“Oh,
VAN MORRISON
Hello, Willowsford Community Residents,
October has a rhythm all its own. The mornings feel a little crisper, the evenings a little cozier, and routines are in full swing with school, sports, and neighborhood events. It’s the season of Friday night lights, Sunday Commanders football (whether you’re tailgating, cheering from the stadium, or cozy on the couch), pumpkin patches, and autumn evenings — a month that brings both energy and reflection as the leaves begin to change and the year edges toward its close.
In this issue, I’m especially excited for Around the Neighborhood: Back to School — a collage that has become one of the favorite features of the year. It’s always fun to see the excitement of a new school year captured in these photos. And just like every issue of Stroll Willowsford, you’ll also find a variety of articles and features — all from and about your fellow Willowsford neighbors — designed to enlighten, entertain, educate, or simply bring a smile to your face.
A heartfelt thank-you to our Preferred Partners for making this publication possible. These trusted local businesses aren’t just advertising — they’re investing in our community. And to our readers: thank you for welcoming Stroll Willowsford into your homes each month. Your engagement is what makes it personal, purposeful, and truly connected.
Here’s to an October filled with fall fun, community spirit, and plenty of moments worth celebrating — both in our homes and around Willowsford.
Best, Traci

FALL HAS OFFICIALLY ARRIVED —and it’s my favorite time of year in the community. The air is usually crisp enough for a sweater, leaves crunch underfoot, and there’s a sense of warmth and connection that makes the neighborhood special. One of the highlights of the season is our signature event, AutumnFest. If you haven’t experienced it yet, you’re in for a treat—literally. The caramel apples are a community legend and they taste just as amazing as they look.
While we enjoy the season, fall is also an important time for the Association as we finalize the annual budget. We’ve been working on it since August, beginning with essential operating costs—services we must provide, such as landscaping, insurance, and reserve contributions for future repairs. From there, we consider discretionary items, such as enhancements or new ideas suggested by residents. Vendor contracts are reviewed and re-bid as needed to ensure we receive the best combination of service and value. Staff also inspects common areas to identify repairs, replacements, and improvements.
The remaining HOA Board Meetings for the year are scheduled for October 16th and November 12th at 5:30 PM at Sycamore House. Every Board Meeting includes a Resident Open Forum, where you can speak directly with the Board to share feedback. The 2026 Draft Budget is expected to be on both the October and November agendas, with adoption planned for November. Attending is a great opportunity to learn more about the budget process and HOA operations.
I hope you enjoy all the beauty this season has to offer, and I look forward to seeing you at AutumnFest!

from this year’s First Friday Concert we want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who came out and made each event so great. From April through October, the community showed up month after month to enjoy live music, seasonal flavors, and the kind of shared energy that makes Willowsford so unique.
Each First Friday brought something new—from talented local bands and musicians to handcrafted seasonal cocktails created by Willowsford Kitchen’s very own Chef Emily. Whether you were sipping on a refreshing spring spritz in April or cozying up with a spiced autumn blend in October, we hope you found a new favorite each time. And let’s not forget the amazing local breweries that kept our tap flowing with fresh, flavorful beer all season long!
Your support, your smiles, and your energy are what make this series so special. We loved seeing families, friends, and neighbors come together to kick off each month with music,
We’re already planning ahead for next year, and we’d love your help! If you have suggestions for bands you’d like to hear, seasonal cocktail ideas, local breweries to feature, or any other feedback, please let us know. This series is all about community, and your input helps us make it better
So once again—thank you for dancing, singing, sipping, and celebrating with us. We can’t wait to do it all again next season. Stay tuned, stay connected, and we’ll see you next year!

FALL IS A SPECIAL TIME at Willowsford Farm, and we’re excited to invite you to one of our favorite seasonal traditions: the Harvest Market, returning on Saturday, October 25, from 9 AM to 1 PM at the Willowsford Farm Stand! Willowsford Farm launched the Harvest Market in 2023 to celebrate our vibrant community and highlight the incredible talents of our Farm Partners, local makers, and small businesses. What began with 20 vendors has nearly doubled in size—last year we welcomed close to 40 vendors and over 800 visitors to the Farm Stand for a morning filled with fresh food, handmade goods, and community connections.
This year, we’re building on that momentum and are tremendously excited to host the Harvest Market for its third year! The Harvest Market is a celebration of everything we
believe in here at the Farm: healthy living, sustainability, and the power of community. As you explore the market, you’ll meet dozens of skilled artisans and creative small business owners –many of which are your neighbors right here in Willowsford.
To make the day even more festive, we’re thrilled to have live music from local favorite Lenny Burridge and Wagon Ride Farm Tours around Willowsford Farm. Whether you’re stopping by to pick up a few things, looking for a fun weekend outing, or just wanting to soak in the sights, sounds, and tastes of the season, you’ll be sure to find it at Harvest Market!
When: Saturday, October 25th from 9 AM -1 PM
Where: Willowsford Farm Stand located at 23595 Founders Drive, Ashburn, VA

