Julio en Santiago de Cuba supone disfrutar del Festival del Caribe y cuando esta gran fiesta culmine, es tiempo de descubrir la multiplicidad de atractivos de la tierra caliente, que con calidez y alegría da la bienvenida. Tres días no bastan, es un territorio que amerita revisitarlo siempre. Y es que la ciudad fascinante está llena de encantos, de ahí esta propuesta de sitios imperdibles en la más caribeña de las urbes cubanas.

Three days in Santiago de Cuba

July in Santiago de Cuba means enjoying the Caribbean Festival and as soon as this great celebration ends, it is time to discover the multiple attractions in the hot land, which welcomes visitors with warmth and joy. Three days are not enough, it is a territory that deserves to be visited again and again. This fascinating city is full of charms, hence this proposal of must-see sites in the most Caribbean of Cuban cities.

Día 1: La magia de una ciudad

En el centro santiaguero se extiende el icónico Parque Céspedes, excelente punto de partida para recorrer un enclave que fusiona cultura, patrimonio, historia y tradición. Esta plaza irradia la alegría de su gente y la belleza impresionante del lugar y las emblemáticas edificaciones que lo rodean. En este sentido, allí se alza imponente la Catedral de Santiago de Cuba, majestuosa en su arquitectura y estilo neoclásico, luce dos torres admirables y acoge una maravillosa colección de arte sacro. Asimismo, se emplaza la Casa de Diego Velázquez, considerada la de mayor antigüedad de su tipo en Cuba. La que fuera residencia del conquistador español, constituye una legendaria joya arquitectónica y es hoy el Museo de Ambiente Histórico.

Santiago ostenta la distinción de Ciudad Creativa de la Música, los ritmos están presentes en cada rincón, por ello resulta imprescindible llegar a un espacio donde las sonoridades alegran el alma: la Casa de la Trova “Pepe Sánchez”, lugar por excelencia para disfrutar de este género y de la buena música cubana.

Recorrer la ciudad es enamorarse de sus hermosas calles y espacios, conectar con el espíritu de los lugareños y la esencia de un sitio multicultural. En este afán, emociona visitar el barrio El Tivolí, ascender la famosa escalinata de Padre Pico y encontrar un entorno pintoresco donde se funden sincretismos culturales, se danza la patrimonial Tumba Francesa y desde las calles empinadas se disfruta de una maravillosa vista al mar.

Day 1: The magic of a city

In downtown Santiago, the iconic Céspedes Park is an excellent starting point to tour an enclave that combines culture, heritage, history and tradition. This square radiates the joy of its people and the impressive beauty of the place and the emblematic buildings that surround it. In this sense, the Cathedral of Santiago de Cuba rises imposingly there, majestic in its architecture and neoclassical style, it has two admirable towers and houses a wonderful collection of sacred art. It also has the House of Diego Velázquez, considered the oldest of its kind in Cuba. The former residence of the Spanish conqueror is a legendary architectural jewel and is today the Museum of Historical Environment.

Santiago holds the distinction of Creative City of Music, rhythms are present in every corner, so it is essential to get to a place where the sounds gladden the soul: the Casa de la Trova "Pepe Sánchez", a place par excellence to enjoy this genre and good Cuban music.

To tour the city means to fall in love with its beautiful streets and spaces, to connect with the spirit of the locals and the essence of a multicultural place. In this eagerness, it is exciting to visit the El Tivolí neighborhood, climb the famous Padre Pico staircase and find a picturesque environment where cultural syncretisms merge, the patrimonial French Tomb is danced and from the steep streets you can enjoy a wonderful view of the sea.

Día 2: Girasoles a “Cachita”

Quien llega a la oriental provincia precisa visitar el Santuario Nacional de Nuestra Señora de la Caridad del Cobre. Desde las alturas y en un entorno de exuberante belleza natural, se erige la hermosa basílica que guarda la imagen de la Virgen. Sitio de leyendas, misticismo y peregrinación en torno a la Patrona de Cuba. Visitantes de todos los lugares llegan al famoso altar de “Cachita” para conocer su imagen, agradecerle o pedirle con mucha fe. Una vez en el mítico poblado de El Cobre, encanta visitar el Monumento al Cimarrón, impresionante obra del artista Alberto Lescay. Desde la cúspide, se observan las encantadoras vistas del paisaje y la deslumbrante tonalidad de la Laguna Azul.

Day 2: Sunflowers to "Cachita".

Travelers who arrive in the eastern province must visit the National Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de la Caridad del Cobre. From the heights and in an environment of exuberant natural beauty, stands the beautiful basilica that houses the image of the Virgin. It is a place of legends, mysticism and pilgrimage around the Patroness of Cuba. Visitors from all over the world come to the famous altar of "Cachita" to see her image, thank her or pray to her with great faith.

Once in the mythical town of El Cobre, it is a delight to visit the Monument to the Cimarrón, an impressive work of the artist Alberto Lescay. From the top of the monument, you can observe the enchanting views of the landscape and the dazzling color of the Blue Lagoon.

Día 3: Vislumbrar el paraíso desde las alturas

Más de 400 escalones conforman el camino a La Gran Piedra, asombroso mirador natural de la región. En la cumbre, una gigantesca roca premia con las más espectaculares vistas del litoral suroriental de Santiago, la cordillera circundante y parte de la sublime urbe. Conforma un paisaje único en Cuba y el Caribe que atrae a amantes del excursionismo por su belleza y la diversidad de su flora y fauna.

Day 3: Glimpse of paradise from the heights

More than 400 steps make up the path to La Gran Piedra, an amazing natural viewpoint of the region. At the summit, a gigantic rock rewards with the most spectacular views of the southeastern coast of Santiago, the surrounding mountain range and part of the sublime city. It is a unique landscape in Cuba and the Caribbean that attracts hikers for its beauty and the diversity of its flora and fauna.
