La más caribeña de las ciudades cubanas llega a esta entrega para hacer gala de sus múltiples encantos.

Es julio y Santiago de Cuba acoge la Fiesta del Fuego, gran celebración del Caribe, su arte, identidad, tradiciones e historia, que estaremos descubriendo en estas páginas.

Una vez en este destino tórrido y multicultural, la invitación es a disfrutar de sus atractivos, conocer sus secretos, festividades y riqueza natural. De ahí nuestra propuesta de sitios imperdibles para visitar durante tres días, una ruta que combina naturaleza, cultura y una urbe maravillosa.

Asimismo, estaremos recorriendo emblemáticos lugares como la Casa de la Trova Pepe Sánchez, Catedral Musical del enclave y para los amantes de la naturaleza proponemos La Gran Piedra con las vistas de un paisaje espectacular.

Si se trata de paraísos en el oriente del país, convidamos a visitar Cayo Saetía, un edén tropical en la costa norte de Holguín que mezcla los encantos del mar y la naturaleza.

La música en este número se acompaña del disco «Mi alma en canciones» del pianista Rolando Luna, quien trae a la contemporaneidad piezas memorables del acervo sonoro nacional.

Con el mes de julio llega también el Concurso Internacional de Fotografía Subacuática IMASUB 2023, cita que propicia capturar imágenes inigualables de la vida submarina en María La Gorda. Al afamado certamen dedicaremos un espacio.

Disfrutemos entonces de una edición que trae la vibra del Caribe, la magia de una ciudad y la fortuna de continuar descubriendo los encantos de esta Cuba Única.

The most Caribbean of Cuban cities has arrived in this issue to showcase its many charms.

It's July, and Santiago de Cuba is hosting the Fiesta del Fuego, a grand celebration of the Caribbean, its art, identity, traditions, and history, which we will be exploring in these pages.

Once in this torrid and multicultural destination, the invitation is to enjoy its attractions, get to know its secrets, festivities, and natural wealth. Hence, our proposal of mustsee places to visit during three days—a route that combines nature, culture, and a wonderful city.

Likewise, we will be visiting emblematic places such as the Casa de la Trova Pepe Sanchez, the Musical Cathedral of the enclave, and for nature lovers, we propose La Gran Piedra, which offers views of a spectacular landscape.

If we're talking about paradises in the east of the country, we invite you to visit Cayo Saetía, a tropical paradise on the north coast of Holguín that combines the charms of the sea and nature.

The music in this issue is accompanied by the album "Mi alma en canciones" by pianist Rolando Luna, who brings memorable pieces of the national sound heritage into contemporary times.

The month of July also brings the IMASUB 2023 International Underwater Photography Contest, an event that will capture unique images of the underwater life in María La Gorda. We will dedicate a section to this famous contest.

Therefore, let's enjoy an edition that brings the vibe of the Caribbean, the magic of a city, and the fortune of continuing to discover the charms of this unique Cuba.

Geografía: Ubicada a la entrada del golfo de México, el archipiélago cubano está formado por la isla de Cuba, la Isla de la Juventud y aproximadamente 4,195 cayos e islotes. Cerca de 140 km la separan las Bahamas; 77 km Haití; 180 km de Florida; 210 km Cancún y 146 km de Jamaica.

La silueta de Cuba, alargada y estrecha, alcanza los 120 km de longitud y entre 32 y 145 km de ancho. En total el territorio abarca 110.922 km, lo que la distingue como la mayor de las Antillas y por su ubicación geográfica la llaman también la llave del Golfo.

Geography: Located in the Caribbean Sea, the Cuban archipelago includes the Island of Cuba, the Island of Youth – Isla de la Juventud – and approximately some 4,195 keys and islets. Cada año, en el mes de julio, Santiago de Cuba se convierte en el epicentro de la cultura caribeña. Es la Fiesta del Fuego, celebración multitudinaria del Caribe, su arte, identidad, tradiciones e historia.

La edición 42 de la cita llega del 3 al 9 de julio colmando la hermosa ciudad de esa auténtica energía que hermana a los pueblos de la región. Esta vez, está dedicada a las celebraciones mexicanas de la vida y la muerte, un reconocimiento a la diversidad cultural, espiritualidad, tradiciones y la cultura material que distinguen a México y sus festividades. Resulta entonces, la suerte de adentrarse en la singularidad de estos festejos, sentir su magia, abrazar su historia y aprender de ritos y creencias ancestrales.

