CHAIR

P.C. KERRY NOYES

The Club has so many projects and changes happening at the moment it’s hard to know where to start!

Hollywell, the long-awaited pontoon has been installed and is being well received by our sailing fraternity. The Clubhouse is bustling, and the dining refurbishments have been enjoyed by many Members, Supporters and guests not only for the usual meals on offer but also a place for training, presentations, functions and special events. It made a world of difference to hosting these in a comfortable space, and we look forward to more coming this year.

The Hardstand Storage facility is starting to take shape and should be up and running mid-year with Members eager to fill this space.

I’m pleased to announce that at the Special General Meeting held recently it was resolved to progress with the Marina Maintenance program. The project is expected to span three years, this is to minimise the impact on our Members during the build. The Club has dedicated a webpage bringing the latest updates, news,

and images as the program progresses. Should you have any questions or require any further information that isn’t accessible on the website information page please contact Mark Riddell, Waterfront Manager or Brett James, General Manager.

Main Beach Clubhouse bar renovations is another big project for the Club, with operations for food and beverage undergoing many day-to-day challenges to keep our Members, Supporters and guests, along with the many functions & events the Club hosts all accommodated with limited service spaces. The Team have worked their magic, and I think you’ll agree that from the patrons’ point of view it’s been a smooth transition, and we thank you for your patience during this time. At the time of writing this we have yet to unveil the beautiful new modern bar, we eagerly await the completion.

Looking forward we are now focused on bringing these new projects to life, minimising the impact for our Members and Supporters.

Our Yachting fraternity are ever growing, with the Power Boat Cruising division

reaching incredible numbers out on their adventures. It’s fantastic to see our Members, both Sail and Power Boat, attending these Cruises as they are open to all, only limited by height to access some locations. I encourage you to attend one if you haven’t before, it’s a great way to meet new friends with common interests. Sailing has another full calendar, with the Clubs premier event, The Yacht Sales Co. Sail Paradise regatta already garnering interest, and the Gold Coast Mackay Yacht Race in its second year.

Appreciation and thanks must go to all our Committee’s, and sub-committees, who work tirelessly behind the scenes assisting Management and the Board in ensuring the Club can run and host as many races, events, and Members activities as we do.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your dedication and support, we wouldn’t have the Club we have today without you.

Dear Members, Supporters, and Friends of Southport Yacht Club,

No sooner has the 2024-2025 season opened and we are drawing to a close already and making plans for 2025-2026 and locking in calendars and budgets. It has been another action-packed year of boating, socialising and events at Southport Yacht Club.

I would personally like to thank the SYC Management, Staff and Volunteers for all their hard work over the past season and ensuring that our Club and events run as smooth and seamlessly as possible. I also would like to show my appreciation of our Associates Committee headed by President, Lois Rowe, who continue to raise much needed funds for our ever-growing Club through raffles and outstanding charity events throughout the year.

As mentioned in my last inSYnC article, Southport Yacht Club was well represented in the 2024 Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. While our thoughts and prayers go out to family, friends and crew mates of the two crew who lost their lives during the race, I am pleased to say that all our SYC Competitors arrived home safe and sound. All our yachts competed valiantly in what turned out to be challenging conditions. The 2024 Rolex Sydney to Hobart yacht Race was a reminder why it is renowned

around the world as one of the most challenging of Yacht Races.

Southport Yacht Club is well represented in the upcoming 77th Gladstone Ports Corporation Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race to start on Good Friday April 18th, 2025. Such is our stature in offshore yachting, SYC has the most competitors entered from any single yacht club. I personally look forward to, once again, racing my own yacht, Black Diamond in this year’s race and hope to better our result of 4th overall from last year’s race. Wish us luck.

Renovations of our main bar at Main Beach are almost complete and the finished job will be an asset for all Members and Supporters to be proud of for many years to come. The covered waterfront outdoor area at Hollywell continues to be a very popular addition to this facility as many Members and Supporters enjoy a meal or a drink while watching the boats go by in a relaxed waterfront environment.

Cyclone Alfred was a testing time for the Club as well as a worrying time for many boat owners. The Club’s management enacted a cyclone plan that resulted in minimal impact on the Club and negligible damage to Member’s boats. Inevitably there was some electrical and storm damage to the Club and our facilities which

is currently part of an insurance claim. Through excellent management there was very little disruption to operations and our annual Dux Birthday went ahead a mere two weeks after the cyclone had passed.

My wife, Karen and I, are looking forward to embarking on the Commodore’s cruise through the Kimberley’s and Indonesia on board Silver Cloud departing July 2nd, 2025. We look forward to creating lasting memories with some of our fellow Members who have taken up the special Member’s only offer created by Club Sponsors, Zeppelin Travel.

Once again, I would like to thank all our Club’s Sponsors for their generous support as many events could not proceed without their contribution. Early indications are that the 2nd Gold Coast City Marine Gold Coast to Mackay Yacht Race will be well supported and promises to be another exciting addition to the Australian Offshore Racing calendar. This year’s race starts on Friday August 1 with many spectator options available if you aren’t competing. Please contact the Club or keep an eye on socials for further information.

