BUILDING TOGETHER
The last few years have proven that it is incumbent on all of us—as individuals and as an organization—to take an active role in supporting and upholding social and environmental principles. We made tremendous strides in those efforts in the last year, and our 2023 Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) Report highlights those commitments.
This year we shifted our report to better align with the “ESG” structure and standards that many global companies now use as a guide. From the day we started business, we have always considered it our responsibility to create a lasting and positive impact in our communities and on the environment. But now we are able to report on those commitments and activities more comprehensively through this ESG report.
We track our efforts as they relate to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. These globally acknowledged benchmarks have also helped us ensure we continue on a path that benefits our communities and the greater good.
James K. Donaghy Executive Chairman Robert Mullen CEOWhile our commitment to doing the right thing will not waver, this report will continue to live and breathe as our organization grows, adopts new practices, and adapts to our changing world. We will always strive to be better, and we hope this report will continue to reflect that ongoing work.

OUR PEOPLE
We are a people business, so supporting the health, wellness, and development of our employees is critical. From our continued work to foster diversity and inclusion to the wideranging career opportunities our network has to offer, we do everything we can to foster a happy, healthy, and fulfilled workforce.
#WeBuildCareers

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION, AND BELONGING
We are stronger together. Together is how we build rewarding careers, amazing spaces, and stronger communities.
We believe each of us has the responsibility to engage in courageous conversations, share opinions, and listen with patience and empathy.
At STO Building Group...
• We Strive for a culture where all feel they belong and where all have opportunities to be their best selves.
• We Draw on the differences in who we are, how we think, and what we experience.
• We Create environments where dialogue, solutions, and innovation can occur for our people, clients, and communities.
• We Value the talent of our team and the contributions each individual brings with their education, opinions, culture, ethnicity, race, sex, gender identity and expression, national origin, languages spoken, veteran status, color, religion, disability, sexual orientation, and beliefs.
• We Recognize that supporting diversity and engagement is the right thing to do for our people and our business.
• We Commit fully to a diverse, equitable, and inclusive work environment.
EXECUTIVE DEIB COUNCIL
Established in 2022 and chaired by CEO Bob Mullen, the Executive DEIB Council is comprised of business unit leadership, corporate services executives, and board members. The group’s goal is to successfully integrate our organization’s DEIB efforts, as led by DISC, with STO Building Group’s mission, operations, strategies, and business objectives. Together, they oversee the company’s diversity efforts, promote accountability, and communicate progress.
Diversity & Inclusion Steering Committee (DISC)
DISC brings together representatives from a diverse group of individuals across our US business units to tackle the challenges of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging and find potential ways to address them, from identifying training and education opportunities to developing our company policies and guidelines.
In 2022, STOBG’s Women in Construction network hosted a variety of fireside chats, table talks, and panels. From LA to NYC, men and women across our organization gathered to hear from internal and external leaders—from women executives to the women who run our project sites—and learn about their careers, their experiences, and the unique challenges facing women in construction today.
EMPOWERING WOMEN IN CONSTRUCTION

At STO Building Group, our people are our greatest asset. The mission of STO Building Group’s Women in Construction network is to promote gender equality by inspiring all employees through our pillars of charity, networking, and professional development.

From roundtables with industry leaders to conferences, speaking engagements, and charitable events, STOBG Women in Construction continues to grow a supportive work environment that encourages the exchange of ideas and perspectives from different points of view.

This year, the group held their first Annual Summit where female leaders from all of our companies—from Structure Tone’s Women in Construction groups to Layton Construction’s Women Inclusion Network (WIN)—came together to discuss how we can collectively implement positive changes and make our industry more diverse. Many of the STOBG Senior Executives, including CEO Bob Mullen and executive chairman James Donaghy, joined the summit for breakfast, providing an opportunity to speak freely about key topics related to women in construction. This visible allyship from our male leadership increases the group’s sense of belonging.

SUPPORTING DIVERSE BUSINESSES
At STO Building Group, we understand the importance of a collaborative team and are committed to building a more diverse and inclusive workforce in our offices, on our jobsites, and in our partnerships. Over the last year, STOBG’s Diversity & Inclusion Steering Committee (DISC) has continued to drive this change within our organization, while our local leaders focus on developing innovative ways to engage, mentor, and partner with minorityowned businesses within their communities. Here are some of the highlights:
“Having a room full of people from diverse backgrounds broadens the perspective of how to approach any situation. Diversity of thought naturally leads to innovation, bringing more creativity and better decision-making.”
AJAX BUILDING COMPANY
To maximize the opportunities for minority-, women-, and disadvantaged-owned business enterprises (MWDBEs) on their projects, Ajax focuses on developing mutually beneficial business relationships with diverse organizations, subcontractors, suppliers, and vendors through their Mentor/Protégé program. This program offers up-and-coming MWDBEs the opportunity to gain hands-on experience managing a large project, which they can use to build their resumes for future project opportunities.

LAYTON CONSTRUCTION
This year, Layton’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion team launched its Trade Partner Equity Program (TPEP) with the goal of increasing the diversity and strength of the company’s trade partners. Designed to build trust, eliminate barriers, and ultimately support the growth of MWDBEs, the TPEP is a seven-month program that includes monthly training sessions, mentorship, technical assistance, workshops, and intentional touchpoints. This program will ultimately result in a much larger, more diverse pool of quality trade partners prepared to bid on contracts.

LF DRISCOLL

In 2018, LFD launched the Driscoll Diversity and Inclusion Council (DDIC), a group of diverse contractors, diverse Chambers of Commerce, supplier and subcontractor advocate groups, a state government representative, and senior executives of LF Driscoll. The council aims to drive a cultural shift within the industry by removing the traditional barriers that prevent participation and growth for diverse companies within construction.

