As always, our Club has been a bustling centre of activity, both on water and on land. It is truly gratifying to witness our endeavours come to fruition, seeing that the dedicated efforts, meticulous planning, and substantial time invested by our Team have culminated in successful events, functions, races, and other activities that attract strong participation from our Members, Supporters, and Guests.
In the realm of sailing, our team has introduced an exciting new event—the Gold Coast to Mackay Yacht Race. This event kicked off for the first time on August 1st. Vice Commodore Sail, Glenn Burrell, has been instrumental in conceptualizing and realizing this venture. His efforts have not only included organizing the race but also securing crucial sponsorship deals, such as the naming rights with Gold Coast City Marina. We are now accepting entries and are eager to see a large turnout from SYC vessels.
Sail Paradise, our Club’s flagship yacht race, has gained a new principal sponsor—
Yacht Co. Sales, which has committed to supporting the regatta for the next three years. We encourage everyone to extend their gratitude and support to our generous sponsors who play a vital role in our Club’s activities.
The Power Boat division has also experienced significant activity and growth. The Committee deserves accolades for not only introducing new events but also enhancing existing ones in our calendar. Our annual Poker Run “All Hands on Deck” event has nearly doubled in participation over the past year, making it a resounding success by all measures.
Turning to developments at the Club, our Main Beach site has seen considerable progress. The Hardstand amenities are now complete, and we are about to commence upgrading the main amenities, with completion expected in the next six months.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of our Associates Committee—an incredible
Chair Kerry Noyes
milestone. This Committee has tirelessly organized weekly raffles, mega-draw raffles, events, and getaways, all aimed at fundraising for the Club, particularly to support our Youth Sailors. We are planning a gala ball to express our gratitude and celebrate their invaluable contributions to the Club.
We must also acknowledge the departure of Simon Turpin, our Sailing Operations Manager of over 12 years. His dedication has significantly elevated the profile and professionalism of sailing at Southport Yacht Club Inc., earning its recognition as one of the top clubs in Queensland and across Australia. Simon’s legacy will undoubtedly endure, and we are confident in the capable team he leaves behind to continue advancing our Club’s reputation and success.

Commodore Drew Jones
Dear Members, Supporters, and Friends of Southport Yacht Club,
As my tenure draws to a close as Commodore of Southport Yacht Club, I reflect with immense satisfaction on the journey we’ve undertaken together. It has been a period marked by joy, challenges, and significant achievements, all made possible by the unwavering dedication of our staff and the invaluable support of our Members.
I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation to our General Manager, Brett James, Katie Lister, and the entire team across our various locations - Main Beach, Oxenford, Hollywell, and Dux Anchorage. Your hard work, professionalism, and passion for the Club have been instrumental in its success.
While we celebrate our accomplishments, we must also bid farewell to one of our own, Simon Turpin, whose contributions to our sailing team over the years have been exemplary. We wish him fair winds and following seas in his future endeavours.
Our Committees have demonstrated remarkable commitment and innovation, elevating our events to new heights for the enjoyment of all Members and
Supporters. I commend their dedication and collaborative spirit.
I cannot overstate the invaluable role played by our Volunteers, whose selfless efforts breathe life into the numerous events hosted by our Club year-round. Without their tireless dedication, these gatherings simply wouldn’t be possible.
A special acknowledgment is also due to our Associates, whose fundraising efforts continue to support youth sailing initiatives and other vital projects within our Club. The recent addition of new catamarans at Oxenford stands as a testament to their generosity and commitment. I urge everyone to show their support by participating in their activities and purchasing raffle tickets.
Our Club venues stand as beacons of excellence, drawing increased attendance and contributing to our financial success, which is currently trending above budget for the fiscal year. I encourage each of you to explore these magnificent spaces and experience firsthand the warmth of our community.
In addition to our existing events, I am thrilled to announce that Southport Yacht
Club will host the inaugural Gold Coast Mackay Yacht Race on August 1st, 2024. This exciting addition to our calendar promises to further showcase our Club’s spirit of adventure and camaraderie.