Hello Members and Supporters,

GENERAL MANAGER

BRETT JAMES

Currently sitting in my office thinking about how all this will get done. The rebuild of the Bar and Hardstand area, contract negotiations in relation to the Marina rebuild, Cyclone repairs, end of year results, 25/26 budget, Sponsorship and Membership renewal. The Team are all systems go and working hard to achieve great results and experiences for you all.

Hollywell has seen the Pontoon extension completed, so hoping that all sailors now have more room after racing. Hollywell Restaurant continues to increase in customers and provide a service to Members and Supporters. The Sailing Committee are very united and working together as a team and have just finished the sailing calendar for next season. Having all sailing Staff on duty has been hard due to sickness and injury but in saying this we seem to be coping. There have been some amazing Sailing results from our Members and I do apologise if I have missed a few. SYC’s Offshore fleet performed extremely well in this year’s 77th Brisbane to Gladstone race over the Easter weekend, and the Surf to City race early February. At Gladstone, Line Honours

monohull was won by Michael Spies and his crew on Maritimo 52 and in multihull Greg Alder on Top Gun. Commodore Glenn Burrell and his crew aboard Black Diamond earned 1st in IRC and ORCi, At the Hansa Worlds on Sydney’s Pittwater, SYC competed with over 200 competitors from 17 nations to see Neil and Jack taking home 2nd place in the Skud class, whilst Niome and Joe Thomson took out 3rd place. Nate McCarthy won his division for the third consecutive year at the Maroochydore Head of the River. Special congrats to Ross Beedle and Emmerson Wheeler as selected to the 2025 Australian Sailing National Youth Squad in the 29er Class. Incredible work to get to this level of recognition, we wish them fair winds and following seas into their future.

Once again, the Associates Committee have continued to assist youth sailing with the purchase of another 10 Opti’s for use at Oxenford. This will also give the opportunity to current kids in the program to purchase a secondhand Opti at a great price. The Associates Committee are a very important part of the Club, so when you see them around the Club selling raffle tickets make sure you not only purchase a ticket but say thank you.

So many Club events, Members Day, Dux Birthday and the Charity Golf Day were all within 3 weeks and we missed all the bad weather. These events were well supported from Members and Supporters, all enjoying the day.

As mentioned above the Marina refurbishment will start this year and is looking like a 3-year program. This is very exciting time for the Club but also an operational nightmare which the Marina Staff are ready for. I believe at the end of this project this Marina will be the best in Australia just like the Mega Berth. All updates of the project are on the Club website under the Marina tab.

I would like to thank all Members and Supporters for their patience in regard to repairs and maintenance around the Club. With the Bar and Hardstand now completed, the Marina will take hold over the next few years so let’s all buckle in for the ride.

DUX BIRTHDAY BASH 2025!

AN ISLAND CELEBRATION FOR ALL TO REMEMBER

There’s only one day a year when Southport Yacht Club’s hidden gem, Dux Anchorage on South Stradbroke Island, opens its gates to the public – and what a spectacular day it was! On Sunday, 30th March 2025, Dux celebrated its birthday in true island style, and the weather couldn’t have been more perfect.

In the lead-up to the event, there were concerns about grey skies and possible rain, but Mother Nature had other plans – delivering clear skies, calm waters and golden sunshine that made for the ultimate boating weather. From early morning, vessels of every size and shape – from tinnies and tenders to jet skis and cruisers – made their way to the Anchorage, full of excitement and ready for a day of tropical fun.

The highlight of the event had to be the live music from the incredible Soul-Cutz, who truly brought the party vibes. Their infectious energy got everyone dancing, and at one point even pulled the crowd together for a spontaneous conga line – a true testament to the joy and spirit of the day!

The Anchorage buzzed with activity – raffles, promo giveaways, birthday bubbles, cake, and plenty of sunshine. Guests lounged by the waterfront, shared laughter with friends and family, and soaked up the laid-back island atmosphere.

The day felt like the ultimate island escape – no passports or airports required. Just good people, great tunes, refreshing drinks, and a stunning location. Whether you were kicking back with a cold beverage, splashing in the shallows, or dancing on the sand, it was clear everyone was having the time of their lives.

This once-a-year celebration truly showcases the charm and community spirit of the Southport Yacht Club. With so much to see and do, and such a warm welcome for all, it’s no wonder the Dux Birthday Bash has become a must-attend event on the Gold Coast social calendar.

If you missed out this year – fear not! There’s always next March, and we’ll be ready to do it all over again. Until then, cheers to another unforgettable birthday at Dux Anchorage!

AN ENCHANTED EVENING WITH WENDY

LIVE @ SOUTHPORT YACHT CLUB

Live in the Compass Room – A Night to Remember

The Southport Yacht Club was truly alive with magic as the incomparable Wendy Matthews graced the stage for a night of unforgettable music. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Gold Coast, Friday evening saw the Compass Room transformed into an intimate haven of melody and atmosphere, offering Members, Supporters, and guests a truly special Dinner and Show experience. Renowned for its charm and acoustic warmth, the Compass Room has become a favourite venue for live performances, and this evening was no exception. Guests enjoyed a delicious dining experience while the legendary Wendy Matthews serenaded the room with her timeless voice and iconic hits. The candlelit tables and waterfront views provided the perfect setting for an evening of relaxation, laughter, and nostalgia.