Every year in July, Santiago de Cuba becomes the epicenter of Caribbean culture. It is the Fiesta del Fuego, a massive celebration of the Caribbean, its art, identity, traditions and history. The 42nd edition of the event takes place from July 3rd to 9th, filling the beautiful city with the authentic energy that unites the people of the region. This time, it is dedicated to the Mexican celebrations of life and death, a recognition of the cultural diversity, spirituality, traditions and material culture that distinguish Mexico and its festivities. It is therefore a chance to delve into the uniqueness of these celebrations, feel their magic, embrace their history and learn about ancestral rites and beliefs.

El Festival del Caribe acoge un programa tan diverso como fascinante. El arte en la multiplicidad de sus manifestaciones llegará a cada rincón de la tierra caliente. Más de una veintena de escenarios en plazas y otras áreas del enclave serán sitio de memorables presentaciones. Un evento que promete jornadas llenas de ritmos, música alegre y contagiosa a partir de conciertos y la arrolladora conga santiaguera atrayendo, agrupando, poniendo a todos a bailar.

The Caribbean Festival hosts a program as diverse as it is fascinating. Art in the multiplicity of its manifestations will reach every corner of the hot land. More than twenty stages in squares and other areas of the enclave will be the site of memorable presentations. An event that promises days full of rhythms, joyful and contagious music from concerts and the famous conga santiaguera attracting, grouping, putting everyone to dance.

Los amantes del séptimo arte encontrarán en la Muestra de Cine Caribeño la oportunidad de disfrutar de producciones asociadas a la presencia de la muerte en el cine de la región. De igual forma, el evento propone otros espacios artísticos como el Encuentro Internacional de Tatuaje y Perforación, el Taller de Teatro Popular, el Taller de Danza y Percusión y el Encuentro de jóvenes creadores Almas Nuevas. Sin dudas, una cofradía de expresiones con puro sabor caribeño.

Como en cada entrega, investigación y academia se integran al itinerario, propiciando diálogos e intercambio de conocimientos que enriquecen la mente y el alma. Este año se distingue con la realización del III Congreso Mundial sobre la Muerte que propone profundizar en el tema desde una mirada multidisciplinar, a partir de estudios mexicanos y la participación de especialistas de otras naciones. Asimismo, tendrán lugar encuentros especializados como el Taller de Oralidad, el de Estudios Literarios, Arqueología del Caribe y el Taller Internacional de Religiosidad Popular.

Lovers of the seventh art will find in the Caribbean Film Festival the opportunity to enjoy productions associated with the presence of death in the region's cinema. Likewise, the event offers other artistic spaces such as the International Tattoo and Piercing Encounter, the Popular Theater Workshop, the Dance and Percussion Workshop and the New Souls Encounter of young creators. Undoubtedly, a symphony of expressions with pure Caribbean flavor.

As in each edition, research and academia are integrated into the itinerary, promoting dialogue and exchange of knowledge that enrich the mind and soul. This year is distinguished by the III World Congress on Death, which proposes to delve into the subject from a multidisciplinary perspective, based on Mexican studies and the participation of specialists from other nations. Specialized meetings will also be held, such as the Orality Workshop, the Literary Studies Workshop, Caribbean Archeology and the International Workshop on Popular Religiosity.

No faltarán los espacios tradicionales del popular evento. El Desfile de la Serpiente, rítmico y multicolor, regresa para hacer gala de la diversidad cultural y congregar al gentío jubiloso que siempre lo disfruta, así como el Desfile del Fuego que estremece las calles santiagueras. Para despedir el encuentro se realiza la legendaria Quema del Diablo, uno de los momentos más emocionantes de la fiesta, con los vítores alejando el mal y abrazando buenos augurios, mientras el icónico gran diablo arde rodeado de la multitud.

There will also be the traditional spaces of the popular event. The Serpent Parade, rhythmic and multicolored, returns to show the cultural diversity and gather the jubilant crowd that always enjoys it, as well as the Fire Parade that shakes the streets of Santiago. To bid farewell to the gathering, the legendary Burning of the Devil takes place, one of the most exciting moments of the festival, with the cheers chasing away evil and embracing good omens, while the iconic great devil burns surrounded by the crowd.

