Sisters that Sell

Is Willowsford

Still a

in 2025? Real Estate

Strong

Market

Deborah: Let’s start with the big picture. The Willowsford market has remained strong through 2025. From January through July of this year, we saw 47 homes sold, compared to 44 during the same period in 2024.

Michelle: Exactly and what’s really impressive is that homes sold for about 100.7% of their list price this year. That’s nearly identical to last year’s 101%, showing that sellers are still getting very close or even above asking.

Deborah: Days on market have stayed consistent, too. This year it’s averaging 17 days, just one day faster than 2024.

Record-Breaking Sales

Michelle: And Deborah, we’ve had some record-setting sales this year!

Deborah: Yes! We saw two homes sell for $3 million and above over the past year. The highest price ever achieved in Willowsford closed on July 31, 2025, at $3,175,250 for 23022 Lavender Valley Court. That’s a new benchmark for the community.

Price Ranges

Michelle: In terms of pricing, homes in 2024 sold between $1.1 million and $2.869 million, whereas this year we’ve seen sales from $1.04 million to $3.176 million. The average list price moved slightly from $1,724,663 down to $1,617,048, which reflects some pricing adjustments but still strong overall.

Neighborhood Breakdown

Deborah: Let’s break it down by section.

The Grant

Welcome to our regular sponsored Q&A column with Michelle Perl Stanko and Deborah Perl Davis. As experienced Realtors, we bring valuable insights into market trends and topics specifically relevant to Willowsford, where Michelle Stanko and her family reside. Have questions? Send them to Michelle@thepearlteam.com for future columns. Enjoy!

Michelle: The Grant had 10 homes sold this year, priced between $1.21 million and $3.175 million. The median sales price was $1.425 million, and homes sold at 100.2% of list price in about 14.5 days.

The Greens

Deborah: The Greens saw 14 homes sold, with prices from $1.225 million to $2.399 million. The median was $1.412 million, and these homes sold 103% of list price in just 5 days.

The Grove

Michelle: Over in the Grove, 13 homes sold this year, ranging from $1.175 million to $2.03 million. The median price was $1.399 million, selling at 99% of list and also averaging just 5 days on market.

The Grange

Deborah: And finally, The Grange had 10 homes sold, priced between $1.225 million and $2.025 million, with a median of $1.717 million. They sold at 100% of list and averaged 5 days on market.

Closing Thoughts

Michelle: So overall, Willowsford is holding very strong. Homes are selling quickly, close to or above asking, and we’ve even seen historic highs this year. Deborah: Exactly. If you’re a seller, it’s still an excellent time to list, and if you’re a buyer, there are great options in the greater Northern Virginia market. Michelle: That’s where we come in to help you navigate, negotiate, and uncover hidden gems, including off-market homes. Call me at 703-568-7868 today, and let’s talk about how we can find the right move for you.

Shifting Gears

“Let’s do what we love, and do a lot of it.”
—Marc Jacobs

Hello, Willowsford Community Residents,

There’s something about September that shifts our mindset. Maybe it’s the return of routine, the earlier sunsets, or the way a season that once felt endless now seems to have flown by. We squeeze in one more evening on the patio, one more round of backyard games, and start thinking about everything we want to finish strong before the year wraps up.

We begin with Labor Day — a well-earned pause that honors the work ethic woven into our everyday lives. It’s a reminder of the dedication, perseverance, and passion behind the scenes of every business, household, and community event. And as always, we pause to remember September 11th — a moment of reflection on courage, sacrifice, and the incredible strength of showing up for one another.

Inside this issue, you’ll find stories that ground us in the present while inspiring what’s next. A heartfelt thank-you to our Stroll Willowsford Preferred Partners —your support makes this publication possible. When you’re looking for a product or service, we hope you’ll consider these trusted local businesses. They’re not just advertising—they’re investing in your community.

And to our readers: thank you for welcoming this magazine into your homes each month and for being the heart of what makes Stroll Willowsford so special. Your engagement, stories, and spirit turn these pages into something truly personal and purposeful.

Let’s make this September count — with intention, gratitude,

Hello Neighbors and Supporting Businesses!

The Willowsford Board of Directors are excited to provide an update on Stroll Willowsford as we move into the Fall and the return for the 2025-2026 school year!

HERE ARE SOME HIGHLIGHTS TO SHARE: Resident Advisory Committee: A big thank you for all the hard work going into the Resident Advisory Committee. There are seven Resident volunteers on the Committee, with representatives from each of our Villages, to assist in engagement and transparency within the community: Hetal Mithani (Chair), Jennifer Adcock (Secretary), Karen Armandi, Sharon Eisenberg, Jon Korringa, Rick Mastracchio, and Gary Sidor, with Seth Johnson as the Board Liaison. They and we look forward to hearing from all of you on what matters to you and the community.

With the Summer months behind us, pool season has officially closed for the season. We hope that everyone enjoyed the beautiful community amenities during the Summer. We also want to congratulate the North and South Willowsford Waves on another successful season! (See page 44.)

As always, we ask that you report any suspicious activity in the community. There is typically an upswing in suspicious activities during the Summer months. If you see something, report it. The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency number is 703-777-1021.

We will continue to have several fun Lifestyle programs upcoming during the Fall. Please read the Weekly and check our Willowsford Life Facebook and website calendars for upcoming events.

As always, please reach out to any of your resident Board or HOA team members with any ideas or concerns. We look forward to the wonderful Fall months ahead!

EATING IN SEASON

Summer to Fall

AS WE TRANSITION from Summer to Fall, you may be wondering what that means for seasonal eating. We’re all familiar with the abundant summer produce of tomatoes, eggplants, peppers and zucchinis, but what about autumn? It can’t just be pumpkins and butternut squash, right? Eating in Season is all about choice, specifically the choice to buy and consume produce that is aligned with the growing season for your region. That choice comes with a variety of benefits, including higher nutrient density, quality of produce, and incredibly fresh flavor. It may seem like a difficult task: what produce is in season? Where do you buy seasonal produce? How do you cook when limited to seasonal ingredients? We promise it’s easier than you think!