Wendy Matthews, the Canadian-born Australian singersongwriter, has long been a cherished name in Australian music. With a career spanning decades, she is known both for her solo work and her contributions to bands such as Models and Absent Friends. Her performance at Southport Yacht Club featured a rich selection of her Top 20 hits from the 1990s, including “Token Angels”, “Let’s Kiss (Like Angels Do)”, “Friday’s Child”, and the hauntingly beautiful “The Day You Went Away”. Her smooth, emotive vocals captivated the audience, evoking memories and creating new ones all at once.

In addition to her remarkable chart success, Wendy has released a string of acclaimed albums such as Émigré, Lily, The Witness Tree, and the unforgettable duet album You’ve Always Got the Blues with Kate Ceberano. TIMELESS

As the evening unfolded, the room was filled with admiration, applause, and a sense of collective joy. Wendy’s heartfelt performance brought the crowd to their feet, and her warm presence on stage created a personal connection that few artists achieve. It was an exquisite reminder of the power of live music and the way it brings people together.

To Wendy Matthews — thank you for sharing your extraordinary talent with us. And to all who attended, thank you for being part of a magical night beneath the stars at Southport Yacht Club. Until next time, may the music linger in your hearts.

V.C. SAIL WAYNE KIRBY

Greetings Members, Supporters and Friends of SYC,

As a Club, we have had a very busy last few months. Cyclone Alfred paid us a visit and while it left an indelible scar on the beaches of the Gold Coast, as a Club, we faired reasonably well. Thank you to all the boat owners and crews who heeded the warnings from the Club and the authorities and ensured their boats were ready for the storm. It could have been a lot worse, and it was great to see that we can work together to meet the challenge. Well done to Mayor Tom Tate and the government for their quick response in particular to organising the immediate seaway dredging as it impacts our Mega Yacht Marina and our offshore program.

Our sailors have also been busy. Our Australia Day weekend Ted Elkes Memorial Regatta was a great success. Perfect conditions and fun competitive sailing. 13 boats competing with notable performances by Garry Holt’s Lets Get it ON and Mark Sanders Destiny.

The Surf to City race start was well hosted by our Club with a well-attended welcome party. We had 4 SYC boats in the offshore fleet with 7 boats competing the inshore leg, including one Multihull. In all 70 vessels competed. Congratulations to David Rose on Wedgetail for winning IRC with Commodore Glenn coming in second. Also, we had great results for 4 Shaw and Olive.

Recently we had 6 crews competing in the Hansa World Championships at Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club on Pittwater NSW. Neil Rowsthorn coming in Second

and Naomi Ohue coming in Second in the Scud division.

Our dinghy fleet are regularly competing at away regattas getting experience in competing in large fleets and representing SYC to the best of their abilities. Well done to the SYC Sailing Academy for training and facilitating our juniors and new sailor programmes to allow them to compete.

Our summer racing season is wrapping up with some tight on water challenges in Offshore, Inshore, Off the Beach Cats and our Dinghy Divisions. Our end of inshore/ offshore season presentation night is on the 27th of June and the theme is Roaring Twenties. I’m looking forward to congratulating all our winners and seeing what creative fashion ideas our sailors can come up with.

The Inshore Division had over 30 boats competing over the season with the JAM series again well attended. Congrats to Brent Geritz for taking out the JAM’s series. Neil Rowsthorn winning the Summer RTC series and the Summer Passage series. Greg Forgan-Smith taking out the Club Championships for the Etchells division. The new jetty extension has been greatly appreciated and has notably reduced congestion when launching a large number of boats. Cyclone Alfred gave it a good nudge with some broken connections, but these have been repaired, and the jetty is being well utilised.

The Spring and Summer Twilight Series have been raced and won. Rick Bilson’s Impulse X winning the Spring Series and David Chadkirk’s Cyclone winning the Summer Series. Before Xmas we had a

change of Twilight Sailing Representatives with Steve Furlong having to relocate, we were lucky to have Jess Greenwood step up to take on the role. Welcome to Jess and well done so far.

The new season calendar is on the website and Sailing Instructions are currently being finished. Queensland has a full offshore calendar this year with a significant event occurring nearly every month. The Easter Brisbane to Gladstone race would have been run by the time you read this. We have 9 boats entered and I wish the all the best. Our Flat Rock race is on May 10 and we will be welcoming the Sydney to Gold Coast fleet here at the end of July. Followed quickly by our 2nd edition of the GCCM Gold Coast to Mackay Race. This race already has 18 entries and bodes well for a fun event with a larger fleet than last year.

Entries are also open for the The Yacht Sales Co. Sail Paradise Regatta in October. This event will also co-host the Queensland Yachting Championships so please get your entries in soon to support this event.