Some stories begin with fireworks, but Sean and Eboni Brown’s started with barbecue smoke drifting into a St. Louis summer sky. Introduced at a friend’s backyard cookout, they stayed in touch, began dating, and eventually built a life that carried them to Northern Virginia.
Helping people grow, achieve their goals, and realize their best selves—that’s the part of my job I love most.”
Eboni’s path is both inspiring and adventurous. With an MBA from the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business, she began her career as a pharmaceutical chemist before shifting to solve complex challenges in industries far beyond the lab. Her passion for improving human life for generations to come shines through in her work and public speaking engagements. Most recently, she was a featured speaker for the Metropolitan Washington Mensa, a chapter of Mensa International. And if that weren’t adventurous enough, Eboni has also served as an analog astronaut in Hawaii, conducting research to advance life both on Earth and beyond.
Sean’s journey reflects a different kind of exploration— one into technology and human potential. A graduate of Eastern Illinois University and Harris-Stowe State University, he has always worked in technology, primarily in engineering roles. Today, he thrives as a technology systems manager at a global law firm. “I’ve always loved the tech side,” he shares, “but stepping into leadership opened something unexpected. Helping people grow, achieve their goals, and realize their best selves—that’s the part of my job I love most.”
Once you join, how will you spend your day here?
Spend your days at Chantilly National - fill them with golf, events, and more!
There’s no season too warm or too cold for friends to play outside.”
Together, Sean and Eboni are raising their daughter, Skylar, who is “nine years young” and full of curiosity. A bright and gentle soul, she enjoys golf, building Lego sets, sketching, and unwinding with a good movie and snack. One of her favorite things about Willowsford is that “there’s no season too warm or too cold for friends to play outside.” Since moving to the Grove in 2021, she has embraced cultural celebrations, neighborhood events, and friendships that feel more like siblings.
The family wouldn’t be complete without Diesel, their spirited Yorkshire terrier who never misses a chance to make a new friend.
Exploration continues to shape the Browns’ story. Whether they’re discovering local trails or traveling abroad, they cherish the chance to pause, reconnect, and create shared memories. Italy may have captured their hearts this year, but Iceland will forever hold a special place in their family’s journey—a reminder of the wonder, beauty, and joy they find in discovering the world together.
So if you happen to see Sean, Eboni, Skylar, and Diesel around Willowsford, don’t hesitate to say hello. Chances are, they’ll be the first to welcome you into the adventure.
MANY PEOPLE HAVE PETS in Willowsford, but today I am writing about a dog that lives on my street named Macs. He lives with the McCarty family: John, Sarah, Hailey, Olivia, and Brooks. I’ve gotten to know him from the day we moved to Grove.
Macs is a Labrador and he is six years old. He is a playful dog, very loving and calm. Macs loves hose water, and he will sprint to the driveway as soon as anybody says “bath time!” He absolutely loves cucumbers and will appear anytime if the cutting board is out of the cabinet. Fun fact: Macs is always on the sidelines during the kids’ baseball and softball games, cheering the kids at their practices like the unofficial mascot. He also loves stealing toilet paper and clothing tags, anything cardboard. Macs has a lot of energy and loves playing ball, and will catch it really well if anyone throws one.
Macs is a great addition to our neighborhood. All the kids on our street love to interact with him! Tell us all about YOUR pet! Email billie.rose@strollmag.com.
As The Hill School, founded in 1926, marks its centennial year, we celebrate not just the passage of time but the philosophy that has shaped the school over 100 years. Located in the town of Middleburg and just a short drive from Willowsford, Hill has spent the last century refining its mission: to provide an education which builds character, self confidence, and scholarship through academic and co-curricular excellence, individualized attention, and a strong sense of community.
Founded as a small schoolhouse on a modest half acre, Hill School today is composed of eight buildings on 170 acres—a campus developed over generations to reflect and support the school’s core values. The school serves students in Junior Kindergarten through Eighth Grade, and while the campus is beautiful, it is the unique culture and program which distinguish the school.
This centennial year also marks the successful completion of the school’s Centennial Campaign, which raised more than $17 million over three years to help ensure that Hill continues to thrive through its second century. These funds are dedicated not for buildings or
monuments, but for children and teachers. This includes supporting and expanding the school’s faculty housing program and increasing dedicated funding for its needbased financial aid program. The Campaign also strengthens Hill’s Endowment (currently valued at over $20 million), ensuring the long-term sustainability of its mission.
These investments support what has always made Hill distinctive: a strong sense of community among the faculty, staff, students, and parents while they are at Hill
and often well past their time at the school.
Hill School’s goal is to meet each child where they are and help them grow in both intellect and character. Small instructional groups, a program of “total education,” and an engaging curriculum give students opportunities to explore, learn, and grow. Whether they are studying literature, performing a play, working in the Dornin Science Center, or studying in the school’s woods, Hill students engage deeply with their subjects and with one another.
Visitors to Middleburg often come for the town’s shops, restaurants, and quaint charm. But we encourage Willowsford families to take a short detour and visit the Hill School campus. Even a brief walk through its grounds reveals how deliberately the landscape supports learning. Outdoor classrooms, gardens, and stone paths invite reflection and foster curiosity. A oneand-a-half-mile walking trail welcomes members of the community to enjoy a quiet stroll through the woods and meadows, offering a glimpse of the setting where children grow and thrive.
Hill’s history is long and meaningful, but it is the future that we are investing in; one in which children are known and respected, where they have the freedom and the encouragement to make choices and to learn from their mistakes, and where the school and the parents partner and have high expectations of themselves and the children.
Hill’s history is long and meaningful, but it is the future that we are investing in
We hope you will visit, take a walk, and experience for yourself how one hundred years of purpose have shaped a place that continues to put children first.

