our family traditions.”

Life after the Army has been just as full for the Riveras. Alex, a graphic designer by trade, runs her own business, AP Creative Solutions. Together, the couple also owns Sharkey’s Cuts for Kids – Dulles, a venture inspired by Penny. Both businesses are grounded in giving back, partnering with local schools and organizations that support children.

The family also loves to travel. “When we’re not visiting family in Greece or Puerto Rico, we like to explore the world and expose the girls to as much diversity and culture as we can,” Rey says. At just six years old, Penny has already visited England, Canada, Germany, Spain, Italy, France, the Bahamas, Greece, Puerto Rico, and will add the Dominican Republic later this year.

Closer to home, the Riveras cherish the traditions they’ve built with neighbors. “We love spending time with our amazing friends here—whether it’s Oktoberfest at the Missmers or Crabfest at the Pestones. They have become part of our family traditions,” Rey shares.

This Veterans Day, we salute the Riveras. Not only for their service to our nation but also for the many ways they inspire the Willowsford community.

SCONES & SIGHTS

A double-decker tea tour makes city sightseeing sweet.

Have you ever thought it was possible to tour around a big city in a big pink bus snacking on sweets? Yes? No? Well, whatever the answer, this actually exists in Washington D.C., Chicago, Philadelphia, New York City, and a few other lucky cities around the U.S. This attraction is called Tea Around Town, and we had the chance to try it out in the summer. (We actually had iced tea because it was broiling outside. Luckily it was cool on the bus!)

The company opened its DC location last year, and it was an amazing experience. They provide commentary about the landmarks and sites that you pass, and there is also music when they aren’t chatting. It is about 90 minutes, though 15 minutes of that is boarding. Upgrade packages are also available and include skydeck seating, because yes, it’s a double-decker bus! You can also upgrade your food options. Petite is

the normal tea time they serve, but you can upgrade to a luxe package and get even more delicacies. If you couldn’t guess, they also have a very good selection of tea, plus you get a souvenir tea (or water) tumbler to take home. There are no age restrictions, so ages 0+ can ride on the bus, and 3 and under

Latte Love in Willowsford

Brewing connections one cup at a time.

BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER HANNA STOLLE, THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY LOUDOUN COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL

Some seek a jolt of caffeine to start their day; others find it a staple in their morning routine. Coffee has gotten our generation through some of the hardest days: deadlines, exams, you name it! This drink has always been a saving grace for us. But for some, coffee is more than just a drink. I would like to introduce Arman Khan, the founder of Cha Coffee Company. He has been a resident of Willowsford for 10 years in total! Mr. Khan has worked in IT as a Microsoft specialist in years past. However, his passion for coffee started about 3 years ago. This wasn’t planned, but it became a venture that would start to shape his life. It started off in a downto-earth kind of way, experimenting with a Facebook Marketplace coffee machine. Soon after, Khan founded Cha Coffee Co. in December of 2024! What I have learned from my interview with Mr. Khan is that there is a big difference between this local startup and other coffee shops. While chain stores might serve a product, Cha Coffee Co. serves something more vital: a connection. It’s Arman Khan’s mission to create a sense of community like the coffee shops of the past. Fun fact, almost every revolution started in a coffee or tea house! This is because, before electronics, coffee created a meeting place for people to share ideas! Khan adds, “For centuries, the coffeehouse has been a place where people from all walks of life can come together and

connect. My goal is to bring that feeling back through our drinks and service.” In my opinion, the sentiment and the flavors are equally impressive. In fact, they have a new menu coming out just for fall, including a honey lavender latte. It’s made from honey sourced by the Willowsford farm! If you think that’s special, Cha Coffee Co also does birthday parties, corporate events, and everything in between. They do custom menus for each event, so you can personalize your experience! As for the regular menu, Mr. Khan recommends the dirty chai: authentic black tea with spices and coffee. If you’re a kid and want to try some of his creations, they carry decaf and mocktails as well! If you loved hearing about Cha Coffee Company, imagine how amazing it would taste. Check out chacoffee.co on Instagram, or find them at the Willowsford Farm Stand!