As I bid farewell, I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to my dearest Lesley from the bottom of my heart. Her unwavering support, encouragement, and understanding have been the foundation upon which I have been able to serve our Club with passion and dedication over the years. Her presence has been a source of strength and inspiration through my journey as Commodore.
I extend my sincerest wishes for the continued success and prosperity of our Club under the leadership of future Commodores. It has been an honour and privilege to serve alongside you all.
Fair winds and smooth sailing.

ANZAC DAY SERVICES & FLOTILLA
The Southport Yacht Club once again participated in the ANZAC Day Ceremonies held at Anzac Park on the Southport Broadwater, continuing its tradition of honouring and remembering Australian and New Zealand veterans. The solemn event commenced with the ANZAC Day march, culminating at Anzac Park, where our proud Member Craig Thomas, a retired serviceman and long-time ceremony organiser, played a key role on and off stage.
During the ceremonies, Southport Yacht Club was represented by Commodore Drew Jones, Vice Commodore Sail Glenn Burrell, and Vice Commodore Power Brad Waters, who laid the Club’s ANZAC wreath with reverence and respect. The occasion was marked by poignant speeches, songs, and poems, including a moving contribution by Craig Thomas.
A standout feature of the day was the Southport Yacht Club Flotilla, masterfully organised by Vice Commodore Brad Waters and Member Roger Ezzy, which assembled on the Broadwater behind the stage. Against the backdrop of haunting sounds symbolising gunfire, the flotilla illuminated the waters with a spectacular display of flares, adding a thoughtful touch to both the Dawn Service and the subsequent Community Service.
The culmination of the ceremony saw representatives from local clubs, schools, and associations laying wreaths at the Anzac Cenotaph, followed by the soul-stirring sound of the bugle and the harmonious renditions of the Australian and New Zealand anthems, evoking a solemn silence among the assembled crowd. After the service concluded, attendees crossed the road to the local Southport Bowls Club for a ‘Gunfire Breakfast’, fostering camaraderie and reflection in a community setting.
The ANZAC Day event at Anzac Park proved to be a moving and wellorganised tribute, providing an opportunity for everyone to gather and pay their respects. Southport Yacht Club’s active involvement and contributions further underscored its commitment to honouring Australian and New Zealand servicemen, women and service animals to uphold the spirit of ANZAC Day.
General Manager Brett James
Hello Members/Supporters,
The phrase “Something for Everyone” comes to mind when thinking about the Club. As I start writing this I’m thinking about “The Poker Run” event tomorrow which has doubled in size from last year. The last few weeks we have seen the Charity Golf Day, 400 people for Dux Birthday, 600 people for Members Day, Faulty Towers and Beatles dinner and show’s coming up and let’s not forget about all the Sailing and Power Events that we see every week. There is something for everyone and that is why this is a great Club to belong to as Members or Supporter.
Sailing is full steam ahead with some great news for the Clubs major events. “Gold Coast to Mackay Yacht Race” is gathering traction with over 20 entrants along with a Major Sponsor signing which is the world-renowned boat yard “Gold Coast City Marina”. To have this inaugural race partnered with Gold Coast City Marina does place this event on the Australian map. Not to be outdone the Clubs “Sail Paradise” has also seen a new major sponsor, “The Yacht Sales Co.” has signed for the next 3 years. This partnership will see several opportunities for both Yacht Sales Co. and SYC to develop in more places around all the facilities. Please support both Gold Coast City Marina and The Yacht Sales Co. as they are supporting your Club.
As mentioned above, the Poker Run event this weekend is organised by the Power Boat Division along with the new jet ski event, both were new initiatives, both saw great numbers and were enjoyed by all. The Navigation and Cruising events have been strong even with some overflowing to a wait list! If you have a watercraft and want to get involved it’s a great way to enjoy the waterways with other Members.
If you have been looking at the Marina you would have noticed that there are not many spaces available, plus have some very large vessels on the Mega Yacht berth. We currently have a long waitlist for a berth, and with ever changing boat circumstances the Marina team are always busy. The Mega Yacht berth is starting to gather momentum with some internationally known vessels mooring over the last few months. I know the word is getting out around the world and I believe we will see some special boats over the next 6 months so keep an eye out, even knowing that you will not be able to miss them.
