“There was a country where once cut all the flowers, while on children's toys closed the fantasy, where to hate was everyday bread. There was a country where once...... They banished God.” The celebrations for New Year have always had in Cuban popular religiosity an augural or cabalistic character, which brings us closer to magical-religious systems of Afro descent, than to the Christian faith. In the popular sectors, the result of the Itá or divination record made by babalaos or priests of the Oracle Orunmla Ifá in the Rule of Ocha or Santeria, Cuban transculturation of the Religion of the Orishas of Nigeria, which is the most widespread among Afro-Cuban cults, is very anxiously awaited. From the 1950s on a growing boom, horoscopes published in magazines and newspapers or broadcast on the radio, where predictions for each of the zodiac signs appeared. Even today, these are one of the most listened to spaces for those who tune in to foreign broadcasts. 20

The wait for the New Year has not been in Cuba, since 1950, a family gathering party in the manner of the Good Night, gradually becoming from that date a social and recreational activity and moving from the home setting to public places such as theaters, restaurants, cabaret, nightclubs or ballrooms. The triumph of the Revolution on January 1, 1959, also the commemoration of this magnificent event in Cuban history becomes the occasion of the end-of-year festivities, preserving its validity to this day. However, we must consider that gestures of popular religiosity persist in New Year's Eve festivities, but closer to the superstitious than to popular piety.

Don't give up that life is that, continue the journey, pursue your dreams, unlocking time, run the rubble and uncover the sky. Please don't give up, even if the cold is burning, though fear bites, even if the sun goes down and the wind shuts down, there's still fire in your soul, there's still life in your dreams, because every day is a start, because this is the time and the best time.

This year the covid's onsleds have arrived on the island. It's going to be a different New Year's Eve. Hopelessness controls the streets. I only hope that God will pour out wisdom and strength on the Major of the Antilles and the Cubans understand once and for all : The celebration is a triumph against logic, against the difficult situations of life. It is an unplaceable and unrepeatable opportunity to shout at the four winds: It's a beautiful life, or as the poet Mario Benedetti would say :
