I’d like to open this report by congratulating, and welcoming, your new Board of Directors for 2022, we have much of the Board voted back into various positions and we welcome a couple of new Members to positions of Vice Commodore Power and Vice Commodore Sail.
Board of Directors 2022: Chair Kerry Noyes Commodore Drew Jones Treasurer Garry Edwards
V.C. Sail Glenn Burrell
V.C. Power Brad Waters
Board Members: Todd Brooker, Greg Forgan-Smith, Ken Tregeagle, Chris Smith
Currently focused on monthly Strategic Planning sessions to bring the format into line with the Club’s vision and objectives, working towards targeted growth and marketing of the Club’s facilities, training and event options for both sail and power fraternities as well as our more social supporters. Looking ahead to capturing more of the Mega Yacht patronage as they plan their journeys for the year ahead are all
areas of focus.
At the Annual General Meeting in July, it was resolved to appoint Mr. Mathew Belcher OAM as the Club’s Patron. We are extremely pleased and honoured to have Mat representing Southport Yacht Club, he has been a Member of the Club since he was 7 years old and winning his first sailing trophies! He is selfless with his time, volunteering and giving back to the Club through mentoring and training sessions with the cadets and junior sailors at Hollywell, along with attending every function or official event that we request of him. Be sure to say congratulations and welcome to Mat should you see him in the Club.
On the water we have seen the Qoin $10,000 Navigation Challenge which was well received, and looks to be another great event in the Club’s annual calendar. I implore anyone looking for a new challenge on the water to get involved next year!
Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race was held for the first time in a few years, and whilst it was
a slow race getting to the Club, the sailors certainly knew how to enjoy reaching dry land when they arrived. We love hosting the finish for this race, and really missed it, we’re already looking forward to next years.
Coming up in the next few months we have Sail Past and Blessing of the Fleet in September, the opening of the sailing season and traditional blessing of the waters and fleet as they parade along the marina waterway and past the clubhouse. If you haven’t attended one before be sure to come along and watch this afternoon of tradition and activities.
Finally, as we leave the cold days behind, and head toward longer, warmer days ahead its time again to enjoy getting out on the water, or into the Club to enjoy those beautiful sunsets with friends.
Kerry Noyes ChairHi all Members and Supporters. This is my first article as your Commodore. It is with a great deal of pride that I take up the role of Commodore of this prestigious yacht club for the next two years and in this time, I will endeavour to represent you to the best of my ability.
I also thank you for all your support in the last 4 years in my role as Vice- Commodore Sail. The Manager, Brett James and his Management Team as well as the Sailing Office led by Simon Turpin as well as the Sailing Committee have also made my job much easier and I thank them all for their support over this time and look forward to working with them in the next 2 years.
Our Club is in a great position moving forward. The Board has great plans for improvements for the benefit of all Members and Supporters and I am looking forward to being involved. We have started with the completion of the Mega Yacht wharf and now as many will have seen new carpet and tiles in the main Clubhouse downstairs area. These changes only
enhance the pleasurable experience for our Members, Supporters and many visitors when dining or just meeting up for a drink. Every year we win awards at the Qld Clubs’ awards nights for our location, food and our service and it is easy to see why. Our Club has now become one of THE places to visit on the Gold Coast!
Along with Qoin Sail Paradise regatta there is a new series of racing organised with SYC, RQYS and QCYC called the Summer of Sail. This will be a series of races to be sailed in the spring and summer. A great step forward for our offshore fleets with more competitive racing available.
Our power boaties are also increasing their participation in both logging and cruising events, and we look forward to them winning back the Goodwill Cup. If anyone wants to join in with their vessel and learn how to log, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Summer is almost here, and Dux has never looked better so Gold Members
aim to visit our island venue. Don’t forget to keep abreast of all the events our Club has to offer in the weekly enews as the new season begins in September with the Blessing of the Fleet.
Lastly, I wish to congratulate our Past Junior Vice-Commodore, Addison Newlan on her participation in the Open Skiff World Championships recently held in France. Addie competed in a fleet of 153 and finished 22nd overall, an exceptional result in her first international regatta. She also had a first, a second and 2 third placings in her 14 races. We are so proud of her representing SYC and Australia and look forward to seeing her progression in this amazing sport.
Another strong 6 months of trading has seen many highlights along with its challenges. Restaurant bookings have continued to be consistent and with staff resources becoming harder Australia wide, the Club has had to make some changes to accommodate Members/Supporters. As you’re aware Friday, Saturday and Sunday are only available to Members/ Supporters for bookings until 24hrs before. The trail seems to be working well while not impacting the trade. Head Chef Chris has been able to keep a strong team which has been a great support to front of house which has been dealing with sick staff.
The Club has once again hosted some excellent events such as “The Black Sorrows”, Oatley Wine Dinner, Power Boat and Sailing Presentations, Mother’s Day and several Sailing Events. Looking forward we have once again “The Black Sorrows”, Eagles Show, Melbourne Cup and don’t forget New Year’s Eve. Events are always booked out due to the size of the room so
get in early once you see events released.
