Santiago de Cuba's Musical Cathedral
La Casa de la Trova Pepe Sánchez es un sagrado recinto colmado de melodías y del espíritu de esa plaza oriental Declarada Ciudad Creativa en el ámbito de la música por la UNESCO en el año 2021.
En esta morada, ubicada en la calle Heredia, a pocos metros del concurrido Parque Céspedes, nació el compositor Rafael Pascual Salcedo de las Cuevas (1844-1917), maestro de muchas generaciones, cuyo legado incluye relevantes piezas de música de concierto.
En el siglo XX, el inmueble albergó varios comercios, uno de ellos propiedad del tabaquero Virgilio Palais, donde se reunían juglares de diferentes barrios santiagueros por lo que fue conocido como El Cafetín de Virgilio, tradición de gran arraigo que determinó que en 1986 se convirtiera en La Casa
The Casa de la Trova Pepe Sanchez is a sacred precinct filled with melodies and the spirit of that eastern square, declared a Creative City in the field of music by UNESCO in 2021.
The composer Rafael Pascual Salcedo de las Cuevas (1844-1917), a master of many generations whose legacy includes relevant pieces of concert music, was born in this house located on Heredia Street, a few meters from the bustling Céspedes Park.
In the 20th century, the building housed several stores, one of which was owned by the cigar-maker Virgilio Palais, where minstrels from different neighborhoods of Santiago used to gather. This is why it was known as El Cafetín de Virgilio, a deep-rooted tradition that led to its transformation into La Casa de la Trova Pepe Sánchez (Pepe Sánchez Trova House) in 1986.
La herencia cultural de Santiago de Cuba, cuna de la Trova, el Bolero, y el Son; sitio del arte coral y la conga callejera con su corneta china y sus tumbadoras, se manifiesta en esta legendaria institución donde han ofrecido su arte, las más grandes glorias del pentagrama nacional: Miguel Matamoros, Ñico Saquito, Compay Segundo, Ibrahim Ferrer, Eliades Ochoa, Elena Burke, Omara Portuondo, y Adalberto Álvarez, entre otros muchos. También figuras internacionales han sucumbido al embrujo de esta casa: Víctor Jara, Gabriel García Márquez, Mario Benedetti, Oscar de León, Andy Montañés, Harry Belafonte y el exintegrante de Los Beatles, Paul McCartney, cuyas firmas se atesoran en las paredes, en recuerdo de sus entrañables visitas.
La Casa de la Trova, recibe siempre al viajero con lo más autóctono de la música tradicional cubana; a solo unos pasos de la Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, se encuentra esta, considerada por muchos, la Catedral Musical de Santiago de Cuba.

Their signatures are cherished on the walls as a tribute to their beloved visits.
La Casa de la Trova always welcomes travelers with the most authentic Cuban traditional music, just a few steps from the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption. It is considered by many to be the Musical Cathedral of Santiago de Cuba.