Vivir la Fiesta del Fuego es la emoción inigualable que produce conectar con la esencia del Caribe y la cultura popular. Es dejarse llevar inevitablemente por los ritmos, disfrutar del arte, el colorido y los saberes. Significa estrechar lazos, salvaguardar las raíces, disfrutar de un Santiago lleno de encantos y alegrar el alma. Es también, en su cuadragésimo segunda edición, la dicha de sentir y vivir todo México desde la más caribeña de las ciudades cubanas

Experiencing the Fiesta del Fuego is the incomparable emotion of connecting with the essence of the Caribbean and the popular culture. It is to let yourself be inevitably carried away by the rhythms, to enjoy the art, the color and the knowledge. It means strengthening ties, safeguarding the roots, enjoying a Santiago full of charms and rejoicing the soul. Furthermore, it is in its forty-second edition, the joy of feeling and living all of Mexico from the most Caribbean of Cuban cities.

En la entrada de la afamada bahía de Nipe, considerada la mayor del país, emergió este sitio espectacular con una superficie de aproximadamente 42 km2. Por mar o por tierra, los visitantes pueden acceder al enclave y descubrir la singularidad de sus encantos. Las maravillas naturales que lo distinguen resultan uno de los mayores atractivos de estos parajes. El cayo constituye un admirable refugio para la flora y la fauna que a su vez conserva especies endémicas locales y nacionales. Su vegetación, diversa y exuberante, cautiva a quienes recorren los bosques y pastizales, entornos de una belleza sin igual donde la magia de la naturaleza eleva los sentidos.

Visitar este edén del oriente cubano implica la fortuna de admirar la vida silvestre en sus praderas, donde habitan libremente animales exóticos y autóctonos. At the entrance of the famous Nipe Bay, considered the largest in the country, emerged this spectacular site with an area of approximately 42 km2. Capturing unique images of underwater life

La XI Edición del Concurso Internacional de Fotografía Subacuática IMASUB 2023, se realizará entre los días 10 y 15 del próximo mes de julio en su base de operaciones acostumbrada, María La Gorda, en la provincia de Pinar del Río, organizada por el Grupo de Turismo Gaviota, S.A A este certamen, que reúne cada año a buzos de todas partes del mundo, están convocados todos aquellos que deseen participar, tanto profesionales como aficionados a la fotografía subacuática; hasta ahora han confirmado su presencia fotógrafos de México, Estados Unidos, y Cuba.

The XI Edition of the International Underwater Photography Contest, IMASUB 2023, will be held between July 10th and 15th at its usual base of operations, María La Gorda, in the province of Pinar del Río. The event is organized by the Gaviota Tourism Group, S.A. Both professional and amateur underwater photographers are invited to participate in this contest, which attracts divers from around the world every year. So far, photographers from Mexico, the United States, and Cuba have confirmed their attendance.

En la presente edición se concursará en cinco categorías.

En Macrofotografía, podrá presentarse toda foto en la que el sujeto se graba como tamaño de vida o mayor en el sensor de imagen de la cámara, también conocida como una relación de reproducción 1:1 (o mayor).

Fotos de cualquier animal bajo el agua incluyendo peces, tiburones, leones de mar, pulpos, aves marinas, y otros, en las que se muestre como único tema la personalidad del animal, de cuerpo completo o enmarcados firmemente alrededor de la cara / cabeza, competirán en el aparatado Retrato de vida marina, mientras que en Comportamiento de vida marina competirán aquellas imágenes que muestren la vida marina en acción.

Al premio en la categoría Paisaje de arrecife podrán aspirar fotos donde el arrecife vivo sea el protagonista. Los paisajes de arrecifes pueden utilizar la técnica de gran angular de enfoque cerrado y también pueden incorporar peces grandes, buzos u otros animales, siempre y cuando se muestren en el hábitat de los arrecifes entre los corales duros y blandos, esponjas y otros arrecifes de vida.

This year's edition will feature five categories.