In Loudoun County, you can figure out what’s in season by visiting the Willowsford Farm Stands or one of the many Farmer’s Markets. A visit this time of year will have you find the last of the summer tomatoes and eggplants while you may see other items like peppers until late October. Fall boasts a wide variety of produce, from those delicious “winter” squashes to fresh greens. Here at Willowsford Farm, we find that the transition from Summer to Fall is easy with the last of the summer produce providing complimentary flavors to the incoming heartier fare. Greens like

kale, chard and our braising mix are a great base for fall soups. You can even prepare dense salads with roasted sweet potatoes, apples and beets! The best part of the Summer to Fall transition is the huge selection of produce available. It feels like the sky’s the limit when it comes to combinations of different farm-fresh flavors!

Fall is also the best time of year for fresh carrots! Willowsford Farm is known for our delicious frost-kissed carrots. These carrots are harvested in late October after their fluffy green tops have seen the first frost of the season. This sends signals to the plant to prepare for winter and triggers a chemical reaction in the root to maintain energy reserves for the colder season. This gives our carrots their rich, sweet taste - perfect for eating raw as a snack or roasted with a dash of honey for a healthy side dish. Broccoli is also back in season by then, along with spinach for the perfect nutritional boost to your diet. Fresh varieties of apples from our partners at Beechwood Orchard bring the perfect touch to classic autumn baked goods and we’ll still have plenty of herbs to enrich the flavor of your meals. Shopping with your local Farm will feel like a treasure hunt, with classic seasonal favorites and new things to try popping up as we work our way through the Fall months.

Of What Value Is A Conservancy?

IT’S ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL DAY here in Willowsford! The Willowsford Conservancy is an enormous undertaking (2,300 acres, almost 3 times Central Park in NYC!) managed by a small, talented staff of 13 employees and hundreds of volunteers including 7 volunteer trustees. Within our boundary are many miles of maintained natural trails, wetlands, 8 ponds, 38 bridges and boardwalks, 2 camp grounds, 2 open-air pavilions for picnicking, forests, pastures, grasslands, a fascinating array of wildlife, and a thriving Farm with a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program and two farm stands that last year produced 125,000 pounds of certified organic produce and 77,100 eggs. People constantly tell me they bought their home in Willowsford because of the open, green, forested spaces, the trails, the Farm and CSA program (one of only two in Virginia). While the world-class pools and club houses make Willowsford a premier community, it is the Conservancy that sets us apart from the rest.

Of what value is all that to a Willowsford resident? While the land itself provides privacy and beautiful green space

that raise property values, its benefits extend far beyond the financial returns. It has value in the physical and mental health benefits it provides, ecological value in the air and water it cleans, and intrinsic value in the diversity it holds and protects. The entirety of the property of the Conservancy is owned in Trust, in perpetuity and therefore must be maintained, conserved and preserved as a natural resource. This means the benefits of this land, in all its forms, and the Conservancy’s protection in perpetuity will exist far longer than any of us.

The Conservancy and Farm resources make our community unique. It’s that inherent value that greatly influences and enhances the property values of each residential home here. So, of what value is the Conservancy to each resident? That’s easy to answer: Priceless. Incomparable. Protected. It’s Undeniable. And it’s home.

Fall in Love with Native Plants

When most people think of planting season, they picture fresh spring mornings and the first bursts of green. But for native plant enthusiasts and savvy gardeners, fall is where the real magic begins. Planting in fall provides just about everything your plant needs to successfully establish and gives you a great headstart for a beautiful garden when spring arrives.

STRONGER ROOTS, LESS WORK

In the fall, plants shift their focus from growing leaves and flowers to building strong root systems. Those roots act as the plant’s anchor, helping it draw nutrients, store moisture, and stay stable through winter. For gardeners, this means fewer chores. Fall plantings

usually need only light watering and minimal weeding. Cooler temperatures and more consistent rainfall take care of the rest.

TIMING IS EVERYTHING

There is a sweet spot for fall planting. Aim to get plants in the ground between now and the end of October. This gives the roots enough time to establish before the first hard frost. Willowsford Conservancy makes it easy to plant native. Shop our Nursery’s native plant selection online for convenient pickup, or stop by an upcoming Native Plant Sale at the

BULLDOG ON THE BLOCK

Meet Cisco, the joy of the Pitkewitz family! I asked Gavin Pitkewitz a few questions about the furriest addition to his family. Cisco is an English Bulldog, a great-sized sized cute little puppy! Cisco is only seven and a half months old, but is a bundle of energy! He enjoys playing with his toy nutcracker, alligator, and any type of bones or balls. When Cisco is not playing with his toys, he loves eating mulch, going on family walks, meeting and playing with his dog friends, Bell and Mia! It takes time to teach Cisco new tricks, but it only took him one to two days to learn “treat”. Cisco is a little nervous around new environments, but then he gets used to them. Cisco always gets excited and happy when he meets new people! So if you see Cisco strolling down your street, make sure you say hi, and you will be very lucky to meet him!

Honoring Lindsey Ritchie

IN EVERY NEIGHBORHOOD, there’s someone whose quiet impact leaves a lasting impression. For my neighborhood in the Greens, that person is my neighbor, Lindsey Ritchie. Wife to Bob Ritchie, and mother to Bri (12), Landon (10), and Gracelynn (7), one may think managing the schedules within her home would be enough! But Lindsey is a champion for our community as well.

Lindsey Ritchie is a dedicated teacher and beloved local DYS basketball coach and board member. Whether she is stepping into the classroom to guide students through their day or coaching young athletes on the court with passion and purpose, her presence is a steady force of encouragement and discipline. Known for her calm demeanor, strong work ethic, and deep care for the community’s youth, Coach Lindsey exemplifies what it means to lead by example, both in sneakers, and school shoes. Check out our interview here:

How long have you lived in the neighborhood?

We moved into the Grove in 2017, then moved to the Greens in 2021.

What brought you here?

The neighborhood amenities and sense of community.