Sailing at all venues is starting to get back on track after some terrible weather. Qoin Sail Paradise is shaping up to be another great event with the organising committee well on track to deliver something special. Qoin Sail Paradise will now be a part of the “Summer of Sailing Series Australia” which is a combination of events with the support of Royal Queensland and Queensland Cruising Yacht Club. Whoever wins this series will definitely have some bragging rights. Sydney to Gold Coast had a return after 3yrs and what a great feeling the event had around the Club. We really did miss that event and the feeling of a Yacht Club!
One of my favourite areas of the Club is Dux, if you haven’t experienced Dux make sure you do. The Board have just installed a new generator and solar system along with P.C. Ken Tregeagle building a new walkway entry. Brian the caretaker continues to improve the site and is an asset to SYC.
Marina still has a strong waiting list, focus is on filling the new Mega Yacht Berth which has been difficult due to the Queensland Borders being the last to open internationally. We should see Super Yachts closer to the end of the year but, as you have seen, we continue to place vessels on the berth when requested. The berth will be used over Sydney to Gold Coast and Sail Paradise each year, so come on down and see some racing yachts.
I would like to welcome the new Board and also thank Peter Brown for his hard work over the years. We also welcome Mr. Mat Belcher OAM to the position of Club Patron as voted at the AGM. Mat is an amazing ambassador for not only sailing, and the Gold Coast, but for your Club as well. Congratulations to all.
Hi to all Members and Supporters of Southport Yacht Club.
I am honoured to be appointed your Vice Commodore of Sail. For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Glenn Burrell. I am the owner and skipper of Black Diamond. Black Diamond is a Reichel Pugh 42 racing yacht that I have owned since August 2019.
As this is my first iNSYnC News article, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to those Members and Supporters that I haven’t met yet. Briefly, I grew up in Sydney where I started sailing at the age of 5 on my Mum and Dad’s 35 feet sloop, Ozone. At the age of 7, I sailed Manly Juniors and progressed into Flying Elevens. After a “short” break of 8 years from sailing, I went on to racing Keel Boats out of Middle Harbour Yacht Club until I moved to QLD at the age of 29. I didn’t do a lot of sailing while priorities changed to raising a family on the Gold Coast. In 2013, I brought my Father’s boat up from Sydney and have been sailing out of Southport Yacht Club in the Offshore and Twilight Divisions ever since.
I am writing this article from my hotel room in the beautiful Whitsunday Islands. Black Diamond, along with three other SYC boats, Negotiator, skippered by Cameron Boogaerdt, Yeah Baby, skippered by Andy Lamont and She, skippered by Phil Bell have just finished racing in the Brisbane
to Hamilton Island Race hosted by our friends at Royal Queensland Yacht Club. Unfortunately. Yeah Baby were forced to retire with rudder issues and safely sailed her to Gladstone Harbour where Andy and the crew are racing the clock to have her repaired in time to make Hamilton Island Race Week. We wish them well.
SYC was strongly represented with 20 boats competing at Hamilton Island Race Week and approximately 6 SYC boats competing at Airlie Beach Race Week. They all did us proud and raced hard and fair, and of course, fast in each of their categories and divisions.
Allowing time for our fleet who are competing in the northern regattas, our Summer Offshore series will commence on Sunday September 25th with a “Round the Cans” day, which I am sure will be well attended as our fleet continues to grow. The Inshore Summer series kicks off on September 3rd. I look forward to getting to know more of the Inshore Fleet as my VC role progresses into the future.
Our annual Sail Past and blessing of the fleet was scheduled for Saturday September 10th. The day, being held every year, is always one of the more popular events in the SYC Calendar. A flotilla of vessels sail past the Flag officers, Father Don, as well as Members and guests all dressed up in their finest party and parade
Glenn Burrelldecorations. Karen, my wife, and I loved meeting all of you that attended this year.
As our Club continues to grow its’ fleet and many more Members are joining boats as crew, our dedicated team of staff and Volunteers in the sailing office continue to provide more racing opportunities. While the races conducted by SYC are for the benefit of Members and guests, we also encourage visiting boats from all sailing clubs to join our races as much as possible. With this in mind, SYC has joined forces with RQYS and QCYC to invite competing yachts to enter the Qoin Sail Paradise 2023 and The Summer of Sailing Series Australia. This series is a six-race event which includes a 220nm race that also stands as a qualifying race for crews intending to sail in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race starting on Boxing Day. The series also incorporates, the annual Ted Elkes Regatta, the inaugural Brisbane to Paradise Yacht race, Qoin Sail Paradise, Julian Rocks Yacht Race as well as the Surf to City Offshore Yacht Race.
Again it was great to see you all at the 2022 Sail Past and Blessing of the Fleet, if you couldn’t make it on the day, come visit us sooner rather than later.
Glenn Burrell VC SailI would like to start this update by thanking Peter Brown for his leadership as VC(Power) for the last couple of years. Peter remains a staunch advocate for SYC Powerboaters and I look forward to working with Peter over the coming years.