In the Macro Photography category, participants can submit any photo where the subject is recorded as life-size or larger on the camera's image sensor, also known as a 1:1 reproduction ratio (or larger).

The Marine Life Portrait category will accept photos of any underwater animal, including fish, sharks, sea lions, octopuses, seabirds, and others, showcasing the animal's personality as the main subject. Photos can be full body shots or tightly framed around the face/ head.

Marine Life Behavior will compete for images that capture marine life in action.

The Reef Landscape category will award photos where the living reef takes center stage. Reef landscapes may employ the wide-angle close-focus technique and may also include large fish, divers, or other animals, as long as they are depicted within the reef habitat surrounded by hard and soft corals, sponges, and other reef life.

Por último, el apartado Tema del evento aceptará una fotografía submarina que muestre el tema seleccionado por el comité organizador junto al jurado del evento y que será la utilizada para promocionarlo el próximo año; dicho tema se dará a conocer en la reunión informativa previa a la competición. La participación en el concurso incluye una noche en La Habana, transporte, alojamiento y alimentación durante cuatro días en María la Gorda, y las inmersiones en búsqueda de fotos ganadoras.

La pureza de las aguas de María La Gorda, que facilita una visibilidad de hasta treinta metros de distancia longitudinal en profundidades, y sus impresionantes fondos marinos, convierte a este sitio en el ideal para la práctica del buceo y de la fotografía submarina.

Existen allí varias zonas de inmersión; destacan Valle de Coral Negro, considerado la superficie coralina más extensa de Cuba, y Salón de María, decorado también con corales multicolores y los hermosos lirios de mar.

Finally, the Theme category will accept one underwater photograph that reflects the theme selected by the organizing committee and the event's jury. This winning photograph will be used to promote the event in the following year. The theme will be announced during the pre-competition briefing.

Participation in the contest includes one night in Havana, transportation, lodging, food for four days in María La Gorda, and dives in search of the winning photos.

The pristine waters of María La Gorda offer up to 30 meters of visibility at depth, making it an ideal location for diving and underwater photography. The impressive seabed and several dive zones, including the Black Coral Valley, considered the most extensive coral surface in Cuba, and Maria's Hall, adorned with multicolored corals and beautiful sea lilies, make this site truly captivating.

All images submitted by contestants may be used by Gaviota Tourism Group, S.A. to promote its products and services, with proper acknowledgment given to the photographers.

Santiago de Cuba, propone la experiencia única de escalar La Gran Piedra, uno de los más importantes monumentos nacionales del país; registrada en el libro Guinness de los Records, como la roca de sus dimensiones situada a mayor altura en el mundo, 1234 metros sobre el nivel del mar, y la tercera por su tamaño.

Situada frente a la costa sur de la subregión Sierra Maestra, para llegar hasta ella, se debe escalar 452 peldaños, en medio de una densa niebla que asegura una temperatura agradable.

La Gran Piedra mide 51 metros de largo y, entre 25 y 30 metros de ancho, con un peso cercano a 63 000 toneladas; es Paisaje Natural Protegido de la nación y uno de los mayores atractivos del Gran Parque Nacional Sierra Maestra.

Los expertos consideran que la explosión de un volcán submarino condicionó su surgimiento; devenido mirador hacia un paraje natural de impresionante belleza, algunos aseguran que en noches claras se vislumbran las luces de Jamaica.

The Great Stone: Getting Up Close to the Sky

Santiago de Cuba offers the unique experience of climbing La Gran Piedra, one of the most important national monuments in the country. It is registered in the Guinness Book of Records as the highest rock of its dimensions in the world, standing at 1,234 meters above sea level and ranking as the third largest. Situated along the southern coast of the Sierra Maestra sub-region, reaching the summit requires climbing 452 steps amidst a dense fog, which ensures a pleasant temperature.

The Great Stone measures 51 meters in length and is between 25 and 30 meters wide, with a weight close to 63,000 tons. It is designated as a Protected Natural Landscape of the nation and serves as one of the greatest attractions within the Great Sierra Maestra National Park.

Experts believe that the emergence of the Great Stone was conditioned by the eruption of a submarine volcano. It has now become a lookout point offering breathtaking views of the natural landscape. Some claim that on clear nights, one can even see the lights of Jamaica.