In relation to works around the Club the new outdoor area at Hollywell has started and will make a huge difference when enjoying a meal, drink or after a sailing event. The Hardstand toilets at Main Beach have been completed and the temporary Marina toilets will start very soon. The Main Beach bar has had the plans approved
and we are working through costs at the moment. The Board are always investing into the Club and as the General Manager it’s a great relief to have this support.
As you’re all aware the Associates Committee play an important role at SYC and are a very special group of Members. From weekly raffles to major events the Associates Committee are always working on ways to raise funds to help support this Club. This year will see the 50th Anniversary that the Associates Committee have been raising funds and the Club will be holding a special event for all involved. When you see these Members around the Club make sure to say thank you because you are probably using something in the Club that the Associates Committee have purchased.
I must thank the SYC Team and Volunteers it’s been a very busy time over Christmas, and they have continued to turn up and work hard along with the Members and Supporters who continually turn up to events, are positive and enjoy what the Club has to offer.
Brett James General Manager
As the curtain falls on another exhilarating season of sailing, it’s time to look back with pride at the remarkable achievements of Southport Yacht Club (SYC) sailors and management. From thrilling races to prestigious sponsorships, SYC has left an indelible mark on the yachting landscape. While the list of accomplishments is extensive, here are some standout moments from the season:
Gold Coast City Marina clinched the naming rights for the inaugural Gold Coast to Mackay Yacht Race, underscoring the Club’s growing prominence in the sailing community in Queensland and beyond. With 100 days remaining until the GCMYR August 1st start date, anticipation is high as 19 boats have already entered the race, surpassing our initial target and prompting a revised goal of 40 entries.
SYC made a strong showing at the 2024 Surf to City Yacht Race, with 13 boats competing across all divisions, demonstrating the Club’s depth of talent and competitive spirit.
In the 76th Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race, SYC boats, including Black Diamond skippered by our Vice Commodore Sailing, myself, and 38 owned and skippered by Greg Tobin, achieved podium results in various divisions, showcasing the Club’s prowess on the water.
The Yacht Sales Co’s commitment to a three-year sponsorship as naming rights sponsor of Sail Paradise highlights the Club’s appeal to industry leaders and underscores its status as a premier yachting destination.
Building on the success of hosting the QLD Yachting Championships in 2023, SYC has been awarded the honour once again for 2024, 2025, and the National Yachting Championships in 2026 by Australian Sailing. Along with the generous support of The Yacht Sales Co, Experience Gold Coast has renewed their funding as recognition of our regatta as a major tourism event. The landscape and high rises that is the Gold Coast, offers spectators various viewing options from boats or beachside along the Glitter Strip.
SYC’s fleet continues to expand, attracting exciting racing yachts to its waters. Notable additions include Ryujin, Mayfair, and Ocean Crusaders J-Bird, owned by passionate sailors who have made Southport their home.
In a thrilling finale to the season, Garry Holt’s Let’s Get It On claimed 1st place in the Australian IRC Yacht Racing Championships Division 3, adding another feather to SYC’s cap and cementing its reputation as a hub of sailing excellence.
With the tireless support of The Associates
VC Sail Glenn Burrell
as well as staff and management, our junior sailors continue to grow and hone their skills on the water. SYC’s sailing future is in good hands with many juniors continuing to learn and improve both in and off the water.
I would like to thank the many Volunteers who give freely of their time to help make our Club a success. A special appreciation of the many hours put in by the various Committees and Division Representatives is also worth a special mention.
The Sailing Office has been headed by Simon Turpin, Sailing Operations Manager, for the past 10 years or so and has seen many major milestones during his tenure. I would like to personally thank Simon for helping me work through the role of VC Sail for the past couple of years. The sailing fleet and Members has been left in good stead thanks to Simon’s efforts while at the helm. I wish him and his family well in the future and look forward to crossing paths again in the not-too-distant future.
As we bid farewell to another successful season, SYC looks ahead with optimism, eager to continue its legacy of sailing prowess and community spirit in the seasons to come.

Hansa Class Asia Pacific Championships 2024
The International Hansa Class Association will be holding their 2024 Asia Pacific Championships on the Gold Coast, Australia, hosted by the Southport Yacht Club from Sunday 20th October to Friday 25th October 2024.