BUILDING OPPORTUNITY
Our companies are intent on helping turn dreams into reality—whether it’s preliminary renderings of a building design concept or the early days of a new construction professional’s career. That vision has inspired scholarship programs to create new pathways for traditionally disadvantaged populations to construction careers and help empower people to make a mark in their communities.

Govan Brown Futures Award.
This program provides $5,000 and an internship at Govan Brown to Black, Indigenous, and people of colour (BIPOC) to pursue their dreams within construction. Their modest goal is to reduce barriers for underrepresented groups in the construction industry and to play a supporting role in the stories of the future generation. Layton Construction HBCU Campus Engagement and Scholarship
Award. This new award program creates opportunities for students who are pursuing construction careers at six Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs): Florida A&M University, Prairie View A&M University, Tennessee State University, North Carolina A&T State University, and Howard University. In tandem with a scholarship, each student is offered a two-year internship and a fulltime position upon graduation. Read how this program brought intern Emory Norris to the Layton team here.

“I never had reservations about entering this field because I was female or of a certain cultural background. My ambition is to support others breaking these stereotypes and being a source of support to those also on paths less travelled.”—Aliya

“What really stood out to me was how Layton focuses on a family atmosphere. It’s not just about business—there’s an emphasis on making sure everyone is involved and feels welcomed.”—Emory

CEO ACTION

STO Building Group is a proud member of CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion—an organization founded on the belief that diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging is a societal issue, and that increasing levels of communication and collaboration are vital to driving change that matters.

In 2022, STOBG joined CEO Action’s commitment to extend one Day of Understanding to what are now Days of Understanding throughout the year. Our organization joined companies around the globe to actively work to foster understanding and advance DEIB in the workplace throughout the year.

DEIB PANELS

CEO ROUNDTABLE
CONSTRUCTION INCLUSION WEEK

UNCONSCIOUS BIAS TRAINING

Here are some of the ways we upheld that commitment.

Whether it was Hispanic Heritage Month or Women in Construction week, this year, STOBG seized every opportunity to hear from the diverse voices within our workforce. We held regular online DEIB panels that allowed staff to join in celebrating our colleagues’ cultures and learn about their experiences—both within our company and in the industry.
This year, CEO Bob Mullen hosted the first of many CEO Roundtable Discussions to support a more inclusive workplace where every voice matters. Through these conversations, Bob was able to connect with some of STOBG’s best and brightest talent— at all levels and from various business units—to learn about their experiences, unique challenges, and suggestions on how we can continue to strengthen our culture.
For the second consecutive year, STO Building Group celebrated Construction Inclusion Week— five days specifically dedicated to building awareness about the need to improve diversity and inclusion across our workforce and in our practices as an industry. Throughout the week, we covered five key areas of DEIB in construction: commitment and accountability, belonging, supplier diversity, workplace culture, and community engagement.
STO Building Group partnered with diversity and inclusion expert CJ Gross to explore the topic of unconscious bias. Gross led a virtual, organization-wide discussion to help us explore our own biases and understand how they affect our experiences with each other. Following this session, HR representatives and senior leaders led in-person discussions with smaller groups across STOBG offices to explore the topics brought up during the training.
STANDING WITH HUMANITY
We are builders, and we are committed to building better and stronger communities. We believe in each other and in effecting positive change, and we stand by that commitment in various ways.
A “JUST” CAUSE
BCCI became a Just Organization in 2014 upon the launch of the International Living Future Institutes’ (ILFI) social justice transparency platform. Just provides a framework to benchmark and build a culture that values diversity, equity, and inclusion. It’s a valuable recruiting tool that can help improve morale and retention and build a stronger brand. The tool demands rigorous honesty and thoughtful selfreflection as the team discovers and discloses data that is integral to their success.
SHOWING SUPPORT
In recognition of Juneteenth, BCCI launched a fundraiser to lend support to organizations dedicated to civil rights, community development, and education and training initiatives. The organizations chosen by BCCI’s Social Justice Focus Group (SJFG) to benefit from the fundraiser were the Equal Justice Initiative, the East Oakland Collective, and Bridge the Gap College Prep. Over $5,000 was raised split evenly between the three organizations.
SUPPORT FOR UKRAINE
Supporting communities in need has always been at our core, and we are proud of how the world has come together to help the Ukrainian people and push for peace. Offices across our organization, such as Structure Tone New Jersey and Structure Tone London, hosted events to raise money for humanitarian efforts in Ukraine.
#BUILTWITH PRIDE

At STO Building Group, we believe in fostering a culture where we all belong—and this sentiment was on full display as the STO Building Group family of companies showed up to celebrate Pride Month this year!
The Govan Brown team showed their support for the LGTBQIA2S+ community by marching together in Toronto’s 2022 Pride Parade.

INVESTING IN OUR FUTURE: EMPLOYEE OWNERSHIP
In 2017, STOBG reorganized the company’s ownership structure to pave the way for employee ownership. Today, all employees have the opportunity to buy shares in GISI, STOBG’s parent organization.
By shifting ownership to our employees, we’ve opened the door for our staff to become even more invested in the company’s success—literally. While our staff has always been dedicated to our values and our mission, allowing them to actually become owners of the company creates an even greater collective sense of pride and true ownership in the performance of their team and their colleagues.
This system is unique for our industry, allowing employees of all roles, seniority, and responsibilities to invest. Nearly half of our employees now own shares in the company, which they can purchase directly or through convenient payroll deduction.
Our share price has more than doubled since we started the program, and we continue to pay dividends each year. We see a bright future ahead.

HEALTH & WELLNESS
As a company that works with some of the leading companies in the world, we’ve learned a thing or two about the value of health and wellness in the workplace. Here are just a few examples.