Michelle: Fall buyers are usually more motivated. They want to get settled before the holidays or before winter weather sets in.
Deborah: Which means when they see a home they love, they act quickly. They don’t have months to browse like spring shoppers. Timing is everything. Fall buyers know what they want and they’re ready to move.
Michelle: And fall buyers are very lifestyle-driven. They picture cozy evenings by the fireplace, hosting a Thanksgiving dinner in the dining room, or gathering with family for the holidays.
Deborah: That emotional side of fall shopping makes it easier for a home to stand out if it feels warm and inviting. Buyers aren’t just evaluating square footage; they’re imagining living there this season.
Michelle: One other difference we often see fewer buyers in fall, but the ones who are out there are serious. They usually have their financing lined up and are ready to go.
Deborah: So, if you’re selling, you may get fewer showings, but the showings you do get are higher quality. These buyers are focused, intentional, and often act fast when they find the right home.
Michelle: Now, let’s talk about how to really appeal to these buyers. Start with curb appeal: tidy up the yard, rake leaves, and add seasonal touches like mums or pumpkins by the front door.
Welcome to our regular sponsored Q&A column with Michelle Perl Stanko and Deborah Perl Davis. Deborah: Inside, think cozy. Warm lighting, a soft throw on the sofa, maybe oil diffusers scent with autumn scents like cedarwood, clove, or nutmeg. It doesn’t need to be overdone. It just needs to feel inviting and comfortable.
Michelle: Highlight features buyers want in fall. A fireplace, a kitchen ready for holiday cooking, or even a mudroom for boots and coats.
Deborah: The goal is to help buyers picture themselves living there this season, not just walking through empty rooms. Make them feel like this could be their home right now.
Michelle: So, while spring brings the crowds, fall brings the commitment and a sense of urgency that can work in your favor.
Deborah: And if your home feels cozy and inviting, fall buyers will connect emotionally and that’s often what makes them act fast.