The flora and fauna in the region exhibit a high degree of endemism, with sixty-two species of trees and eleven animal species. A unique microclimate allows for the existence of 222 varieties of ferns, as well as orchids, eucalyptus, cypresses, fruit trees, woodpeckers, thrushes, cartacubas, mayitos, and the tocororo, Cuba's national bird.

July in Santiago de Cuba means enjoying the Caribbean Festival and as soon as this great celebration ends, it is time to discover the multiple attractions in the hot land, which welcomes visitors with warmth and joy. Three days are not enough, it is a territory that deserves to be visited again and again. This fascinating city is full of charms, hence this proposal of must-see sites in the most Caribbean of Cuban cities.

Día 1: La magia de una ciudad

En el centro santiaguero se extiende el icónico Parque Céspedes, excelente punto de partida para recorrer un enclave que fusiona cultura, patrimonio, historia y tradición. Esta plaza irradia la alegría de su gente y la belleza impresionante del lugar y las emblemáticas edificaciones que lo rodean. En este sentido, allí se alza imponente la Catedral de Santiago de Cuba, majestuosa en su arquitectura y estilo neoclásico, luce dos torres admirables y acoge una maravillosa colección de arte sacro. Asimismo, se emplaza la Casa de Diego Velázquez, considerada la de mayor antigüedad de su tipo en Cuba. La que fuera residencia del conquistador español, constituye una legendaria joya arquitectónica y es hoy el Museo de Ambiente Histórico.

In this sense, the Cathedral of Santiago de Cuba rises imposingly there, majestic in its architecture and neoclassical style, it has two admirable towers and houses a wonderful collection of sacred art. It also has the House of Diego Velázquez, considered the oldest of its kind in Cuba. The former residence of the Spanish conqueror is a legendary architectural jewel and is today the Museum of Historical Environment.

Santiago holds the distinction of Creative City of Music, rhythms are present in every corner, so it is essential to get to a place where the sounds gladden the soul: the Casa de la Trova "Pepe Sánchez", a place par excellence to enjoy this genre and good Cuban music.

Quien llega a la oriental provincia precisa visitar el Santuario Nacional de Nuestra Señora de la Caridad del Cobre. Desde las alturas y en un entorno de exuberante belleza natural, se erige la hermosa basílica que guarda la imagen de la Virgen. Sitio de leyendas, misticismo y peregrinación en torno a la Patrona de Cuba. Visitantes de todos los lugares llegan al famoso altar de “Cachita” para conocer su imagen, agradecerle o pedirle con mucha fe. Una vez en el mítico poblado de El Cobre, encanta visitar el Monumento al Cimarrón, impresionante obra del artista Alberto Lescay. Desde la cúspide, se observan las encantadoras vistas del paisaje y la deslumbrante tonalidad de la Laguna Azul.

Day 2: Sunflowers to "Cachita".

Travelers who arrive in the eastern province must visit the National Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de la Caridad del Cobre. From the heights and in an environment of exuberant natural beauty, stands the beautiful basilica that houses the image of the Virgin. It is a place of legends, mysticism and pilgrimage around the Patroness of Cuba. Visitors from all over the world come to the famous altar of "Cachita" to see her image, thank her or pray to her with great faith.

Day 3: Glimpse of paradise from the heights

More than 400 steps make up the path to La Gran Piedra, an amazing natural viewpoint of the region. At the summit, a gigantic rock rewards with the most spectacular views of the southeastern coast of Santiago, the surrounding mountain range and part of the sublime city. It is a unique landscape in Cuba and the Caribbean that attracts hikers for its beauty and the diversity of its flora and fauna.

The album consists of ten songs that invite listeners to revisit memorable pieces from Cuba´s national sound heritage, interpreted with the soulful and infinite talent of this prominent musician. Santiago de Cuba's Musical Cathedral

La Casa de la Trova Pepe Sánchez es un sagrado recinto colmado de melodías y del espíritu de esa plaza oriental Declarada Ciudad Creativa en el ámbito de la música por la UNESCO en el año 2021.

En esta morada, ubicada en la calle Heredia, a pocos metros del concurrido Parque Céspedes, nació el compositor Rafael Pascual Salcedo de las Cuevas (1844-1917), maestro de muchas generaciones, cuyo legado incluye relevantes piezas de música de concierto.