WELL IN THE WORKPLACE
STO Building Group’s distinctive Safety 360⁰ program prioritizes the health, wellness, and safety of our staff, both on the jobsite and in the office. Our long-term partnerships with Delos and the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI) continue to help us ensure our focus on the health and well-being of our employees never waivers.
Last year, we showed our commitment to wellness by successfully renewing our San Francisco office’s WELL Certification and sharing lessons learned from other WELL Certified offices within our portfolio. In 2022, we’ve taken our commitment a step further by beginning the process of applying WELL at scale across our organization. WELL at scale is an organizational approach to workplace wellness that will measure the health performance of STO Building Group offices across our portfolio. This process will help us apply a people-first approach to our workspaces and allow us to apply the world’s leading healthfocused WELL strategies to maximize health outcomes as we continue our organization’s WELL journey.

FRESH AIR FRIDAYS IN DUBLIN
Studies show that being outdoors lowers levels of cortisol, a stress marker, and improves brain function. That’s why Structure Tone Dublin launched a “Fresh Air Fridays” initiative last year, encouraging employees to take out some time to go for a walk together. The initiative supports employees’ mental health, fosters camaraderie, and is simply a nice break in the day to enjoy the city and each other.
MENTAL HEALTH AT STOBG
YOU MATTER. WE CARE.
Although there is more awareness about mental health now than ever, it continues to be referred to as “the silent epidemic” for construction workers. In fact, suicide rates for people in our industry are three times higher than the United States national average.

At STOBG, we have spent the last year emphasizing to our employees and their colleagues that it’s okay not to be okay. As a natural extension of the caring work culture our Safety 360⁰ program has cultivated over the last several years, we established a Mental Health & Wellbeing Committee to ensure we are providing our workers and partners with mental health and wellness resources. The last year, in particular, has taught us the power of unity and caring about one another. Talking to someone helps—whether that’s a friend, family member, or healthcare professional.
Each of our offices offers an Employee Assistance Program (EAP), we have signage and communications across offices and jobsites, and our intranet hosts a number of trainings, programs, websites, and other resources to keep raising awareness of the challenges our industry faces when it comes to mental health—and to let people know they are not alone.
To recognize Suicide Prevention Awareness month this year, STO Building Group designed and distributed hard hat stickers that bear the national suicide prevention hotlines for each country we operate in. The goal of these stickers is to spread awareness on jobsites and let those in need know that they are not alone.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Our programs aim to develop careers, right from the start. Our apprenticeship, internship, and RPE programs bring students into the fold early, and we continue offering that kind of real-life experience and quality education through programs that evolve as their careers move forward.

Apprenticeships: We partner with local schools to recruit young people interested in working in the trades. Our apprentices work under the supervision of a superintendent for several years while we invest in helping them complete their certification or degree program. Through this program, they get on-the-job training while completing their education.
Internships: We offer internship and co-op opportunities throughout the year in virtually every discipline—from operations-based field positions to corporate service teams like finance and marketing. We put learning at the center of the intern experience, making sure their time here prepares them for the next step in their career.
Rotating Professional Engineer: Our “RPE” program is a formal rotation over two to three years across the major disciplines of field operations, safety, estimating/ purchasing, and engineering. These long-term work experiences, combined with training and networking opportunities, give those new to the industry a wellrounded view of the options for their careers, plus practical experience in all kinds of construction management tactics and techniques.
A NETWORK OF CAREER OPPORTUNITY
One of the benefits of being part of the STOBG family is the opportunity for new career challenges and growth. Employees can find new challenges, a new office location, or a new career path, right within our family of companies. #WeBuildCareers

LEARNING FOR LIFE: LEARNING 360°
At STOBG, we pride ourselves on being a learning organization. No matter your role or how long you’ve been in the business, there’s always more to learn. Learning 360° blends training from across our industry—as well as from our inhouse experts—on construction and business topics across the board. From specific software skills, to improving our client relations efforts, to our in-house safety training, Learning 360° is a collection of learning programs and curated curricula created to help our people and our business be the leaders of our industry, from the inside, out.
We believe that development starts with each employee owning their growth. Learning 360° provides a single place to manage their goals, performance, skills, expertise, industry certifications, and knowledge.
ENGAGING AND LISTENING
We’re on a mission to make sure STO Building Group remains a great place to work, where every employee feels valued, respected, engaged, and on a career path that inspires them. To help with that, we make sure to listen to our employees, through a variety of methods:

• Our annual employee engagement survey, administered in partnership with Gallup, aimed at truly engaging our workforce through powerful feedback and insightful data.
• A CEO Roundtable in which our CEO, Bob Mullen, meets face-to-face with a group of employees of all levels in different regions of the company to hear their feedback on how the company is handling everything from career opportunities to diversity and inclusion.
• Our Superintendent Roundtable, a representative group of superintendents from across our companies and across experience levels to share lessons learned and tackle some of the most pressing shared challenges they experience in the field.
These programs and many more provide more avenues for our employees to share their feedback and more opportunities for leaders of all levels to listen and take action.
CELEBRATING MILESTONES AT LAYTON CONSTRUCTION

Layton Construction celebrates their employees’ work anniversaries in a unique way. Every Layton employee is given a hard hat labeled with their name and the day they started with the company. Each year that passes, the employee gets a new hard hat sticker with the number of years they have worked for the organization.
At every five-year anniversary, Layton employees receive additional recognition and rewards that increase in value with years of service.
CARRYING ON A LEGACY
When we say we have a family culture, we mean it. This year, the RC Andersen family stepped in to help one of their own in a small way that has made a big impact.

In December 2021, superintendent Ed Condon alerted Terri Paliana, human resources manager at RC Andersen, that he wasn’t feeling well and may need a hospital stay. To make matters worse, his wife tested positive for COVID-19 during this period and was prohibited from seeing her husband. Throughout Condon’s time in the hospital, Paliana remained in touch with him.
“I became very close to him and the family,” says Paliana. “I just knew when he was alone, keeping in touch and being positive was the right thing to do.”
Unfortunately, Condon didn’t make it through. A grandfather of four, the Marlborough, Massachusetts native had been building a treehouse for the kids before his health complications put the project on hold. When the RC Andersen team saw pictures of Condon and his grandchildren working on the project, they knew how they could help.