Congratulations to all our Club winners. I’ve mentioned a few winners, the full results will now be available on the Club website.

I am proud to be a part of this great Club, and I am always open to hearing about what we do well, and what we can do better, so please feel free to have a chat.

POWER

VC POWER

V.C. POWER JUSTIN SINNAMON

The Southport Yacht Club Power Boat Committee has been kept busy over the past few months and we have welcomed 16 new power boat registrations to the Yacht Register since the last edition of In SYnC. For those who aren’t aware, many different aspects of our Club are run by Volunteers, on various Committees. The Power Boat Committee is made up of 9 such Volunteers, comprising 4 ‘navigation’ Volunteers, and 5 ‘cruising’ Volunteers. This Committee organises many events throughout the typical boating season, including;

• Navigation events (with social lunch gatherings)

• Cruises (short and long cruises, local and farther afield)

• The Poker Run (a new event, run annually at this stage, proving popular)

• The ANZAC Day raft-up (opposite the cenotaph in Broadwater Parklands)

• A Goodwill Cup – sub committee (an RQYS Navigation event that SYC participates in)

• Lunches, presentations, and powerboat information sessions and evenings

If you are a Gold Member and have an interest in, and own a power boat, along with a genuine desire to help out, please get in touch with me, as we could always use some additional assistance with subcommittee and other volunteering duties.

Navigation Matters

The switch to run Traditional Navigation events as a ‘return course’ (home from Dux) appears to have been a success with numbers of competitors increasing. In the GPS Navigation Division, the top three boats (raw scores) for the season to date are neck and neck for Club Champion – being; Sea Eagle, Ruby Tuesday, and Water Music II. We will see who takes out the Club Championship this season (I am secretly hoping for Ruby Tuesday as I crew on this boat, owned by Peter Brown).

Cruising Matters

The good times continue aboard with our Cruising Division, routinely attracting up to 25 vessels per cruise (some cruisers come and go or join for part of a cruise only), visiting Kooringal (20 boats), Australia Day cruise including a visit to

Dux for some Australia Day games (25 boats), Valentines Day Cruise complete with presents for the girls (17 boats), and the Dunwich Cruise (currently online and selling fast). The planned 10 day Brisbane River Cruise scheduled for March (fully booked with 25 boats) was cancelled, courtesy of Tropical Cyclone Alfred. Detailed reports for our past cruises are available on the SYC Club website.

Safety Update

Hopefully, by now boaties will be aware of the recent safety update by Maritime Safety Qld, with respect to life jacket rules on smaller boats. The update includes that if a lifejacket is required to be carried, it must be worn when boating alone (or accompanied only by children under 12) in an open boat of less than 4.8m while underway or, between sunset and sunrise while underway in an open boat of less than 4.8m. Check the Maritime Safety Queensland website and Information Bulletins for more information.

Bye for now and I hope to see more of you out on the water.

ALL HANDS ON DECK: SYC POKER RUN 2025

SETS COURSE FOR ANOTHER UNFORGETTABLE ADVENTURE

The engines were revving, the spirits were high, and the Gold Coast Broadwater was alive with colour, creativity and camaraderie as the Southport Yacht Club Poker Run 2025 – All Hands on Deck made a triumphant return. With 30 enthusiastic teams spread across 21 vessels, over 100 Members, Supporters and their crew gathered for a day of fun, adventure, and a splash of friendly competition on the water.

Despite the less-than-ideal weather conditions, the energy of the event never faltered. A massive shout-out goes to our incredible team of Volunteers who braved the elements to ensure everything ran like clockwork – your dedication and support didn’t go unnoticed and played a huge part in making the day such a success.

The Poker Run route featured five designated card draw locations dotted across the stunning Gold Coast waterways: SYC Dux Anchorage, Pontoon inside Couran Point, SYC Hollywell Squadron private pontoon, Marine Stadium, and finally, SYC Main Beach Clubhouse. Participants navigated the course at their own pace, collecting a playing card at each stop to build their best five-card poker hand by the time they returned to shore.

From the moment the boats left the Marina, it was clear this wasn’t just any ordinary boating day out. The creativity on display was nothing short of spectacular. Teams arrived decked out in all manner of imaginative costumes—from cowboys and cartoon characters to The Little Mermaid icons. It was a true celebration of community spirit, humour and flair, with a buzz of excitement in the air that followed every vessel across the course.

As boats began returning to SYC Main Beach in the late afternoon, the festivities moved into full swing with the Poker Run 2025 Presentations. A big round of applause goes to Water Music II, who claimed victory with a winning hand of a Full House. But it wasn’t just about the cards—there were plenty of smiles, laughs, and fantastic memories made across the fleet, with strong hands and stronger friendships on show all round.

WINNERS

We extend our heartfelt thanks once again to our generous event Sponsor, Short Marine, for supporting this brilliant day. Your continued partnership makes events like this possible and keeps the spirit of adventure alive at Southport Yacht Club.