How long have you been a part of the DYS organization?

I have coached with DYS since 2021 and have been on the Board since then, as well. I have served as the Girls Developmental Coordinator (Grades 1-3), Girls House Coordinator (Grades 4-5), and Head of Rules and Officials. I have coached girls in grades 3, 4, and 5, and assisted a team of girls in grades 1 and 2. I also had two seasons as a Head Coach, finishing as Regular Season Champs!

What do you enjoy the most about coaching or working with kids?

Seeing the moment in a student or player when something “clicks” and feeling accomplished.

What’s your proudest coaching moment?

I am most proud when I see players find their confidence! When I coach, I make sure all players know the saying “you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” Many players I’ve worked with look to pass before they look to shoot. I think there is an instinct sometimes to not take the shot, but I want all of my players to feel confident to take it and create other offensive opportunities from there.

Why is volunteering with DYS important to you?

My goal is to bring more youth players to the game of basketball, and specifically, build and grow the girls’ program! Basketball brought me so many amazing opportunities, memories, and friends in my life and helped me grow into the person I am today. I want more girls to have that same experience!

How would you compare teaching and coaching?

Teaching and coaching basketball both require patience, planning, and a love for what you’re doing! I absolutely love working with kids and helping them work hard and reach their goals. Helping kids learn a new concept, work together and have success is truly a gift.

Lindsey’s teaching career started directly out of college (Virginia Tech) with Teach for America. It is a non-profit organization that recruits and trains recent college graduates and professionals to teach in low-income communities across the United States. She was placed at Anacostia Senior High School in Washington, D.C. Public Schools as a Physics and Biology teacher.

She taught there for 3 years before moving to Loudoun County, where she helped to open John Champe High School in 2012 as an inaugural staff member as a Biology teacher and Science Department Chair.

Last year, Lindsey worked as a long-term substitute at Willard Middle in the Spectrum Classroom (Gifted Program), and this year she finished a long-term position in the Special Education department.

You might be wondering what’s next for this busy teacher, coach, mom, and wife? Well, Lindsey plans to head her youngest daughter’s 1st and 2nd grade team this upcoming winter, while still maintaining the Developmental Girls Coordinator and Head of Rules and Officials position with DYS. As far as teaching, she isn’t quite sure, but I have a feeling I will be seeing her in the halls of Willard real soon!

From Fasting to Feasting

Eid brings gifts, prayers, and biryani!

AS RAMADAN ENDS, EID COMES. We wait for a long time and fast for 30 days. Fasting is when you can not eat or drink from dawn to dusk. We fast so we can remember those who don’t have food. Fasting is not mandatory for minor kids, sick or old people, pregnant women or new mommies, and travelers. Then we celebrate Eid after Ramadan.

Eid follows the Islamic lunar calendar at the sighting of the new moon, which marks the beginning of the lunar month. So Eid shifts ten days back every year

due to the Islamic calendar being shorter than the Gregorian calendar.

We have two Eids, the first one that is one day after the last day of Ramadan, and the second one is two months and ten days after, because it is Hajj, a pilgrimage made to the Kaaba, the house of Allah, in the sacred city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia.

During the first Eid, we give each other gifts or money (we call it Eidi). And during the second Eid, we sacrifice a goat by slaughtering it and then donating most of the meat to poor

people, giving some to family and friends, and keeping a small share for ourselves (you can ask someone to do the sacrifice for you).

Eid isn’t just about gifts because you can also spend time with others, like family and friends. It’s a celebration. You can host a party and remember all the memories we made together and all the joyous activities we did. We play, eat, and socialize. You don’t have to be a Muslim to enjoy Eid parties; even nonMuslims are invited.

We also pray to worship our god, Allah. We go to a mosque to pray together.

During Eid we wear clothing called shalwar kameez. It is a traditional Pakistani dress that we wear. One of my favorite traditional dishes to eat is called biryani. Biryani is a dish made with rice, lots of spices, vegetables, and your choice of meat such as chicken, lamb, or beef.

We also have a traditional dessert called gulab jamun. Gulab jamun looks like meatballs, but they are sweet. Our feasts sure are delicious as we enjoy every moment of celebrating Eid with our family and friends, creating memories.

We also decorate our homes using small Eid-themed ornaments, decorations, string lights, and banners and Eid signs. You don’t have to decorate your house, though, if you don’t have time or you don’t have space, and it is causing you stress. But it is a tradition to do a deep cleaning of your house before Eid.

I enjoyed Eid a lot this year, and when it ended I remembered that Eid will always come back next year. This holiday is enjoyed and celebrated around the globe by all Muslims.

From the Grove to the Galápagos

Willowsford students take Spanish beyond the classroom.

This summer Sra. Heather Henderson, a Spanish I/II teacher at Willard Middle School, organized a trip to Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands. Sra. Henderson lives with her family in Willowsford. Here’s more from her!

What inspired you to organize a trip like this for your students?

I think that travel and exposure to the way of life and the culture of other people is an absolute gift. We can learn so much from how other people live. Many of our families have the opportunity to travel to far-flung destinations, and I hope that our young people know how fortunate they are. I have tried to organize trips to countries that students might not otherwise visit, countries like Panama and Ecuador. And it has been a priority of mine to help students discover both their privilege and their potential.

What were some of the most unforgettable moments from the Galápagos adventure?

We spent a couple of hours at Playa Mann, a beach that is home to a large number of sea lions. Watching our students play football in the water, only to be interrupted by playful sea lions, was a highlight for me. Also, on our first night on the islands, a group of our students started a pickup game of soccer with some local kids- several of whom played barefoot! A love for sports united kids across age groups, races, and countries of origin.

How did you see your students grow academically or personally during the trip?

a smile at how he navigated the conversation. I was also extremely proud of a couple students who were fairly shy and didn’t know anyone else on the trip, who worked hard to build relationships and come out of their shell a little bit.

Why is it important for students to learn Spanish through immersive travel?

