Courtney Williams

As a native Mississippian, Rachel George is a transplanted Texan who decided to follow the mantra, “Go West, young lady.” A graduate of Alcorn State University with a bachelor’s in Special Education, a Masters in Reading/Elementary Education from the University of Mississippi, an Educational Specialist in Elementary Education from Mississippi State University, and a Mid-Management from Texas Woman’s University, she set out on a journey to share her passion of teaching at Marshall Elementary School and in the Dallas Independent School District.

She was selected as Who’s Who Among students in American Colleges and Universities, received the Alpha Kappa Alpha’s Earnestine Holloway Award for Excellence, and selected as one of the Fifty Young Leaders in Mississippi by the Mississippi Economic Council. She graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1976.

In the Spring of 1973, she pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® under the leadership of Gamma Phi Chapter at Alcorn State University. After many months of pledging, she became an Alpha Kappa Alpha Soror in December 1973. Upon arrival in Dallas, TX, she eventually joined the Omicron Mu Omega chapter in Dallas, TX. She has participated in many services through donations and offerings. Since becoming a member, she has become a Silver Star and achieved her Lifetime membership.

She began her teaching career at Marshall Elementary School in North Carrollton, MS and stayed for 4 years. Ms. George devoted 33 years in Dallas ISD as a teacher, Staff Development Associate, Assistant Principal, Principal, and Executive Director. One of her schools received Exemplary status (highest honor in Texas) for seven consecutive years during her tenure as Principal. The school was the recipient of many awards: National Alliance of Black School Educator Distinguished School, Title 1 Distinguished School Award, National Center for Urban School Transformation Award School finalist, TBEC Honor Roll, Texas Successful Schools Award, Governor’s Excellence Award and Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Service Award.

She has also received various awards: Area 2 Principal of the year, DISD Principal of the Year, TABSE’s Distinguished Principal Award, NABSE’s Principal of the year, Texas National Distinguished Principal Finalist, M.L. Holland Education Award, Profiles in Leadership Award in Education, The Hammer Leadership Award from Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Outstanding Practicing Educator Award from African American Educators Archives, Embracers of Change: Pavers of Success Award from National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Club, Inc., and the Howard E. Robinson Award of Excellence from the DFW Alumni Chapter of Alcorn State University.

In 2014, she retired with a combined 37 years from DISD and Carroll County.

She is a member of One Community Church under the leadership of Dr. Conway Edwards where she has served on the Women’s Volunteer Team, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®., Dallas/Texas Retired Teachers Association, African American Education Archives and History Program, and DFW Alcorn Alumni Chapter (Alcorn State University).