To The Power Boat Division of SYC, all our teams, Members and Supporters, Volunteers and Staff... thank you. Your energy, enthusiasm, and involvement are what make Poker Run one of the highlights of the SYC calendar. Whether you came for the cards, the costumes, or the cruising, we hope you left with memories that will last well beyond the final hand.

Until next time boaties, anchors away and see you on the water for Poker Run - All Hands on Deck 2026!

The Future of ‘S&H

Cookie at S&H Spars has been our go to rigger for almost 40 years! Rumours of his imminent retirement with no one to hand the swaging tools to, has filled our sailing community with shock, panic and sadness! But fear not! The future of S&H Spars is safe and securely fastened! Introducing the new generation of S&H spars: Adam Lahey! Today was his first day on the tools, rubbing shoulders with Cookie again like old times; Cookie is staying on for 6 months to pass on all his knowledge, skills, (and hopefully hiding places), to Adam, and all things are right with the world again. Phew.

Some of us already know Adam. He is the son of Peter (Pedro) & Veronica Lahey, brother to Sophie Lahey, all avid lifetime sailors at Southport Yacht Club. Pedro was on the SYC Board of directors for many years. Adam has spent his life on the water, from sailing sabots at Hollywell sailing squadron to spending every spare minute on his family’s 36ft Grand Banks, Privilege 49, Blazer 23 and his grandfathers 82ft Expedition style Motor Yacht.

During his teens, Adam worked for Cookie at S&H spars. Adam also becomes the first Junior Commodore of SYC, a title he held for two terms. He campaigned hard in the 29er and 49ers with the Queensland Academy of Sport - High Performance Sailing Programme, ranking top of Australian Youth Sailors with Olympic aspirations. He then headed off to work on superyachts in his early 20’s.

Adam returned home, married, and has been managing his family’s business ever since. And now he returns to his passion: Sailing and Rigging.

S&H Spars is close to the Lachey’s heart. Peter (Pedro), Adam’s dad, worked for Peter Saxby & Wayne Horne, (the “S” and the “H” in S&H), back in the beginning when it was at Runaway Bay Marina!

They started the mast fabrication business back in 1979. They then moved to Brisbane Road in about 1983, soon after which Wayne Horne left to run charter catamarans in the Whitsundays. S&H Spars then moved to its current home, in 1987, where they were one of the first tenants at 211 Brisbane Road. Peter Saxby then left to work for the Americas Cup in ‘87 in WA, (and then followed his successful career to America where he is still today). Cookie bought it soon after and has been running it ever since!

And let’s not forget Peter Charlton, cookies partner in the business for over 10 years, and more recently Matt who has been with Cookie for another 10 years and is still travelling around Australia as we speak.

But now, after fracturing his back on the job over 4 years ago,

SPARS’... Is Secure

Cookie is deservedly needing to hang up his bosuns chair and splicing tools and retire for good. Adam is in the enviable position of still having Cookies support, skills and knowledge as well as those of his fathers, Wayne, Split-Pin, Lance Widdy, Jim Lomax, just to mention a few of the old boys that used to be S & H Spars, who are all still around today and proud as punch at the success of this great business and to see it continue.

S & H Spars are back to work today after the Christmas Holiday break, and both Adam and Cookie are back on the tools with jobs booked in and going out. If you need your rigging checked, your furler renewed, a rope spliced, a new mast built or a flagpole erected, or just to say g’day and congrats to Adam and Cookie, call the boys on 55375377.

LEGEND!

YACHTING MANAGER MATTHEW DICKINSON

Winter Sailing at SYC: Momentum, Innovation & Looking Ahead

As we get closer to Winter and wait for the dreaded Winter Westerly breeze across the Broadwater, you’d be forgiven for thinking the sailing season is slowing down. At SYC, nothing could be further from the truth.

While some of our yachts migrate north for regattas or enter a period of maintenance, our Club remains a hive of activity. With the new sailing calendar recently released we have many exciting Club series and special events this year. Including two Etchell events over the next couple of months.

The success of the SYC membership across all divisions representing the Club at away regattas has been significant. From Brisbane to Gladstone, OTB State and National titles in various classes to Regional Club events. There have been too many podium positions to mention them all, just look at the Brisbane Gladstone Yacht Race results for example you could be forgiven for thinking it was an SYC event with so many SYC Yachts in the results.

Racing Momentum

Winter at SYC offers some great and some challenging conditions for keen racers— clear skies, shifty breeze, and tight competition. Our various Winter Series continues to be a drawcard, especially for those who value both sailing and socialising. We’re seeing solid numbers across Club racing, and a consistent lift in new entrants stepping up from cruising boats or training fleets.

Offshore Focus – Growing Aspirations

There’s a noticeable buzz building around offshore sailing—both within SYC and across the broader Australian sailing scene. The demand for coastal racing is growing, and we’re working to ensure SYC stays at the forefront of this resurgence. We’ve already had strong expressions of interest from Members and Supporters for future offshore campaigns, and we’re encouraging more boats and crews to set their sights on events like the GCCM Gold Coast Mackay, Flat Rock, Cook Island, Julian Rocks, Sydney Gold Coast, The Yacht Sales Co. Sail Paradise, Brisbane Gladstone, Brisbane to Keppel, Airlie Beach Race Week, Hamilton Island Race Week, and Sydney Hobart just to mention a few.