The absolute best way to learn a language is to be immersed in it. And learning a second (or third or fourth) language is, in my opinion, virtually essential. When I travel with students, I provide safe, scaffolded opportunities to “force” students to speak a language that they have been studying in the classroom. There is simply no substitute for learning a language amongst native speakers of that language.

What brought you to Willowsford, and what makes it feel like home?

My family and I lived in Maryland from 2006-2019, and while I worked in Montgomery County, my husband commuted to Loudoun. Finally, in 2019, I changed jobs, and we moved to Virginia. We fell in love with all that Willowsford had to offerthe focus on agriculture and conservation, the large lots, the space for kids to play, the proximity to the suburbs, but the beauty of rural life. We moved here in the summer of 2019 and are so grateful that we did! We love our neighborhood and the community we have built here.

Are there any special Willowsford traditions or gatherings that you cherish?

We love the trails and are fortunate to live right next to one. We have also been fortunate to participate in the Big Give events sponsored and supported by Willowsford families.

Who or what first sparked your passion for travel and language?

Like many people, I started studying Spanish in high school. I quickly discovered that I had a knack for it and ultimately studied both Spanish and French. I grew up in a very homogenous community in the Midwest, and as a teenager, I was called upon several times to support immigrant families or those passing through my small town, as I was one of a very small group of people who could speak Spanish. I realized that my ability to communicate in a second language allowed me to have relationships with so many more people. What a gift! I didn’t leave the country until I was in college. My family didn’t have the means, and I grew up in a place where travel wasn’t common. My first trip out of the country was to Spain when I was in college, and to say I was bitten by the travel bug is an understatement!

What’s the next destination on your travel bucket list? I would like to lead a group of students on a service trip to somewhere in Latin America. Personally, my biggest bucket list item is to hike the Camino de Santiago in Spain. I will visit the UK for the first time this winter, visiting both England and Scotland.

As a student of Willard Middle School’s Spanish I course, I had no idea that choosing Spanish would lead to one of the most incredible experiences of my life. Thanks to our Sra. Henderson, and EF Tours, a group of us seventh and eighth graders found ourselves boarding a plane to Ecuador for a travel adventure we’ll never forget.

Our journey started in Quito—a city tucked high in the Andes Mountains with a mix of old-world charm and buzzing energy. We spent two nights exploring everything from stunning churches like the Basílica and Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús to something totally unique: standing on the Equator. One of the highlights for me was the Yumbos Chocolate Tasting—because who wouldn’t love learning through chocolate? We also got our first taste of the local markets and street vendors. The colors, the smells, the energy... all of it made it feel like we’d stepped into a different world in the best possible way.

Then we flew to the Galápagos Islands, which honestly felt like we had landed on another planet. On Santa Cruz Island, we met the famous Galápagos Giant Tortoises up close in their natural habitat. It was surreal. That night, after trying some of the best empanadas I’ve ever had, a few of us ended up in a spontaneous game of street soccer with local kids in a park—it didn’t matter that we didn’t all speak the same language; soccer did the talking. But even more meaningful was the way we used our Spanish in real conversations, whether it was ordering food, asking for directions, or just chatting with locals. It gave us a chance to put everything we’d learned in class into action.

Laila Henderson Heather Henderson

Our next stop was Isla Isabela, reached by a two-hour ferry ride (yes, there were some seasick moments). But it was totally worth it. We saw sea lions chilling like they owned the place, flamingos strutting near lagoons and even went snorkeling with sea turtles and sharks. Snorkeling in those crystal-clear waters was like swimming through a nature documentary. The sunsets and sunrises on the island were unreal—every moment felt like a screensaver come to life.

Toward the end of the trip, we made our way back to the mainland and visited Otavalo, a village known for its Indigenous markets and deep-rooted traditions. We met with local tribe leaders and had conversations that opened our eyes to cultures and perspectives we don’t always get to hear about

in school. We even got to see a gorgeous waterfall (and some alpacas, of course).

It’s hard to describe just how much this trip meant to all of us. It wasn’t just about checking places off a map; it was about experiencing new cultures, stepping out of our comfort zones, and finding a little more confidence in who we are. I came back from Ecuador with a deeper appreciation for the world, a stronger connection to my classmates, and a ton of memories I’ll carry with me forever.

Bloō Dental

Patient-centered care that redefines your dental experience

AND INTERIOR PHOTOGRAPHY

From the moment a dental patient walks through the doors at Bloō Dental located in Brambleton Town Center, they’ll immediately feel at ease. “We want patients to feel relaxed and valued,” shares Dr. Haress Rahim. Bloō Dental accomplishes this by offering a modern, clean office design, as well as having an office team that’s friendly and compassionate. To reduce anxiety, they offer a soothing environment and cutting-edge treatments that are efficient and minimally invasive. Clear communication to make the patient feel heard and understood is also routine. “It’s about creating a partnership in oral health, where patients feel comfortable asking questions and confident in the care they receive,” Dr. Rahim further explains.

“We carefully evaluate new technologies to ensure they offer real benefits to our patients, improving comfort, precision, and outcomes. From digital X-rays to 3D imaging, we ensure that these innovations are seamlessly integrated into the care we provide, enhancing both the patient experience and clinical results.”

Dental patients can anticipate a comprehensive, patientcentered approach that goes beyond basic dental care. “Our state-of-the-art technology, combined with our commitment to education and prevention, ensures that our patients receive the most advanced care possible.” The office stays up to date with the latest technology and non-evasive treatments and delivers care with the highest level of professionalism. “Our modern technologically advanced approach ensures topquality results, while our commitment to patient comfort and communication fosters long-term relationships based on trust.”

At Bloō Dental, continuous learning and staying at the forefront of dental advancements are top priorities. The team regularly attends training and continuing education courses to remain updated on the latest techniques and tools in the industry.

This office mentality has produced a number of success stories. One patient’s story, in particular, stands out to Dr. Rahim. A patient came to the office after being told elsewhere that extensive tooth extractions were their only option. “The patient was understandably anxious and wanted to explore alternatives. After a thorough examination and consultation, we developed a less invasive treatment plan that focused on saving as many natural teeth as possible through a combination of periodontal therapy and restorative treatments. The patient not only kept most of their teeth but also saw a dramatic improvement in their oral health.”

In addition to delivering rewarding experiences inside the walls of Bloō Dental, the office also gives back to the community. Bloō Dental actively participates in local events, sponsors community programs, and offers free dental care days for those in need. The office also works closely with local schools and organizations to promote oral health education, especially for children. “This engagement not only helps us connect with our neighbors but also builds trust and strengthens our bond with the community. It’s gratifying to see how these efforts have made a positive impact—whether it’s through providing care to underserved populations or

simply making our neighbors feel like they’re part of the Bloō Dental family.”

Dr. Rahim is a Willowsford neighbor and is happy to be a part of the Stroll community. “It’s a wonderful feeling to know that I live in Willowsford, and I see so many families as patients of mine. Stroll is such a nice publication because it allows us to stay connected with the community that we live in and find out about so many activities.”

If you’re looking to find a dental practice where you feel cared for both as a patient and as a person, Bloō Dental is exactly the perfect blend.

Bases Loaded, Bucket Emptied

Who knew a ballpark blooper could lead to literary glory? Willowsford resident Brendan Heavey turned a messy moment into a laugh-outloud poem that became a finalist in Loudoun County Public Library’s annual poetry contest!

PUKE IN THE POPCORN BUCKET

I’ve always loved baseball games, and I don’t mean to get all sappy, My Dad used to bring me as a kid and it always made me happy.

So last July late I pulled my kids off their screens, I bribed them to get in the car with cookies and jelly beans. Our little family rolled up to the ballpark, the sun still high, Kids buzzing around like bees from their sugar high.

I forked over five bucks for more snack and drinks,

“Worth it!” I lied to myself, my wallet on the brink. Hot dogs in hand, nachos stacked high with cheese, Our seats had a view with a hint of summer breeze.

Then came the crack of the bat – play had begun, And my oldest son Jack whispered, “Dad...I don’t feel fun.”

Strike one! the ump cried, the crowd gave a cheer, My kid started to turn green – it was clear chaos was near. With one eye on the game and one on my eldest boy,

“The popcorn!” I thought: the bucket I could deploy!

A fly ball soared towards the stadium’s lights, As Jack hurled in the popcorn bucket with all of his might. Double to center! The crowd’s on their feet!

A splash hit my shoes – it was chunky, not sweet. The mascot danced, a t-shirt cannon popped, The retching continued, it never quite stopped.

A steal of third! He’s safe by a toe!

Napkins came flying at us from three rows below. I kept one eye on the field, the other on the growing mess, A mom nearby launched a Wet Wipe in obvious distress.

Two outs, bottom fifth, runners on base!

A man two rows over gagged loudly and fled the whole place.

Vomit cascaded like Niagara Falls, While I clapped along with the stadium calls.

Home run! A three-run blast! This game is tight!

“Is that kid okay?” asked a fan next to us in fright.

Jack was muted but proud of his puke-filled pail,

“That’s my boy,” I said, “He’s tough as a nail.”

The janitor passed and gave me a glare, But nothing could ruin that night’s grassy air.

We lost by ten, but the memory stuck –

Of popcorn and puke and unshakable luck.

So here’s my advice if your planning a trip: Bring extra Wet Wipes, napkins, towels... But the nachos – you should skip.

What’s made your family giggle lately? Share with us! Email billie.rose@strollmag.com.

The Ballad of the Bucket

A Willowsford dad turns disaster into verse!

IT WAS A PICTURE-PERFECT SUMMER evening in July 2024, and I had grand plans for our family outing to a Delmarva Shorebirds baseball game. As any well-meaning parent might, I overcompensated at the concession stand—hot dogs, cotton candy, ice cream, pretzels, and one absurdly large bucket of popcorn. The kids were darting around the ballpark like it was their own personal playground. And shoveling down everything I handed them.

By the time we took our seats just before first pitch, the sun was setting, the crowd was lively, and everything seemed to be going perfectly. That’s when my son turned to me with the telltale look every parent dreads.

“Dad,” he said weakly, “I don’t feel good.”

I acted on instinct. I dumped out the remaining popcorn and handed him the bucket—just in time for him to deliver a scene no one in Section 110 will ever forget. He hurled with the force of a freight train. Fans scattered. A few brave souls leapt over rows to escape. Someone yelled, “Incoming!” It was complete and total pandemonium.

To her everlasting credit, one heroic mom I didn’t even know ran to our rescue with paper towels and wet wipes, while I tried to contain the collateral damage and comfort my poor son. It was messy. It was loud. And it was—once the chaos died down—kind of hilarious.

Even some of the Down East Wood Ducks ballplayers turned around in the dugout to see what was going on.

Jack also recovered quickly - about 15 minutes later he was back into the game and saying he was hungry.

That unforgettable moment turned into a poem I wrote shortly after, titled Puke in the Popcorn Bucket. It ended up as a finalist in the Loudoun County Public Library’s annual poetry contest, and my son’s first-grade classmates couldn’t get enough of it. Their laughter—and their insistence that it should be a book—inspired me to pursue publication. I’m now working to turn our ballpark disaster into a children’s book, and I’m looking for an illustrator and the right publishing partner to bring it to life.

It turns out that baseball, snacks, and a little disaster can make for a surprisingly heartwarming story. Sometimes, the most unexpected moments are the ones we remember— and laugh about—for years to come.

Character, Curiosity, and Curtain Calls

A Salutatorian’s Wakefield journey, center stage.

RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER HAYDEN FAULKNER, THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY HILLYARD AUTOMOTIVE

Character, curiosity, and a clear voice. The three C’s of Wakefield School’s mission statement, and three traits I believe I gained at the school after graduating as one of Wakefield’s Class of 2025 Salutatorians. Wakefield School is an independent, college preparatory school, located in The Plains, Virginia, that educates students from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 12 with a rigorous liberal arts curriculum. With a total student population of approximately 400 students and an average class size of 15:1, Wakefield’s smaller and more personal community was incredibly enticing to my family as I was preparing to enter high school, having just come out of the COVID-19 pandemic. Having spent four years attending the school, I can now report that the opportunities granted to me by being part of a smaller school, and specifically the Wakefield community, grew my self-confidence exponentially and gave me the push I needed to become an involved and recognized member of the school and my community.