Have you ever been stumped on planning a party and needed a few tips? Well, have I got a guide for you. Here are a few tips and tricks I learned from helping plan my friend’s younger sister’s party.
Creating balloon arches is simpler than you think—there are simple methods to achieve them!
Many people choose to order extravagant balloon arches from professional companies, often paying exorbitant prices, or invest heavily in high-end supplies to create them. However, we discovered a more budget-friendly and creative approach: using balloon garlands attached to a simpler backboard. While most backboards are typically made of hardwood, we opted for styrofoam, which was both lightweight and cost-effective. In the end, we managed to complete the entire balloon arch project for under $100, proving that you don’t need to break the bank to achieve stunning decorations!
When planning activities for younger kids, don’t consider gender.
When we were planning this party, we thought that we had to do different things for boys and girls. However, a simple tip we discovered is that both girls and boys usually like the same things as long as it’s not too girly or boyish. This is because most of the party guests are 6 to 7 yrs. At this age, everyone often likes the same things as they’re too young to have any preference. This tip usually works for kids under 9 years old or 1 to 2 years older.
You don’t need to pay for an outside venue, your backyard works!
Another essential tip we discovered is that hosting a party in your backyard can be both practical and enjoyable. We transformed our outdoor space into a festive environment, utilizing string lights, colorful decorations, and comfortable seating to create an inviting atmosphere that the kids thoroughly enjoyed. This approach not only saved us money
but also simplified logistics; we didn’t have to deal with transportation issues or strict scheduling. Incorporating your outdoor space into your party planning can prove to be a costeffective and convenient solution.
To make your party planning super easy, try preparing some tasty snacks a day or two ahead of time—this way, you’ll have everything ready to enjoy when your guests arrive! One of the best ideas I discovered when organizing was to prepare snacks in advance. Making easy treats a couple of days before helps reduce the stress on the big day! This preparation allowed us to concentrate on setting up decorations and ensuring everything was in place, rather than scrambling to prepare food at the last minute. When planning your event, I highly recommend finding a few straightforward recipes that can be prepared ahead of time—your future self will appreciate the extra peace of mind!
Make a whole checklist of everything you’re doing. Another great tip I picked up was to create a comprehensive checklist of everything you need to do. Trust me, with so many details to juggle—from invitations to snacks and activities—it’s easy to feel overwhelmed! Writing down each task not only helps you stay organized but also gives
you that satisfying feeling of checking things off as you go. Additionally, having a visual reminder of what still needs to be done helps keep stress at bay.
By following these tips, you’ll find that planning a party can be a fun and rewarding experience rather than a stressful chore. Embrace your creativity and make use of your available resources. With some good organization and a little planning, you can create an unforgettable celebration that everyone will love. So gather your supplies, put on your party hat, and get ready for an amazing event! Happy planning!
How one Willowsford family found their dream spaces—again and again
When Susan and Bradley Long moved to Willowsford, they didn’t just bring their belongings—they brought along a trusted partner in design, Joy Ferrara of Home Joy Designs. The relationship began years ago, when the Longs were in a “love it or list it” situation with their Belmont Country Club home. After interviewing five designers, Joy stood out for her warmth, adaptability, and ability to blend beautiful design with family-friendly functionality.
“She listened, adapted, and understood how we wanted to live,” Susan recalls. “As parents, we loved how she designed for now and for how our needs would evolve.”
Over the years, Joy has worked her magic on several of the Longs’ homes across two states—including one designed entirely from scratch after they sold a fully furnished home. Whether it’s remodeling expertise or her knack for managing every detail, Joy has consistently delivered spaces that are both stunning and livable.
Her creativity often surprises the Longs. At their house at Lake Norman in North Carolina, she suggested painting an entire bonus room—including the ceiling—in a deep matte color, transforming the once-cold space into a cozy retreat worthy of a magazine spread. In another home, she turned a small builder-grade kitchen island into a striking quartz showpiece—nearly double in size—without replacing the cabinetry.
Now in Willowsford, Joy has once again tailored a home to fit the Longs’ lifestyle, making each space warm, personal, and functional for family life. She’s as attentive to details as she is to big-picture design—like surprising their daughters with new backpacks on the first day of school.
For the busy couple, Joy’s project management skills have been invaluable. “She’s a bulldog with contractors, but always sweet about it,” Susan says with a laugh. “She took care of everything, so we could enjoy the process without stress.”
The results speak for themselves. Friends and neighbors can’t help but react with “wow” when they visit, admiring the way each room feels both elegant and welcoming. “It’s always magazine-worthy,” Susan says, “but most importantly, it’s livable.”
For the Longs, Joy has become more than a designer—she’s a friend. And here in Willowsford, her work continues to bring exactly what her name promises: joy.