If you’re curious about offshore sailing but unsure where to start, speak to the Yachting Office—we’re happy to connect skippers and crew, offer guidance on safety compliance, or discuss whatever is on your mind.

Youth Training – Growing Fleets, Increasing Performance

At SYC, we’re exploring ways to support this growth, ensuring we have the facilities, coaching, and safety systems in place to foster the next wave of elite sailors. We’ve also started mapping out a clearer pathway from junior sailing to highperformance fleets, including options to getting into boats, getting to regattas and connecting Members and Supporters to support each other.

Oxenford Watersports Centre has been a significant project since its inception and continues to be worked on daily with constant improvement of all aspects of the Academy at both Oxenford and Hollywell. We are satisfied with the Cadet Membership Growth and scale

of the Academy particularly at the Learn to Sail level, SYC is the largest Discover Sailing Centre in Australia by a substantial margin. Our focus now shifts from perfecting the scale and marketing to improving the quality, performance and satisfaction of our new and existing Cadet Members. A large part of this comes from engaging with the relevant stakeholders, Members, Supporters, Coaches, Cadets, Committees, Parents and external stakeholders. Listening to our stakeholders and being structured and disciplined in our decision making will lead to the creation of a sustainable and longterm focused Academy. Focus is ensuring consistency and moving away from boom and bust which is very common in Yacht Club youth programs. There are many elements to manage from performance, inclusion, safety, responsible financial management and culture. The support of the SYC Associates Committee cannot be understated, put simply the capability for the Club to deliver the Academy in its current format would not be possible without the Associates.

A Club Evolving With Its Members

As your Yachting Manager, I’m proud of the evolution we’re seeing—not just in sailing formats, but in Member engagement. More skippers are mentoring younger crew. More families are joining the Club. More of you are stepping up to help with race management, training, and Club events. We always need Volunteers with your expertise so please reach out if you have the time to give back to your Club.

Our Club succeeds because of the people behind the boats. Whether you’re a seasoned racer, a new sailor, or someone who just enjoys the view from the various facilities, winter at SYC is a season of connection and quiet momentum.

See you on the water—or back at the bar, sharing stories of it.

SELAH LEIGHTON

VOLUNTEERS KEEPING OUR CLUB MOVING FORWARD

Southport Yacht Club’s events calendar has been bursting with activity, and at the heart of it all are our incredible Volunteers. From November 2024 to April 2025, they contributed over 1,430 hours of their time, skills, and energy — helping to deliver another season of seamless, safe, and successful sailing.

This period saw four key sailing events, each made possible thanks to the efforts of our Volunteer Team:

• Ted Elkes Memorial Regatta

• Cat Weekend

• Two-Handed Race

• Cock of the Broadwater

From setting marks and managing safety boats to coordinating race operations and assisting shoreside, every detail ran smoothly because of the people behind the scenes — our Volunteers.

We also celebrated a major milestone this season: the retirement of Noel Gatland, a longstanding Race Officer and Club Member since 1997. Noel has played a pivotal role in our Thursday Twilight racing for decades, and we extend our deepest thanks for his dedication, calm leadership, and unwavering service.

Looking ahead, it’s been exciting to welcome new Volunteers through our partnership with Volunteering Queensland’s FreddyMatch. Their enthusiasm is already making a positive impact across our Club’s operations — and it’s just the beginning.

To support everyone involved, Southport Yacht Club continues to offer volunteer training in Race Management, Safety Boat Operation, Powerboat Handling, and First Aid, along with online learning through Australian Sailing.

Don’t forget — when you log your hours through the Volunteer Firefly App, you can access discounts on groceries, fuel, and entertainment as a small thank you for your time and support.

As we wrap up the past season, the Academy continues to thrive as Australia’s largest Learn to Sail facility. With recordbreaking participation, new programs, and exciting developments within our team, this has been one of our most memorable and rewarding seasons yet.

Term 1 welcomed over 90 kids and teens into our Learn to Sail courses, setting a new record for youth engagement. It’s been fantastic to see so many young sailors taking to the water with enthusiasm and growing confidence. Our Homeschool Sailing program also launched successfully, with 65 sailors joining us for a trial session and 30 now regularly attending our Wednesday classes. This flexible initiative has opened the door for more families to engage with sailing in a welcoming, supportive environment. At Hollywell, our OutThere Fleet program continued to grow, helping teens build strong foundations in sailing, teamwork, and water safety while having fun and staying active every weekend.

One of the highlights of the season was our annual Summer on the Lake event, held on Saturday 18 January 2025. With over 640 participants joining us at Oxenford Watersports Centre for a day of

SAILING ACADEMY

CHALLENGE WELLS

free sailing and stand-up paddleboarding sessions, the event was a huge success. Families and individuals of all ages enjoyed the perfect weather, calm waters, and a festive, welcoming atmosphere. Whether learning to sail for the first time, racing across the lake, or just enjoying the view, everyone had the chance to experience the joy of life on the water. A heartfelt thank you goes out to all who made the day possible—from our incredible Volunteers to our supportive community.