While academics clearly vary between school divisions, the guiding philosophy guiding Wakefield education remains the same: the space for self-discovery and a connection to community, a drive to take risks and explore passions and interests, and a foundation of academic inquiry that is supported and encouraged by faculty,

staff, and students alike; character, curiosity, and clear voices. During my time at Wakefield, I was able to explore a variety of courses and electives that both expanded upon foundational learnings and allowed for discovery in narrower fields of interest. For me, my interest in psychology, which I intend to study in college, was piqued by reading assignments in my sophomore year, and then continuously explored during my remaining two years in high school. However, I believe the academic

"Our family knows the high cost of repairing and maintaining your vehicle. My experience gained at a major auto dealership I know to exceed the expectation of each customer that comes through the door, whether for the first time or for a return visit. Let us care for you and your car. "

program that truly challenged my academic development was Wakefield’s English program, which allowed me to write both a Junior and Senior thesis paper, two year-long projects that prepared me for college-level writing, and allowed me to explore in-depth academic analysis that I eventually won awards for. The challenge that came from Wakefield academics always felt engaging and worthwhile, truly something that was worth every penny to me and my family.

Despite the importance of academics, they aren’t the only important aspect of a school, especially for a high schooler. In many ways, extracurriculars are worth just as much if not more to the educational experience. While approximately 85-90% of students participate in Wakefield athletics, a program rife with conference and occasionally even state championships, I chose to dedicate my afternoons to Wakefield’s theater program, which has grown tremendously in recent years. Over the course of four years, I performed in seven productions and was a member of the technical theater crew for two lower and middle school performances. Having starred as Queen Aggravin in Once Upon a Mattress and Ursula in The Little Mermaid, as well as a variety of ensemble and supporting character parts, I believe I spent over 1,000 hours in the Wakefield theater. Not only did Wakefield’s theater program give me

a place to grow my confidence, but it gave me a community in the school that didn’t just exist within the Upper School, but in all divisions. Throughout the school year, I could hone my skills in the Upper School fall play, being supported by middle school tech crew, support lower and middle school actors during the winter, doing their hair pre-show and giving encouragement in the wings, and then becoming a leading figure in our culminating spring musical, sharing pre-show rituals with upper and middle school actors alike before putting on the performance of our lives.

Even outside of the big extracurricular programs, smaller clubs and communities became major parts of my life as well. I was a member of our Community Council, helping to organize events and giving feedback in discussions about dress code or school policies. I was a member of our Model U.N. team, one of the biggest clubs on campus. I was able to attend two major

conferences, giving my best attempts to be brave and discuss complicated issues in front of dozens, if not hundreds, of people. And most importantly, I was a member of the Equine Service Club, where I volunteered at Middleburg Humane Foundation year-round, helping care for the horses and other livestock on the property. Just as I spent hundreds of hours in the theater, I have spent hundreds of hours at the shelter, making a difference to the animals there, and maybe even to the larger world. I will be sad to leave these things behind, because many of them have shaped me into the person I am today, and many of them I hope to continue in some capacity. However, I will always be grateful to have attended Wakefield. To have grown not just intellectually, but personally.

Correcting More Than Just Posture

Inside Advanced

Corrective Chiropractic’s transformative approach

GOING ON 21 YEARS in Loudoun County, Advanced Corrective Chiropractic is not your typical “back-cracking” clinic.

Led by Dr. Chad Parsons, this forwardthinking practice is reshaping the way people view chiropractic care, especially those who are skeptical or unsure of what it really offers.

For Dr. Chad, chiropractic care isn’t just about momentary relief. It is about long-term correction and getting to the root of the problem.

“We want our patients to understand why they’re in pain—not just adjust them and send them on their way,” he explains. “Once you understand the ‘why,’ it opens the door to real healing.”

SCIENCE OVER SYMPTOMS

Dr. Chad is one of the few chiropractors in the region Advanced Certified in Chiropractic BioPhysics® (CBP)—a specialized, research-based approach that focuses on long-term spinal correction, not just symptom relief. This method combines precise digital

imaging, posture analysis, and targeted traction techniques to help realign the spine over time.

“We don’t guess. We test,” he adds. “And we customize each care plan based on what your body actually needs.”

For those unfamiliar: the data-driven, results-focused process of Chiropractic BioPhysics makes all the difference.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF CHIROPRACTIC EXPERIENCE

From the moment you walk through the doors of Advanced Corrective

“We believe in giving back to the community that trusts us with their health.”

Chiropractic, it’s clear this isn’t a onesize-fits-all operation. The office blends a warm, welcoming atmosphere with state-of-the-art tools, like Robotic MLS Laser technology, Robo-trac and decompression therapy, that enhance both comfort and results. Patients rave about the friendly staff, clear communication, and professional environment. Each visit feels personal, precise, and purposeful. “People often say they feel like they’ve finally found a place that listens—that’s huge in healthcare,” says Dr. Chad.

TREATING A RANGE OF REAL-LIFE ISSUES

The clinic sees a wide variety of patients from kids, pregnant women to athletes and business professionals, while treating everything from sciatica, scoliosis to migraines, car accident injuries, and even infant colic.

Results speak volumes. Many patients report significant pain reduction, improved mobility, and better posture, even after years of living with chronic discomfort.

Dr. Chad emphasizes that true correction takes time and commitment, but the result is long-lasting health, not just temporary fixes.

STAYING AHEAD OF THE CURVE

Part of what keeps this practice so effective is its commitment to growth and innovation. Dr. Chad and his team regularly attend industry trainings, staying current with the latest research and technology in spinal health.

One of their favorite advancements?