Epic beach week brings neighbors together, big and small.

Our annual summer tradition with our neighbors has truly become the highlight of the season. This year was bigger and better than ever — 55 of us in total, with 33 kids and 11 adults all soaking in the sun, sand, and surf. It’s the kind of week that fills your heart and reminds you just how special our little community really is. It all started with our fearless leader, Willowsford resident Carey Deal, who put an idea into plan. She calls it “beach roulette” and boy does she make it a home run, skimping out on nothing- from catered meals, chef night for the adults, and umbrella and chair service every day to make it easy for all.

From riding the waves and building epic sandcastles to a fierce (and hilarious) tug of war showdown, the days were packed with nonstop fun. The kids were fearless and curious, even catching five sharks (don’t worry — safely released!), adding an unforgettable thrill to their beach adventures.

More than anything, it was about being together. Watching all the kids grow up side by side, creating lifelong friendships, and seeing the adults laugh and unwind — it was pure joy. These are the moments that become core memories for all of us.

We’re so thankful for the village this neighborhood has provided. It’s more than just a summer getaway — it’s a tradition rooted in connection, community, and love. Here’s to many more years of waves, laughter, and memories that will last a lifetime.

“Traveling with 55 neighbors seems crazy to everyone outside of this bubble, but in reality, it makes life easier, we get to parent in a village, we’re never alone in our struggles. Our kids have all grown up together and act like siblings, they love, they argue, they learn. We can only hope that they hold on to these memories and look back one day and smile, knowing they are loved by an entire community.”

Junior Writers explore luxury MedSpa vibes and skincare secrets.

For our September Junior Writer meeting, we visited Stone Springs MedSpa. Stone Springs MedSpa is a Stroll sponsor and is located conveniently near Willowsford. The team there welcomed us warmly and started off with a presentation from licensed master esthetician Madison Higgins about what a MedSpa is, and what skin care services they offer there. She also discussed how to correctly take care of your skin, and how important it is, and what they do in the office to help. Then we took a tour of the facility. It was much different than other doctors’ offices or lobbies. It

was warm and welcoming, with pink sofas and chairs, along with crystal chandeliers and relaxing music. It felt a little like a luxury hotel! Each treatment room was also unique, because they each had different luxury brand themes, like Tiffany’s and Gucci. We also spoke to Ande Burke, who is the Marketing Director, Loudoun Medical Group, about what it’s like to be in marketing in the medical field. Neighbors, Let’s Have Some Football Fun!

Friday, November 28

12:00–2:00 p.m.

Instead of battling the crowds on Black Friday this month, come work off Thursday’s Thanksgiving dinner with your neighbors at the first-ever Willowsford Neighborhood Turkey Bowl on Friday, November 28, from 12:00–2:00 pm. Sponsored by Aim High NFL Flag—coached and played by many Willowsford families—alongside Stroll sponsors Freda

& Shellie Real Estate and Kara with Potomac Title, the Turkey Bowl is a true community effort to bring neighbors together.

The event will feature flag football games for kids of all ages, neighbors cheering from the sidelines, plenty of laughs, and goodies with hot chocolate before the leftovers hit the table again. Got family in town for the holiday? Bring them too — the Turkey Bowl is fun for everyone.

“We love supporting events that bring neighbors together. Willowsford is such a special community, and the Turkey Bowl is a perfect way to combine family, fun, and tradition,” say Freda & Shellie Real Estate and Kara of Potomac Title.

Aim High NFL Flag has become a favorite non-profit for many Willowsford families, with kids and parents alike jumping in to coach, play, and cheer. “We offer recreational, elite, and allgirls flag football programs for ages K–8, and each season more than 100 Willowsford families take part—whether on the field or supporting from the sidelines. At Aim High, we’re more than just a club; we’re a family dedicated to developing players’ skills, character, and love for the game,” Freda adds.

