My Dear Sisters of the Omicron Mu Omega Chapter:

Greetings and Happy Founders’ Day 2023! As we embark on Alpha Kappa Alpha’s 115th anniversary, let us take this time to reflect on and celebrate our Sorority’s rich history of sisterhood and service. For 115 years, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® has been premiere in promoting academic excellence, fostering leadership, and rendering service to all mankind. Ours is an organization of “firsts.” Not only are we the first intercollegiate Greek-letter sorority for Black women, our members continue to break barriers as “firsts” in science, the arts, education, in space, and in the White House.

Today’s theme, “Celebrating the Traditions of Our Founders while Soaring to Greater Heights of Service and Sisterhood,” embodies the spirit of servant-leadership that was created by our Founders and reinforces our responsibility to continue Soaring to Greater Heights of Service and Sisterhood.

On this day, we reaffirm Alpha Kappa Alpha’s legacy and rededicate ourselves to the “fellowship sincere and rare” that we vowed to protect and perpetuate upon our initiation. We are also forever indebted to the charter members of Omicron Mu Omega, who had the vision to further expand our sisterhood within Dallas, TX and the surrounding communities.

Congratulations and thank you to the Founders’ Day Committee for organizing such a wonderful Founders’ Day celebration. Let us also congratulate those members who have reached the Diamond, Pearl, Golden, and Silver Sister membership milestone this year. And thank you to all the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha who continue to stand together in sisterhood and “service to all mankind” during this season of renewal and recommitment. Again, Happy Founders’ Day!

With sisterly love,

We Are …We Are South Central Alpha Kappa Alpha!

Happy Founders’ Day!

Members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®

Members of Omicron Mu Omega Chapter, I am delighted to be with you today!

In this 115th year since our founding on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D C , where sixteen women boldly and courageously undertook a journey that would change the world, I am deeply inspired to witness more than 355,000 initiated members and 1,061 chapters spanning 12 countries Soaring to Greater Heights of Service and Sisterhood. As we reflect upon the profound difference Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® makes throughout our local communities and across the globe, our 115th anniversary marks a time for strengthening our sisterhood and reinforcing our commitment “to be of service to all mankind.” This is truly a time for reflection and renewal.

As we remember our beloved founders who created a lasting and enduring sisterhood that stands the test of time, we can only imagine what they must be thinking and feeling now during this historic moment From the halls of the White House to the streets of rural towns from the shores of both great oceans to the sand dunes of the Middle East, Alpha Kappa Alpha’s span is simply remarkable. We must recognize WE are history-makers!

Members of Alpha Kappa Alpha are known to build communities and transform lives within our Sorority and within the communities we serve. No matter where we go, we will make an impact. Further, I truly believe, Alpha Kappa Alpha begins and ends with sisterhood. It is the glue that binds us all together and makes us a unified body. Sisterhood is the foundation upon which Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was established and continues to flourish

Omicron Mu Omega Chapter’s outstanding service by annually awarding more than $30,000 in collegiate scholarships, mentoring hundreds of girls through our CACHET Youth Group, and offering more than 500 hours and 354 acts of service in one day is truly exemplary and laudable!

During your 115th Founders’ Day observance, I invite you to Strengthen our Sisterhood! I invite you to intentionally take time to fellowship and form lifelong relationships based on affinity, love, trust, respect, and shared goals and interests, while concurrently building on our foundation to serve others

Lakeiah Cheatham

Silver Honoree Dr. Lakeiah Cheatham was initiated into the Rho Omicron Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® in Baytown, Texas on November 10, 1996, as number six of twenty-three on the Sense of Essence line. It was decided “Harmony” was the best name assignment for her due to her ability to diffuse situations by being practical, relatable, and sisterly which are all traits that still ring true today. She is a native Texan and two-time HBCU graduate from Prairie View A&M University with a bachelor;s of Art and master’s in Education. Her doctorate in Educational Leadership was earned at Lamar University.

Dr. Cheatham was drawn to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® initially due to one of the strategic goals supporting sickle cell awareness during former International President Eva Evans’ tenure. Not only is it an illness that has directly impacted her first cousin, but Dr. Cheatham also has a sickle cell trait. She has had to be vigilant about educating herself and her offspring about the dangers of the disease. While in Baytown, service projects consisted of supporting the elderly and youth alike. Upon moving back to the Dallas area, she became active with the Alpha Xi Omega chapter and assisted with the debutante committee to revise the illustrious program. After marrying and becoming a mother of four children she continued as a general member supporting projects with various chapters. When two of her daughters became active in Omicron Mu Omega’s Cachet Youth Group program the desire shifted to become more committed with the mentoring initiative. After years of unofficially helping with the committee, she became an official member of the Omicron Mu Omega chapter and the Cachet Youth Group committee in 2018. As an educator for over 26 years, this committee has been near and dear to her heart.

Professionally, Dr. Cheatham is a professional service director for McGraw Hill Education where she supports teachers with increasing student reading comprehension and coaching principals on how to best support teachers all over the continental United States. Although she loves all facets of education, the primary focus is on teaching and learning. Dr. Cheatham has worked in many areas of education: from teacher to high school principal, helping early childhood students develop school ready skills to developing a path for high school students to earn an associate degree/high school diploma, and most recently creating a platform that offers support to retain novice teachers in the very important profession of teaching (EduD.O.T.S. Diverse Operating Training System).

Personally, her heart forever beats for Honey-Do, Victor Cheatham, Jr., and the children they have been fortunate to usher through this wonderful life together (Victor III, Karrington, Klarke, and Karson). Dr. Cheatham is eternally grateful for having nurturing parents, an amazing brother, a supportive mother-inlove, a host of extended family, and forever friends to help her navigate life’s journey.