Loudoun United’s Her Nite to Unite honored women in sports, spotlighted local nonprofits, and reminded us how community thrives on and off the field.
BY RESIDENT
ON SATURDAY, JULY 19, Loudoun United FC hosted Her Nite to Unite at Segra Field in Leesburg, bringing the community together for an evening of soccer and celebration. Loudoun played with heart against the Oakland Roots, though the match ended in a 0–2 loss. The real win of the night was off the field, in the causes supported and voices heard.
The stadium buzzed with energy as families filled the stands and cheered from start to finish. Outside, local businesses, food trucks, local wineries and breweries, and the always-popular King of Pops gourmet popsicles gave fans plenty to enjoy—whether they were there for a cold drink, a sweet treat, or just the community spirit.
As a Willowsford resident and intern with Stroll Willowsford and BeLocal Loudoun County, I experienced the evening by helping run the BeLocal booth. BeLocal is a sister publication to Stroll—a trusted new-mover guide that also keeps residents and visitors connected through its print and digital editions and its social media, highlighting happenings across Loudoun. Meeting families, sharing what BeLocal offers, and seeing the excitement over our raffle—featuring more than $3,000 in prizes from local sponsors—was an incredible experience. It showed me how local businesses and neighbors come together, perfectly reflecting the night’s theme of unity and community.
them—mothers, wives, and mentors— reminding fans that soccer is about gratitude, respect, and representation. That spirit carried into the night as fans supported nonprofits including BRAWS (Bringing Resources to Aid Women’s Shelters), Women Giving Back (WGB), the Junior Women’s Club of Loudoun (JWCL), and Girls on the Run of NOVA. Families also met an inspiring group of women who race Porsche cars, adding another unique layer of empowerment.
visibility and leadership for the next generation of women in sports. Even with some early rain, families turned out to support the players, the nonprofits, and the powerful women being honored. For me, it was special to attend and be part of a night that celebrated both community and women’s impact in such a meaningful way.

One of Willowsford’s greatest amenities is the cooking classes offered by Chef Emily Worth! On June 7th, my dad, Pete, and our neighbor, Paloma Boynton, owner of Paloma Blanca Ceramics, took the Grilling & Chilling class held at the Sycamore House. They are both interested in grilling, so they thought they’d give it a try. When they came back, they both said they had a great time. They made grilled peaches with prosciutto, basil, and balsamic reduction; summer panzanella; grilled strip steak with a chimichurri butter; and grilled pineapple.
Ms. Paloma said “I liked meeting new neighbors. The best part was definitely getting to eat everything! It was delicious. Chef Emily was really great at answering questions and giving us tips and tricks. The chimichurri
butter was so good! It was my first time going to a Willowsford cooking class, and I would definitely do it again. I can’t wait to see what other classes they come up with.”
My dad said, “ Chef Emily was very accommodating to every skill level. I haven’t ever taken a class before…It was great to meet some more neighbors with similar interests and look forward to connecting with them outside of the class (shout out to Marcelo!). Even though I consider myself a grill master, I still learned a few tips and tricks. I will definitely be taking a class again.”
If you want to give it a try, you can keep an eye out in the Willowsford Weekly or go to Willowsfordlife.com to see what classes are coming up!

The Willowsford Conservancy Team hosted a butterfly walk in July led by Anne Ellis, a Butterfly Count Coordinator for the Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy. This year, I was able to join in the walk! Everyone who participated in the butterfly walk went on a walking path near the Farm Stand called Farm Loop Trail, where there was a lot of wildgrowing food/plants for the butterflies native to Virginia. Ms. Anne Ellis showed
us a few different types of butterflies (a Cabbage White, a Red-Spotted Purple, and a Fritillary Butterfly) along with the plants they eat, called host plants. I learned that the Cabbage White Butterfly is not native to Virginia; it actually came all the way from Asia! The plant it lays its eggs, White Clover, is also not native to North America.
While we were walking down the path, I found two Monarch Butterfly

