Welcome to the Autumn edition of our Quarterly Business Magazine

And just like that, Summer is behind us. Some people say that it can be a quiet season, but that certainly hasn’t been the case for the Chamber! It has been a brilliant few months of supporting members, engaging with the community and ensuring that we’ve represented your thoughts and opinions at a variety of meetings.

I was delighted to attend the British Chambers of Commerce’s Annual Conference in June which focused on "Where's the Growth?". It was a jam-packed day with keynote speeches from Prime Minister Rt Hon Sir Keir Starmer and the Rt Hon Kemi Badenoch MP, it really hits home the impact the Chamber network and its members have on the business landscape across the UK.

As always, we are keen to hear from you if there are any challenges that you are facing or if there is any support that your business needs. Please do reach out to the team on 01244 669988 or email info@wcnwchamber.org.uk.

We now turn our attention to the upcoming Annual Ball & Recognition Awards which takes place on Friday 14th November.

It always amazes me how quickly it seems to come around and by the time you are reading this, it will be less than two months until the big night at Chester Racecourse. It was brilliant to see so many nominations for the awards from members and to hear your success stories over the last year, in a challenging economic climate, has been truly inspirational. There are so many fantastic organisations in our community and we are really looking forward to celebrating with you in November. You can read more about the event on the next page.

As the children return to school and you’re focusing all your efforts on the last few months of the year, I just wanted to highlight our Maximising Your Membership events that take place online once a month.

These are a brilliant way to have a refresh of the support available to you as a member to ensure you get maximum value out of your membership with us as we head to 2026. Have a look on our website for upcoming dates.

I wish you all the success in the next few months and hope to see many of you at the Awards evening in November.

WCNW Chamber strikes Gold!

West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce is delighted to announce that we've received the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Awardthe highest standard of recognition for employers who demonstrate outstanding support for the Armed Forces community.

The Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award is presented by the Ministry of Defence to organisations that go above and beyond in their commitment to those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, as well as their families. To achieve this level of recognition, employers must not only advocate for the Armed Forces Covenant, but also provide demonstrable and practical support through policies, initiatives, and engagement opportunities.

For the Chamber, this recognition is far more than a badge of honour - it reflects years of dedicated effort to ensure that the Armed Forces community is represented, supported, and celebrated across the business landscape of West Cheshire and North Wales.

Supporting the Armed Forces community is something we’re incredibly passionate about at the Chamber as we’re proud to have had veterans serve on our Board of Directors, as well as providing speaking opportunities to Reserve Forces' & Cadets' Association For Wales. The Chamber also hosts an annual networking event at the 3rd Battalion Royal Welsh’s barracks in Colwyn Bay to help raise awareness of the benefits businesses can gain from engaging with the Armed Forces and employing veterans.

As Strategic partners since 2019, Defence Relationship Management (through RFCA For Wales) enjoy a mutually beneficial and supportive arrangement with the Chamber, and we look forward to further strengthening the links going forward.”

Sarah Bailey, Chief Executive Officer of West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce, added: “Receiving the Gold Award is a real milestone for the Chamber. It reflects not just our policies, but also the actions that we’ve taken to make sure that the Armed Forces community is recognised and supported within our business network. This recognition also underlines the value that veterans, reservists, and their

families bring to local employers - skills, experience, and perspectives that strengthen businesses of every size. We’re proud to play a part in encouraging more organisations to see the benefits of engaging with the Armed Forces Covenant.

“We’re honoured to be recognised alongside so many outstanding organisations across the United Kingdom, including two Chamber members, Deeside-based expert distributors, Farrall's Group and Chester-based HR specialists, Wurkplace Limited.”

Sarah continued: “We’re proud of this achievement, but our commitment doesn’t stop here. The Chamber will continue to champion the Armed Forces Covenant, create opportunities for veterans and reservists in business, and shine a spotlight on the transferable skills and value they bring to the workplace.”

Introducing our sister company HF Owen Transport and Storage Ltd into the Chamber

Delivery Solutions (Delsol) Ltd have great pleasure in introducing Bangor-based HF Owen to the rapidly expanding Chamber membership.

Founded in 1972 as a traditional haulier, HF Owen became a subsidiary of the Delsol group in 2019 and has embraced change and grown year on year ever since.

Geraint Walker became MD in 2024, having previously been the Transport Manager for the business. He was instrumental in introducing a major change in July of 2023 when HF Owen became the member representing Gwynedd in the Pallet Track network, which opened opportunities for new and existing customers to have UK-wide network pallet deliveries done on time,

every time! Meanwhile, the traditional haulage side of the business has become increasingly busy as connections with Irish companies via Holyhead port have been encouraged and our reputation for quality and service has been recognised. That recognition was cemented in February this year at the annual Pallet Track Awards, where HF Owen swept the board scooping three awards in the UK-wide network, not bad for a fairly new depot in rural North Wales!

“We’re really pleased to be joining the Chamber of Commerce. As a logistics company with deep roots in the region and a proud member of the Pallet-Track network, we understand the value of strong business connections, both locally and nationally. Being recognised with awards like ‘Best Use of Technology’ has reinforced our belief in the power of innovation and collaboration. We’re looking forward to working with fellow members to share ideas, support one

another, and keep the region’s supply chains moving.” Geraint Walker, HF Owen.

“Delsol has been a proud member of the Chamber for approaching two years and was overwhelmed to be award finalists last year. This year, we introduced Delsol International, our start-up import and export business, to the Chamber, and I am delighted to welcome our sister company HF Owen Transport & Storage Ltd as a new member. We are looking to strengthen local connections and form partnerships with other like-minded businesses across the region.” Kathy Jones, Group Chief Executive.

Both Kathy and Geraint are extremely excited about HF Owen joining the Chamber and getting to know the excellent businesses that meet on a regular basis. In transport, connections are vital for growth and understanding the importance of the local community.

This summer is expected to have been the busiest ever for Liverpool John Lennon Airport, with more travellers from across the North West and North Wales choosing to fly from the region’s awardwinning airport.

With flights to over 70 destinations, including new services this year to Egypt and Croatia, the airport believes passenger numbers will exceed the previous highest summer season, back in 2011.

2024 saw the airport return to pre-covid passenger numbers for the first time and the airport is expecting passenger growth to continue throughout 2025 as it now closes in on its highest ever annual throughput of just over 5.5m passengers back in 2007.

In recent years, the airport has won national recognition for its passenger experience, winning various customer service-related awards with travellers from across the North West and North Wales making Liverpool their airport of choice. However, in order to maintain

this status, it has been important to further enhance various facilities for travellers using the airport with a multi-million pound programme of works carried out over the past two winter seasons and completed in time for this year’s Summer season. This has seen the introduction of new food and beverage units and the refurbishment of existing facilities, to create an even wider choice of options for passengers.

The final piece of the jigsaw will be the opening of the new Aspire Executive Lounge that will be over three times the floor space of the existing facility and

able to cater for twice as many guests with space for over 200 when it opens this Autumn.

Combining these improvements with the installation earlier this year of the latest generation security equipment so that liquids and large electrical items can remain in hand luggage, is helping Liverpool to remain the region’s faster, easier, friendlier airport of choice.

Following the successful completion of her Apprenticeship, Harriet Cooke has been promoted to HR Consultant. She is joined by Amy Cox, who brings experience from manufacturing and construction. Izzy Francis has also been appointed Apprentice HR Consultant after completing her work experience programme with the company. Managing Director, Niamh Kelly, commented, “These appointments

bring us valuable insight and expertise, reflecting our continued commitment to excellence in HR consultancy. We look forward to the positive impact our team will make to the challenges our clients face – particularly with the publication of the new Employment Rights Bill in late Autumn.”

Bathgate hits £5 million in capital lending from its own book

Bathgate Business Finance has hit a landmark £5 million in capital lending from its own funding book, The Bathgate Capital Fund, the highest in the company’s 34-year history.

The milestone highlights considerable growth from September 2022, when its book reduced to £1.5 million as businesses turned to governmentbacked finance solutions in the wake of the pandemic.

During this period, the West Kirby-based finance specialist has also seen three months where its own-book lending has hit £1 million, in October 2022, June 2024 and again in March 2025.

Own-book lending is finance that is written from Bathgate’s own capital base, allowing it to make its own decisions without the need for lengthy processes and credit committees.

While most own-book funders focus on

specialist areas, Bathgate offers a wide range of finance solutions from their capital base, which is not common in the marketplace.

The recipients were:

• Active4Blood

• Andy Swan Driver Services Ltd

• Bulldogs Boxing & Community Activities

• Cobra Life Martial Arts Ltd

• Events Medical Team - Saltney Ltd

• Henry Williams and Son (Roads) Ltd

• Platts Group

• Riverside Retreat Veterans Camp CIC

• Shadow Response Security & Medical Ltd

• The Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum Trust

• Business in Focus Ltd

• IG Doors Ltd

• MPH Construction

• Powys Teaching Health Board

• R&M Williams Ltd

• V3 Group (UK) Ltd

• Bridgend College

Gordon Andrews, MD at Bathgate Business Finance, said: “Growth of The Bathgate Capital Fund was an objective for the business after covid. We have our own capital base, and we want to lend our money into local communities and to SMEs, who may often be overlooked.

“Having our own book funding means we have the choice and ability to lend to a much wider range of businesses. We can move quicker to make decisions,

and ensure that the money gets to the client faster too.

“We have expertise in working in local communities and with SMEs, as well as regional understanding that informs our decision making. This means that we can offer finance solutions that might be too niche, small or complex for other funders.”

Their primary mission is to support the safety and resilience of local businesses by offering expert guidance, free advice, and educational resources aimed at reducing the risk of fire and protecting lives, property, and livelihoods.

The team offers a wide range of free fire safety advice to business owners, landlords, managers, and responsible persons under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. This includes

practical guidance on completing fire risk assessments, identifying, and managing hazards, and ensuring that fire detection and warning systems, escape routes, and emergency procedures are in place and effective. In addition to advice, the team delivers education and support through workshops, webinars, and on-site visits, helping business leaders build confidence in their fire safety responsibilities. Can my website work harder for my business?