Since our last iN SYnC, SYC Powerboaters have been busy enjoying the last of the season’s cruises, successfully running the Qoin $10,000 Navigation Challenge, competing in the final events of the Navigation calendar, and celebrating all of that at our annual Power Boat dinner. The PB Committee has also been busy preparing our Cruising and Navigation seasons for 2022-23 (calendar available on the website) as well as preparing our team to contest the annual Goodwill Cup against RQYS.
In June we held an information session for Members where we presented overviews of Navigation and Cruising. If you are interested in either of these activities, please contact me via Reception. The information session will become an annual event. We also arranged for the Coast Guard to conduct a VHF radio course which allowed Members to gain their radio operator qualifications. Keep an eye on e-news for info about future radio courses.
Last season’s Club Championship was hotly contested, with two boats tied on points with just one event to run. More chasers are expected in the coming season.

The annual Sydney to Gold Coast Ocean Yacht Race has become one of Australia’s most prestigious bluewater yachting events. It attracts large fields which include many of this country’s state-of-the-art racing vessels. The Sydney Gold Coast Ocean Yacht Race was the brainchild of flamboyant and popular Southport Yacht Club Member, Richard Van Coeverden. Richard was born in The Netherlands and made a name for himself in the building industry firstly in Canberra and then on the Gold Coast.
Richard conceived the idea of the Sydney Gold Coast Race. During his many trips down the east coast of Australia, he formed a close friendship with another Dutchman, Peter Rysdyk of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia situated at Sydney’s Rushcutters Bay. Together they devised the race which previously had not been possible due to the fact Southport lacked an all-weather access to the sea. The longawaited construction of the seaway was completed in the
Eighty-three yachts, a vast field, departed Sydney in August 1986 fanned by a brisk NE headwind and Richard’s sloop, “Jimmie Blacksmith”, was among the first seven boats out of the harbour... The race was eventually won by Sydney maxi “ Apollo” skippered by Jack Rooklyn who took both line and handicap honours. Peter Rysdyk generously donated a handheld Hewlett Packard computer, almost unheard of at the time, to the SYC through Richard, for use in calculating handicaps.
Pictured in the cockpit of Richard’s 40-foot Adams sloop, “Jimmie Blacksmith”, prior to the start of the race is, former Premier of Queensland and official starter, Sir Joh Bjelke Petersen with skipper Richard Van Coeverden. The crew members pictured below are Keith Bow, Terry Stephenson, Alan Creswell and John (J T) Taylor.
It’s magnificent to be out on the ocean, sailing through the waves on a perfect tack with the crew leaning out enjoying the sea spray blasts. Then hoisting the spinnaker as you turn to cruise downwind, flowing in harmony with nature and feeling in control of your ship. But the ocean has its ups and downs and when the weather turns wild it takes an experienced skipper to sail safely through a gale. Those challenging conditions reveal the great captains.
A great captain is not only clear about their destination and how to get there, but they also know how to navigate safely through a storm. They creatively innovate to solve problems along the way, and they know that getting the right people on the ship and retaining them is the number one factor to enjoying many safe and successful journeys.
The same applies to business leadership.
When you ask a great captain or a great organisational leader how they became great, you’ll hear stories of the many experiences and challenges they had to overcome, as well as the mentors who guided and taught them along the way. It becomes clear that their journey has been one of steady evolution.

Mother Nature and Winter 2022 has not been ideal for us Sailors….however to put it into perspective, abandoning a number of Divisional Races due to the major weather events and ‘no wind issues’ (which have occurred over the past few months) is manageable from a rescheduling and operations point of view. Our thoughts go out to those in our community who are still continuing to truly struggle during these challenging times and we thank our Sailing Community for their patience and understanding.
That said – over the past 4 months we have managed to activate one hundred and twenty six (126) Divisional Races including SYC Special Events together with Qld State & Australasian Championships.
We are all looking forward to the next 6 months with fingers and toes crossed we certainly have a full calendar of scheduled Divisional Racing and Special Events/Regattas including Southport’s Flagship Event Qoin Sail Paradise 2023 which is now a part of our new Sailing Series – The Summer of Sailing Series Australia (SSSA).
We announced earlier this year that following the success of our 2022 Qoin Sail Paradise Regatta, coupled with positive feedback from competitors, sponsors and all involved, that Qoin Sail Paradise 2023 will be “bigger and better than ever” come January 2, 2023.
