Bore’s New and Improved Well-being Campaign The BoreFit well-being campaign, launched in 2019, continues to be popular among the company’s seafarers. However, BORE Ltd’s HR department wanted to develop some new improvements, which led to the introduction of a new individual competition. text Pekka Karppanen, photos: Bore Ltd

T

he idea is not to engage in fierce competition but rather to maintain the well-being of the crew and thereby also improve maritime security, in line with a long-standing practice of the shipping company. – The company has found that participating in the well-being campaign fosters a positive work environment onboard. This light-hearted contest has encouraged our seafarers to keep in good shape, Sonja Koivisto from Bore Ltd’s HR department explains.

Captain Mikko Hakala of Bore Ltd’s main office also emphasises the importance of physical fitness. – Working on a ship calls for attentiveness and situational awareness. Physical exercise definitely supports this through improved rest and endurance, Hakala says. For seafarers, the threshold to participate in the BoreFit programme is lower when the shipping company is seen to support well-being in a visible way.

New Teams According to Sonja Koivisto, it is nevertheless important to have an active person on every ship to inspire the rest of the crew. M/S Bore Way, the first one of the newbuild vessels ordered by the shipping company, is due to arrive in Finland in June and will start operating from Finland to European trade areas under a charter agreement with UPM. – Orientation of key personnel always happens here in the main office.