eggs, and one looked ready to hatch soon! Everyone got their cameras out to take pictures as we walked into a beautiful field, full of flowers and butterfly host plants. Have you been to a Purcellville Canons game? It is a short drive to get to the stadium from our neighborhood. The stadium was nice and very affordable for the whole family to see the game. I thought this was my chance to see the game live! But the rain had other plans: the game was cancelled! Then, something amazing happened: I got to interview the head coach, Coach Fuller!
During the interview with the coach, I noted that despite the game being rained out, he was prepared to remain for a couple more hours. What he told me blew my mind; Coach Fuller had to stay at the stadium to videotape the rain. Since the league receives funds from the MLB, the coach needed to prove the weather had cancelled the game.
The Valley Baseball League is a proving ground for college players wanting to play in the MLB. To play a full schedule, the team needs a lot of support from sponsors, the community, and volunteers to keep the team together. Volunteers and the community help by feeding the team, serving concessions, and working at the ticket booth. In addition, some members of the community are host families if some of the baseball players need a place to live. Students can help by being interns. This means that they come to Purcellville and work with the Canons. Not only does it help the Canons, but the interns get college credit.
While interviewing the coach, I asked what the hardest part about owning a team was, and he responded, “Releasing a player is the hardest part.” Not only is this hard in any sport,
but because in this league, it means their baseball-playing hopes may be over. The coach has a difficult time doing this because it means he has to say to the player, “you don’t have what we’re looking for.” It sounds so tough. After my interview with Coach Fuller my dad and I headed to downtown Purcellville, and decided to have dinner at The Local Cut, a nice burger restaurant with delicious burgers. The servers were so nice, and the food was good. When we finished our dinner, we went to Grutos soft serve ice cream. It was delicious with so many flavors, toppings, and cones!
Even though I didn’t get to see the game, I felt so welcomed by the head coach and friendly staff. I can’t wait to come back later this season. Hope to see you all there!

One thing to note for prospective clients is that sustainable construction is cost-saving, as Joel shares. “We’ve found that once clients understand the comfort, health, and long-term savings ZERH offers, they become strong advocates.”
Golden Rule Builders is a strong advocate for what the National Association of Home Builders calls Aging-in-Place, states Joel. “We prefer using a different term, “Universal Design,” to describe the philosophy of safety, comfort, and sustainability at home. The principal notion is that feeling safe and comfortable in your home has little to do with your age. Admittedly, many of our clients who benefit from Universal Design features are either aging or are concerned about a parent who is aging.” This work was featured in Stroll Willowsford in August issue Living Spaces.
These design concepts cater to people of all ages, children and adults, he further explains. “Our certification was earned by attending a 3-day course and seminar learning how to design and modify homes to meet the needs of our client, no matter their age. It’s something we are truly proud to offer our clients.”
As Golden Rule Builders continues to grow, their commitment to excellence remains unwavering. They are constantly innovating and expanding their services to meet the evolving needs of their clients. With a foundation built on trust, quality, and personalized service, Golden Rule Builders is poised to continue building dreams for years to come.
“Connecting with Willowsford residents in Stroll is a great fit for us because this community values what we value—great design, solid craftsmanship, and a thoughtful approach to how homes are built. This past April, my dad & his sister took my grandma to New Orleans to celebrate her 75th birthday. Everyone was traveling from different cities and met there, it was a special trip for my dad, his girlfriend, my aunt & uncle and my grandma.
New Orleans is a clean, comfortable and fun city for traveling. My Grandma said, “All throughout New Orleans you could hear music.” There was a French Quarter Festival, which is a free festival of live music for everyone with 21 different stages on the streets, on little stages, and even in small corners! And there were all types of music playing including jazz, funk, Dixieland, rock, and even country.
Although New Orleans is typically very hot and humid, because they went in early April the weather was perfect, which was good for the large amount of walking around. Some essentials for packing were comfortable shoes and clothes as there was a lot of walking all around the city.
The first thing my Grandma wanted to do to celebrate her birthday was try out the famous Beignets from a popular café called Café du Monde. Afterward, they did a lot of activities, going on trolleys, going on tours of old plantation houses, and going to a sculpture garden! They ate at so many delicious restaurants, trying all types of food like French food, creole, and seafood!
They all did many things during their travels, but it was also a vacation filled with time together as a family, which was a perfect gift for my grandma’s birthday. If you’re looking for a unique way to celebrate a milestone birthday or special occasion, a trip to New Orleans could be a fun and memorable option for Willowsford families seeking adventure and great food!