“After reaching out to Ed’s wife for the OK, we tapped into our New England-based team to see who would be willing to pitch in to finish the job,” says Steve Sroka, RC Andersen vice president. “Everyone said, ‘Definitely. Yes.’”
Assistant superintendents Jennings Soccorso-McCoy and Ciaran O’Connor took the lead, working with partners to determine pricing and options, create conceptual designs, and handle safety upgrades. Driving out to Marlborough on the weekends, they added a ladder, a deck with super soakers on the railings, a slide, interior finishes like bean bag chairs, and more— getting a little help and lots of input from the grandchildren along the way.
“It was so great to see how quickly RC Andersen jumped on this opportunity to help,” says Soccorso-McCoy. “Ed used to tell us every day how far they were getting with it. I knew exactly how exciting this is because I got a treehouse when I was a kid, too. The joy this will bring to those kids will be astronomical.”
When RCA took over, the treehouse was roughly halfway done. Working together, the team built, painted, and fulfilled Ed Condon’s vision while demonstrating what family truly means.
“We wanted to make a memory for Ed’s legacy,” says Sroka. “It just feels so great to be part of this.”

OUR COMMUNITIES
At STOBG, we’ve built a community of employees who care about each other and those around them. Since our founding, we’ve considered creating a lasting and positive impact in our communities not only an essential part of our values, but also our responsibility.
#WeBuildCommunities

15,477+ HOURS VOLUNTEERED
$2.7M+ Additional $10M in fundraising donated through executive board memberships and charitable events
We build communities. We are so proud of our employees’ efforts to help those in need, from helping fight hunger, to providing muchneeded supplies to children, to raising money for disease-fighting research. Here we highlight just a handful of the many, many ways our employees and our organization invest in the success of those around us. While these numbers are impressive, they don’t include the millions of dollars our employees help raise through their roles as board members and volunteers in charitable organizations across our communities.
HOW DOES GOVAN BROWN’S GARDEN GROW?

Govan Brown marked another year of partnership with The Stop Community Food Centre, one of Canada’s first food banks. The Stop has seen enrollment in memberships increase 169% since the pandemic but donated food decrease by 22%. Govan Brown’s rooftop gardens produced a bountiful harvest thanks to their friends at MicroHabitat, and the fruits (and veg) of their labour were donated in part to The Stop. The garden is a living example of how little steps can amount to big change when we come together to support our communities!
FEED THE NEED GIVE ME SHELTER
Throughout the world, hunger continues to be a growing concern. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, millions of families have experienced food insecurity. In just two examples, this year Ajax and Structure Tone Boston hosted food drives to support local efforts.

The Honolulu Chapter of Habitat for Humanity hosts an annual Women in Construction Week build. Again this year Layton joined a team of allwahine (women) volunteers to build a home for a native Hawaiian family.

SUPPORTING FUTURE LEADERS
Throughout our organization, we pride ourselves on developing a culture of safety and family, which includes supporting our youth. From fostering mentorship to donating school supplies, here’s how we’ve continued to raise awareness of important charities and causes for children while supporting their growth into future leaders.

CURE APALOOZA

After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, Govan Brown’s Cureapalooza concert for charity made its comeback in 2022—and the show was better than ever!

The fourth annual Cureapalooza concert was hosted at the famed Phoenix Concert Theatre in downtown Toronto on October 27th, 2022 and was headlined by I Mother Earth and Sloan. The highly anticipated event was in support of Make-A-Wish Canada—an international organization that creates life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. Thanks to the Govan Brown team, the event’s generous sponsors, the incredible bands, and The Phoenix, Cureapalooza raised $70,000 for Make-A-Wish and a handful of other community causes— including The Stop Community Food Centre.

FIVE FORTHE FIGHT
“Gimme five” has a whole different meaning for Layton Construction. As a founding member of 5 For The Fight, Layton is working to help the organization raise money for cancer-fighting research—$5 at a time. This year, nearly 700 employees from across the company donated time, money, and energy to the cause, but Phoenix went big, raising a record $100,000 for the Phoenix Children’s Hospital. The team celebrated that milestone by building and delivering red wagons for the hospital. To date, Layton employees have raised nearly $1 million through 5 For The Fight, supporting multiple cancer research hospitals across the country. Learn more about Layton’s partnership with 5 For The Fight here.
STOBG CARES: 50 YEARS OF BUILDING COMMUNITY
Since its founding 50 years ago, creating lasting and positive impacts in the community has been an essential part of Structure Tone’s core values. From donating gifts during holiday toy drives, to volunteering at local food banks, to assisting in the aftermath of 9/11 and Hurricane Sandy, Structure Tone’s participation in and dedication to its community was a major focal point of the organization’s 50th anniversary in 2021.
As part of a “time capsule” display at the milestone celebration event, Structure Tone expressed gratitude to various community partners and commemorated their relationships by looking back at special events that have taken place over the past five decades and highlighting the permanent, positive impacts that have stemmed from them.
“Structure Tone’s dedication and commitment and generosity over the course of our partnership helped UWNYC provide disadvantaged students with learning resources to help them achieve academic and career success. It is our hope that our partnership will continue over Structure Tone’s next fifty years and beyond…we are grateful to be one of the organizations you support in your ongoing efforts to build a stronger community here in New York City,” writes Eric McDonnell, interim CEO, and Joseph A. Cabrera, vice chair, board of directors, United Way of New York City.
The Community exhibition showcased more than a dozen letters from charities, foundations, and other groups, all congratulating and thanking Structure Tone for its commitment and generosity over the years. These organizations included ACE Mentor Program, Boy Scouts of America, Catholic Charities, Friends of St. Dominic’s, MakeA-Wish Foundation, Muscular
Dystrophy Association, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Outreach Project Inc., Salvadori Center, Special Olympics New York, St. Francis Food Pantries and Shelters, and United Way of New York City.
The display also consisted of framed artwork created by the Inner City Scholarship Fund and Muscular Dystrophy Association, a special scouting outfit gifted by the Boy Scouts