Willowsford resident player Mason Cragg says, “Aim High is a great league where we have tough games every weekend. It’s fun to work toward a goal each season to try and get a Super Bowl ring at the end.”

“The first annual Turkey Bowl will be a great time for all. A large portion of the Aim High organization resides in the Willowsford area. Being the day after Thanksgiving, everyone will be in the football spirit and excited to play for a great cause. I hope this Turkey Bowl is a great turnout and is a tradition for many years to come,” says Willowsford resident Brian Bobby.

It’s clear this first Turkey Bowl is about more than football — it’s about community.

She loves cuddling, and if someone she knows comes near the driveway, she immediately comes running and gives a hug. My 4-year-old sister loves seeing Ivy and calls out her name loudly whenever she sees her from our patio. Ivy craves a lot of attention and loves to say hello whenever we are close by. She loves to bark at other animals, especially birds that fly nearby. Owners Chris Strickland and Ana Aviles take great care of her and make sure she always has plenty of love and playtime. Splash of Happiness

Transforming ordinary afternoons into extraordinary poolside moments.

Willowsford Resident Amanda and her husband Walter Gilligan set out to transform an underused backyard into a true gathering place—and found the perfect partner in NVBLU, Inc., a trusted Stroll Willowsford sponsor. After researching several pool design companies, she says their team immediately stood out for professionalism, creativity, and a genuine desire to bring her family’s vision to life.

“From the very first consultation, NVBLU impressed us,” she recalls. “They took time to understand our lifestyle, budget, and design preferences, then presented ideas we hadn’t even considered.” Detailed 3-D renderings helped the family visualize every feature before construction began, blending beauty and functionality in a way that felt custom-tailored to their space.

Throughout the build, communication remained clear and consistent. The project stayed on schedule, craftsmanship was top-notch, and every question received a prompt answer. The finished pool, she says, exceeded expectations: “It’s not only stunning—it’s become a favorite gathering place for friends and family.”

The new backyard oasis soon took on even deeper meaning. On February 9 of this year, her father passed away unexpectedly. “It was an extremely hard time for our family,” she shares. “When the pool opened, I hosted my dearest girlfriends to thank them for their incredible love and support. We raised a glass to my father’s remarkable legacy and the impact he had on our lives.” In his honor, the family planted a butterfly tree as a living tribute to the love they shared with him.

Beyond memorials, the pool has reshaped everyday life. Hosting friends and neighbors has become second nature, and their children now invite buddies over all summer long. “Seeing our kids make memories right here at home absolutely warms our hearts,” she says. “It encourages us to slow down and spend more quality time together.”

What was once a plain backyard is now the heart of the household—a place to celebrate, reflect, and connect. “Building a pool brought so much more than a beautiful addition to our home,” she reflects. “It’s given us a space to create lasting memories. We feel very blessed to share the love of this space with friends and family. Cheers to Chez Gilly Pool!”

For anyone considering a custom pool, she offers one final piece of advice: “If you’re looking for a company that is professional, passionate, and committed to quality, I highly recommend NVBLU.”

Sisters that Sell Real Estate

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT REALTOR: QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE SELLING

“What’s my home really worth in today’s market?”

Michelle: Sellers often start by asking, “What’s my home worth?” Online estimates can be misleading, so a professional CMA (Comparative Market Analysis) based on current and recent sales, upgrades, and neighborhood trends gives a true picture.

Deborah: In Willowsford, small details like lot type, builders, section, outdoor spaces, or finishes can shift value dramatically. Make sure the agent’s pricing is based on facts, not just a high number to win your business. Ask about the agent’s past listings and their average sale-to-list ratio to ensure realistic, data-driven guidance.

“What should I do before listing to get the highest price?”

Deborah: Sellers often think big renovations are the secret, but most of the time it’s the small touches that create the biggest impact like fresh paint, new lighting, or decluttering.

Michelle: Right. We guide clients on what to skip and where to invest for the best return. Sometimes all it takes is the right staging and thoughtful touches to make buyers fall in love the moment they walk in.

“What’s your marketing plan for my home?”

