JAIME VARGAS Méxicano, “Ballet Master” del Royal Winnnipeg Ballet. Inició su formación en danza a los 14 años. Su primer debut profesional fue en 1989, con la Compañía Nacional de Danza de México y en 2004 se incorporó al Royal Winnnipeg Ballet como Primer Bailarín. En esta entrevista nos contará parte de su trayectoria como inmigrante en esta ciudad.
JAIME VARGAS Mexicano, “Master of Ballet” of the Royal Ballet Winnnipeg. He began his dance training at the age of 14. His first professional debut was in 1989 with the National Dance Company of Mexico and in 2004 he joined the Royal Winnnipeg Ballet as First Dancer. In this interview, he will tell us part of his career as an immigrant in this city.
1. Jaime, after your beginnings as a dancer, what led you to leave your country?
I was presented with the opportunity to join the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and knowing that this company has great international recognition I liked the idea and got in contact with their Director, Andre Lewis. I sent them all my recent material (videos of my latest performances) and it matched the level and style they were looking for so they offered me a position as a Principal Dancer. I really liked Canada so I decided to join the RWB and move to Canada
1. ¿Jaime después de tu inicio como bailarin, ¿qué te impulsó a dejar tu país?
Surgió la oportunidad de unirme al Royal Winnippeg Ballet, el cual es una companía de gran renombre internacional. Me gustó la idea y contacté con el Director Andre Lewis.Le mandé todo mi material danzario, el cual coincidió con el nivel y estilo que buscaban y..así fue que me ofrecieron la posición de Primer Bailarín y como Canadá es un país que me gustaba mucho, decidí unirme a esta companía y venir a vivir acá.
2. ¿Cuál fue tu mayor desafío como joven inmigrante desde que saliste de México?
He pasado por muchos paises pero solo he vivido en Inglaterra, Australia y ahora Canadá. Los retos fueron diferentes, por ejemplo : Cuando fui a estudiar en Inglaterra no tenía dinero, sabía muy poco inglés y no había sido aceptado en ninguna escuela de danza todavía, asi que fue un gran reto, pero en general creo que el mayor reto en todos los paises fue adaptarme a un sistema y sociedad diferentes, alejado de mi familia y de todo aquello que conocía y que extrañe grandemente (Y aún extraño).
2. What has been your greatest challenge as a young immigrant since you left Mexico?
I have been in different countries but I’ve only lived in England, Australia and Canada and the challenges were different in each one of them, as an example, when I went to study in England I didn’t have any money, I didn’t speak the language and I had not been accepted into any dance school yet so it was a great challenge, but in general I feel that the biggest challenge in every country was to adapt to a different society and a different system altogether, away from my Family and from all the things I knew and that I missed enormously (and I still do)

3. ¿Cómo trabajaste en tu mente la motivación para continuar en la búsqueda de tu sueño?
Siempre tenía el objetivo muy claro y sabía que aunque las situaciones no fueran ideales, solo eran transitorias y me acercaban cada vez más a lo que quería.
3. How did you find in your mind the motivation to continue in the pursuit of your dream?
I always had my goal very clear in my mind and even though many times the conditions were less than ideal, I knew that they were temporary, means to an end and that those situations were getting me closer to my goal
4. ¿Después de tu experiencia en otros paises, ¿qué te motivó a venir a Winnipeg?
Fue un asunto un poco de destino. ya que yo no me encontraba buscando un cambio. Estaba como Primer Bailarin en la Compañía Nacional de Danza de México en ese momento y un maestro con el que había trabajado, me contactó para decirme que existía esta posibilidad en Winnipeg y si me interesaba, así que decidí tomarla.
4. After your experience in other countries, what motivated you to come to Winnipeg?
It was a little bit of destiny. At that moment I was a Principal Dancer with Mexico’s National Company and I wasn’t really looking for a change but a teacher with whom I had worked in the past, contacted me to tell me about that the there was a possibility in Winnipeg and to ask me if I would be interested in it so I decided to take the opportunity
5. ¿Cuál ha sido tu trayectoria desde que llegaste a Winnipeg, fue muy difícil?
Lo difícil fue que todo el repertorio de RWB era nuevo para mi, ya que aunque algunos ballets eran los mismos (como el Cascanueces) las coreografías eran muy distintas, así que me tuve que aprender todo el material casi desde cero. De hecho, los primeros dos años fueron de aprendizaje constante.
5. What has been your trajectory since you arrived in Winnipeg, was it very difficult?
The difficult part was that all RWB’s repertoire was new to me and even though I had danced some of the ballets (like the Nutcracker) the choreography was different so I had to learn it almost from scratch so the first two years were of constant learning of new material
6. En tu área,¿crees que el trabajo voluntario es importante?
Me ha encantado poder participar con MexyCan al igual que con el Pabellon Mexicano en Folklorama, ya que considero de gran importancia mantener ese vínculo con nuestras raíces y poder compartir nuestra cultura y tradiciones con la comunidad y la propia familia ; y siento que esa gran labor no seria sustentable si no fuera por la participación de nosotros como voluntarios.
6. In your area, do you think volunteer work is important?
I loved to be able to participate with MexyCan in their programs as well as with the Mexican Pavillion in Folklorama because I feel is extremely important to keep the ties with our roots and to be able to share pur culture and traditions with the community and with our own Family and I know this is a big endeavor which would not be possible if we didn’t participate as volunteers
7. En base a tu experiencia personal, ¿te gustaría dejar un mensaje a la comunidad Latina en Winnipeg?
Solo les quiero decir que me da gusto que exista esta comunidad Latina en Winnipeg, ya que es un gran recordatorio de nuestra cultura, tradiciones y nos hace sentir como en casa.
7. Based on your personal experience, would you like to leave a message for the Latino community in Winnipeg?
I just want to tell them that I’m really happy this Latin community exists here in Winnipeg because it’s a great reminder of our culture and traditions and it makes us feel at home.