In a world where most customers search online before they buy, your website isn’t just a digital brochure — it’s your hardest-working employee. It’s on the job 24/7, greeting visitors, answering questions, showcasing your successes, and encouraging people to take action. Yet many business websites sit idle, doing the bare minimum. If yours is one of them, you could be missing valuable opportunities to build trust, generate leads, and strengthen your brand.

The good news? With some strategic thinking and a few practical tweaks, your website can start pulling more weight for your business — regardless of your industry.

Why your website matters more than ever

Think of your website as the hub of your marketing activity. Social media, email campaigns, networking, and advertising all drive people to one place: your site. It’s where they decide whether they like you, trust you, and want to do business with you.

A professional-looking site that’s easy to navigate and full of valuable, relevant content tells visitors, “We’re credible. We care. We know what we’re doing.” Conversely, a poorly designed or outdated site can undermine your credibility faster than you can say “broken link.”

In short, your website is often the first impression people get of your business — and sometimes, it’s the only one you’ll get to make.

Ten essentials every business website should have

1. Clear, concise messaging – Visitors should understand who you are, what you do, and why you’re different within seconds of landing on your homepage. Avoid jargon and focus on benefits, not just features.

2. Professional, up-to-date design –First impressions count. A clean, modern layout with consistent branding shows you take your business seriously. Mobile responsiveness is non-negotiable.

3. Easy-to-find contact information –Make it simple for customers to reach you. Include your phone number, email,

address (if applicable), and a contact form. Bonus points for live chat support.

4. Strong calls to action (CTAs) –Tell visitors exactly what to do next: “Book a consultation,” “Download our guide,” or “Order now.” Make CTAs prominent and persuasive.

5. Customer testimonials and reviews –Real feedback from happy clients builds trust and provides social proof. Include names, photos, and company details if possible for added authenticity.

6. Case studies or portfolio – Show your work, your results, and your successes. Use before-and-after examples, metrics, and client stories to make an impact.

7. Fresh, relevant content – Keep your site alive with regular updates. Blog posts, news stories, or helpful tips demonstrate expertise and improve search engine rankings.

8. About page with personality –People do business with people. Share your story, your mission, and the team behind the brand to create an emotional connection.

9. Trust signals and credentials –Display accreditations, awards, industry memberships, and security certificates to reassure visitors they’re in safe hands.

10. Optimised for speed and SEO –

A slow site frustrates visitors and loses sales. Ensure your site loads quickly, works smoothly, and is optimised for search engines so people can actually find you. Turning visitors into customers

Having all the right elements in place is one thing; using them strategically is another. Your site should guide visitors

on a journey — from casual browsing to genuine interest to taking action. That means making it effortless for them to find the information they need, reassuring them at every step, and removing barriers to conversion.

A visitor might read your About page, scan your testimonials, browse your portfolio, and then decide to get in touch — or they might go straight to your contact form from the homepage. Either way, the experience should feel intuitive and seamless.

Think of your site as a conversation with a potential customer. Every word, image, and button should help answer their unspoken questions:

• Can I trust you?

• Do you understand my problem?

• Can you solve it?

• What’s my next step?

Measuring and improving performance

Your website should never be “finished.” It’s a living, evolving asset that can be tested, refined, and improved over time. Track your analytics to see which pages are most popular, where visitors drop off, and what drives the most conversions. Small changes — such as tweaking a headline, adding a testimonial, or simplifying a form — can make a big difference to results.

The bottom line

Your website is more than just an online presence; it’s a tool that can actively drive sales, strengthen your brand, and turn casual visitors into loyal customers. By including the right elements, keeping it fresh, and focusing on the user experience, you can transform it from a passive placeholder into a powerful business engine.

In today’s competitive marketplace, you can’t afford for your website to sit quietly in the background. Make it work harder for you — because the businesses that invest in their online presence are the ones most likely to thrive.

Community spirit on the green

The Ellis & Co Annual Golf Day 2025, held on July 10th at the picturesque Pryors Hayes Golf Course in Chester, was a resounding success. The event, played in a Texas Scramble format, fostered friendly competition and camaraderie among participants. More importantly,

it served as a powerful platform to support and raise crucial funds for The Hospice of the Good Shepherd, a cherished local charity.

Overall, the day was filled with brilliant golfing highlights and sunny weather, including a warm welcome and tailored gift bags that contained refreshments, Ellis & Co golf balls and their latest 2025/26 tax card. It concluded with an award ceremony and a successful charity collection and raffle, which further boosted contributions to the Hospice. Thus, underscoring the strong community spirit championed by Ellis & Co.

Empowering the next generation of businesses

As industry experts, the team at Ellis & Co are also dedicated to sharing their knowledge to foster growth within the business community. Your guide to a seamless audit

Additionally, in their ongoing effort to simplify complex financial processes, the team have released a free, comprehensive Audit Checklist. Designed

"Think of it as a health checkup for your business—an opportunity to refine processes, identify opportunities and strengthen stakeholder confidence. By being 'audit-ready' at all times, it means you'll be running a more efficient, transparent and resilient operation yearround. And at Ellis & Co, we believe in making this process constructive, not disruptive."

With this checklist, users will be guided through essential steps, from embracing digital record-keeping and meticulously tracking income and expenses, to maintaining detailed payroll and HR records, and formalising internal controls for larger corporations. It offers universal best practices applicable to everyone, along with specific guidance for SMEs, self-employed individuals and larger businesses. This resource aims to turn your next audit into your smoothest yet, allowing businesses to achieve complete peace of mind.

To download your free Audit Checklist and take the first step towards perfect financial record-keeping, visit the Ellis & Co website at www.ellis-uk.com.

Whether it's through fostering community spirit, sharing expert insights or providing essential resources, Ellis & Co continues to demonstrate their commitment to supporting businesses and individuals across Chester, Wrexham and beyond.

Acclaimed planning consultancy is looking to the future with a new face at the helm following a period of growth

Cadnant Planning, based in Conwy and Pulford, near Wrexham and Chester, is one of the industry’s most respected firms. With Associate Planner Sioned Edwards stepping up to become Managing Director, the future looks bright for the award-winning chartered town planning consultancy.

Their talented team of six has worked with a raft of big names on landmark projects including infrastructure developments, leisure operators, further education providers, landowners, commercial developers and leading private housebuilders and RSLs.

Alongside Founder and Director Rhys Davies, who launched the business 20 years ago before rebranding to become Cadnant Planning in 2012, Sioned is excited to focus on supporting existing and new clients across North Wales, Cheshire, Wirral and the North West.

“Together we have built up the reputation and client base of the company, and nothing will change from that perspective, but we have taken a long-term view in terms of the future of Cadnant, and I am very excited to step forward into this new role,” she said. Rhys added: “I will still be a Director and integral part of the business but it’s about looking ahead now, with Sioned leading on that vision and our long-term strategy.”

Providing a wide range of services from planning appraisals, applications, appeals and specialist documents to

land promotion and expert witness representation, the firm is proud of its Welsh roots and “local values” centred on sustainability, bilingualism and opportunities for the next generation.

Sioned joined the practice as a graduate 13 years ago and is determined to build on its history while embracing technological and legislative advances. Rhys, from Anglesey, says the business is in “very safe hands.” He added: “From this point it will be Sioned driving things forward. I am delighted for her and know Cadnant Planning will continue to go from strength to strength.”

Petty Pool’s award-winning Neuroinclusion Summit returns to champion neurodiversity in the workplace

Petty Pool, a leading specialist college for young people with learning disabilities and difficulties, has taken another bold step towards building a neuroinclusive future with the successful delivery of its second annual Neuroinclusion Summit, following last year’s award-winning inaugural event.

Held on 3rd July at Chester Racecourse, the summit brought together employers, leaders, and HR professionals, along with neurodivergent young people to explore practical solutions for improving pathways into employment for those with learning disabilities and neurodivergence. The day featured keynote speakers including Alex Partridge, founder of LADBible and UniLAD, and host of the ADHD Chatter Podcast, panel discussions led by lived experience voices and employers already modelling inclusion at work, and sessions offering practical advice on inclusive recruitment, sensoryfriendly workplaces, and other easy-toimplement adaptations.

A highlight of the day was the contributions from Petty Pool catering and hospitality learners, who demonstrated their employability skills, serving lunch and refreshments, alongside the Horseradish Team.

Sally Garratt, CEO of Petty Pool, said: “Following the success of last year’s award-winning event, it has been

incredible to see our Neuroinclusion Summit grow in ambition and impact. The barriers faced by neurodivergent young people are significant, but we are seeing that with collaboration and commitment, meaningful change is possible. We are determined to keep pushing for a neuroinclusive future where every young person can thrive.”

Wendy Bowyer, Deputy CEO of Petty Pool, added:

“This summit was about action, not just awareness. Our learners led the way in showing what true inclusion looks like, and I’m confident that the delegates who attended will have been inspired to create action in their own organisations.”

Nadia McKane, Head of Marketing and Fundraising at Petty Pool, said:

“Seeing so many employers, leaders, and professionals come together for this second summit shows there is a collective appetite for change. We are ready to support organisations who want to take practical steps to make neuroinclusive employment a reality.”

At the College’s three campuses, students gathered with friends, family and tutors to celebrate their results and reflect on their achievements.

“It’s a privilege to celebrate the achievements of the class of 2025,” said Principal and CEO Jasbir Dhesi OBE. “They’ve worked incredibly hard and today is about recognising not only what they have accomplished but also the exciting futures that lie ahead.”

Students from the College’s campuses in Ellesmere Port, Chester and Crewe have excelled.

Students on BTEC programmes have received results in key sectors including Health, Engineering, Science, and Digital, securing a remarkable pass rate of 98.2% and with an impressive 47.1% achieving top Distinction grades in their qualification.

Many students are now preparing to take up places at universities across the UK, including Russell Group institutions, or starting apprenticeships and entering the world of work.

Student Lilia Vernon achieved a grade A in the T Level in Education and Childcare at the Ellesmere Port Campus and is now preparing to go to university.

Reflecting on her achievement, she said, “My experience at Cheshire College was an exciting chapter in my education and I’m so pleased to have the grade to move on to my next step of studying primary education at Liverpool John Moores.”