Michelle: This question separates good agents from great ones. You want to know exactly how your property will be showcased from professional photography and video tours to social media and targeted buyer outreach.

Deborah: Our marketing is never one-size-fits-all. Every home gets its own strategy. Lifestyle storytelling, staging, and digital exposure that reaches both local buyers and out-of-state families drawn to Loudoun County.

“How will communication work during the process?”

Deborah: Selling your home should never feel like a mystery. You deserve clear updates, honest feedback, and quick answers. Michelle: We stay in touch at every step from showings to offers to settlement. When sellers feel informed, they feel confident and confidence leads to smoother transactions.

“What are your commission rates and what’s included?”

Michelle: This is an important one. Full-service representation means more than just putting your home on the MLS. It includes marketing, negotiation, professional coordination, and protecting your best interests from start to finish.

Deborah: Transparency builds trust. Sellers should always know exactly what they’re getting and with us, there are no surprises.

“What makes your team different?”

Deborah: That’s our favorite question. Michelle: It’s where we get to share our heart for this business. We can showcase our deep local knowledge, our dedication to design and presentation, and the way we work seamlessly together for our clients. Deborah: Selling a home isn’t just a transaction, it’s a transition. And when you have the right team by your side, it feels empowering, not overwhelming.

Dayloom: Illuminating Your Home with Local Expertise

The transformative power of outdoor lighting and the value of community-rooted design

EVERY HOME TELLS A STORY, and the right outdoor lighting transforms that story from dusk into nightfall—inviting warmth, safety, and a sense of welcome with every gentle glow. Thoughtfully designed landscape lighting not only highlights architectural features and extends living spaces into the evening but also creates an atmosphere that soothes, inspires, and connects. It’s not just about seeing your home; it’s about feeling it—feeling the comfort of a well-lit pathway, the serenity of a softly illuminated garden, and the pride in a residence that stands out, yet harmonizes with its surroundings.

Choosing a company with deep local roots makes all the difference in achieving that perfect balance. In a community like Willowsford, where natural beauty and intentional design

go hand in hand, a locally owned design-build team like Dayloom brings invaluable expertise and personal investment. Dayloom owner, Patrick Harders, says the company is more than just a service provider, but also a neighbor embedded in the heart of the neighborhood, familiar with its character, and committed to upholding its unique standards, including dark sky protections and community guidelines.

“We work closely with those standards to ensure every design is both beautiful and responsible—no glare, no light spill, just intentional artistry that respects neighbors and nature,” he explains. “It’s about being good neighbors and using our expertise to make the entire community better.”

Patrick’s journey into architectural and landscape lighting began in 1998 while finishing college and searching for a job. “It wasn’t long before I realized this wasn’t just work—it was art,” he shares. “Lighting has a unique power to transform space and emotion. Done right, it calms the mind, invites people to feel safe, and turns ordinary spaces into sanctuaries. That impact is what hooked me, and over 25 years later, it’s still what drives me.”

Over the past two decades, the Dayloom team has crafted stunning landscape lighting across Northern Virginia, Washington DC, and Maryland. Beyond designing unique outdoor lighting for homes and businesses, Patrick has developed and manufactured his own line of high-quality fixtures, with the

manufacturing plant in Danville, Virginia. Clients benefit from top-tier architectural and garden lighting systems, combining art and lasting quality

“Our work has been recognized with national and international design awards, but what sets us apart is deeper than accolades,” says Patrick. “We didn’t just stop at design; we built our own manufacturing facility in Danville, Virginia, because the luminaires on the market weren’t up to our standards. Now, we control the entire process— from concept to component—and it means we deliver systems that look better, last longer, and outperform anything else out there.”

Working with a lighting design company that knows what it’s doing and manufactures its own product, can make all the difference. Patrick says there are many mistakes made by other companies. “Over-lighting is a big one. Many designers flood scenes with brightness, but real artistry comes from restraint—knowing how to use darkness and contrast to guide the eye. Another common issue is the misuse of color-changing lights. It has a place, sure—but sparingly. Otherwise, it distracts from the natural beauty of the home and landscape. And most designers forget one key thing: your client experiences the lighting from inside the house too. We always consider the view from the windows because that’s where homeowners live. If you ignore that, you’re missing half the design.”

