Regissøren Hayao Miyazaki ble født i Tokyo i 1941. Han avla eksamen i statsvitenskap og økonomi i 1963 ved det prestisjefylte Gakashuinuniversitetet. I studenttiden ble han dypt interessert i litteratur for barn og animasjonsfilm. Han arbeidet seg opp gjennom hierarkiet i den japanske animasjonsindustrien, og står i dag bak en ubrutt rekke av suksessrike tegnefilmer.

The Director Hayao Miyazaki was born in Tokyo in 1941. He graduated from the prestigious Gakashuin University in 1963 with a degree in political science and economics. In his student years he became deeply interested in children’s literature and animation. After having worked his way up the Japanese animation hierarchy, he has made an unbroken string of successful animated features.

Familien flytter fra det gamle hjemstedet, og ti år gamle Chihiro er alt annet enn fornøyd. Bedre blir det ikke når far kjører seg vill, og de ender opp utenfor en mystisk tunnel langt ute i skogen. På andre siden av tunnelen venter en tilsynelatende forlatt by... og en forbannelse! Foreldrene forvandles til griser, og Chihiro trollbindes og settes til å jobbe for den regjerende heksa Yubaba i hennes offentlige bad for gamle guder! Vil hun klare å bryte forbannelsen?

Den tegnede historien om Chihiro som må overvinne heksa i spøkelsesbyen er allerede blitt Japans største kassasuksess noensinne og en stor hit i Vesten. Filmen vant Gullbjørnen på Berlin-festivalen i 2002.

A family moves away from home and ten-year-old Chihiro is not happy at all. Things do not improve when the father loses his way, and they end up outside a mysterious tunnel, far out in the woods. On the other side of the tunnel, a seemingly abandoned city waits... and a curse! The parents are turned into pigs, and Chihiro is put under a spell, being forced to work for the reigning witch Yubaba in her public bathhouse for ancient gods! Will she be able to break the spell?

The animation story of Chihiro who must overcome the witch of the ghost city has already become Japan’s greatest box office hit ever, and is a big hit also in the West. The film won the Golden Bear at the Berlin festival in 2002.