Among the students celebrating is Daniel, who achieved AAA* in A Level English Language, Psychology and Sociology. He commented: “I’ll be going to the University of Manchester to study Psychology. “Their results reflect not only academic achievement,” Dhesi added, “but also the resilience, adaptability and determination they’ve shown throughout their time with us. We are immensely proud of every learner and look forward to seeing where their next steps take them.”

As students embark on their next steps, the College is encouraging them to stay connected by joining the Alumni Community. By signing up at Alumni Community - Cheshire College South & West, former students can continue to access support from the College and its Careers Team, stay informed about opportunities, and return to campus to inspire the next generation of students. Sales Club: Changing the way the region perceives sales

In an increasingly competitive world with buyer choice and information overload, selling has never been tougher or more essential. That’s why Sales Club, a quarterly sales training event in partnership the West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce, is helping local businesses level up their sales skills in a practical, real-world way.

Whether you’re a solo entrepreneur trying to win your first big client, or part of an established sales team looking for fresh energy and ideas, Sales Club offers a supportive space to learn, reflect, and improve hopefully without the jargon, ego, or pressure!

The idea for Sales Club was sparked by a simple realisation: too many businesses are great at what they do, but struggle to sell it. As a sales leader and sales trainer working across a range of sectors, I kept seeing the same thing — talented professionals with the potential to grow, but lacking confidence, structure, or upto-date skills in selling.

Rather than offer one-off training or generic workshops, I wanted to create something ongoing and accessible — a place where local businesses could not only sharpen their skills and network but also build a community of like-minded people all facing the same challenges. With the Chamber’s support and after a few conversations, Sales Club was born and about to enter its 3rd year!

So, what is Sales Club?

Every quarter, Chamber members from across the region come together for a 3-hour session focused on a specific aspect of selling. Each session blends practical tools with group discussion and reflection and gives the attendees an opportunity to network with other professionals.

Topics have ranged from handling objections and value-based selling to pipeline management, follow-up strategies, and understanding buyer psychology. Every session is built to be hands-on, interactive, and full of actionable takeaways you can apply the very next day.

There’s no “death by PowerPoint” here (hopefully!) just honest, open conversations about what works, what doesn’t, and how to get better. And because it’s a recurring event, attendees get to track their own progress over time, building both skill and confidence.

The feedback so far has been overwhelmingly positive. Attendees consistently highlight the down-toearth tone, the practical value, and the benefit of learning alongside peers from diverse businesses from across the region. Recently we've encouraged other members such as Rhian Anstey and Richard Dawson to collaborate as guest speakers and we're hoping for more in this next batch of Sales Club

Here’s what some have said:

“As a start-up business, the skills I have gained from sales club have been so valuable in achieving my sales targets and developing important connections”

“The skills, expert knowledge and support I’ve received from Sales Club are just

some of the reasons I would recommend attending the sessions” –

Philippa Fairbrother, Satori People Development

Several members have not only seen a tangible uptick in performance but have also formed valuable connections that have led to referrals, collaborations, and even friendships.

Why sales skills matter more than ever Sales isn’t just about persuasion anymore, it’s about trust, clarity, and relevance. In a market where buyers are more informed and more skeptical, the ability to communicate value clearly is a nonnegotiable skill.

Yet, too many professionals still see sales as a “dark art” or something only extroverts can master. Sales Club exists to challenge that. We believe anyone can improve their sales skills and that doing so will transform not just your business, but your confidence and mindset too.

Want in? Here’s how to join us

If you’re a Chamber member looking to grow your sales ability, meet other ambitious professionals, and walk away with tools you can use immediately, Sales Club is for you.

Places are limited to keep sessions focused and interactive. You can find upcoming dates and booking information through the Chamber website or by contacting the team directly.

Breaking new ground for clean energy in North Wales –infrastructure project gets underway

The Cydnerth project, which will support the expansion of the Morlais tidal energy scheme, has now moved into its construction phase, marking a major milestone for the North Wales low-carbon economy.

Work has begun on-site at Parc Cybi, Holyhead, to strengthen the grid infrastructure for Morlais, a flagship tidal energy project run by local social enterprise, Menter Môn Morlais Ltd. Backed by the North Wales Growth Deal and funding from both the Welsh and UK Governments, the £16 million Cydnerth project will futureproof Morlais by increasing its grid capacity from 18MW to an eventual 240MW.

Initial construction will involve the installation of underground cables to transmit clean electricity from the Morlais substation from the coast at Ynys Lawd (South Stack) to the national grid.

Cllr. Gary Prichard, Leader of the Isle of Anglesey County Council, said: “This is a significant milestone for Morlais and North Wales. The project can now leverage Growth Deal funding to ensure its expansion, enabling economic opportunities, strengthening local supply chains and supporting local jobs.”

Andy Billcliff, Chief Executive of Menter

Môn Morlais Ltd, added: “This is an important and welcome step toward realising the full potential of Ynys Môn’s tidal resources and establishing the area as a hub for sustainable energy. The work at Parc Cybi is crucial to that goal. As a local organisation, we’re committed to delivering economic benefits for our community, while safeguarding the environment.”

North Wales-based Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK, with its strong record of local employment and apprenticeships, has secured the contract for the construction and cabling work for Cydnerth.

Contracts Director for Jones Bros, Eryl Roberts, added: “We’re pleased to have been appointed to deliver Cydnerth, the next phase of infrastructure for Morlais, such an innovative renewable scheme right here on our doorstep. As with all our projects, we pride ourselves in providing local supply chain and employment opportunities and are excited to be working on site to deliver this important scheme.”

Cydnerth is part of the North Wales Growth Deal’s Low Carbon Energy Programme, which represents a £1 billion investment in the region's economy, with £240 million of this funded jointly by the Welsh and UK Governments.

Rebecca Evans MS, Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning, said: “The start of construction on the Cydnerth project represents another major milestone in North Wales' journey to becoming a renewable energy powerhouse. Backed by Welsh Government funding through the North Wales Growth Deal, this will unlock the full potential of Morlais tidal energy and demonstrates our unwavering commitment to the low-carbon transition.”

Wales Office Minister Dame Nia Griffith said: “It is great news that this major infrastructure project in Holyhead is now underway. The Cydnerth project helps cement North Wales’s growing reputation as a clean energy hub.

“I’m delighted that UK Government funding is supporting the project and helping us deliver our clean energy and economic growth missions.”

Menter Môn moves forward with hydrogen development

Ambitions to establish a significant hydrogen production facility in north Wales, have taken a step forward with the acquisition of additional land next to the Holyhead Hydrogen Hub site. As part of the region’s transition to low-carbon energy and sustainable infrastructure, the extended site now covers 24 acres at Parc Cybi, Holyhead.

The development includes two main sites, with planning permission already in place for a 1MW electrolyser on the original Holyhead Hydrogen Hub site. The new second site is much larger, offering the potential to scale up hydrogen production significantly in the future. Whilst this second site is being actively considered for further development, the developer, local social enterprise, Menter Môn, stresses that this remains subject

to planning approvals and stakeholder engagement.

Graham Morley, Project Manager for the Menter Môn scheme, said: “This is a key milestone for the future of clean energy in North Wales. Expanding the footprint of the Holyhead Hydrogen Hub gives us the opportunity to plan for a larger facility,

potentially producing five to ten times more green hydrogen – which could power local transport, industry, and jobs for years to come.”

Dafydd Gruffydd, Managing Director of Menter Môn, added: “We’re proud to be leading this project with our partners, but we’re also mindful of the need to grow in a responsible, phased way. We’re still in early stages with the newly secured land, and any development will be carefully planned and consulted on with the community and stakeholders.”

As part of Menter Môn’s energy portfolio of projects, the Hydrogen Hub is set to play a vital role in decarbonising transport and industry in north Wales, while supporting local economic growth and contributing to national net-zero targets. Menter Môn continues to work closely with government, industry, and community partners to ensure the hub delivers lasting impact.

Cat Williams Building Your Confidence Ltd.

WCNW: To begin, tell us a little about yourself and your background.

I’m Cat Williams, a double TEDx speaker, keynote presenter, transformational hypnotherapist, and founder of Building Your Confidence Ltd.

For over 25 years I’ve been helping people overcome anxiety, burnout, low self-esteem and many “invisible” mental barriers that hold them back.

I work with high-level professionals who want to further their careers or overcome internal blocks, as well as children, teens, and couples navigating everyday life issues such as stress, confidence dips and relationship challenges.

I’m a military wife which has taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of understanding what makes us “tick.” I’ve trained extensively in hypnotherapy, psychology, psychotherapy, CBT, NLP and professional speaking.

WCNW: What made you set up the business?

I began as a traditional talking therapist, but found that while my clients left therapy understanding their issues, many were still stuck managing symptoms rather than being set free.

I saw too many people battling perfectionism, people-pleasing or living with a constant feeling of “not being enough,” and knew they needed more than coping strategies; they needed to shift the root cause at a subconscious level.

That’s how my Break the Invisible Cage® method was born. It’s a five-step process that uncovers and releases the subconscious patterns holding people back so they can move forward with lasting confidence.

It’s not about “trying harder” or “becoming more”. Instead, the five steps guide people from awareness,

to uncovering the root cause of issues to understanding their core strengths, clarifying their real goals, and building sustainable habits.

WCNW: Can you tell us about your signature talk, Ride the Stallion Mind, and why it resonates so strongly with audiences?

Your subconscious mind is like a powerful stallion; strong and reactive. If you don’t know how to ride it, it can take over and control you. In Ride the Stallion Mind, I share simple ways to train the stallion mind so it stops working against you and starts being your superpower.

The talk is packed with relatable stories, science explained in plain English, and tools people can use immediately. You can watch the TEDx version on YouTube.

WCNW: What’s the common thread in the challenges you help clients with?

I work with both high-level professionals and everyday clients, including children,

teens, and couples. Whether it’s an executive preparing for a career leap, a teenager with exam anxiety, or a couple feeling disconnected, the root is usually the same: subconscious beliefs formed early in life. My job is to help them recognise those patterns, understand why they’re still there, and then update those beliefs so they can move forward with calm, confidence, and clarity.

WCNW: What are your main responsibilities in the business?

My overall responsibility is to ensure that my clients and audiences leave feeling a sense of clarity and relief, like they have had a weight lifted off their shoulders, and they are at the start of a new chapter in their life in which they can take control and be the person they want to be.