Our SYC Academy squad sailors continue to thrive, travelling across the coast to represent the Club with pride. Recently, three of our sailors competed at Maroochy, where they faced a challenging course with shifting sandbanks and strong tides. One sailor achieved a remarkable threepeat victory, while another earned a podium finish in their fleet. Although one sailor had to retire from the race, all showed great resilience and skill. Meanwhile, another sailor represented SYC at the NSW O’pen Skiff Championships in Newcastle, finishing 4th overall in the Silver Fleet and securing 1st place in the U17 category. We wish them the best of luck as they head into their next competitions!

We’re also incredibly proud of two of our

Academy Instructors, Emerson Wheeler and Ross Beedle, who were recently selected for the 2025 Australian Sailing Youth Squad in the 29er class. After a standout season in this two-person high-performance skiff, Emerson and Ross are the only Queensland team to earn a place in the national squad. Their selection means they’ll be supported by Olympic-class coaches and will head to Melbourne in April for a national training camp, preparing them to compete at world championship level. It’s a fantastic achievement and a true reflection of their skill, dedication, and leadership—both on and off the water.

As we wrap up this season, we do so with pride and gratitude for everything our sailors, coaches, families, and supporters have contributed. We love to see the community and the passion for sailing grow. We can’t wait to welcome you back for another season filled with learning, connection, and great times on the lake.

See you on the water!

OPENING ACT .

THURSDAY TWILIGHT

JESS GREENWOOD

As we come to the end of our 2024/25 Sailing Season and the Thursdays get shorter and the evenings start cooling down, it’s a great opportunity to look back on a fantastic year of sailing.

Firstly to Steve Furlong and Peter Karlovic, the past 2 Thursday Twilight Reps, thank you for your support of me in stepping into this role. Pete who taught me to sail, inspiring my love for sailing and Steve for the guidance into the role. I’d also like to take the opportunity to thank Glenn Burrell our SYC Commodore, Wayne Kirby, our SYC Vice Commodore of Sail and Offshore Rep Barry Berg for guiding me through this new role within the Club and giving me the opportunity to make the role my own!

For those who don’t know me, I started working at SYC in September 2019 and after some encouragement from the Thursday sailors, I went out for my first Twilight race in November 2019. Since then I have sailed almost every Thursday Twilight race at the Club and those sailing memories have been some of the best I have had in the last 5 and a half years. Monday to Friday you’ll find me on the Reception desk at the Club, and on the weekends and during my holidays, out on the water in Club racing as well as in various levels of offshore racing and regattas.

We’ve had a healthy year of competition between our Club yachts and it’s been wonderful to see so many regular and also new faces and yachts in the Thursday Twilight division. In our Spring series for Division 1, Rick Billson and his crew on “ImpulseX” claimed the overall chocolates, holding on to the win by 1 point in front of Tony Ross and Jason Chipp’s “Schock Therapy” with Barry Berg’s “Makani” rounding out the podium. In Division 2, “Raye” who sails 2 up with Skipper Alan Scott on the tiller, took out the win with a healthy margin over Philip Bell’s yacht “She” in second place for the series. Phil and his crew whom have sailed many nautical miles together in Club racing and Hobart races alike, just beating Colin Metcher’s “Cool Change” by 1 point. Colin has been a familiar face in our Club racing for many years and his passion for sailing in our Club is seen throughout the whole Thursday Twilight Division, Colin often happy to offer his experience or a chat to any sailor he passes.

Our recently concluded Summer Series was an interesting one, with Cyclone Alfred forcing a few abandoned races. While the skippers and sailors would have preferred to be on the water, the safety of all our crews and boats was paramount. I would like to thank all those that helped out with securing yachts and lending a hand to others, so all yachts remained safe. It is truly a blessing to be part of a Club where the competition is great, but the camaraderie and mate ship is greater, and everyone works together to keep our sport going strong.

The Summer Series was a special one for me, my first as the Twilight Rep and racing was hotly contested between many boats with some great racing around the track. In our Document Solutions Division 1 crew, after dominating the podium throughout the series, David “Chadders” Chadkirk and his crew on “Cyclone” took out the overall win, with a 5-point lead over Rick Billson’s “ImpulseX”. Rick is a true asset to our Thursday Twilight Division, often giving a new crew Member each week the opportunity to take the helm. Rounding out our top three

was our SYC Commodore, Glenn Burrell and his crew (yours truly included) on “Black Diamond”, narrowly beating Peter Cook’s GCCM Arctic Blonde on a countback. Our Evolution Sails Division 2 results for the Summer Series saw Steven Brough’s “Blue Eagle” taking out the top spot. Steve having sailed with the Club for a few years now was well deserved the win after also dominating on the podium this series. Our second and third place getters ended up on the same points after 12 races with a placings countback giving Mark Sander’s yacht “Destiny” a second overall. Mark is always happy to take on new crew members when one comes looking to get into sailing in our Club, fostering growth for our crew pool in the Division and the wider Club sailing community. Colin Metcher’s “Cool Change” took out third place with some new crew of his own whom have enthusiastically embraced Thursday Twilight racing with Colin and his son Simon.