Dayloom will make the design and install process easy. “It starts with listening. Our design team meets with clients and translates ideas into fullscale renderings and detailed drawings. From there, it’s all about communication and planning—two things that separate great projects from good ones,” says Patrick. “Locally, we provide all design concepts, renderings, and final layouts at no charge. We believe the design process should feel collaborative and transparent. When it’s done right on the front end, the installation flows smoothly and the final result speaks for itself.”

With a legacy of artistry and craftsmanship, Dayloom understands that every project is an opportunity to enhance not just individual homes, but the collective spirit of the community. Their approach is built on collaboration, transparency, and a genuine passion for making Willowsford an even better place to live, one elegant light at a time.

LIFELONG LEARNING FOR LIFELONG SMILES

A Willowsford neighbor’s journey to dental mastery

“Be curious, be humble, and never stop investing in yourself. Excellence is not a destination; it’s a daily commitment. Trust that every bit of effort you put in now will pay off in ways you can’t yet imagine.”

IN WILLOWSFORD, neighbors are often known for their passions, such as gardening, hiking, cooking, or quilting.

For Dr. Kanumilli, her passion is something that touches every smile in her care: a love of lifelong learning.

She’s not just a resident—she’s also a proud sponsor of Stroll Willowsford, as the owner of Aldie Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, where she and her team care for patients of all ages, focusing on comfort, compassion, and comprehensive dental health. And she’s not just a dentist. She recently joined an elite group of fewer than 2% of general dentists in the U.S. and Canada by earning the title of Master of the Academy of General Dentistry (MAGD).

That means over 1,100 hours of advanced education, much of it hands-on. It means tackling a rigorous exam on par with board certification. Most importantly, it means staying on the cutting edge of dentistry, so her patients, including many of her neighbors, receive the very best care.

But Dr. Kanumilli doesn’t talk about Mastership like it’s a trophy. Instead, she describes it as a way of life.

“From early on in my dental career, I recognized that dentistry is an everevolving field—one that demands a commitment to lifelong learning in order to provide the highest level of care to patients. I was inspired to pursue the AGD Mastership because it represents the pinnacle of clinical excellence and

comprehensive knowledge across all disciplines of general dentistry,” she shares. That mindset shift began about five years into her practice, when each advanced course unlocked a new level of confidence. “Every course added a new layer of knowledge or a skill that I could immediately bring back to the practice. That direct application was incredibly fulfilling,” she recalls.

“Some courses pushed me far outside my comfort zone,” she laughs. “It was intense, but it taught me that growth always happens at the edge of challenge. That experience reinforced the mindset I’ve carried forward ever since.” Mastership has changed how she sees each person in her chair. “Instead of just focusing on one issue, I think holistically. The depth and breadth of the education I’ve received have helped me become more proactive in diagnosis, more precise in treatment, and more confident in navigating complex cases. More importantly, it’s deepened my commitment to ethical, evidence-based care that’s tailored to each patient’s long-term well-being.”

Of course, such an achievement was not hers alone. “Balancing the demands of Mastership with family life definitely took intentional planning. My family has been my greatest support system… we made sure to carve out quality time, whether it was short getaways, family dinners without screens, or weekend hikes to reconnect,” she says. Even

now, she carries forward the lesson she wishes she could tell her younger self: “Be curious, be humble, and never stop investing in yourself. Excellence is not a destination; it’s a daily commitment. Trust that every bit of effort you put in now will pay off in ways you can’t yet imagine.” For her Willowsford neighbors, MAGD isn’t just letters—it’s reassurance. Every hour of mastery comes back to one simple goal: helping families smile with confidence.

