Cuando salí de La Havana

WHEN I LEFT HAVANA

…. when we thought that we were already adapted to life in Canada...

COVID-19 arrived to completely change the political-social landscape of nations.

We are Lianed and Manfred, a Cuban couple who made the leap from the Tropics to the Tundra by moving to Winnipeg from Havana in the spring of 2017. Being Manfred an Electronic Engineer specialized in Sound Recording, we applied in March 2014 to the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program. By receiving the approval letter in December 2015, we were ready to apply for our Permanent Residences, which we submitted in February 2016. That process finished in November 2016, when we received our Confirmation of Permanent Residences and set the date to move next spring.

We arrived in Winnipeg in March 2017, with temperatures of -12C and lots of snow. For us, such drastic change was an exotic, fun adventure accompanied by our two young children.

At first we felt relaxed, like on vacation. We had been very busy, preparing the trip and ensuring the best conditions were created for our family members that were staying in Havana. As well as advancing in several work projects, one of which has not yet finished: the documentary feature film “My Strawberry, My Chocolate” in which Lianed has been working on since 2012, still on the editing process.

Our adaptation to Winnipeg has been smooth and happy: from the warm welcome given by our friends Vladimir Montero and Carmen Zelaya, to the wonderful people we have found, that have turned this frozen prairies into a warm friendly place, to the fact that we found quickly a nice apartment, from whose balcony we could see the playground of our children’s school, Victor Mager, where they received a fundamental support from their wonderful teachers. By the end of the year, Lianed was working as a Photographer at the Winnipeg Art Gallery and Manfred had already broken the ice working as a Sound Mixer on location recording the sound of several local productions, including two feature films: Snowed Inn Christmas and Into Invisible Light.

From that moment on, time has passed very quickly and we hope that this nightmare of COVID-19 will end, so that we can all reconnect with our friends and our dreams. That’s why... please don’t stop wearing your mask and keep your distance.

United we are stronger!

…. y justo cuando pensábamos que ya estábamos adaptados a la vida

en Canadá… llegó el COVID-19 para cambiar completamente el panorama político-social de las naciones.

Somos Lianed y Manfred, una pareja de cubanos que dimos el salto del Trópico a la Tundra mudándonos a Winnipeg desde La Habana en la primavera del 2017. Siendo Manfred Ingeniero Electrónico especializado en Grabación de Sonido, aplicamos en marzo del 2014 al Programa de Nominación Provincial de Manitoba. Tuvimos la carta de aprobación en diciembre del 2015, con la cual aplicamos a la Residencia Permanente en febrero del 2016, proceso que culminó en noviembre del 2016, cuando recibimos la Confirmación de las Residencias Permanentes y fijamos fecha para mudarnos en la primavera próxima.

Llegamos a Winnipeg en marzo del 2017, con temperaturas de -12 C y mucha nieve. Fue una aventura divertida y exótica vivir tan drástico cambio acompañados de nuestros dos hijos pequeños. Al inicio nos sentimos relajados, como de vacaciones. Habíamos estado muy ocupados, preparando el viaje y creando las mejores condiciones posibles para nuestros familiares que se quedaban en Cuba. Además de avanzar en varios proyectos de trabajo, uno de ellos aún sin terminar: el largometraje documental “Mi Fresa, Mi Chocolate”, en el que Lianed trabaja desde el 2012, aún en proceso de edición.

Nuestra adaptación a Winnipeg ha sido feliz, comenzando por la calurosa acogida brindada por nuestros amigos Vladimir Montero y Carmen Zelaya, pasando por todas las personas increíbles que hemos conocido aquí, cuya amistad ha convertido estas heladas praderas en un cálido hogar; hasta el hecho de encontrar un bonito apartamento, desde cuyo balcón podíamos ver el patio de juegos de la escuela de nuestros hijos, quienes recibieron un apoyo fundamental por parte de sus maestros y se adaptaron al nuevo sistema educativo con una rapidez inimaginable. Para el fin de año, Lianed trabajaba como Fotógrafa en el Winnipeg Art Gallery y Manfred ya había roto el hielo grabando el Sonido Directo de varias producciones locales, entre ellas dos largometrajes: Snowed Inn Christmas y Invisible Light.

A partir de ese momento el tiempo ha transcurrido muy velozmente y así de rápido quisiéramos que termine esta pesadilla del COVID-19, para que todos podamos volver a re-conectarnos con nuestros amigos y nuestros sueños. Por eso... Por favor no dejes de usar tu máscara y mantener la distancia.