WCNW: What does a typical day look like for you?

Every day is different, which I love! It might include a 1:1 hypnotherapy session, running a school workshop or holding an evening webinar with attendees from across the world.

I could be finalising a conference talk in the morning and coaching someone through stage-fright in the afternoon. But every day is about helping people lead their minds instead of being led by it.

WCNW: What projects are you most excited about right now?

I’m writing a book called Break the Invisible Cage, preparing for the National Professional Speaking competition finals this October, and stepping into my role as PSA North West Regional President next year. I’m also expanding my online products and training and continuing to run my free monthly webinar.

I also run Strengths Unlocked sessions in workplaces, universities, and schools. These help people understand their natural strengths, how to use them, and how they can tip into overdrive and become a negative. Once this is grasped, you start understanding how to operate at your best and bring out the best in others.

Teams become more collaborative, communication improves and people feel more confident in their own skin.

WCNW: Have you faced any challenges along the way? If so, how did you overcome them?

In the early days, I tried to do everything myself. I soon learned the value of building a support network, outsourcing, and focusing on my zone of genius. Another challenge has been explaining “subconscious work” in a way that makes sense to everyone.

WCNW: How have businesses and individuals responded to your work?

The feedback is one of the most rewarding parts of my job. I get messages on a daily basis saying that people feel more in control of their minds than

ever before. Teens gain confidence for exams, couples reconnect, children shine with self-belief, and professionals go for opportunities they’d previously talked themselves out of.

WCNW: Looking ahead, what are your main aims for Building Your Confidence Limited?

To make Break the Invisible Cage® and my Strengths Unlocked® techniques the go-to methods for personal and professional transformation, and to have them recognised nationally and internationally. I’d also like to speak more about “Ride Your Stallion Mind®”, to write more books and to create more online products and courses to change people’s lives.

Helping people overcome fear of public speaking is such a passion of mine and going forward, I am also keen to build on my Develop Your Voice programme. I’m passionate about it because I’ve been there. I once dreaded public speaking, and now it’s a core part of my career. I want to help the leaders of the future who might not feel ‘good enough’ right now, to stand up and share their message.

WCNW: Are there any particular people or leaders you look up to and what have you learned from them?

I also run Strengths Unlocked sessions in workplaces, universities, and schools. These help people understand their natural strengths, how to use them, and how they can tip into overdrive and become a negative.

Once this is grasped, you start understanding how to operate at your best and bring out the best in others.

I admire Marisa Peer for her Rapid Transformational Therapy method, Mel Robbins for making mindset tools relatable and actionable, and Brené Brown for her work on courage and vulnerability. They’ve all shown me that the most powerful messages are the simplest and that confidence grows when you act, not when you wait to feel ready.

WCNW: What message would you give to people in business or anyone wanting to step into their full potential?

Everything begins and ends with you. We are each solely responsible for our own thoughts, feelings, behaviours and for the “buttons” that can be pressed in us. The more you work on your self-awareness, the more power you have over yourself and your life.

For example, fear and excitement feel the same in the body. It’s the story you are telling yourself that differs. Learn to “ride your stallion mind” and you’ll be able to reach your fullest potential. I’m here to help anyone who feels I’m the right person to guide them on that journey.

Cheshire & Warrington Local Skills Improvement Plan 2025: Progress, Priorities & The Power of Business Voice

As the Cheshire & Warrington Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP) completes another year, our 2025 Progress Report showcases a region-wide effort to reshape education and training around the real needs of local business. Approved by the Secretary of State for Education in August 2023, the LSIP is a three-year initiative led by South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce, designed to place businesses at the heart of the skills system.

What Is the Cheshire & Warrington LSIP?

Our LSIP focuses on five key themes: Technical Skills, Accessibility, Employability Competencies, Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG), and Educational Professionals, with a focus on transitioning industry professionals into teaching.

We aim to bridge the gap between business and post-16 education providers, ensuring that training provision aligns with current and future workforce demands.

Progress Highlights (July 2024 – June 2025)

• Technical Skills: Over 4,200 learners have accessed new facilities funded by our Local Skills Improvement Fund (LSIF), including immersive learning environments and green technology hubs. 38 Skills Bootcamps (funded training) are planned for 2025–26.

• Accessibility: More than 55 employers have received support navigating training and funding, including apprenticeship levy transfers. Inclusive initiatives such as SEND-specific careers fairs and youth task forces are helping disadvantaged groups access opportunities.

• Employability Competencies: Programmes like “Core Skills for 2030” and mock assessment centres have reached over 930 students, embedding essential skills like communication, resilience, and digital literacy into the curriculum.

• CEIAG: Over 6,000 students attended careers fairs, and new work experience models are being trialled in Net Zero, Life Sciences, and Advanced Manufacturing sectors.

• Educational Professionals: Initiatives like the Industry Associate Pilot are helping professionals transition into teaching roles, while Continued Professional Development and careers awareness training have reached over 60 educators.

What Still Needs to Be Done

Despite strong progress, several challenges remain:

• Increasing capacity within the education system to meet demand for technical course delivery.

• Improving employer understanding of training offers and funding mechanisms.

• Mapping gaps in employability skills provision and ensuring consistent reporting across partners.

• Strengthening engagement with disadvantaged groups and promoting inclusive recruitment.

• We are actively working with partners to address these issues, with full delivery targeted by August 2026.

Your Voice Matters – October Relaunch

This October, we will relaunch our engagement activities - and we need your voice!

Without input from businesses, we cannot make real change. Your feedback shapes the future of training and skills provision in Cheshire & Warrington, ensuring it reflects the realities of your workforce and industry.

Whether you're facing recruitment challenges, skills shortages, or planning for future growth, your insights are vital. Join us in shaping a resilient, responsive, and inclusive skills system.

WHAT I AM PASSIONATE ABOUT

What I am Passionate About...

Chief Officer of Dial West Cheshire by Micha Woodworth

Since 1986, Dial West Cheshire (DWC) has been passionate about supporting disabled people across Cheshire West and Chester. Our vision is clear: a society where disabled people can participate equally as full citizens. Our mission is equally focused: to improve the lives of disabled people.

Who we are

As a Disabled People’s User-Led Organisation (DPULO), more than 70% of our workforce – staff, volunteers and directors – live with a disability or longterm health condition. This diversity reflects and strengthens our work, ensuring that the services we provide are truly shaped by lived experience. The local need is significant. Recent census data shows that 17.9% of Cheshire West and Chester residents are disabled as defined by the Equality Act 2010. Around 27,000 households include someone whose daily activities are limited by long-term health conditions. The disability community here is both substantial and diverse – and for nearly four decades, Dial has been a trusted support and voice.

What we do

Our offer is wide-ranging, practical, and person-centred:

• Accredited Information & Advice Service – helping people secure the financial stability and support they need. Last year alone, our Welfare Advice team achieved £1.71 million in successful benefit claims and appeals for clients.

• Dial House Café – known as the “Heart of Dial”, this welcoming, inclusive space has been serving affordable food and drinks for almost 40 years. More than a café, it empowers independence, offering volunteering opportunities that often lead to employment. Chamber members can also get a 10% discount so be sure to pop by!

• West Cheshire Autism Hub – providing support, signposting and connection for autistic people and their families.

• Volunteering & Learning Programmes – a structured, safe and inclusive environment where people grow, learn and thrive. Some volunteers have remained with us for more than 30 years.

• T-Club - where the T stands for Tea, Tunes, Technology, Television and most importantly, Togetherness. T-Club is a monthly social group for those aged 50 and above. The social group is a user-led initiative, where all members, have a say in what activities take place.

One volunteer described Dial House Café best:

“When anyone feels unsafe, unsure or simply just needs company, they come to DIAL House like a homing pigeon.”

Our values and approach

• Holistic support – a safe place where everyone is welcome.

• Innovation – listening, learning, and testing ideas that meet real needs.

• Partnerships, Collaboration & Coproduction – building bridges across business, health, education, and community sectors.

• Reducing inequality – aligning our work with NHS England’s Core20PLUS5 priorities to tackle health inequalities locally.

A new chapter of leadership

As our newly appointed Chief Officer, I am proud to join a team that lives its values every day. I have seen first-hand how partnerships between businesses and community organisations deliver mutual benefits:

• Businesses gain more resilient and motivated employees through workplace volunteering and social responsibility initiatives.

• Communities gain investment, opportunity, and hope.

That is why we value membership of the Chamber of Commerce. It provides a platform where conversations between business and community can lead to real, lasting change.

Looking ahead

What excites me most about Dial is the power of innovation and collaboration. I have seen how small, creative shifts can ripple into big changes, from piloting social prescribing connectors in GP practices to pioneering community led initiatives that went on to influence national practice. Innovation for me is never about change for the sake of it. The greatest change happens when sectors work together – business, community, health, and education –to build stronger, fairer, more resilient communities.

At the heart of everything we do is a simple belief: when people are valued, heard and supported, individuals thrive, and whole communities are strengthened.

We welcome every opportunity to work with others who share our vision.

Abi’s journey to Partnership Design

When people ask what we do at Partnership Design, I always say we create standout brands, unforgettable experiences, and lasting partnerships.

With over 30 years of experience, we’re a close-knit team delivering large-scale, industry-leading events and creative solutions for ambitious clients across the UK, Europe and the USA. From showstopping exhibition stands to highimpact websites and business-boosting campaigns, we’re hands-on from concept to completion – always striving to exceed expectations.

I still remember the summer evening when Amy and I met at the Red House restaurant in Chester to discuss joining PDL and eventually running the business as Dad was gently persuaded to slow down.

My career hadn’t started in design. After university, I worked at Granada Television in live TV before moving into scheduling. When the channel I worked on closed,

I joined a digital agency and worked my way from Junior to Senior Project Manager. It was stressful but rewarding, teaching me how to juggle multiple projects, manage a team, and develop websites for major tourism destinations – skills that brought me closer to Dad’s world of design.

I had always grown up surrounded by creativity, watching my dad and brother sketch while learning from my parents’ hard work building PDL. So when Mum

and Dad suggested I join the business and work alongside Amy, I felt proud and grateful. Ironically, just a few years earlier I had been Amy’s wedding make-up artist - neither of us knowing we’d later become business partners.

