THE CONTRACTOR’S COMMITMENT

Officially launched as a piloting program by BuildingGreen last year, the Contractor’s Commitment is becoming the standard for evaluating a contractor’s sustainability progress—divided into a “good,” “better,” or “best” rating. So far, Abbott Construction, Ajax Building Company, BCCI Construction, and Structure Tone New York have signed the commitment, with several more STOBG companies in the works.

Contractors who sign the commitment pledge to meet a series of goals in five categories:

Carbon Reduction

How well a contractor reduces carbon emissions

Jobsite Wellness

Fostering wellness (clean air, nourishment, mental health, etc.) for anyone working in jobsite offices

Waste Management

Promoting waste diversion, whether seeing green building certification or not

Water Management

Assessing risks to prevent water pollution

Material Selection

Assessing and selecting healthy and sustainable materials

Contractors Declare

Structure Tone London is participating in a similar effort, the UK Contractors Declare initiative. Totaling 11 principles, the declaration encourages companies to improve working methods that positively influence the environment around us—from raising awareness of the climate and biodiversity emergencies to adopting and supporting more regenerative principles to achieve net zero.