20 Years of Community, Diversity and Lifelong Learning at Montessori of Chantilly - Casa dei Bambini

TWO DECADES AGO, Montessori of Chantilly – Casa dei Bambini opened its doors with a simple but powerful mission: nurture the whole child. A trusted Stroll Willowsford sponsor since 2017, the school celebrated its 20th anniversary this fall at the UdvarHazy Air and Space Museum, bringing together current families, alumni, staff, and community members. Surrounded by thousands of aviation and space artifacts, including the iconic Space Shuttle Discovery, attendees reminisced, reconnected, and honored the school’s enduring legacy.

For founder and director Deepa Simlot, the milestone carries deep personal meaning. “This milestone is deeply personal to me. We began as a small Montessori school with a simple

yet powerful mission: to nurture the whole child. Over the past 20 years, we’ve had the privilege of shaping the lives of nearly 1,200 students—and in many ways, they’ve shaped us too,” she reflected. “Personally, I’ve learned so much from our students, families, and staff. Every interaction has been a lesson in empathy, resilience, and community. This celebration is not just a marker of time—it’s a reflection of the shared journey, the growth, and the love that has defined our school.”

The anniversary drew an impressive turnout, including some of the first students and teachers who helped launch the school in 2005. Simlot described the reunion with emotion: “Seeing teachers and students who helped launch the school back in 2005

was incredibly moving. It felt like no time had passed at all; the connection was instant, as if we’d just seen each other yesterday.” She added, “This school has been my extended family for the past 20 years, and reconnecting with those who helped build it felt like a joyful family reunion.”

For many Willowsford families, the event offered a chance to reflect on what the school has meant to their children and community. Resident Richa Patel shared, “The highlight for me was seeing generations of students, teachers, and families come together— it truly felt like a second home for my children. Watching them reconnect with their former teachers and proudly share memories was so heartwarming.” She added, “Montessori of Chantilly has had a lasting impact on our family by nurturing our children’s love of learning and giving them the confidence to be independent thinkers.”

Another Willowsford parent and fellow Stroll Willowsford sponsor, Lynn Alexander, echoed that sense of connection. “As a relatively new family to MCDBC, it was truly amazing to witness the lasting impact the organization has had on so many families over the years—evident in the incredible turnout of alumni,” she said. “In just one year, our daughter has truly thrived within the MCDBC community. She loves school so much that she asks every evening if she gets to go the next day—even on weekends!”

For Zoe Jimenez, the joy was in watching her children reconnect. “The highlight was watching my kids light up as they reconnected with their teachers. The hugs, smiles, and the genuine pride on both sides showed just how lasting these bonds really are,” she shared. The slideshow was especially meaningful to her family: “Watching my kids on stage learning, presenting, and celebrating cultures from around the world reminded me of how much they’ve grown through those experiences.”

Julie Hall, whose son attended MCDBC while her husband was deployed overseas, recalled how the school stepped in as family. “When my son was 3, his dad deployed to Afghanistan and it was our first year

at the school. Katie, in the office, took a picture of my son every month while my husband was gone. When he returned, she presented us with a Welcome Home poster with all the sweet pictures. We still have it today.” At the anniversary, she reconnected with the staff who had supported her years ago. “It was so wonderful to hug his Primary teacher and catch up on all that has happened in his life since she was his teacher,” Hall said.

Moments like these underscore the heart of MCDBC’s longevity. As Simlot described, “Watching alumni come back as confident, grounded adults was a powerful reminder of what Montessori education is all about: nurturing compassionate, capable individuals who go on to shape a better world.”

Looking ahead, Simlot sees endless potential. “Every year at our Kindergarten graduation, I share a dream that still fills me with hope: I imagine one of our students, years from now, setting foot on Mars and saying, ‘I owe it all to Montessori of Chantilly.’ That dream captures the essence of what I hope for the next 20 years—limitless possibilities.”

From an office park space in 2005 to a beautiful stand-alone building and thriving community of alumni, teachers and families today, Montessori of Chantilly- Casa dei Bambini has remained true to its roots: Community, Diversity and Lifelong Learning. Twenty years strong, the school continues to inspire the next generation to think boldly, act compassionately and dream fearlessly.