From day one, Amy and I were a team. With my PM experience and her design eye, we complemented each other.

Determined to prove myself, I didn’t take a salary for the first year, earning the team’s trust while introducing processes and supporting Dad’s clients, including one of his main clients, Nutricia. Travelling with him to congresses, I saw first-hand how he nurtured relationships and went to extraordinary lengths to make clients “shine like stars.”

Today, Nutricia remains my main account, and for me, a deeply personal one, as their products supported Dad in hospital after his stroke in 2019, giving us precious extra time.

PDL is now everything Dad strived forloyal, creative, and client-focused. With me being based in the US, I’m excited to expand our reach further with Amy and the team, continuing the journey Dad began almost 35 years ago.

Darwin Gray doubles north Wales office space and welcomes new staff

Commercial law firm Darwin Gray has doubled its office space in Bangor, as part of the firm’s ambitious growth plans.

The expansion of Darwin Gray’s north Wales office comes just 12 months after the doubling of its head office in Cardiff.

In the past 2 years, the firm has experienced significant strategic growth. It has developed new service offerings to clients, and has also welcomed significant new talent to the team.

The latest new appointments include Solicitor, Gwen Hughes, who has joined the firm’s Property team, and Lowri Evans, who will be supporting the firm as Legal Assistant. Both are based in Bangor.

The firm has already experienced huge successes so far in 2025, including reappointments to the Welsh Government Commercial Delivery

Framework, the Welsh Language Commissioner legal framework, and other multiple major tender wins. In June, the firm also was awarded the Business Growth of the Year Award at the inaugural Legal News Wales awards.

The doubling of both the Cardiff and Bangor offices underpins the firm’s commitment to being a truly pan-Wales provider, supporting clients and communities across Wales and beyond.

Darwin Gray’s Managing Partner, Fflur Jones said: “We are delighted to continue expanding and investing in our north Wales home. With 30% of our staff fluent being Welsh speakers, we are proud to service businesses and organisations throughout the north Wales region, as well as the communities around them, in their preferred language.

We are proud to also be supporting a north Wales charity this year, Gafael Llaw, which helps support children and young people with cancer.”

With over 12% of the firm now based in Darwin Gray’s Bangor office, the firm has a growing foothold in the region, with a number of events in the pipeline in north Wales, including a mock disciplinary hearing and a number of sector-specific roundtables

On board with Claire Davies

Deputy Chair of the West Cheshire and North Wales Chamber of Commerce

Tell us a bit about yourself and your professional journey. What led you to this point in your career?

I’ve spent over 25 years in marketing and strategic leadership, working across sectors from housing and construction to digital services. My passion for marketing began when I did a year placement at Alfred McAlpine as part of my degree, where I quickly learnt the value of aligning the art of communication and brand strategy with wider business objectives. Along the way, I’ve had the privilege of working with some remarkable organisations, including the National Trust, Alfred McAlpine Plc, Carillion, and the University of Liverpool, each offering unique challenges and opportunities that shaped my strategic approach.

Over the years, I’ve led marketing teams, driven major business transformation projects, and even founded my own marketing agency, managing multiple client accounts simultaneously and delivering measurable growth. More recently, I’ve focused on sustainability projects, community engagement, and digital innovation. Each step of my journey has been about helping organisations grow through people, brands, and innovation; which naturally led me to leadership and governance roles where I can influence long-term strategy as well as day-to-day delivery.

As a member of the Board of Directors, what does your role entail?

As Deputy Chair of the West Cheshire and North Wales Chamber of Commerce, my role is to support the strategic direction of the organisation while ensuring we deliver tangible value to our members. This involves governance responsibilities, representing

the Chamber externally, and providing strategic guidance along with the wider NED team.

I’m also actively involved in initiatives that strengthen member engagement, ensuring that the voice of the business community shapes our priorities. It’s an exciting time for the Chamber and its members, with new opportunities for collaboration, innovation, and growth, and I’m committed to helping make the most of them. For me, it’s about balancing oversight with advocacy so that the Chamber remains both sustainable and impactful.

How do you see the organisation evolving in the next few years, and what role do you hope to play in that growth?

I see the Chamber continuing to grow as a central voice for businesses, with an even stronger focus on digital connectivity, sustainability, and crossborder collaboration between England and Wales. We have an opportunity to diversify our services, create more dynamic networking platforms, and represent members’ interests on a bigger stage, something that Sarah and her team are continuously delivering.

I also want to continue championing our Young Chamber initiative, which works to inspire the future ambition of children and young adults across the region. By connecting them with local businesses and opportunities, we can help develop the next generation of talent, leaders, and entrepreneurs.

I hope to contribute by championing innovation and ensuring our strategy turns ambition into actionable plans that deliver measurable benefits. My role, along with fellow board members, will be to help guide the big-picture vision with practical, results-driven implementation.

What advice would you give to aspiring professionals who one day hope to take on leadership roles like yours?

First, build breadth as well as depth. Be brilliant in your area of expertise, and in regard to marketing, also learn how it connects to finance, operations, people, and strategy. Second, invest in relationships. Leadership is about influence, and influence comes from trust and credibility. Third, be willing to step outside your comfort zone; the best opportunities are often the ones that feel a little daunting.

Never stop learning. Industries evolve quickly, and staying relevant is a responsibility, not an option. Finally, do what you love. When your work aligns with your passion, it shows, and your skills naturally become more effective because you’re truly invested in the outcome.

Beyond your work on the board, what are your passions or interests outside of the professional sphere?

I’m happiest outdoors. I love long walks with my Springer Spaniel, though I’m still not entirely sure who’s walking who; and I spend a fair amount of time on the water, either paddleboarding or attempting to surf, with heavy emphasis on ‘attempting’.

I’m also a big believer in keeping my brain as active. This year, I’ve taken AI courses and refreshed a few marketing skills. It’s too easy to get complacent, and it’s empowering to learn something new or to remind yourself you do know your stuff! Family and friends are everything to me, and I think fun is just as important. There’s nothing better than laughing with friends and family; it’s the best stress-buster I know.

Never stop learning. Industries evolve quickly, and staying relevant is a responsibility, not an option.

Driving tomorrow’s change: Farrall’s Group on building a greener legacy

It’s a crisp morning in Chester. The streets are just beginning to stir as one of Farrall’s Group’s newest trucks glides quietly through the city centre. Unlike the diesel engines that powered the company’s early years, this DAF XB electric HGV hums almost silently—no exhaust, no fumes, just smooth motion.

For passersby, it’s just another delivery vanishing into traffic. For Farrall’s Group, a third-generation family business, it represents the future.

Founded in 1956 by Eddie Farrall, the company has grown from a single truck to a logistics network serving customers across the UK. Today, Eddie’s grandchildren—Matthew and Kat Farrall—are shaping the next chapter. Matthew leads as Managing Director, while Kat drives the financial and strategic direction as Finance Director. Together, they are carrying forward the resilience of their grandfather’s vision while embedding sustainability at the core of the business.

“Our Grandad taught us that hard work and reliability are the foundation of success,” says Matthew. “Now our job is to build on that by ensuring this business thrives in a world where sustainability is no longer optional—it’s essential.”

Planting roots for the future

The first big step in this journey was not about vehicles or depots, but about planting seeds—literally.

The Farrall’s Group Family Forest has so far seen over 1,700 trees planted across 15 acres. As they mature, the trees will absorb the equivalent of one year’s worth of the company’s carbon emissions while creating habitats for wildlife.

For Matthew, it was about more than offsetting:

“The forest is a symbol of growth. It’s something physical our family and our staff can walk through and say: this is what the future looks like.”

Kat agrees, adding a different angle: “From a financial and cultural perspective, the forest was a smart first step. It’s a relatively modest investment, but it builds momentum. People see the trees growing year on year, and it makes sustainability real.”

Harnessing the sun

If the forest was about symbolism, solar power was about substance. In December 2023, Farrall’s Group installed

nearly 1,400 solar panels across its Deeside depot, generating 310,000 kWh of clean energy annually. Soon after, the system was expanded to a 552 kWp array, supplying renewable power for the site and its electric fleet.

“Our grandfather never could have imagined our depot running on sunlight,” Matthew says with a smile. “But it’s the kind of bold step we need to take if we’re serious about net zero.”

Kat brings in the financial perspective: “For me, it was also about resilience. Energy prices are volatile. By generating our own power, we’re insulating the business against shocks. Sustainability and financial security go hand in hand.”

Quiet deliveries, cleaner streets

The next leap came in 2024 with the introduction of the first DAF XB electric HGV to the fleet. Powered directly by the solar panels at Deeside, it’s used primarily for urban deliveries around Chester.

“Driving it feels completely different,” says Matthew. “It’s quiet, smooth, and safer with its advanced technology. Every mile we cover is another step toward proving logistics can be clean and efficient.”

For customers, the benefits are obvious: reduced emissions, quieter streets, and proof that sustainable deliveries are not just a concept but a daily reality.

Recognition and responsibility

In November 2024, Farrall’s Group was awarded the Excellence in Sustainability Award by the West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce.

“Recognition like this is important because it validates the effort,” Kat explains. “It shows that even as a regional, family-run business, we can lead by example in an industry often seen as slow to change.”

Lessons learned on the road

Looking back, Farrall’s Group offer some advice to other businesses—family-run or otherwise—considering their own sustainability journey:

1. Define your purpose.

“For us, sustainability means resilience and legacy,” says Matthew.

2. Take it in steps. “We didn’t start with electric trucks—we built up to it with projects like the forest and solar,” Kat notes.

3. Bring your people along.

“Our team take pride in pointing out the solar panels or the forest. That pride drives culture,” Matthew adds.

4. See the financial case. “Sustainability reduces long-term costs and risks. Don’t overlook that,” Kat stresses.

5. Celebrate progress. “Share your story openly. It inspires others and builds customer trust,” Matthew says.

A family legacy, evolving

From Eddie’s single truck in the 1950s to solar-powered depots and electric HGVs in the 2020s, Farrall’s Group is proof that family businesses can adapt, innovate, and thrive.

Eddie remains proud of the transformation:

“I never imagined we’d be talking about solar panels and electric wagons,” he reflects. “But seeing Matthew and Kat take this business forward makes me certain we’re in good hands.”

For the siblings, the journey is deeply personal.

“This isn’t just a company to us—it’s our family’s legacy,” says Matthew. “Our responsibility is to hand it to the next generation stronger and more sustainable than we found it.”

Kat nods in agreement:

“When you grow up in a family business, you feel that weight of responsibility. But it’s also an opportunity. We get to shape a company that our children and grandchildren will be proud of—and that’s what drives us.”

On that crisp Chester morning, as the electric truck hums quietly past shopfronts and pedestrians, one thing is clear: Farrall’s Group isn’t just moving goods. They’re moving a family legacy— and an entire industry—toward a greener, more sustainable future.

The end of de minimis: Another Brexit for SME exporters?

A rule change in Washington could hit thousands of UK SMEs, raising costs and cutting off a key driver of innovation. On 29 August 2025, the USA eliminated its $800 de minimis threshold, ending an exemption that had allowed frictionless, duty-free shipments of low-value goods. This isn’t a minor technicality, it underpinned UK SMEs’ ability to sell directly to US consumers, compete globally without prohibitive costs, and experiment with new products.

Postal services across Europe have already suspended deliveries to the US while US Customs clarifies procedures, leaving SMEs in limbo. The timing couldn’t be worse: SME confidence is already low, and the move signals a broader trend away from open, low-friction trade. Past shocks like Brexit show how damaging new barriers can be. Businesses will need to adapt fast, and the UK Government must accelerate its trade strategy to soften the impact.

A great leveller in global trade

Introduced in 2016, the US threshold allowed shipments under $800 to enter duty-free. In 2021 alone, UK businesses shipped $5 billion worth of goods under this exemption, with 80% via e-commerce, mostly low-value clothing and fashion items. It gave even the smallest sellers access to the world’s largest consumer market, bypassing complex paperwork and duties.

Compared to other markets, the US level was unusually high:

• UK – £135

• EU – €150

• Canada – CAD 20

• Australia – AUD 1,000

The US government cited concerns about fraud, unfair foreign competition, and boosting domestic manufacturing as reasons for its removal.

An unseen driver of innovation

This threshold wasn’t just a cost saver; it was an innovation enabler. By stripping away duties and paperwork, it allowed SMEs to act like multinationals, testing products abroad and scaling exports without prohibitive risk. For smaller firms without dedicated export teams, this was critical. It encouraged “learning by doing”, experimenting with product cycles, fulfilment models, and direct consumer relationships.

Studies by the OECD and others confirm that such thresholds disproportionately benefit SMEs by reducing fixed trade costs. The result? More firms engage in trade, boosting growth and innovation. De minimis quietly functioned as a free-market mechanism, helping SMEs overcome structural barriers to global markets.

Is this another Brexit?

The timing feels uncomfortably familiar. In Q2 2025, only 22% of SME exporters reported rising export orders, while 27% saw declines. Micro-exporters fared worst.

Brexit offers a cautionary tale. After the TCA in 2021, nearly half of exporters (49%) reported difficulties adapting, versus just 16% who found it easy. Problems included initial confusion, backlogs, and the long-term burden of higher costs.

Some SMEs exited the EU market entirely, while others set up EU bases to cope.

The US change may not be as seismic, but similar patterns loom: postal suspensions are causing confusion, and exporters now face permanently higher costs. Some will cut back, others may set up US operations to avoid friction.

A broader shift and the need to adapt

The suspension of postal deliveries is the first ripple, but this is part of a global trend toward tighter control of lowvalue imports. The EU is considering scrapping its €150 threshold, centralising customs, and imposing a €2 charge per item. The UK may review its £135 threshold, with HM Treasury projecting £1 billion in extra duties. These changes could hit consumer-facing sectors hard and discourage SMEs from exporting altogether.

For smaller firms, the pressure is rising. To adapt, they must:

• Partner with distributors and logistics providers to offset costs

• Ensure proof of origin compliance for varying tariffs

• Seek guidance from Chambers of Commerce for navigating new rules

Over the long term, competitiveness depends on a proactive UK trade strategy: stronger supply chains, targeted SME support, modernised digital trade systems, and trade negotiations that reduce, not escalate, barriers.

As friction increases, the removal of de minimis is a wake-up call. SMEs must innovate, adapt, and forge new partnerships to stay competitive in a world where low-friction trade is no longer guaranteed.

From bullied to British Diversity Awards winner:

One year of Recruit Inclusively

One year ago today, I launched Recruit Inclusively with nothing but a vision, a VR headset, and frankly, a lot of naivety about what lay ahead. If someone had told me then that I’d spend months perfecting empathydriven video content, win a national diversity award, and help companies transform their inclusion practices in just 90 days, I’d have laughed nervously and asked for a cup of tea.

The reality behind the vision Those early months were storyboards, technical manuals, and an alarming amount of coffee cups, trying to create VR experiences that didn’t just look impressive but changed hearts and minds. The technology was the easy part - it was crafting those crucial moments of genuine understanding that nearly broke me. Each video had to be perfect. Months of rewrites, re-shoots, and the

occasional creative meltdown later, I finally cracked it.

The real challenge? Defining exactly what our 90-day neuroinclusion programme would deliver.

I experimented with every combination of workshops, follow-ups, and tools. The breakthrough came when I realised cookie-cutter approaches were exactly what I was trying to move away from.

Beyond the PowerPoint Prison

Our final offering became something I’m proud of: interactive workshops that ditch the dreaded PowerPoint in favour of VR empathy journeys where participants literally experience the workplace through neurodivergent eyes. This is paired with comprehensive staff engagement surveys to uncover blind

spots, followed by hands-on support. Because without proper follow-through, diversity training is just expensive boxticking.

The magic happens when a manager puts on that headset and suddenly understands why a colleague might need to step away during fire alarms, or why that brilliant analyst produces their best work with noise-cancelling headphones. It’s not about special treatment; it’s about smart management.

A night to remember

In March, standing in a packed ballroom in Park Lane, London, hearing my name called as Hero of the Year at the British Diversity Awards was something I hadn’t dared dream of. That recognition wasn’t just about me; it was proof our approach - innovation with empathy - was making a real difference.

Making it personal

I’m neurodivergent myself. I’ve lived the isolation of not quite fitting the mould. Every workshop I deliver is fuelled by that memory. Recruit Inclusively exists because no one should navigate that alone.

The road ahead

As I celebrate this first year, I’m buzzing with plans for what’s next. Here’s to year two of shaking up workplace inclusion, one immersive experience at a time.

New multi-million pound fantasy movie, Excalibur, looking to work with North Wales SMEs!

Secret Planet productions are creating a new multimillion-pound fantasy movie, Excalibur, based on Welsh mythology. It will be the first of a major film franchise being shot exclusively in Wales. Excalibur will be a worldwide cinema release and then stream globally through the world’s largest platforms, passionately promoting Welsh heritage, language, mythology, and culture.

Director Dan Freeman and his team at Secret Planet productions are determined to ensure this project becomes a powerful driver of economic growth, tourism, education, and employment across Wales — much

like The Lord of the Rings did for New Zealand. The crucial difference? Wales is the true home of Western European fantasy and the legend of King Arthur — and now, fantasy is coming home.

To achieve this, the Excalibur team is building partnerships with Welsh SMEs for co-marketing and collaborations that can bring local businesses to a worldwide audience they might not otherwise reach.

They are looking to:

• Strengthen the economic package for Welsh Government and investors.

• Publicise the film within Wales via SME partners’ social media and networks. Importantly, this is not about taking money from SMEs. The film’s revenue will come from cinema and streaming success. The goal is to unite Wales behind this thrilling opportunity and take Welsh businesses and culture to the world.

“It’s absolutely vital that SMEs in North Wales are part of this journey,” says Executive Producer, Neil Patrick. “These are the businesses that shape the identity of our communities. By working together, we can amplify their reach and make sure the global spotlight on Excalibur also shines on the incredible talent, craft, and innovation happening across Wales every day.”

To discuss potential partnerships, Welsh SMEs can contact producer Neil Patrick – neil@secretplanet.co.uk.

An insight into Rossett Hall Hotel: Where history meets modern hospitality

From 18th-century roots to awardwinning events and weddings, Rossett Hall continues to thrive under the Everbright Hotel Group.

Nestled in the heart of a prime location in a charming village location, Rossett Hall is perfectly positioned midway between the historic city of Chester and the vibrant, fast-growing city of Wrexham - now internationally recognised around the world thanks to the celebrity owners of Wrexham AFC. Excellent road links to North Wales and the North West makes it relaxing retreat and a convenient base for business and leisure.

But Rossett Hall’s appeal goes far deeper than geography. A striking Georgian house dating back to 1750, the property is steeped in history, with fascinating links to Lord Horatio Nelson and former Prime Minister William Gladstone. This distinguished heritage gives the hotel a unique sense of character that still resonates with guests today.

A reputation for excellence

Now offering 51 bedrooms and proudly holding a Visit Wales 4-star accreditation, Rossett Hall Hotel has become synonymous with exceptional service. It has built a reputation not just as a welcoming place to stay, but as one of the region’s most sought-after wedding venues.

The hotel’s elegant spaces, combined with a dedicated events team, make it a natural choice for couples locally and from further afield.

Business meets heritage

While weddings remain at the heart of Rossett Hall’s reputation, the hotel has also become a well-regarded destination for business and events. With three versatile conference and function rooms, it caters to everything from intimate board meetings to large-scale corporate gatherings.

The largest space, the Allington Suite, can host up to 120 guests and is often booked for conferences, gala dinners, and private celebrations. This summer also saw the launch of a new purpose-built Boardroom, offering a contemporary, state-of-the-art space for executive meetings.

Andrew Plimmer, Group Development & Communications Manager for Everbright Hotel Group, explains:

“We’re proud that Rossett Hall is now firmly established as a hub for both leisure and business. The new Boardroom reflects our commitment to continuous investment, ensuring we can meet the needs of today’s guests while respecting the heritage of the building.”

Dining reimagined

Hospitality at Rossett Hall extends well beyond its bedrooms and event spaces.

Dining has been given a fresh focus with the relaunch of Oscars Restaurant, led by new Restaurant Manager, Leslie OsborneFord. A much-loved part of the hotel’s identity, Oscars is being reinvigorated with an emphasis on quality cuisine in stylish, welcoming surroundings.

“Oscars is about creating an experience,” Leslie commented. “It’s not just about great food, but about making people feel at home – whether they’re hotel guests or part of the local community”, he continued.

This renewed vision promises to reestablish Oscars as a highlight for both hotel guests and the wider local community.

Part of a growing legacy Rossett Hall holds a special place within the Everbright Hotel Group - it was the company’s first acquisition and remains central to its story. Since then, Everbright has expanded its portfolio across North Wales and the Lake District, with properties including the Wild Pheasant Hotel & Spa in Llangollen, The Llandudno Bay Hotel, The Belmont Hotel, The George Hotel in Penrith, and Stonecross Manor in Kendal.

Each property reflects the Group’s ethos: blending historic charm with modern hospitality. In Kendal, Stonecross Manor is nearing completion of a year-long refurbishment, ensuring it remains a cornerstone of the local community.

Andrew notes: “Everbright’s mission has always been to protect the heritage of historic hotels while breathing new life into them. Rossett Hall is a perfect example of how tradition and modern hospitality can come together to create something truly special.”

For Everbright, Rossett Hall is more than just a hotel – it’s a living example of how heritage properties can evolve to meet the needs of today’s guests without losing their soul.

A sprinkle of fairy dust to make the world a happier place at Christmas

You might be forgiven for thinking that it’s all about Panto at Christmas for Theatr Clwyd. And with more than 50 performances of their awardwinning Rock n Roll panto, that could be true.

Whilst panto undoubtedly brings joy to thousands of visitors each year, what you may not know is that Christmas also marks a major opportunity for Theatr Clwyd to sprinkle eco-friendly fairy dust (environmental sustainability is a strategic priority!) a good deal further at a time of year when many are struggling.

At Christmas, when consumerism peaks, the experience of extreme low-income families can be deeply affecting so Theatr Clwyd works with Flintshire Social Services to ensure that children and young people receive gifts through their Christmas shoe box appeal. Supported by Theatr Clwyd company members, visitors and their wider supporter network,

120 boxes full of Christmassy fun and colourful treats were created last year to make the world a brighter place for a young person.

Theatr Clwyd regularly invites families identified via referral partners to watch panto for free. Last year more than 600 people came to watch. And for those who can’t get to the theatre, panto is live streamed free, to more than 3300 viewers in hospitals and local care homes, with satellite events at local libraries, hospitals and community venues bringing festive joy to isolated and ill people at Christmas. “So kind of Theatr Clwyd, showing true community spirit and support to our

patients!”, said one of last year’s viewers at a local hospital. On top of this their festive elves, or rather talented actormusicians, visit local care homes helping the residents celebrate with music, song and fun.

All this fairy dust lovingly sprinkled by Theatr Clwyd fulfils their ambitions to make the world a happier place one moment at a time, for even the smallest act can make a massive difference to someone struggling.

UK Employment Rights Bill:

Key changes and how businesses should prepare

Labour’s Employment Rights Bill, introduced in October 2024, is nearing the final stages of the UK parliamentary process and is set to bring some of the most significant changes to UK employment law in decades. With reforms due to be phased in between 2025 and 2027, businesses need to understand what’s coming and act early to stay compliant.

What Amendments Have Been Proposed?

Several changes to the legislation were proposed during the Report Stage in the House of Lords and have the backing of the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) Research by the BCC shows 79% of firms don’t feel the impact of new government policies is being properly assessed and 77% think policy change is not moving at the right pace.

The Lords’ amendments, which could make a real difference for business, are:

• Reducing the qualifying period for unfair dismissal from two years to six months, rather than to day one, with a statutory probation period brought in after that. This will help ensure the employment relationship is right for everyone.

• Additional consultation being carried out before introducing some elements of the bill. These include zero-hours contracts, flexible working, Statutory Sick Pay and unfair dismissal.

• Retaining the turnout threshold of 50% of union members voting in a ballot for it to be valid.

• Employees getting a right to request a guaranteed hours contract after 26 weeks. This is instead of employers having to continuously offer them to people, even if they prefer the flexibility of their current arrangements.

What Does The Bill Mean for Business?

The changes will require a major review of policies, contracts and HR practices. Employers should prepare now by updating variation clauses, leave policies and sick pay terms, as well as training managers on new obligations.

Commenting on the changes, Maria Davison Skills and Policy Director at the Chamber of Commerce, said: “The Employment Rights Bill represents

a fundamental shift in the employeremployee relationship. While it aims to deliver greater fairness and security for workers, it also brings significant compliance challenges for businesses. Planning ahead is essential. We’re committed to supporting members through these changes with clear guidance and practical advice.”

To help businesses navigate this evolving landscape, the Chamber recently hosted a webinar outlining the key reforms and their implications. Further events and resources are planned to ensure members remain informed as new requirements come into force.

Mandatory ID verification for company directors And PSCs

From November

From 18 November 2025, Companies House will introduce new legal requirements for directors and people with significant control (PSCs) of companies to verify their identities.

• New directors will need to complete verification to incorporate a company or take up a new appointment.

• Existing directors must verify at the point of filing their next annual confirmation statement, within a 12-month transition period.

• PSCs will also be required to verify within 12 months of commencement. Verification can be completed quickly and free of charge via GOV.UK One Login, or through an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP).

More than 300,000 individuals have already verified their identity during the voluntary period.

Companies House will contact businesses with guidance and support ahead of the rollout.

Backing your business: A step forward for SMEs

The UK Government has launched its Backing Your Business plan, placing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which make up 99.8% of UK businesses, support 60% of private sector jobs and generate over £2.8 trillion, at the heart of economic growth. The strategy aims to remove barriers, foster innovation, and create the best G7 environment to start and grow a business.

Key measures include:

• Fixing Fundamentals:

New legislation to tackle late payments, cut regulatory costs by 25%, simplify compliance, and accelerate planning processes.

• Finance Access: Expanded Start-Up Loans for 69,000 firms, £5bn ENABLE guarantees, regional investment, and digital finance tools.

• Backing Everyday Economy: High street regeneration, permanent business rate cuts for small retail and hospitality, and tougher crime prevention.

• Skills and Technology: £1.2bn annual investment in skills, apprenticeships, and digital adoption, plus leadership and AI training.

• Opening Opportunities: A new Business Growth Service, increased export finance (£80bn), and enhanced SME procurement access.

Responding to the announcement, Alex Veitch, Director of Policy at the British Chambers of Commerce, called it “a much-needed step forward in recognition and support for SMEs.” He welcomed action on late payments, “a well-established barrier to growth”, and the new online Business Growth Service as a valuable link to local Chambers of Commerce.

Veitch praised the focus on exports and technology adoption but warned more must be done:

“Businesses are still struggling with a mounting wall of costs. We need longerterm reform of business rates and no further tax increases. Strategic plans set the direction, now we need funding and real-world support to deliver growth and reduce the cost of doing business.”

n Maria Davison, Skills & Policy Director at the Chamber.

Email Marketing Automation, The BIG One!

Marketing automation is a phrase that’s often bandied about and for the most part it’s pretty much self-explanatory.

So where does email marketing fit in?

From a simple ‘Thanks for joining our mailing list’ to complex customer pathways, email marketing has it all.

Think about it. Your customer or potential customer signs up for your newsletter via your website or social channel. At this point they are highly interested in what your company does and are keen for more information. So, you automate a Welcome Email, letting them know a bit more about you and giving them an opportunity to purchase something.

This is probably the most successful email you’ll send. It’s shown that sending an automated welcome email can generate up to 320%* more revenue than regular marketing emails.

You then continue with a ‘nurture’ sequence, sending out valuable personalised content, that takes the customer on a journey to build trust, establish your brand’s credibility and increase your sales. You’re building customer relationships without even lifting a finger

But what about those lost sales moments, or abandoned carts, as it’s referred to in marketing terms?

This is when email automation is really your best friend.

Got items in the basket but didn’t check out? Send an email reminding them.

Previous customer that hasn’t purchased anything in a while? Send them an email reminding them how great you are and how they still need your product or service in their lives.

Loyal customers that have spent over a certain amount of money with you? Send them an email letting them know how important they are. You could even send them a token of appreciation in the form of a voucher.

These few examples are just the tip of the email marketing automation iceberg. There’s so much more.

Plus, the beauty is that all of these emails can be automated. This is where mmunic Ltd and mmunicMail come into their own.

This all sounds good on paper, but how do you go about doing it?

We’ve got the answer!

Not only do we have one of the most powerful email marketing platforms out there, we have a friendly and knowledgeable team that is here to hold your hand and help you set the whole thing up, all included in your monthly subscription.

Who else does this? No one, that’s who! *invesp

Employment falls to record low after National Insurance changes

New research from the West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce has revealed the impact that changes to employer National Insurance Contributions have had on businesses in North Wales.

The latest results of its Quarterly Business Report, a leading survey of business sentiment in the region, highlights that only one in five businesses (21%) reported an increase in employment over the last three months, a record low outside of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The report, based on responses from 90 firms between 12th May and 9th June, also reveals that of those employers that attempted to recruit, 75% encountered difficulties, further highlighting the challenges that businesses are encountering in the labour market.

Skills & Policy Director at the West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce, Maria Davison, said:

“In our Quarterly Business Report after the Autumn Statement, business confidence and investment plans fell substantially whilst concerns around corporation tax (which includes NI) rose to its highest level on record. This pointed to a challenging time ahead for business and our report for Q2 of 2025 is now showing the real impact of the announcements that were made.”

“Members surveyed directly cite that changes to NI contributions and National Living Wage increases have impacted their recruitment and investment plans. With further changes coming in the form of the Employment Rights Bill, businesses are entering a new employment landscape marked by structurally higher labour costs and administrative requirements.”

“We are keen to speak to businesses that are experiencing challenges in the labour market so please do reach out via 01244 669988 or info@wcnwchamber.org.uk.”

Elsewhere in the Quarterly Business Report for Quarter 2 of 2025:

• Business confidence has been trending downwards since record highs in Q3 2023 with turnover and profitability both dipping this quarter.

• Cashflow remains tight with only 20% of firms reporting an increase in the last quarter.

• Sales and Orders, both domestic and overseas, showed signs of recovery after a dip last quarter.

