Offshore racing is the pinnacle of high-octane competition among sailing enthusiasts.
As Mayor, I welcome the 2023 flotilla to our city for five days of action. Expect intense rivalry across the divisions with 50 yachts and crew registered this year, the 12th running of Qoin Sail Paradise.
Sailing is a passion for millions of people across the globe and our city’s facilities are being enhanced to ensure we provide a safe, and inviting, port for crew and the owners.
I know Southport Yacht Club has polished the silverware and stocked the fridges to en sure the camaraderie and high jinks continue around the bar, after a great day’s racing.
I encourage visitors to stay a little longer, party a little harder and soak up the magic of the coast.

MAJOR EVENTS GOLD COAST WELCOME MESSAGE
The Gold Coast with its magnificent coastline and vast ocean back drop is the perfect place to host the Qoin Sail Paradise Regatta.
Now in its 12th year, this popular offshore racing event attracts sailing enthusiasts and spectators from across Australia and New Zealand, and Major Events Gold Coast is delighted to give the event our support once again in 2023.
We’re excited to see the regatta has now expanded to a five-day event, giving participants the opportunity to enjoy not only our stunning coastline as they race, but everything else our city has to offer in between the sailing. For our local economy, this event brings significant benefits and further diversi fies the Gold Coast’s annual portfolio of major events helping increase our out-of-region visitors.
I would like to wish the event organisers, participants, and support crew the best of luck for this year’s Qoin Paradise Sail Regatta.

Along with Qoin Sail Paradise regatta there is a new series of racing organised with SYC, RQYS and QCYC called the Summer of Sail. This will be a series of races to be sailed in the spring and summer. A great step forward for our offshore fleets with more competitive racing available.

SAIL PARADISE AN ENDEARING HISTORY WITH AN EXCITING FUTURE
Many years ago, three enthusiastic and kindred spirited Southport Yacht Club Sailors got together over a few ‘not so quiet’ beers at the bar and created Sail Paradise. Now, over a decade later, the Regatta is the largest of its kind in South-East Queensland and continues to grow in popularity, with skippers and crew travelling from across the country to compete.
When you consider the Gold Coasts’ love affair with the water, the stunning beaches, and the many attractions the city offers, it’s no surprise that family and friends of competitors don’t need much enticing to ‘jump on board’ and join them each January for the on and off water events and activities that Sail Paradise and the Gold Coast delivers.
It’s been a challenging few years, however, the sport of sailing continues to deliver that release and escape from the stresses of life, the sheer physical sensation of being on the ocean and the sense of well-being and freedom the sport delivers - it’s a special kind of magic, understood by all who discover it.
Now in its 14th year, the evolution of Sail Paradise continues, and Southport Yacht Club are passionate about elevating the sport of sailings for the enjoyment and benefit of all, from participation right through to the spectator’s visual delight of seeing yachts racing in all their grandeur offshore, with the stunning Gold Coast’s cityscape as it’s backdrop.
The Qoin Sail Paradise Event Program has been extended in 2023 from 4 to 5 days and now includes a Flexible Lay Day, with excursions planned on the free day, for crews, families, and friends to experience more of the Gold Coast’s stunning destinations and attractions.
Southport Yacht Club also announced this year that Qoin Sail Paradise 2023 will headline a new ‘Sailing Series’, jointly hosted by SYC, QCYC and RQYS - The Summer of Sailing Series Australia (SSSA). The series incorporates 6 premier sailing events over summer 22/23 and has so far enticed many elite yachts and their dedicated skippers and their crew to enter.

I am looking forward to welcoming all competitors in the 2023 Sail Paradise Regatta. I have competed in many of the different divisions and classes that Sail Paradise has on offer over the past 9 years. I enjoy the competitiveness and camaraderie between all of the skippers and crew. Sail Paradise presents a fantastic opportunity to test your boat and skills against visiting competitors from near and far. There will be close racing on the best race track on the East Coast of Australia, sunny Gold Coast... See you there in 2023.
DENIS THOMPSON - RACE DIRECTOR
Australia’s leading professional Yacht Race Manager, Denis Thompson has been confirmed as Race Director for the Qoin Sail Paradise. Denis is one of Australia’s most respected yacht race admins and will coordinate all matters relating to the Regatta’s racing.
Denis is well known for managing the racecourse for major sailing events around Australia and overseas, Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, Festival of Sails Geelong, Hamiliton Island Race Week, Magnetic Island Race Week, Sail Paradise and Sail Port Stephens just to name a few. He has also run numerous state, national and world events. Denis struggles to walk through a yacht club anywhere in Australia without having to stop and talk to someone he knows. Denis, is best known for providing excellent competition for all divisions, racing and cruising.
SIMON TURPIN - REGATTA DIRECTOR
Simon is Southport Yacht Club Sailing Operations Manager with a wealth of sailing knowledge – Being Australian Sailing Accredited and a sailor himself Simon understands the importance of good quality racing and management. This will be Simon’s 9th Sail Paradise Regatta and looks forward to an exciting and safe regatta.
GREG CLARK - MASTER OF CEREMONIES
Queensland born Greg Clark is one of Australia’s top sports commentators with over three decades of experience. ‘Clarkie’ was Fox Sports’ Chief Rugby Commentator and called his 200th test match during Rugby World Cup 2019 in Japan.
Events hosted include: John Eales Medal/Australian Rugby Awards 1984 and 1986 Wallabies Reunions. NSW Waratahs Awards and Chairman’s Club match day functions.