of America, and a unified soccer ball to represent Structure Tone’s relationship with the Special Olympics, among other mementos. Photographs of Structure Tone teams at various athletic fundraisers, like Tunnel to Towers, American Heart Association’s Wall Street Run & Heart Walk, and Climb to the Top MS, were featured as well.
Sharing past moments with these incredible partners was
one of the most meaningful parts of celebrating Structure Tone’s golden anniversary. Mike Neary, Structure Tone president, agrees. “Since our founding, we’ve been committed to making a positive impact where we live and work. We’re proud of our legacy of building not just buildings, but also a community of employees who care about each other and those around them.”
COMPETING FOR A CAUSE

At STOBG, we’re involved in dozens of local and industry golf tournaments, road races, cycling relays, and other athletic events that support our communities. By putting our best feet forward, we continue to pay it forward through fitness to help those in need reach their own finish lines.

LONDON’S CHARITY SPORTIVE
For the second year in a row, Structure Tone London organized its Charity Sportive, a cycling event to raise funds and awareness for the Lighthouse Club, the only charity providing financial and emotional support to the construction community and their families in the UK & Ireland. Over 170 riders cycled 20, 40, or 70 miles, raising over £15,000.
“The Structure Tone cycling event is the highlight of the year,” said one participant. “Just when I didn’t think you could improve it from last year, you did. You guys have got this nailed! Long may it continue.”

STRUCTURE TONE DUBLIN: 4 PEAKS CHALLENGE
For the second year in a row, the Structure Tone Dublin team took on the 4 Peaks Challenge, climbing four of Ireland’s highest peaks within 24 hours in aid of St. Francis Hospice. The team successfully climbed Carrauntoohil in Co. Kerry, Mweelrea in Co. Sligo, Slieve Donard in Co. Down and Lugnaquilla in Co. Wicklow, reaching the summit of Lugnaquilla just within the 24hour goal.

$
The team raised €47,000 to help St. Francis Hospice provide palliative care to the people of North Dublin, at no cost.

BUILDING UP COMMUNITIES
Our employees personally serve their communities, and our work also helps strengthen and improve how and where people live, learn, and do business.
WHERE WE HEAL
A healthy community is a thriving community. Whether we’re building a small medical clinic or a state-of-the-art specialty care hospital wing, we understand every healthcare project has a direct impact on the level of care its patients receive—and we’re proud to help our clients deliver topquality care to the communities where we live and work. PARTNERSHIPS

Our strategic partnerships benefit not only us and those we partner with, but also our clients and our employees. Through these partnerships, we broaden our relevance; our clients benefit from the strength and knowledge that we bring to their projects, and our employees can access education and opportunities by being exposed to new perspectives and expertise. Plus, deepening ties with our organizational partners fosters collaboration and allows the STO Building Group to offer quality services and solutions that help our clients be more successful.
From non-profit organizations dedicated to community causes to leading green building and wellness associations, here are a few examples of the groups we partner with year after year.

AEC ANGELS: DRIVING INNOVATION FROM WITHIN

In recent years, the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) space has caught the eye of ambitious tech investors and innovative software developers alike. Determined to connect the fragmented industry and drive innovative change from within, STO Building Group joined fellow industry giants, Thornton Tomasetti, Syska Hennessy, and SHoP Architects, to form the AEC Angels, a venture fund covering seed through Series B + investments.
As leaders in their respective sectors, the AEC Angels platform draws on each member’s real-world experience to assess, test, and accelerate cuttingedge technologies that have potential to make the AEC industry more collaborative, efficient, and sustainable. Since forming in 2020, the group has invested in Reconstruct, FalkBuilt, OpenSpace, TestFit, ProPlanner, EnviroPower, Rhumbix, T2D2, Assembly OSM, and Green Badger.
OUR ENVIRONMENT
When it comes to our environment, STOBG cares. We’re committed not only to contributing to a sustainable, healthy built environment, but also managing the environmental impact of our own operations.
#WeBuildTheFuture

OUR ENVIRONMENTAL ROAD MAP
We’re committed to managing our environmental impact as an integral part of our operations. We are taking sustainable measures like the following across our organization and industry:
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Carbon Reduction: Our organization will strive to measure and analyze emissions from our operations. We will work with clients to implement solutions for GHG reductions by working toward efficiency improvements, including minimizing fuel usage while showing a preference toward electrification. We will request that suppliers and subcontractors provide Environmental Product Declarations for their materials.
Waste Reduction: We will minimize waste in our operations and business activities while striving to maximize diversion and reuse. We will dispose of waste conscientiously by using the standard operating procedure of “reduce, reuse, recycle.” This philosophy will be incorporated at both the jobsites and our facilities.
Pollution Prevention: Projects will adhere to the EPA (and/or local authority) standards for preventing pollution through our construction activities. These site-specific measures are often found in our sitespecific safety manuals in the Environmental Protection section.
Water & Energy Conservation: We will improve water and energy efficiencies as new technologies become available. Through our projects, we will work with our clients and partners to plan for responsible use and to offer suggestions that enhance water and energy conservation.
Wellness: Through our Safety 360⁰ program, we will address indoor air quality, hydration, nutrition, and mental health of our employees everywhere and our trade partners on the jobsite.
Leadership: We will engage and inspire our employees, clients, and partners to make positive impacts on the environment. We will educate our staff to make them aware of the environmental impacts of their work and how to minimize them. We will engage with technologies that help mitigate climate change. We will work to be an environmentally responsible neighbor and act to correct conditions that endanger health, safety, or the environment.
Biodiversity: We will help raise awareness around biodiversity, mitigation, and adaptation principles with our industry partners and, where applicable, take action. This will be demonstrated through commitments, efforts, and achievements.
Client Health & Safety: We require our visitors to comply with health and safety regulations applicable to STOBG employees and the governing STOBG location, as set out in our site-specific safety manual and STOBG Visitor Policy.