• Investment plans, for both plant & machinery and training, have continued the same downward trend that we have seen for the last two years.

Maria added, “There have been many challenges for businesses in the first six months of 2025, both at home and abroad, and business sentiment in Q2 remains subdued, following last Autumn’s tax increase announcements and the more recent introduction of global tariffs.

“The series of long-term strategies from Government in recent weeks have been welcomed, but businesses are clear –they want their costs reduced, regulation reformed, and skills barriers removed. Action by policymakers now, will improve confidence and give firms the tools to boost growth.”

View of Businesses

Members of the Chamber of Commerce have given their feedback on the current economic climate:

Carlton Relf, Managing Director of Wrexham-based commercial cleaning contractor Maidscando, said:

“Our business has seen rising operating costs, particularly the NI and National Living Wage increases - alongside rising inflation - which have undermined our financial performance. Like other market sectors particularly reliant on part-time and entry level job roles, our employment costs have risen by up to 13%.

“We’re a growing business but we are having to look at making further operating efficiencies or re-evaluate our pricing strategies. The lasting nature of these challenging trading conditions underscores the need for practical business support measures to ease the pressure on our region’s companies.”

Like other market sectors particularly reliant on part-time and entry
roles,

Getting Started with Education Angel

What’s in a name:

Parents describe me as being their ‘education guardian angel’, providing support and guidance before they realise they need it! Hence the name Education Angel.

Your position?

Sole Trader

About your business?

Education Angel helps parents decode their child's dyslexia, taking them from a place of worry and fear to one of possibility, hope and positive results. A child’s dyslexia diagnosis can feel overwhelming, especially for a dyslexic parent who struggled at school. But with the right support, a diagnosis can be a turning point, providing opportunities, not setbacks.

Education Angel helps parents understand their child’s unique dyslexia profile, shines a light on potential strengths and opportunities for success and explores how to secure appropriate support for the potential challenges. About you!

I have spent over 25 years working in education. Throughout my career, I have been particularly interested in removing barriers to learning for children with dyslexia. I have taught in primary and secondary schools and am a specialist dyslexia teacher and assessor. Why?

As a Head of Learning Support and Special Needs Co-Ordinator (SENCo) for over 10 years, I knew from experience that pupils with dyslexia could positively thrive at school when given appropriate support. But through discussions with parents, I was aware that many parents were struggling to understand their child's dyslexia diagnosis and associated behaviours. It became clear that if I helped parents understand their child’s dyslexic profile, they would be able to advocate for appropriate support and cheerlead their child throughout their school career. Resulting in happier children and better outcomes for them.

The light bulb moment!

I realised that if parents could see the advantages of dyslexia, rather than focus solely on the disadvantages, they could encourage their child to see them as well. By creating a business combining my specialist knowledge and teaching experience, I could provide this service to support parents and their children.

Who is your ideal client/customer?

My ideal clients are positive, proactive parents who are unsure how to best support their dyslexic child. They may be feeling confused, worried or frustrated by their child’s dyslexia and are looking for practical support and guidance to navigate the challenges ahead and look for opportunities for success.

Often, their children are facing key transitions, e.g. moving to secondary school or embarking on GCSE/A-level studies and the parents do not want dyslexia to hold their child back.

Best moment so far?

Undoubtedly, the best moments so far have been hearing the success stories of the children whose parents have worked with me and watching the weight lift from their shoulders as the dyslexia ‘problem’ has become an opportunity to shine.

Biggest challenges?

Setting up as a sole trader, after a career in teaching, had its challenges. As a teacher, I was employed as a member of the school staff. Admin, Finance and HR support were all provided for me. As a sole trader, I am now responsible for all areas of my business and it was key that I understood these aspects so that I could build strong foundations for my business.

Benefits of the Chamber Start-Up Club since you joined?

The Chamber Start-Up Club has been invaluable. It has provided me with excellent business training and insights, led by a range of experts and mentors. The training sessions have also allowed me the opportunity to meet with peers at a similar business stage, to create new connections and explore new ideas.

Lessons learnt – What would you do differently and why?

I only found out about the Chamber Start-Up Club last summer. I would have joined sooner had I known about it. When you are trying to figure things out by yourself, you can end up overthinking things as you try to work out your next best step. Once I joined the Start-Up Club, my business pathway became clearer, and as I regularly took baby steps I gained more momentum.

Undoubtedly, the best moments so far have been hearing the success stories of the children whose parents have worked with me and watching the weight lift from their shoulders as the dyslexia ‘problem’ has become an opportunity to shine.

The Person Behind the Business: Steven Hesketh

An overview of yourself and your current role:

I’m Steven Hesketh, a hospitality entrepreneur with a passion for people, places, and great experiences. I’m the CEO of The Savvy Hotel Group and founder of Hospitality Hero, as well as a co-director of DevaFest - an independent family-friendly music festival in Cheshire. Across all of these ventures, I’m focused on leading with purpose, supporting the next generation of hospitality leaders, and creating sustainable, profitable businesses that people genuinely enjoy being part of.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Seeing people grow. Whether it's a junior team member stepping into their first management role or a business partner bringing a bold idea to life, it brings me great joy seeing our team work together. I also love the diversity of what I do - no two days are the same. I think I am quite a creative person, so I love sitting down with like-minded people and coming up with creative idea on how to expand or grow either the business or my team. Was a role like this always what you aspired to?

Not exactly. I didn’t know I would end up owning hotels, owning a festival, and advocate for the industry nationally - but hospitality has a way of pulling you in.

It’s been a journey of saying yes to opportunities and being pushed into challenges. I had some hard-working role models that I always aspired to. I knew I could achieve what they were if I observed and put the work in too.

Each step built on the last, and along the way I’ve picked up partnerships, business ventures, and a real desire to influence the wider hospitality landscape through The Hospitality Hero and my involvement in my voluntary committee work.

Tell us a bit about what you do outside of work to relax:

“Stay grounded. Businesses are about people - your team, your customers, your suppliers. Lead with empathy, make decisions with integrity, and surround yourself with people who challenge you and if they don’t, change it.”

Tell us about your previous roles/ business journey:

My first job was washing windows at a beach resort in Australia, which gave me a real understanding of what makes a great experience from the ground up. I’ve done every role within a hotel – from housekeeping to kitchen porter - I then moved into senior hotel management, and later into ownership and investment.

Family time is really important to methat’s my anchor. I also enjoy travelling, and spending time at gigs when I can actually enjoy them as a guest, not as an organiser! A good bottle of wine and hottub time also helps me de-stress.

In an ideal world, what else would you like to be?

Honestly, I think I’m already doing what I’m meant to do. But if I had to choose something else -maybe a mentor or coach full-time, supporting aspiring entrepreneurs to think bigger and believe in themselves more.

What advice would you give to anyone else in business?

Stay grounded. Businesses are about people - your team, your customers, your suppliers. Lead with empathy, make decisions with integrity, and surround yourself with people who challenge you and if they don’t, change it. Don’t be afraid to change your mind and direction. Sometimes the best opportunities come when you’re brave enough to change direction and evolve.

Video production company marks a decade of Chamber membership

Award-winning video production company Knew Productions welcomed the CEO of West Cheshire and North Wales (WCNW) Chamber of Commerce to its head office recently, to mark 10 years of membership of the Chamber.

Richard Knew, managing director at Knew Productions, welcomed Sarah Bailey, CEO of WCNW Chamber of Commerce, to the Knew HQ to meet the team and find out more about the Wrexham-based video production company, which is one of the leading video companies in the area with a pedigree of over 25 years.

Knew Productions has been a member of the Chamber of Commerce for a decade, benefiting from the high-

quality networking opportunities and business support that the membership organisation can provide. As part of its recent business growth, the company has also recently attended a number of trade missions and exhibitions to different countries, demonstrating its unique offerings in video production for certain sectors and the depth of skill and experience that is in North Wales and Cheshire.

Richard Knew explained why membership of the Chamber was so important to him: “Over the last decade, we have met many amazing businesses through our membership with the Chambers and I am proud to be working with many of them. In fact, it is easy to list the top 10 members who have become clients.

“We have worked with Kronospan, Nightingale House Hospice, R-EV Power & Rawson Solar, Cheshire Surveys, Fibrax, P&A Group, Pathway To Carbon Zero, Theatr Clwyd, Zebra Marketing & Communications Ltd and Barnhill Consulting. In many cases, after meeting with them initially at a Chambers of Commerce networking event.”

Sarah Bailey commented: “In my role of CEO I think it is vital that I get to know as many of our members as possible. Every business has its own backstory, and it is fascinating to hear each one. I am delighted to hear the Chambers has been able to provide so many useful introductions to Knew Productions; the company has been a real asset for the area on recent trade delegations to the United States and China.”

NextGen Business Solutions driving sustainability for SMEs

Since launching in May 2023, NextGen Business Solutions has been helping small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) take practical steps towards greater sustainability. The company, based at M-SParc in Anglesey with additional locations in Llandudno and Northwich, has seen rapid growth and is on track to achieve a turnover of £500,000 this year. A key focus for NextGen is improving sustainability in printing and document management. Many SMEs are still using outdated and inefficient devices, which leads to unnecessary costs, wasted energy and higher carbon output. NextGen helps businesses replace old equipment with modern, energy efficient systems and implement smart digital document solutions.

By reducing paper usage, streamlining workflows and improving document security, businesses can cut waste while boosting productivity. “Our goal is to make sustainability achievable and affordable for businesses of all sizes,” says John Scudamore, Director at NextGen. “We are not just providing hardware, we are helping clients create a technology roadmap that delivers both environmental and financial benefits.

Our Strategic Members

”NextGen’s work extends beyond the office to the car park. The company offers EV charging installations for businesses wanting to provide charging facilities for staff and customers. With electric vehicle adoption continuing to grow, this not only supports sustainability goals but also attracts eco conscious customers and improves convenience. The approach is proving popular with a growing client base across Wales and the Northwest of England. Businesses are recognising the value of lowering their environmental impact while improving operational efficiency.

Looking ahead, NextGen plans to continue expanding its services and staying at the forefront of sustainable technology for SMEs. As Scudamore explains: “Sustainability and smart business go hand in hand. We are here to make sure our clients enjoy the benefits of both.”