The MLS Laser; a cutting edge tool that reduces inflammation and promotes tissue healing at the cellular level. “It’s amazing to see how quickly people respond to some of these newer

therapies when they’re paired with chiropractic correction,” says Dr. Chad.

MORE THAN CHIROPRACTIC—A MISSION TO GIVE BACK

But what truly sets Advanced Corrective Chiropractic apart isn’t just the care, it’s the heart behind it.

The team is deeply involved in community initiatives, from hosting an annual holiday open house to support local nonprofits such as Mobile Hope and Toys for Tots, to sponsoring local athletic teams, first responders, and military members. The office has done countless collections for local food pantries, schools, women’s shelters, and other nonprofits in need.

“We believe in giving back to the community that trusts us with their health,” he says. “It’s part of who we are.”

Over the years Dr. Chad and Advanced Corrective Chiropractic have been awarded for ‘Loudoun 100’, ‘40 Under 40’ by Loudoun Times Mirror, Best of Loudoun, Best of Suburbia, Small Business of the Year Finalist for the Loudoun Chamber of Commerce and more! Him and his team’s efforts do not go unnoticed!

REWRITING THE CHIROPRACTIC NARRATIVE

Whether you’ve been frustrated with your pain, scared of chiropractic care, or you’ve never considered it at all, Dr. Chad encourages people to take a fresh look.

“You don’t have to live in pain,” he says. “With the right tools, the right team, and the right approach, real change is possible.”

At Advanced Corrective Chiropractic, that change is more than just physical; it’s a complete shift in how you understand your body, your health, and your potential.

Squid Pro Quo

Students experience ink-credible hands-on learning!

AT WILLARD MIDDLE SCHOOL, 7th graders had the option to participate in a squid dissection in science class at the end of the school year, funded by the PTA. A dissection involves cutting and separating the parts of an animal or plant to study its structure.

On dissection day, students placed all their items at the front of the classroom (away from the lab tables), grabbed the dissection instruction packet and goggles, and waited until the teacher told us to start. Goggles were mandatory but surprisingly gloves and aprons were optional! Each squid was on their own separate trays, along with a box full of pins, a probe, a ruler, and scissors.

During the dissection, students had to take out parts of the squid and cut it open though its mantle, which is where you can see most of its insides. Students even cut out the squid’s ink sac and had to smear some of the remaining ink onto the dissection packet!

After the assignment was done, students had to clean and dry everything off. Drying is an essential step otherwise it could cause problems for the next class who will be using the same tools. Most students thought the dissection was interesting (and stinky!) and were glad they opted to do it!

The Three Gems of Lake Anna

Lake Anna is a popular getaway location for people in our area. When my parents were growing up, this was their favorite destination. This location is a very amazing spot that we go to as often as possible.

I want to share my 3 favorite places around the lake:

When my family and I want to get some ice cream while at the lake, we head down to The Boardwalk at Laka Anna. This area offers a variety of activities, including an arcade, restaurants, and more. We usually enjoy ice cream during the day and engage in activities such as mini-golf and dining at night. The Boardwalk offers a place to dock your boat or jet ski, but also has signs telling people that they need to be slow so that no boats don’t get scraped and scratched.

A fan favorite in my family is to do water sports beside the seawall dividing the public and private sides of the lake. This cove is frequently used by my family and the guests we bring along for activities such as tubing, kneeboarding, and wakeboarding. You can always find us blowing up the tube or pulling a board out of the ski locker and diving right back into the lake for another round of “King of the Tube,” which is just a game of “I push you off and I now rule the tube.” We also like to jump tubes while being towed, which is really fun...you just need two tubes and some guts!

Where is your favorite

or

in our community? Let us know at billie.rose@strollmag.com!

At lunchtime time we head down to a spot we call “Rocky Island” near the dam. We bring cheese and crackers and eat all afternoon. While my parents relax, the kids play, and even the dogs get to join in on the fun. The island serves as a racecourse where people can swim around it and compete to reach the opposite side first. When the adults are done cooling off, they join in on the fun, throwing around footballs and spraying each other with pool noodles.

Lake Anna is an amazing place filled with fun, family, and adventure. Whenever you step into the lake, you take one more dive into long-lasting memories!

We inspire our Eagles from preschool through 8th grade to become lifelong learners, to think critically and creatively, and to lead with courage, compassion, and character.

This summer, the Willowsford Lodge pool is being watched over by a familiar team - siblings Jackson (19), Logan (17), and Leah (15), who are working together as lifeguards. For the three of them, the pool has become more than just a summer job; it’s a home away from home.

Jackson, a student at JMU, is in his third year at the pool and second year serving as a manager. Logan, a rising senior at Lightridge High School, is in his second year as a lifeguard and also works part-time at a local golf course. Leah, the youngest, is a rising sophomore at Lightridge and is working her very first job this summer as a lifeguard. She especially enjoys the days she gets to work alongside one or both of her big brothers.

The siblings have grown up in Willowsford and now enjoy giving back to their community in a meaningful way. They’ve made close connections with fellow guards and love seeing familiar faces from the neighborhood each day.

Their parents couldn’t be prouder of them and are often spotted dropping off snacks or meals during long shifts. With one or more of their kids at the pool nearly every day, it has truly become a second home for the whole family.

These were perfectly seasoned and crispy, served alongside an assortment of dips. Another favorite was the strawberry-filled French Toast. This was very fluffy and had the perfect balance of sweetness. The bagel sandwiches were exquisite, seeing Ess-a-Bagel is a longstanding New York bagel staple, and Baker’s Crust has a special partnership with them to bring these authentic bagels to Virginia! Our group couldn’t decide which chicken dish was the best: the Chicken and Waffles, Swanky Benedict, or Biscuit Sandwich! The Pastrami Hash was really delicious, and deserves a recommendation, too!

At Willowford, where garden bounty and community spirit go hand in hand, this Italian classic deserves a home at every dinner table. The

The comfort of homemade Eggplant Parmesan

Willowsford Farm Stand offers eggplant, squash, peppers, and tomatoes! I was able to visit the Farm Stand and talk to Sarah Uhrig, Willowsford Program and Engagement Coordinator, about veggies available there. She said that the fall and summer months are some of the busiest all year, so make sure to visit the Farm Stand and stock up on local produce soon!