We also announced earlier this year the inception of a new Sailing Series, The Summer of Sailing Series Australia. The series will be jointly hosted by Southport Yacht Club, Queensland Cruising Yacht Club and Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron. We are extremely excited about this new series and thrilled to be working with our Club Partners at Queensland Cruising Yacht Club and Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron to offer this fantastic array of sailing events to local, interstate, and international skippers and crew to participate in. Series will be held over 3 months from November 2022 through to January 2023 and will include:
1. The SEQ Ocean Qualifying Yacht Race 2. The Ted Elkes Memorial Regatta (Inc. The Australian Sailing QLD Yachting Champs) 3. The Brisbane to Paradise Yacht Race 4. Qoin Sail Paradise 2023 5. The Julian Rocks Yacht Race 6. The Surf to City Yacht Race (Ocean Course)
We are hopeful that the combined allure of free berthing, $1,000 SYC Club Cash, Trophy’s Accolades and most importantly….Bragging Rights, will attract boats in a number of categories for these fantastic sailing events. Further information about the Summer of Sailing Series Australia can be obtained by scanning the QRC or by emailing: sailing.admin@sycgc.com.au

Southport Yacht Club continues to support and offer the Australian Sailing Sea Safety Survival Course (SSSC) for SYC Skippers and Crew of our offshore fleets. The normal industry cost for this course is considerable at $550 per student however SYC is changing the culture of safety by subsidising this cost for our Members. Over the last twelve months, we have held three (3) SSSC training courses and qualified twenty-seven (27) SYC Members with their SSSC qualification. This initiative has only been viable through the support and generosity of our SSSC Chief Instructor Michael Spies who generously donates his time and expertise. Michael has been instrumental in changing the culture of safety in Offshore Racing. Survival at Sea is a crucial part of offshore racing and we believe that this course should be for all people who venture in offshore racing, not just a select few who can only afford to do it. Great Circle Marine Safety Equipment have also supported this initiative in providing life rafts for the pool drills and the generosity from our Members Andy Lamont and Glenn Burrell who have also contributed life rafts and flares for the course.
If you have experience in offshore racing with a passion for safety and training with some spare time to give back to our Sport, please see myself so as we can assist you in becoming a qualified SSSC Instructor so as we can help more of our Members in the coming years.
The Australian Sailing Safety Equipment Audits renewal program for 2022/2023 was very well received and we thank all Skippers (and our fantastic Volunteer Auditors) for their co-ordination of achieving this by the deadline of the 31st July 2022. A reminder that if you have not submitted an up-to-date certified Safety Equipment Audit Form to both your Top Yacht Profile - you are not eligible to race at the club. Please do not hesitate to contact us in the Sailing Office if you need any assistance with this.
Wishing you all a fantastic ‘Summer of Sailing’, See you on the water.
Simon Turpin Sailing Operations ManagerWell, it was a MASSIVE few days in early August, when the Club once again hosted the arriving yachts, skippers and crew competing in the 2022 Noakes Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race. We ended up with 62 yachts being berthed at SYC it was quite a sight! A massive THANK YOU again to our Volunteers who took care of everything from the Radio Control Room to Support Boat logistics. Our teams at SYC did us proud working tirelessly over the 4 days showcasing our beautiful yacht club well done to all!
2022 has been a wild year for teammate Tom Needham and myself as it is our first year being able to race overseas again since the beginning of Covid in early 2020. With 2 European seasons of racing missed, us and most of the Australian 49er squad struggled to perform in the big fleets which we expected to be the difficulty with returning to racing. We had 2 events earlier this year, the first in Palma, Spain and the second in Hyere, France. In those regattas we finished 21st and 18th respectively. Not the results or performances we plan to repeat.
After a quick trip back to Australia to earn funds as well as have some brief time off, we returned to Europe with eagerness to push forward from where we started. This trip to Europe included 3 events: Allianz Regatta in the Netherlands, Kiel Week in Germany and the 49er European Championships in Denmark.
I am very pleased to report that we found some much needed form and made massive gains in our performance processes at these regattas. Firstly in Allianz, we didn’t blow the fleet away but laid some ground work in our race processes meanwhile finishing 12th in the event.
We then drove up to Germany for Kiel Week where we put in some serious hours in our pre-regatta training as we felt we needed to, and it paid off! It was a long week with varied conditions, but we climbed through the fleet all week to qualify for our first ever medal race (top 10 final) as a team! We then managed to race well in the final to take 4th overall. This result brought me some relief, knowing that we do have the potential when we put our work into the right areas!
The final regatta was the European Championships in Denmark which is one of 2 major events in our calendar alongside the World Championships. Another very long week with 6 straight days of racing in a mix of 3-28kts and 95 boats. After chipping away and diligently following our processes day after day, we again qualified for the top 10 medal race. This was a massive break-through for us as a team because this proves that we have some consistency in our performance and the previous 4th place in Kiel wasn’t a one-off result. The only bitter part of this regatta was the finish where we fell from 7th overall to 9th due to a slow performance in the medal race itself.
With this result under our belt we began preparations for the World Championships which took place in Halifax, Canada. It was a gruelling 6 days and 15 races from August 31st to September 5th. We proudly fought and finished 28th place out of 65 tough competitors from around the world. Tom Needham and I came back to receive “QLDs Male Sailor of the Year 2022” Award, which was an immense honor. A massive thank you to Southport Yacht Club and its Members for continuing to support me in my endeavour to be our next Olympian!
Your Southport Yacht Club Sailing Office Team have several primary priorities: 1. Manage Sailing Divisional Races and Programs and Special Events/Regattas 2. Manage and Activate Learn to Sail Programs (Junior and Senior) and 3. Support Sailing Members and to tell their sailing stories – our favourite part ☺ The list goes on… and covers everything from management of Boat Bailments through to Support Boat Maintenance (but that’s the boring stuff).