En el siglo XX, el inmueble albergó varios comercios, uno de ellos propiedad del tabaquero Virgilio Palais, donde se reunían juglares de diferentes barrios santiagueros por lo que fue conocido como El Cafetín de Virgilio, tradición de gran arraigo que determinó que en 1986 se convirtiera en La Casa

The Casa de la Trova Pepe Sanchez is a sacred precinct filled with melodies and the spirit of that eastern square, declared a Creative City in the field of music by UNESCO in 2021.

The composer Rafael Pascual Salcedo de las Cuevas (1844-1917), a master of many generations whose legacy includes relevant pieces of concert music, was born in this house located on Heredia Street, a few meters from the bustling Céspedes Park.

In the 20th century, the building housed several stores, one of which was owned by the cigar-maker Virgilio Palais, where minstrels from different neighborhoods of Santiago used to gather. This is why it was known as El Cafetín de Virgilio, a deep-rooted tradition that led to its transformation into La Casa de la Trova Pepe Sánchez (Pepe Sánchez Trova House) in 1986.

La Casa de la Trova, recibe siempre al viajero con lo más autóctono de la música tradicional cubana; a solo unos pasos de la Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, se encuentra esta, considerada por muchos, la Catedral Musical de Santiago de Cuba.

La Casa de la Trova always welcomes travelers with the most authentic Cuban traditional music, just a few steps from the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption. It is considered by many to be the Musical Cathedral of Santiago de Cuba.

En las instalaciones turísticas cubanas y otras unidades de servicio, los precios están fijados en pesos cubanos (CUP). Se aceptan las tarjetas de crédito siempre que NO sean emitidas por bancos estadounidenses ni sus sucursales en otros países.

El visitante a nuestro país debe poseer un pasaporte vigente y la correspondiente visa o Tarjeta de Turista. Se exceptúan los países con los que Cuba mantiene convenios de libre visado. Las Tarjetas de Turista pueden solicitarse antes las representaciones consulares cubanas. También en las agencias de viajes y líneas aéreas.

Al llegar a la aduana, se entiende por turista aquella persona no residente permanentemente en el país, independientemente de su nacionalidad, que entre al mismo por razones de placer, negocio, salud, deporte, por un período mayor de 24 horas y menor de 6 meses.

Los turistas podrán importar sus efectos personales, los que entran al país como una admisión temporal; libres del pago de derecho de aduanas y deben ser reexportados a su salida.

EL TURISTA PUEDE EXPORTAR: Hasta veinte (20) unidades de tabaco torcido sueltos, sin necesidad de presentar ningún documento. Hasta cincuenta ( 50) unidades de tabaco torcido, con la condición que estén contenidos en el envases originales, cerrado, sellado y con el holograma oficial establecido, exigencias sin las cuales no se autoriza la exportación.

Cantidad en exceso de cincuenta (50) unidades de tabaco torcido, las cuales no pueden exceder el valor de los 5,000.00 CUC, deben presentar la factura de venta oficial expedida por la red de tiendas autorizadas a comercializar tabacos torcidos cubanos, correspondiente a todo el tabaco torcido que intenten extraer y que necesariamente tiene que estar contenidos en envases originales, cerrados y sellados y con el holograma oficial establecido. Las cantidades de tabaco torcido en exceso de las cincuentas (50) unidades que no sea declarado por el viajero y cualquier cantidad que exceda lo declarado, o que habiéndose declarado no se acredite su adquisición lícita mediante la factura de venta oficial o los envases no posean los atributos y demás exigencias que lo identifican como tabaco torcido cubano, dará lugar al decomiso.

De igual forma podrá llevar hasta 3 botellas de licor y 200 cigarrillos, souvenirs o recuerdos de su estancia en el país.

Visitors entering the Island must have a valid updated passport as well as a visa or tourist card, except for nationals of countries holding visa exemptions treaties with Cuba. Tourism cards are issued by Cuban consular offices as well as travel agencies and airlines

As far as Cuban Customs, a tourist is understood as a non-permanent resident in the country, regardless of his nationality, entering the country for leisure, business and health or sports purposes for more than 24 hours and less than six months.

TOURISTS MAY EXPORT:
