HORISONT ØST HORIZON EAST Nord-Norges geografiske nærhet til Finland og Russland har preget landsdelen. Handel og kulturutveksling har lange tradisjoner. Pomorhandelen langs kysten med de russiske pomorene og landtrafikken gjennom dalene og over fjellene i Troms og Finnmark til Finland har fraktet varer, tjenester og mennesker – kort sagt kultur i lange tider. Det er faktisk i den moderne tid, etter revolusjoner, verdenskriger, deling av Europa og den sør-orienterte sentraliseringen i de enkelte land at trafikken internt i nordområdene er svekket. I Pomorhandelens ånd ønsker vi å bidra til å fremme handel og kulturutveksling mellom Finland, Russland, de baltiske statene og Norge. Tromsø Internasjonale Filmfestival har en langsiktig ambisjon om å bli en portal for film fra disse områdene til Norge og Skandinavia. I første omgang skal Tromsø bli den by i Norge med flest antall russiske og finske filmer på programmet, og vi skal bli den norske byen hvor flest mennesker ser film fra Finland, Russland og Baltikum. Når det nye kinoanlegget står klart i 2005 og vår kapasitet er radikalt øket, håper vi at vi skal klare å bli det beste skandinaviske markedet for film fra ØST!
The geographical proximity of Northern Norway to Finland and Russia has made an indelible stamp on this part of our country. Trade and cultural exchange have long traditions. The Pomor trade along the coast with the Russian Pomor as well as traffic by land through valleys and over the mountains of Troms and Finnmark to Finland have for a long time transported goods, services and people – in short culture. Actually, it is in modern times, after revolutions, world wars, the partitioning of Europe and the southward centralisation in each country, that the internal traffic in the northern areas has been weakened. In the spirit of the Pomor trade we want to do our part to further trade and cultural exchange between Finland, Russia, the Baltic countries and Norway. Tromsø International Film Festival has a long-term ambition of becoming a portal for film from these parts to Norway and Scandinavia. Tromsø shall become the city in Norway with the highest number of Russian and Finnish films in their festival programme, and we shall become the city with the highest number of spectators for films from Finland, Russia and the Baltic states. When the new cinema complex is ready in 2005, radically increasing our capacity, we hope to become the best Scandinavian market for films from the EAST!