To say it’s been an interesting and busy 6 months in Sailing at Southport Yacht Club would be a massive understatement and the next 6 months is set to be even more interesting and bigger! We’ve had gale force winds, super swells, and torrential rain events on a continual basis and if that’s not challenging enough – then there’s the little to no wind occurrences, that have all resulted in numerous divisional and special event abandonments and reschedules – All this aside, we’ve all managed to stay relatively sane during the process ☺
Speaking of Sanity…………..it probably won’t surprise our regular sailors, that a sailing does wonders for the soul and the mind and that time spent on the sea is immensely therapeutic. The dreaded ‘Covid’ is still ‘hanging around’ and it has impacted so many of us (both physically and mentally), making things that little bit more challenging to operate at times. If Covid and these stressful times has taught us anything, it’s the awareness that it’s “OK to not be OK”! Sailing allows you to get away from our overstimulated daily lives and helps to disconnect with the chaos and stresses of life (for a short while anyway) it also connects us with the peacefulness of nature, and this brings us to our ‘Learn to Sail Programs’….
For those ‘non sailing’ readers …learning to sail can focus the mind and body ‘in the moment’ and learning a new skill also allows you to momentarily leave your comfort zone and immerse your thoughts on the experience of being out on the water. That's not forgetting the benefits of connecting with others and the social support, you receive through being a member of a crew on a boat and a sailing club - spending time with others.
Sailing may seem like pleasure of the wealthy but – that’s not the case at Southport Yacht Club – we have an amazing down-to-earth Club, and our Hollywell and Main Beach Club Houses are warm, welcoming, and very social. Southport Yacht Club has some fantastic opportunities to not only ‘Learn to Sail’ but to crew on some of our Skippers Boats. If you are not boat owner and are interested in the sport of sailing - we make it easy and affordable for you to try out Sailing without having to immediately subscribe to annual Membership. Southport Yacht Club provides a “SailPASS Membership” at a minimal cost, which then enables you to access crewing opportunities for sailing on our beautiful Gold Coast waterways. Crewing opportunities are available on a Wednesday and Thursday, as a part of our Inshore Division and Twilight Racing Programs.

It has been fantastic to see an increase in Junior Fleet participation numbers over the past 6 months - Sundays and our Thursday Squad Training is very busy and we will see an increase in numbers again when summer hits. We look forward to seeing our ‘juniors’ journey’, through their Sailing Pathways at SYC.
This year we introduced the Sip n Sail series of fun and casual catch up / episodes with our sailing Members, Volunteers, and staff. We want to express our sincere thanks to Ben Downey, who has gone above and beyond in chasing you down ☺ and extracting some fantastic stories of your sailing journeys and adventures. A big thanks to those who have been a part of this so far – many more to come - Your Stories Make Our Club!

REMEMBER - participation in a minimum of 60% of the Events listed in the respective Divisional and Special Sailing Calendars is required to adhere to Bailment Conditions.
Shout out to our regular FB contributors who have shared some of the most picturesque and enjoyable memories over the past few months and a special mention to our regular contributors Linda Caerdinael and Lori Clements (love your work girls!). Remember – if you are a Skipper or a registered Crew member of any of our Divisional Races, there are group Facebook pages you are welcome to join! (you must be an SYC Member) – they include: • Southport Yacht Club Inshore Division • Southport Yacht Club Offshore & Twilight Divisions • Southport Yacht Club Off The Beach Multihull Division • Southport Yacht Club Dinghy Division
It’s been a relatively quiet winter for Sailability Gold Coast (SGC) with numbers at about 60% of our busiest summer day. Some cli ents have stayed away because of the particularly colder winter this year and the flu season. This has conveniently matched our volunteer numbers as finally people can travel again and see fam ily overseas which is great, we also have SGC Volunteers traveling around Australia. We hope that coming into summer our partici pation rate increases. A huge thank you to all Volunteers that have provided a wonderful and safe sailing experience for the 50/60 clients plus their carer’s we averaged every week this winter. 64 clients last Tuesday!!
Sailability Gold Coast held a successful BBQ at the Arundel Bun nings on Saturday the 30th of July. We hope to continue regular Bunnings BBQs as the day was such a success! Not only does it give SGC fabulous exposure, but it also fits well with our regular weekly BBQ at Hollywell on Sailability Tuesdays for any leftover stock. The recent Bunning’s price increase from $2.50 to $3.50 did not deter shoppers from stopping by for a sausage. A huge thank you to all the Sailability Volunteers involved and their partners.
Sailability also operates on a smaller scale on Thursday’s teaching people with disabilities to sail independently. We also use Thurs days to train our Volunteers in sailing a 303 Access as well as yacht training for crew aboard our two yachts Spirit and Hope. The Pon toon boat “Freedom” as recently been utilised on a Thursday to try and maximise the vessels use.
Sailability is currently taking bookings on Thursday’s from 9:00am with the first trip leaving at around 9:30/10:00am. “Freedom” car ries ten people with eight passengers and two crew. The highlight of “Freedom” is that it can take up to three people with disabilities remaining in their wheelchairs. Please contact Di Hunt 0421 049 774 to make a single or group booking.
SGC recently purchased a new Liberty thanks to a $10 000 do nation from Commonwealth Bank. The Liberty will sit along side our fleet of twelve 303 Access dinghy’s and two Liberty’s. One is privately owned by the Hain Family for Brendan to sail, SYC now has two and depending on demand may look at getting three more to make a fleet of six Libertys. Neil Rowsthorn currently sails the new liberty on a Thursday to train for international re gattas, and racing on Sundays. There is also an exciting push now for disabled and abled sailors alike to race the Liberty and the 303’s on Sundays. This hasn’t happened in ten years since I joined in 2012, and it’s very pleasing that the opportunity for people with disabilities to race has returned outside of the SKUD racing which the QPSA continues to provide.
SGC is working with SYC and the Para World Sailing Committee on preparations for the Para World Sailing Championships for athletes with intellectual impairment being held as part of the Virtus Oceania Asia Games in November. I will be sure to take plenty of pictures for the next issue of iN SYnC.
Sailability Queensland Conference is on the Sunshine Coast from Sept 7- 9. Several Members of the Committee will be at tending and looking forward to working closing with other clubs from all over QLD, there are 13 active Sailability clubs in QLD. Many of our Volunteers that travel north come back with tales of the great things that other clubs are doing. We hope to contin ue to improve the way we operate to meet best practice.
If you would like to Volunteer at Sailability please contact us on 0407 979 666 or view our website at www.sailabilitygc.org
Stay safe and see you on the water
Benjamin Noonan President SGCThe newest addition to the SYC facilities, our Mega Yacht wharf, has now been in operation for nine months, and is proving to be a very beneficial investment to Southport Yacht Club, the Gold Coast and Australia as a tourist destination.
In less than a year we have seen twenty-four Super Yachts use the berth as their destination whilst on the Gold Coast, refuelling, and purchasing local provisions. We have also seen this area utilised for functions and events, such as the Opening Cocktail Party in a so cial aspect, and the prestigious long running Sydney to Gold Coast Yacht Race in a competitive realm with the vessels berthing along the wharf.
Recently a seventy-metre commercial dredge was an impressive sight to see on the wharf, taking on fuel and provisions before head ing out again, showing us that the word is getting out, whether it’s for travel or work, it shows us that the berth is being utilised by all facets of the Marine fraternity.
Southport Yacht Club is an official Customs Clearance marina, and as such the Mega Yacht Berth has been added as a clearance berth, complimenting the six Super Yacht berths that already hold that rating.
The overall infrastructure of the berth, with set up for drive on pontoons, and the service road for support vehicles to reverse down for ease of bunkering fuel to vessels, or load up on supplies, along with the 600-amp power which is the biggest in Australia, all have received great feedback from Captains and Crew, stating that it is the best berth set up they have been to, this testimonial includes feedback from two International Captains, who travel the world and say we are the best they have seen. The only issue we have now, is that since the word is out every Captain that contacts SYC to book a berth asks to be put on the Mega Yacht Berth, rather than any of the other berths within the Marina. It’s not such a bad problem to have!
The Club have not had any issues with the build of the service road, or the pontoons, this structure is something that should make our Members, MGN Civil and Superior Jetties, very proud of what they have produced, a real showcase facility that will be with us for many, many years to come.

The Southport Yacht Club powerboat official season of events commences in September with Sail Past and Blessing of the Fleet on 10th September 2022. The cruising season for the SYC Cruising Flotilla spans the period between August through the summer and ends in June the following year. Generally, the committee plan up to twelve cruises throughout the year, which includes the Christmas Luncheon at Main Beach.
Since the last edition of InSync we have held several cruises including the Valentine’s Day Cruise 12th - 16th February, which was led by Phil Barlow. The cruise started at Sanctuary Cove and moved to Tiger Mullet Channel and then on to Jacobs Well for Valentine’s Day lunch at Harrigan’s Calypso Bay, where 26 people sat down to lunch. The fleet relocated to Dux for an afternoon of fun. The theme for the afternoon was “What you were wearing when the ship went down”. A prize was given to the best costume.
The next cruise was due to visit the Brisbane River between 5th - 13th March, this event was cancelled due to severe flooding.
We planned a Sandy Straits Cruise between 9th April - 2nd May 2022. Due to the swell left behind by ex-tropical cyclone Fili, the open water section from Bribie to Mooloolaba was postponed in the hope that over day or two the seas would begin to abate. After meeting at Canaipa Point the fleet moved to Karragarra Channel and lunched at the MacLeay Island Hotel.
The following day the fleet headed to Bribie Island. Strong winds and large swells were continuing to make the entrance to the Mooloolah River dangerous with breaking waves on the outer bar. Several of our group were slower boats incapable of speeds needed to cross safely. As a result, the taller boats spent time in Moreton Bay
at Little Sandhills and the Blue Hole, whilst the smaller boats went under the bridge at Bribie and into the passage anchoring for three nights at Mission Point. Long lunches became the norm.
Although the wind and swells were declining, all the marinas in Mooloolaba were fully booked over Easter and unless we added another couple of weeks to the cruise, the tides for crossing the Wide Bay Bar were against us. While some cruisers were able to extend their cruise, others were not. Our depleted fleet of two became three at Dux. Anzac Day was observed at Boat Club in Tipplers Channel and boats returned to home ports.
The 6 Day Cruise 27th May - 1st June 2022, was led by Gordon Leck. We commenced with drinks and nibbles at Paradise Point and then proceeded to Slipping Sands in fine weather and enjoyed drinks and nibbles on the beach. Due to deteriorating weather conditions, the Committee decided to abandon our planned stay at Dux and took the fleet into Cobby Cobby Passage, to ride out the forecast 40 knot westerly winds. After two days in Cobby Cobby, the fleet was able to move on safely, some heading directly home and the rest of the fleet finishing the cruise with lunch at Tipplers Café.
Finally, the End of Season Cruise 24th June - 26th June 2022. This cruise commenced at Santa Barbara on the Coomera River where nine boats anchored, and one boat crew arrived from Sanctuary Cove by Uber. We all met ashore at 5pm for drinks and nibbles. 18 people went to the newly opened Indian restaurant “Kesari” for an evening meal. It was a great success.
The following morning, the fleet headed to Dux. At Dux, the generator had failed, so all crews met ashore at noon for a BBQ lunch. The end of season presentation took place in the afternoon instead of the evening. 26 skite plates were made for boats that had attended three or more events during the season, of which 12 were in attendance to collect.
The SYC cruisers would like to thank BMS
for their ongoing support and sponsorship in funding several random number draws for SYC Members during the year, and we look forward to a continued partnership with them.
The following season commenced on 27th August, with a 5 day cruise up the Logan River, and hopefully followed by a trip to the Tweed River, a Melbourne Cup lunch and a 7 day cruise to Moreton Bay before the Christmas break.
For the latest cruise information for all Power Boat activities please look at the Club web site: 2022_2023-Cruising-Calendar-JULY.pdf (southportyachtclub.com.au) .

The Twilight Winter Series has been an interesting and sometimes challenging season, with continued crew shortages due to Covid disruptions and bad weather, and the introduction of the much sought-after Offshore Twilight series for the larger vessels.
Despite the occasional hurdle however, I continue to be impressed with the number of sailors who continue to show up and comment on how much they look forward to the Thursday sail. From the somewhat competitive racing and friendly banter to the presentation and drinks, we have created a sailing community we can all be proud of.
On that note, I’d like to pass on sincere congratulations to Drew Jones as the new SYC Commodore, and to Glenn Burrell, the Vice Commodore Sailing. While neither need introduction, the appointments are well deserved, and I know they both have our utmost support.
Right, now for the detail… As mentioned above, this winter saw the launch of the inaugural Offshore Twilight Series which was proudly sponsored by EVOLUTION SAILS. While it had a slow start
due to poor weather and challenges with the Southport bar, it has proved to be a great success and we look forward to continuing the series into the spring season. The top three placings for the season were awarded to Hotseat who came third, Black Diamond in second place and Flow Sails Yeah Baby which came in first congratulations to all involved.
The Inshore Series sponsored by DOCUMENT SOLUTIONS continued to experience a strong fleet. Despite varied weather conditions, we welcomed two new boats to the fleet, Amelia and Lady Katherine. Lady Katherine introduces sailing to A.D.F and Ex Vets who are encouraged to join as crew, and as with all our sailors, they will be warmly welcomed. The top placings this season were awarded to Howard on T&T coming in third, Murry on Accomplice who came second and Colin on Cool Change who took out first place. Well done to all participating skippers and invaluable crew.
As the start of the spring series approaches, the sailing office has asked me to congratulate all the boats that have completed their safety audit on time.
Of course, we could not run the Twilight Series without the support of the Board, Sailing Office and Volunteers. A very big thank you to all those involved. These roles can be challenging at times; however, everyone continues to show a fantastic attitude to keep the series alive and fun. A special thank you goes to Brett, the General Manager and his team – they all continue to work hard to keep Thursday nights enjoyable, and you can often see him and other senior staff on the floor as they do their best to keep the Club running smoothly through this incredibly tough time of staff shortages. Well done and thank you.
This report would not be complete without acknowledging and expressing gratitude to all the skippers at the Club. Their ongoing investment in the boats, their crew and the Club ensure that we can all continue to partake in the sport and activities that we love and enjoy.
Finally, we look forward to seeing you all in September for the start of the spring series proudly sponsored by Document Solutions (Inshore) and Evolution sails (Offshore), and please remember, should you have a friend who is interested in a sailing experience, or would like to learn, bring them along on a Thursday afternoon and we will find them a spot.
Happy sailing all!
Peter KarlovicWe have managed to get in seven games this year although it hasn’t always been easy due to the uncertain weather we all have to deal with these days.
We had full fields for Surfers Paradise, The Glades, and Parkwood. Because of rainy conditions we were lucky to get a game in at Arundel. The course wasn’t a hundred percent but it was a very enjoyable day. As it has turned out, this will be our last game there because the liquidators have moved in and the course is now permanently closed.
Emerald Lakes was the chosen venue for May. Everything was looking good but due to intermittent rain Members were given a choice of playing in the rain or not playing at all. Twelve chose to play.
We had planned to play Mullumbimby in June but had to cancel due to the sodden state of the course. Emerald Lakes came to the rescue, we had a full field and everyone enjoyed the day.
Parkwood was unique. We had a good roll up but two players fell ill out on the course. They both left for
home, one taking her husband with her. This has never happened before!! I am happy to report they are both well. Our last game was at Gainsborough Greens. We had a small field. The course is still badly affected by the damp weather and some greens are in very poor shape.
If any Member would like to join our friendly group please advise reception who will pass details on to me.

The Associate’s Committee has put in another year of dedicated and committed fund raising for the Club and we have enjoyed a year with some very outstanding events in the process... I feel very privileged to be President of the Associate’s Committee as I have a team of ladies behind me who are all very passionate and dedicated to what we all do.
Our first event for this report was our Getaway which was hosted by Anne Maree von Zeppelin. This took us all on a magical journey to the Scenic Rim. It was such an amazing day people wanted to have more of them so that is something for us as a group to work on. Our first stop was Albert River Winery at Tamborine. Here they served us morning tea and entertained us with the cattle dogs and the sheep. From there it was onto Overflow Estate 1895 Winery for lunch situated at Wyaralong Dam. Lunch was a gourmet affair prepared by French Chef Ollie. Definitely a place to visit.
We found this a difficult event to sell but the people who attended were delighted. It turned out to be one of our best functions.
Criena Gehre CEO of HOTA entertained us for 30 minutes. She was witty and funny. Personally I could have listened to her for a lot longer.
Criena is a clear champion for HOTAs vision. She has a diverse and eclectic background in the arts management and a particular passion for the role of arts and culture.
Really turned out to be an amazing day.
Southport Yacht Club Goes to the Races was held at the Turf Club on the 16th of July. Our attendance was down a little on last years but everyone enjoyed an amazing day. The luncheon was decadent, and it was nice to be able to serve ourselves this year. The event as always was a great success.
To our loyal sponsors who keep donating fabulous prizes year after year, we say a very big thank you. Your generosity and support really do mean a lot for our fund raising and ensures the quality of our raffles.
Appreciation as always goes to General Manager Brett James and Operations Manager Katie Lister and their very competent management and administrative team who play a valued role
in helping the Committee put together everything from raffle prizes to the finer details of functions and events presented by the Committee. They are always very generous with their time assisting the Committee with its activities.
Lois Rowe President - Associates CommitteeYou might be wondering what pangrattato is...well... it’s what your pasta meals have been missing, Crispy, crunchy breadcrumbs that you sprinkle over your finished pasta dish to add extra flavour and texture. Sometimes referred to as “poor man’s Parmesan”... Trust me, it is yummy!
• 12 green prawns, heads removed, peeled & deveined (cut large prawns in half)
• 1 cup pancetta, finely diced
• 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
• 250g linguini (fresh egg pasta if you can get it but dried packet pasta will also work fine)
• 2/3 cup shallots, finely sliced
• 2 teaspoon garlic, crushed
• 1 long red chilli, finely diced (seeds removed)
• olive oil
• 2 tablespoon parsley, chopped + extra leaves to use for garnish when plating
• 1 lemon, juiced
• Sea salt & cracked pepper
Pangrattato
• 2 slices sourdough or white bread, broken up
• 1 garlic clove, crushed
• 1 teaspoon lemon zest
For the Pangrattato: Preheat oven to 160°C. Place bread on a baking tray and drizzle with olive oil. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden and crisp. Cool slightly, then place toasted bread, garlic and lemon zest in a food processor and pulse until it is a rough crumb, season to taste and set aside.
Cook the linguini in a saucepan of boiling salted water until al dente, about 6-8 minutes, (or follow packet directions) drain well and run under cold water and set aside.
Drizzle a little olive oil in a pan over medium to high heat, add pancetta and sauté until crispy, remove it from pan and set it aside but don’t tip out the fat and oil from your pan because that’s flavour right there. Using the same pan add prawns and cook for 2-3 minutes, remove from pan, and set them aside. Add a splash more oil to the pan and add shallots, garlic, chilli, and cherry tomatoes, cook for 1-2 minutes. Place prawns, pancetta, and linguini back into the pan to heat through, toss pasta to combine. Add lemon juice, parsley and a splash of more olive oil if needed, season to taste, then its ready to serve.
Divide pasta between 2 warm plates, drizzle over olive oil and scatter over Pangrattato, garnish with parsley leaves and serve.