Our Club has many facets to it, many of those aiming to encourage yachting and sailors making progress within the Club. A new initiative put forth by Challenge Wells, the Head of Academy at the Oxenford Clubhouse has seen dozens of our Adult Learn to Sail graduates start sailing in our Thursday Twilight racing. Along with a plethora of “Sail Passes” this last year, we have seen huge growth in our crew pool with many new faces now regulars on a Thursday and a Sunday for Offshore racing. As a Divisional Rep, I am so proud to see the progress of many of these sailors from their first visit to the Club, as nervous and excited as I was when I first started sailing to watching them returning week after week, some of whom are now getting involved in higher level offshore racing.

As a Club, our Sponsors are what keeps us going and I’d like to thank Caedric, Joel and the team at Evolution Sails for sponsoring our Division 2 yachts. Joel can often be spotted out on some of our yachts with their sleek new Evolution Jibs and Mainsails, keeping our yachts powered up! Thanks also goes to Colin Wheeler and his team at Document Solutions for supporting our Division 1 racing for the past few years. As a local business of over 20 years on the Gold Coast, Colin and the team are a wonderful support to both our Twilight Division as well as the Club’s printing needs.

I would like to put out a special mention to our Club Volunteers, no matter the weather, starting and finishing our races each week with a wave and a smile, we couldn’t do it without you! A huge thanks also goes to Matt Dickinson, Karen Holdway, Steven Murphy, Selah Leighton and the team in the SYC Sailing Office. While sailing on water seems like a dream every Thursday, there’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes to get us out there each week and our Sailing Office is there week after week to keep us on the water enjoying our wonderful sport. Lastly, thanks to the SYC Board, Management and SYC Staff, personally calling them all friends, it’s everyone coming together in various ways that make a Thursday sail, always a sail to remember.

See you out on the water and fair winds and smooth sailing for the new Sailing Season! What will the 2025/26 season bring us?

SYC GOLF PRESIDENT

PAUL VALLE

This year, the SYC Golf Group has experienced a very wet year. We had our first game in February which was successful at Palm Meadows with one of our newest Members Paul Martell being the winner.

Our March game was washed out due to Cyclone Alfred which was disappointing. We did play at Surfers Paradise in April amongst the showers and we had a great turn up of 26 players. We had a runaway winner as Danny Mahomed won by 9 points (Handicap is coming down dramatically).

We are looking forward to playing a championship course at Royal Pines in May so let us hope for fine weather and a good roll up of players.

In the coming months we have a variety of courses around the Gold Coast including Logan and 2 in NSW.

If any SYC Members are interested, please contact me with an email address and handicap if they have one. paul.valle44@gmail.com for more information

Good golfing!

Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard (GCCM) is unlike any other new build, refit and repair facility in the region. It is the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere and indeed, one of the largest in the world, constantly innovating, developing and expanding. The magnitude of the facility is matched by its service standards which are exemplified in its many industry accolades. In fact, it is the most awarded shipyard in the Asia Pacific region.

Adding to its appeal, GCCM is on the Gold Coast, located in the middle of Australia’s east coast. As a leading tourism destination, the city is serviced by an international and domestic airport which welcomes private jets. Furthermore, GCCM is within easy reach of the Great Barrier Reef, Sydney, New Zealand and the South Pacific.

There are many tangible and intangible features about GCCM and its world class team. They are outlined here however, the most important element is our inherent understanding of yacht Owner’s needs and drive to deliver the very best. Setting the standards rather than following them. We live our mantra: Service Paradise.

LOIS ROWE

A Fabulous Year of Fun with the Southport Yacht Club Associates

The Southport Yacht Club Associates have delivered another exciting year of community, celebration, and style, hosting a series of unforgettable events that brought Members, Supporterss and Non-Members together in true SYC spirit.

Festivities kicked off at the Hollywell Open Day on 22nd September 2024, where the ever-popular Mega Raffle was launched to much anticipation. From there, the fun rolled straight into a frightfully good Halloween Spooky Disco on 31st October, which saw ghouls and goblins dancing the night away.

The glamour stakes were raised on 5th November for the Melbourne Cup Day, with the talented Alex Fietz enchanting guests on the grand piano, adding a touch of elegance to the day’s racing thrills.

The holiday season began in style with the Associates Christmas Party on 13th December, followed by the magical Carols on the Broadwater the next evening. The night was made even more special when the Mega Raffle was drawn—and, happily, the winners were present to share the moment.

In 2025, the Club strutted into the new year with flair at the “Walk on the Wild Side” Fashion Show on 21st March, a fabulous success by all accounts. This was closely followed by Members Day on 22nd March, a fantastic celebration of club camaraderie.

Closing out the season, the much-loved Dux Birthday Party on 30th March wrapped up a vibrant series of events that truly captured the heart of the SYC Associates community. Here’s to another great year ahead!