THE CONTRACTOR’S COMMITMENT
Officially launched as a piloting program by BuildingGreen last year, the Contractor’s Commitment is becoming the standard for evaluating a contractor’s sustainability progress—divided into a “good,” “better,” or “best” rating. So far, Abbott Construction, Ajax Building Company, BCCI Construction, and Structure Tone New York have signed the commitment, with several more STOBG companies in the works.
Contractors who sign the commitment pledge to meet a series of goals in five categories:
Carbon Reduction
How well a contractor reduces carbon emissions
Jobsite Wellness
Fostering wellness (clean air, nourishment, mental health, etc.) for anyone working in jobsite offices
Waste Management
Promoting waste diversion, whether seeing green building certification or not
Water Management
Assessing risks to prevent water pollution

UK Contractors Declare
Structure Tone London is participating in a similar effort, the UK Contractors Declare initiative. Totaling 11 principles, the declaration encourages companies to improve working methods that positively influence the environment around us—from raising awareness of the climate and biodiversity emergencies to adopting and supporting more regenerative principles to achieve net zero.
WE BUILD THE FUTURE
ST. CLOUD O&M FACILITY
LAYTON CARBONCURE CONCRETE
OLIVE VIEW UCLA MEDICAL CENTER
From targeting high-level certifications to piloting new, green technologies, our experts help our projects raise the bar in sustainable construction.

Totaling approximately 77,605sf, the Orlando Utilities Commission St. Cloud Operations & Maintenance Facility is a multiphase operations center project which includes a 55,000sf warehouse, a 22,000sf fleet repair facility for line trucks, and a fuel island. Managed by Ajax Building Company, the new operations and maintenance facility serves Orlando and parts of both Orange and Osceola counties by creating one central location.

For many clients, the carbon challenge is always top of mind. This year, Layton Construction poured more than 16,000yd3 of CarbonCure—an innovative concrete technology—on a 260,964sf, five-floor fulfillment center. CarbonCure’s technology introduces recycled CO₂ into fresh concrete without compromising performance and greatly reduced this project’s concrete carbon footprint.
Built by Abbott Construction, LA County’s Olive View Restorative Care Village was built through a modular construction approach and includes solar energy, reflective asphalt, and other features that helped earn LEED Gold certification.

INNOVATING ALWAYS
We build smarter—whether that’s trying new technologies or finding new ways to approach how we work. By combining new tools with tried-and-true techniques, we’re finding new ways to create a more efficient, more sustainable built environment.
GREEN TECH
One of the tools we use to help clients work toward their ESG goals is Green Badger, a cloud-based software platform designed to streamline and automate green construction compliance—everything from jobsite ESG tracking through LEED certification. Read more here.
DIVERTING WASTE, SMARTER & FASTER
When a life sciences consulting firm brought in Structure Tone to help build their Massachusetts headquarters, early on our team introduced a pilot waste diversion program that became a huge success. By routinely site-separating materials, the project went above and beyond typical industry waste standards. Read more here.
PASSIVE HOUSE & THE GC
Pavarini McGovern is using the Passive House approach within building benchmarking and methodologies as a way to better educate our project managers, superintendents, owners, and subcontractors, including integrating building envelope specialists into the project team. R ead more here.
LIVING BUILDING CHALLENGE
West Coast-based architecture firm Mithun partnered with Abbott Construction to renovate the company’s headquarters and pursue the Living Building Challenge (LBC) certification in the process. LBC-certified structures are self-sufficient, producing more energy than they use, and collect and treat all water on site. R ead more here.
MASS TIMBER
From adding mass timber components to skyscrapers to constructing corporate campuses from the ground up, STO Building Group teams across the US, Canada, and Europe have embraced mass timber construction for its environmental, operational, and wellness benefits. R ead more here.
CONTAMINATION TRANSFORMATION
In urban areas, many outdated properties remain idle, abandoned, or even condemned. Industrial developers often look to these unused sites as a potential location for a modern industrial warehouse. As warehouse specialists, repositioning environmentally impacted sites has become a core component of RC Andersen’s expertise. Read more here.
SAVING OUR BEES

Bees play an essential part in our ecosystem. That’s why offices across STO Building Group have committed to raising and conserving several bee colonies—from Canada to New York City. Govan Brown, the first in the STOBG family to introduce bees, raised over 100,000 bees in 2020 alone. Now, Structure Tone New York, along with Structure Tone Dublin and STO Mission Critical, have followed suit in buzzing it forward. These hard workers forage and pollinate neighboring plants and help keep up the biodiversity of the surrounding environment.