I THINK ALL OF US secretly desire to be a great guitar player, so I wanted to write about my guitar teacher, A.R. Banks. He teaches guitar, bass, and ukulele at different skill levels. As a professional musician, he plays for two bands: Staff Infection, in which he plays bass, and Pixie Jones, in which he plays guitar. In addition to playing professionally, he also offers services such as lessons, and if you do take lessons, he can help you repair or tune your instruments.
A.R. taught me and my brother how to play guitar from scratch. We started two years ago when we were 8 and 10, and have loved our weekly guitar sessions ever since. From reading music to strumming, A.R. teaches it all! I think this was a great age to start, because we were beginning to learn to read music in school, and A.R. did a great job helping us with that skill.
Two years later, my brother and I can download sheet music and learn new songs on our own. Along with his teaching, my Mom likes that A.R. comes to our house when we have lessons, it’s very convenient for working parents.
A.R.’s business is called BANX Industries. He opened it just after COVID and has been teaching music almost full-time since then, for the last four years. Although he has been teaching in total for more than four years, before he started his own business, he used to work at a Loudoun County music school. A.R. started playing guitar in his teen years. He says he can teach any age, from a beginner to an experienced level. A.R. can play and teach many different styles of music, such as jazz, country, and rock. After two years of lessons, I’ve figured out that rock is his favorite.

A tip he has for beginners is that the more time you spend with the guitar in your hands, the better you will be! The only secret to getting better at music is to practice, practice, practice.
If you’re interested in a great guitar teacher who will give lessons in your home, here are a few answers to questions you may have. Students do not need to know how to read music going into lessons; A.R. teaches that
as part of the standard curriculum. A.R.’s schedule changes quite often due to kids’ sports starting and stopping, so if he doesn’t have any openings when you reach out, he might have some shortly after. You can contact him on Facebook (BANX Industries) or by email (banxindustries@gmail. com). I think A.R. is truly a great music teacher; he is kind and patient with us! If you are looking for a music teacher to help you get started on a guitar or to sharpen your skills, A.R. comes highly recommended by our family!

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always loved nature: the morning sun shining through the large canopy of trees, as my hiking boots crunched along the trail; the birds chirping their harmonious tunes, as if an automatic alarm is going off; how the creek shines from the afternoon sun so magnificently. So this year, I decided to participate in the Willowsford Natural Leaders Camp. The camp is organized by Natural Leaders with the Willowsford Conservancy. The week was filled with lots of adventures, learning opportunities, and, of course, fun! And how cool that it was right here at Cedar Pond Pavilion!
We learned many life skills that could aid you if you’re ever deserted in the wilderness. Even my younger sister, who had butterflies in her stomach at the start of the camp, made new friends, and thoroughly enjoyed it! Here are some of the things we engaged in throughout the week: At the beginning of every day, we would gather at the archery range, and play naturethemed games. Then, no matter the circumstances, we would go to the creek. Even though the towering trees protected us from heat, it would usually be blazing outside, so cooling off in the pleasant creek felt incredible. One of the major wilderness skills we learned was how to make a fire. Fires are a crucial factor if you’re stranded outdoors. You have to make your fire big enough to keep you toasty and warm, but you can’t make it too big, otherwise it will start a forest fire. We learned to manage our fires and keep them in our control. We also learned how to make fires safely with matches, flint, and steel.
Another skill we mastered was building shelters out of sticks and leaves. Our camp instructors taught us the different varieties of shelters, and then we started our construction. After the time was up, everyone had a water test for their
shelter. In case of heavy rain, naturally made shelters need to withstand the powerful winds and vigorous rain. We also made clay pottery out of natural clay that we found on the creek riverbank. We sculpted our clay, then let our creations dry. One of my favorite things about this camp was carving spatulas and spoons! We found blocks of wood, then carved them into different kitchen tools.
Another entertaining activity we did was fishing! We gathered worms for our bait and made fishing poles out of sticks. We tied strings that had hooks attached to them to our sticks and then found quality places to fish. On one of the last days, we hiked to an immensely large field that had two fire pits. We roasted random items from our lunches such as apples, cheese sticks, bananas, and more. On the last day of camp, we made a large fire to roast our lunch. Most people brought sausages and burger patties, so we could roast it on the fire. Of course, we made ooey gooey, mouthwatering s’mores! We also played an enjoyable game, where one of our counselors was a “wounded deer”, and we would try to catch her. For her “blood”, she used flour, so we could track her. We camouflaged ourselves by putting mud all over our bodies, then to catch her, we had to throw tied-up bandanas at her as our ammo. The chase was exhilarating, and eventually we found her.
Natural Leaders was such a fun camp, and I hope I get to go back next year! Whether you’re a nature lover by heart or a first-timer in the woods, Natural Leaders teaches you how to be independent in the wild.