THE CLASSIC RECIPE, WILLOWSFORD-STYLE

• 1 cup Italian-style breadcrumbs

MEET THE TIRUMALASETTY FAMILY

A life of love, learning, and legacy

Sriharsha Tirumalasetty and Asha Davuluri, originally from South India, came to the United States with big dreams and a shared determination to build their futures. Sriharsha arrived in 2008 to pursue a career in Healthcare IT, and Asha arrived in 2009 to earn her master’s degree. Their marriage was arranged in the traditional way, and Asha fondly describes it as “a match made in heaven.” She recalls the moment they

met on October 5, 2011, surrounded by family. “The moment we saw each other in the presence of our parents, we just knew—this was it!” Just a few weeks later, they were married on October 22. “We’ve never looked back,” Asha says. “It’s been a beautiful journey. My husband’s smile is contagious. It makes me fall in love with him all over again.”

In a sweet twist of fate, Sriharsha and Asha later discovered they had attended the same school back in India,

though they never crossed paths until planning their wedding.

The couple has now lived in The Grove for four years, raising their 11-year-old son Vihaan, who will begin sixth grade at Willard Middle School this fall. Vihaan is a bright, fun-loving, and kind young man with a passion for learning and music. Passionate about all things science, he’s especially drawn to chemistry and physics, and he devours nonfiction books, Asha tells us.

Vihaan has already earned impressive accolades, including participating in the 43rd Loudoun County Regional Spelling Bee. Musically gifted as well, he has been studying cello for five years at the Catoctin School of Music in Leesburg, performing in recitals and as a member of the Loudoun Symphony Youth Orchestra, where he has received awards in multiple competitions.

As accomplished as he is, Vihaan’s parents say his most remarkable qualities are his generosity and empathy. “He’s always asking how our day went, if it was stressful, and how he can help,” Asha shares. “For an 11-year-old, he is incredibly humble and caring.”

At home, the family enjoys caring for their saltwater fish tank, home to two clownfish (Prince and Kissie), a Blue Damsel named Blueberry, and a Bicolor Blenny affectionately called Raspberry. They also have a betta fish named King.

“We capture every moment through pictures. At the end of the day, those are the memories we carry through generations.”

The family describes themselves as “a fun-loving, cozy, small family that is always there for each other.” Whether they’re singing silly songs, decorating the Christmas tree, shopping, or cooking together, they cherish time spent as a unit. “We capture every moment through pictures. At the end of the day, those are the memories we carry through generations,” Asha says.

Professionally, Sriharsha works as a Program Director in the Healthcare IT industry. Passionate about improving patient outcomes, he has remained committed to the field since the beginning of his career. Asha is a Cybersecurity Manager, overseeing the design and implementation of security frameworks that govern access to systems for users, devices, and applications.

The Tirumalasetty’s love to travel and explore new places, cuisines, and cultures. In addition to frequent visits to their hometown in India, they’ve traveled to Mexico, Jamaica, the Maldives, the UAE, Canada, and the Dominican Republic. Upcoming

adventures include Japan, Finland, and a tour of Europe. “Every year, we make it a priority to travel as a family. It gives us time to unplug from our hectic schedules and grow closer,” Asha says.

They are embracing a season of passion, growth, and purpose. GOURD-GEOUS GREETINGS

The Posh Porch brings festive front steps to life!

There’s something about a beautifully styled front porch that makes coming home - even just pulling into the driveway - feel a little more magical. That’s the idea behind The Posh Porch, a seasonal decorating business founded by Northern Virginia native Devon. With her roots in the area and family in Willowsford, Devon brings her passion for seasonal decor to the community, transforming front steps into festive showcases, one heirloom pumpkin at a time. Inspired by her childhood home where her mom went all-out for the holidaysespecially Halloween - Devon hopes the Posh Porch brings that same sense of seasonal joy to local families across the area. And one of her favorite neighborhoods to work in? Willowsford, of course.

Willowsford holds a special place in Devon’s heart—not only because of her love for the community, but because it’s where her uncle and other extended family live. “We’ve always decorated his porch,” she says with a smile. “The homes are stunning, and the residents really embrace the beauty of the season. It’s a fantastic place to bring porches—and fall—to life!”

“Posh Porch did an incredible job with our Halloween decorations! The porch looked amazing and was the talk of the neighborhood. It’s so nice not having to worry about buying pumpkins or dragging out decorations. Everything was done for us and looked perfect. We highly recommend them!” - said resident and Devon’s uncle, Bobby Riggs.”

The woman-owned business consists of Devon (CEO), her mom (COO), aunt (CFO), and even her rescue pup (CPO - Chief “Pumpkin” Officer). Devon & team run The Posh Porch as a family business. Their signature fall styling includes heirloom pumpkins, colorful gourds, mums, hay

bales, and curated accents - all delivered, set up, and (when the season’s over) packed back up if you so choose. Whether you’re after a cozy, classic look or an all-white pumpkin palette, there’s a package for every porch - and every personality.

Clients can choose from pre-designed packages or opt for custom styling based on their home’s colors, layout, or personal tastes. “We love working with homeowners to create something that fits their space perfectly,” she says.

“I’m excited to get my porch decorated by The Posh Porch this fall! I’m a busy mom and entrepreneur, so I love how they took one thing off my “to-do list” for me. I know the team personally, and they never miss. Their creativity and attention to detail always bring the season to life on my porch, which creates such a welcoming feeling— and I know this year is going to be their best yet,” said resident Tonya Morris.

And if you’re feeling inspired to try it yourself? Devon suggests keeping it simple: stick to a limited color palette, mix textures like pumpkins and mums, and play with different heights to add dimension. “A few thoughtful touches go a long way,” she says.

Whether DIY or professionally styled, fall porches in Willowsford are looking more festive than ever - thanks, in part, to The Posh Porch’s local love.