OUR CULTURE OF SAFETY
Our approach to safety is different. For us, safety is a passion, not an obligation. We believe that everyone in our workplaces and on our jobsites should be safe—from our employees and our workforce to our clients and their visitors. We live out this commitment and culture through our Safety 360° initiative.
#WeBuildSafe

SAFETY 360º PHILOSOPHY
Safety 360° is a pillar of STOBG’s identity. This philosophy embraces encouraging behavioral change and taking a 360-degree view of safety on the job and in our personal lives. The program empowers all of us—from the office to the jobsite—to be safety champions. The key principles of this philosophy are:

AWARENESS POSITIVITY
The program fosters a 360-degree view of safety, physically and philosophically. We expect active engagement from all employees in their immediate environment, as well as awareness of what’s happening above, below and next to them. It also means that we look out for one other’s physical and mental safety, speak up about potential safety issues, and are as invested in safety as our safety staff
SHARED RESPONSIBILITY
Each and every employee receives safety coaching. We believe that the best way to increase awareness and action is to increase responsibility, so our superintendents, project managers, and even our office-based employees are as engaged in safety as our dedicated safety department team members.
Safety 360° relies on positive reinforcement to inspire project teams and employees at all levels to achieve the highest level of safety. Company leaders set the example by discussing safety with their teams on a regular basis, walking through project sites, holding principals’ meetings with subcontractors, and hosting five-worker lunches. The program also recognizes projects, teams, and individuals for exemplary safety performance. Regular feedback, engagement, and coaching are at the program’s core and drive STOBG’s efforts to foster a lasting and positive safety culture across the organization.
BUILDING CULTURE BEHAVIOR
Behavior is the primary contributing cause of over 80% of accidents. With that in mind, the primary goal of our Safety 360° approach is to avoid risky behaviors altogether. Through behavior-based safety coaching, we are helping staff take a more active role in supporting a strong safety culture that solicits feedback, engages the workforce, and empowers people to make a difference.
Upon joining STO Building Group, new staff attend Safety 360° training to learn about our safety culture of caring and engagement. We also work with our clients to make sure they understand and play a role in this culture of safety. Our strong Safety 360° culture—which includes sharing email reminders, safety moments, safety stories, and lessons learned— resolutely supports our efforts to protect our staff, our workers, and the public.
EVERYBODY, EVERYWHERE, EVERY DAY
SAFETY 360º PERFORMANCE
Our Safety 360⁰ culture supports our journey of working with our trade partners to reduce—and ultimately eliminate— safety incidents across our industry. We’re proud of our commitment to safety, and our results prove it’s working. Our safety rates on jobsites consistently outperform industry averages in every category.

CELEBRATING SAFETY

Our culture of safety includes celebrating our successes. Across the organization, our companies have embraced programs to recognize teams and individuals who have gone above and beyond when it comes to safety. From the Cribbin’s Cup Challenge to the I’M SAFE program, our Safety 360º culture and safety awards programs continue to encourage safe behaviors, whether on jobsite or on the office.

In addition to Safety 360°, our corporate Safety and Health Program defines safety and loss prevention management and the implementation requirements for our construction operations. This manual, which is available as a reference at all STOBG offices and project sites, serves as the foundation for our project-specific programs. As part of the daily course of our construction management services, we monitor the standards and procedures for protecting the safety of the public, local residents, and our construction crews throughout the project. We conduct thorough audits to make sure our teams are adhering to our standards and procedures and that everyone has a voice in keeping our sites safe.
STOBG SAFETY COUNCIL
Initiated in 2020 by CEO Bob Mullen, our Safety Council includes executive leadership, industry partners, and client participants committed to fostering a safety culture based on open dialogue, support, engagement, and continuous leadership. The council aims to:
• Promote safety as everyone’s responsibility.
• Strive for zero workplace injuries.
• Encourage and reward positive behaviors.
• Continuously promote our culture internally and externally.
• Listen and carefully consider any safety concern raised by our team.
• Understand the needs and circumstances of others.
• Treat all individuals equitably, professionally, and with dignity and respect.
• Ensure that our policies support the culture we strive to achieve.
• Assess and investigate opportunities to create a safer work environment.
SHEQ Committee
Our board of directors’ Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality (SHEQ) committee focuses not only on those topics, but also training, social responsibility, measurement, and progress. This year, the committee:

• Addressed distractions to focus attention on core safety priorities
• Oversaw efforts to improve data analytics
• Required executive leadership engagement in all “lost time” accident reviews
AED/CPR TRAINING
At STO Building Group, safety is more than a commitment —it’s a passion. Across our organization, we have provided AED/CPR training to all of our employees. Our trainings, while important in saving a life, also emphasize our Safety 360⁰ culture—encouraging everybody, everywhere, every day to look out for one another within and beyond the workplace.
In 2022 alone, several of our employees put their CPR training the test. Read more about these stories on our website.

SAFETY &
Safety is a core value at STO Building Group, embodied in our Safety 360⁰ program. As part of our innovative culture, we are constantly searching for new ways to operate that reduce or eliminate our risk of injury to anyone on our construction sites. From wearable devices to using drones on jobsites, technology plays a crucial role in improving the safety of everyone in the industry.

Safety means looking out for one another, which has resulted in minimal injuries and incidents on RC Andersen project sites—a true testament to the company’s Safety 360° culture. Safety 360° gives everyone on the jobsite a voice and an opportunity to step back and focus on being conscious about safety. Through safety meetings and creating a dialogue about lessons learned, RC Andersen is able to make sure everyone, everywhere, every day gets home safe.
Listen to the RC Andersen team explain their approach to safety in their own words in this video. Learn more about how drones are helping our team improve teamwork, quality, and—most importantly—safety on the jobsite in this video.

OUR GOVERNANCE
We live by our values, and we’ve established a governance and compliance system to ensure we’re upholding those beliefs in everything we do. We honor these commitments not because we have to, but because it’s the right thing to do.
#WeBuildWithIntegrity

CLIENTS FIRST, INTEGRITY ALWAYS.
We take our commitment to ethical behavior seriously. STOBG’s industry-leading compliance and ethics program helps ensure we are living that commitment, from top-level executive strategy to day-to-day operations. Through our program, we strive to provide our employees with the tools they need to perform their jobs with integrity, to partner with likeminded companies that share our values, and to preserve the trust we’ve built in the marketplace and in our communities.
Our compliance and ethics program is built around six integrated pillars, at the heart of which is maintaining a culture of integrity—where the right kind of behavior is incentivized, where employees feel comfortable voicing their concerns, and where there is alignment between what we say as an organization and what we do.

