Samuel Aubin was born in 1967 and is a maker of documentaries and short films. He runs documentary courses in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia and Turkey for the Docmonde and Lumière du monde networks. A resident of Istanbul from 2013 to 2017, he is now once again based in Lyon. He is the author of the novella Le Pommier rouge d’Alma-Ata, published by Turquoise in spring 2017.

imon vit à Istanbul avec sa famille depuis 2013. Formateur dans le cadre d’une association française pour l’aide au développe ment du documentaire, cet homme d’images est particulièrement sensible à la beauté poétique de cette ville, à la mixité d’histoires et de confessions de sa population. Alors qu’il aimerait s’intégrer pour longtemps dans le quar tier de Beyoglu, Simon perçoit peu à peu la montée de la violence, celle du terrorisme, mais aussi la menace d’un gouvernement autoritaire qui conduit le pays au putsch de juillet 2016, aux arrestations et à l’injustice. Ferhat, un ami kurde, vient cher cher de l’aide auprès de Simon car sa femme Anouche, interprète d’origine arménienne, a disparu. Alors que les deux hommes sillonnent la ville à sa recherche, une partie de la population marche déjà vers le Bosphore en agitant des drapeaux turcs à bout de bras. Sur le pont, des militaires en embuscade tirent sur la police nationale. Zynep, une étudiante de Simon, s’y trouve aussi.

Simon has been living in Istanbul with his family since 2013. A teacher for a French association that supports documentary making, this man of images is especially sensitive to the poetic beauty of this city and the diverse backgrounds and faiths of its inhabitants. Although he would like to settle down for the long term in the Beyoglu district, Simon is aware of the gradually increasing levels of violence – there is terrorism, but also the threat from an authoritarian government which ultimately leads to the putsch of July 2016 and to a swathe of arrests and injustices. Ferhat, a Kurdish friend, seeks out Simon’s help after his wife Anouche, an interpreter originally from Armenia, disappears. As the two men scour the city in search of her, some citizens are already marching towards the Bosphorus holding Turkish flags aloft. On the bridge, soldiers lying in ambush are shooting at the police. Zynep, one of Simon’s students, is present too.