PILLAR 1:
STRONG LEADERSHIP
In addition to the expertise, experience, and leadership of each executive within our family of companies, we rely on the oversight of our board of directors, which includes independent, outside directors, to help guide our organization and drive a culture of compliance at the highest level.
BOARD COMMITTEES:

“A commitment to ESG means that what we do—as an organization, as leaders, as employees, and as members of the community—is on full display. Ensuring that our actual behavior aligns with our stated values requires a culture of integrity, and it’s the mission of STOBG Compliance to drive and promote that culture.”—Leah

SVP/Director of Ethics, Compliance & Audit
BETTER TOGETHER: COMPLIANCE LIAISON PROGRAM
The mission of STOBG’s compliance liaison program is to bring compliance and ethics closer to employees. Our liaisons serve as communication conduits between the Compliance & Ethics Department and our companies, actively promoting a “speak up” culture and bringing local knowledge to the design and function of our Compliance & Ethics program.
Ramos,“Determine how you want to be seen by your coworkers, family, and friends. Write down those principles, hold yourself accountable, and make sure honesty is part of the plan.”—Katlyn Tracey, Pavarini North East Compliance Liaison
“At Structure Tone, the client is sacred. Our job is to steer them towards the best possible construction solutions with the highest level of integrity and transparency.”
—Jeff Hart, Structure Tone Boston Compliance Liaison

PILLAR 2: EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT

A culture of integrity—one that transcends written policy to influence everyday action—begins and ends with employees who are empowered to do the right thing. To help them take action, we give employees such tools as:

• A local compliance liaison

• An anonymous third-party helpline
• Accessible policies and guidance
• Communication campaigns throughout the year
2022 COMPLIANCE WEEK
We keep compliance and ethics top-of-mind throughout the year and shine a spotlight on our program during Compliance Week each November. Through this annual celebration, we celebrate our commitment to integrity in engaging (and fun) ways, whether that’s through compliance trivia tournaments, video vignettes, team member showcases, or lunch and learns.

PILLAR 3: POLICIES & GUIDANCE
The keystone to our commitment to doing the right thing is our Code of Conduct & Business Ethics. The Code applies to all STOBG employees and to members of the board of directors, agents, representatives, and others when acting for or on behalf of STOBG. Through our Supplier Code of Conduct, our vendors, subcontractors, suppliers, and other business partners must uphold the same ethical standards.
PILLAR 4: TRAINING, COMMUNICATION, AWARENESS
Having policies is one thing—understanding them is another. By hosting regular, mandatory training for staff, we make sure everyone understands STOBG’s standards of conduct and the legal requirements relevant to their job functions, risk profiles, and geographical area.
Our Code and other compliance and ethics policies are available on our website in English and Spanish. Also, to help employees learn key concepts with ease, each policy is accompanied by a quick reference guide that distills the most critical policy information into a ready-to-use one page sheet.
CODE OF CONDUCT & BUSINESS

ETHICS
EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY (EEO) & AFFIRMATIVE ACTION POLICY
NON-DISCRIMINATION & ANTI-HARASSMENT POLICY
ANTI-RETALIATION POLICY
As part of our Learning 360° approach, we offer individualized training curriculum that covers topics such as:
• abiding by our code of conduct
ANTI-SLAVERY & HUMAN TRAFFICKING POLICY
• preventing discrimination and harassment and fostering an inclusive workplace
GLOBAL ANTI-CORRUPTION MANUAL
• steering clear of corrupt practices and exercising caution in high-risk areas
• Management Foundations: training for first-line managers focused on how to be an ethical leader, create an inclusive environment, engage employees, handle employee relations issues, and manage performance.
SUPPLIER CODE OF CONDUCT
GIFTS & ENTERTAINMENT POLICY
• selecting and managing third parties
• following our construction management guidelines
PILLAR 5: INTERNAL CONTROLS
Having systems at every level of our operations to help recognize and prevent unethical behavior reminds us all—our employees, our clients, and our partners—that our culture of integrity is integrated into our business. These systems include proprietary project management software to track expenditures; a robust third-party due diligence and prequalification process; an anonymous, independent helpline; and a fully integrated compliance audit.
Third party due diligence. STOBG implements a multi-tiered and risk-based approach to prequalification and due diligence, which increases the company’s visibility into our business partners and reduces regulatory and reputational risk. STOBG partners with multiple third-party vendors to maximize data assessment. Based on their overall risk, subcontractors are continuously monitored through Exiger’s 3PM platform, which refreshes nightly and alerts in-house regulatory counsel to any potentially adverse information in real-time.
PILLAR 6: MONITORING & RISK ASSESSMENT

Our Compliance & Ethics program implements and assesses compliance with systems controls that are tailored specifically to the construction industry. These controls are regularly evaluated and tested to ensure they are calibrated to address specific risks we face, including through internal compliance audits, collaboration with our external ethics and compliance counsel and other subject matter experts, and benchmarking of our program through Ethisphere, a global leader in defining and advancing the standards of ethical business practices.
We also implement a regular enterprise risk assessment —a critical component to gauging corporate risk from macro, industry-wide issues down to specific business unit operational matters. The process includes approximately 200 indepth interviews with leaders across the organization and the creation of a heat map of potential risks found in the construction industry.
ETHISPHERE’S COMPLIANCE PROGRAM BENCHMARKING PROCESS
STOBG is a proud member of Ethisphere’s Business Ethics Leadership Alliance (BELA), a 300+ member strong, globally recognized organization of leading companies collaborating to share best practices in governance, risk management, compliance, and ethics. As a member, we benchmark key elements of our compliance program, including governance, third parties, and other risk topics, and monitor their maturity.

As builders, our role in shaping the environment is critical. That’s why we are looking to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals as a guide and benchmark for our social and environmental efforts. The following pages indicate how the programs and actions described in this report support these goals.