Officially launched at Southport Yacht Club’s Hollywell Sailing Squadron on Thursday April 18, World President of the International Hansa Class Association (IHCA) Vera Voorbach from the Netherlands said “Thank you for joining us as we set sail into the thrilling world of inclusive sailing! On behalf of the International Hansa Class Association, I thank the team from Southport Yacht Club and welcome entrants to these picturesque waters for the official launch of the Hansa Class Asia Pacific Championships.
“I welcome you all to be a part of our journey as our sailors showcase our passion, skill, and determination on the waves. With our Hansa boats ready and spirits high, we invite you all to witness the excitement firsthand.
“Good luck to all sailors, and thank you to the Southport Yacht Club Officials, Members and Volunteers for what I’m sure will be a fantastic event. Together, let’s embark on this exhilarating voyage towards excellence and inclusivity in sailing!”
Southport Yacht Club Commodore Drew Jones said he was delighted to host this important international event that aligns with Southport Yacht Club’s objective of supporting inclusive sailing for all ages and abilities.
Southport Yacht Club’s sailing headquarters are located on the Gold Coast’s Broadwater, one of Australia’s most dynamic boating playgrounds.
Commodore Drew Jones said “Our inclusive facilities at Hollywell have long been utilised and valued by Southport Yacht Club
Members and Sailability Gold Coast, and we look forward to sharing our hospitality with the international Hansa Class community for all to enjoy the excitement of racing out on the water.”
“Uniquely, Hollywell features a private beach adjoining a secure and spacious grassed area to rig up boats and wheel straight into the water, where skippers are likely to be greeted by the pod of resident dolphins and the occasional shy dugong.”
Commodore Drew Jones said he was also delighted to announce that Hollywell will temporarily expand its marina facilities to ensure inclusive access for all participants at the event, thanks to the generous sponsorship and services supplied by Superior Jetties, a Gold Coast based marina and pontoon manufacturer.
Superior CEO John Hogan said “Superior Jetties are delighted to support this significant event which showcases the importance of inclusive marine access for all ages and abilities. Our floating pontoon solutions provide easier and level access onto and off boats, at all tidal ranges.”
The Asia Pacific 2024 Hansa Class Championships will take place from October 20th to 25th 2024 at Southport Yacht Club’s Hollywell Sailing Squadron venue on the Broadwater and will incorporate the Australian and Queensland Hansa Class Championships. Invited classes are the Hansa 2.3, 303 singles and doubles, Liberty and SKUD18.
Last held in Hiroshima in 2022, the international para sailing event attracted participants from Brazil, France, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Oman, Poland, Sweden, Thailand, Turkey, Japan, Australia and USA.
Power
Greetings Members!
I will soon be stepping down as your Vice Commodore of Power in a bid to become your Commodore. I have been reflecting on what I and my fellow Power Boat Committee Members have achieved through hard work over the last couple of years, and there is much to celebrate.
Members have enjoyed many cruises, with up to 25 vessels participating per cruise and in some cases, waiting lists. Almost 60 boats took part in at least one cruise last season.
We’ve challenged each other during two seasons of Club navigation events, and who could forget our 2022 win of the Goodwill Cup, contested against our friends at Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron. Along the way we introduced to navigating a new method of scoring, a rock-solid handicapping system and a fairer approach to ticketing and entry. The new scoring method addressed the equity concerns of displacementspeed vessels, but it can be argued that it has disadvantaged planningspeed vessels. Who knows, perhaps in future our navigation events could all be scored on handicap results only?
Building on the Club’s traditional power boat activities, we then launched some completely new events, like introducing the Poker Run concept to SYC and more recently, PWC Social Rides. Both new events have so far received rave reviews from the Members who participated in them.
At this stage there is one Poker Run per year with scope for more, and in the upcoming power boat season, we will hold up to six PWC Social Rides. At least one of those PWC rides will see our riders making their way up to Canaipa where we hope to meet over lunch with a bunch of PWCriding members of our reciprocal club, RQYS – how good is that! We are looking for a bit of help in leading those rides, so if you are able to share your knowledge and expertise with PWCs, please contact me via Main Beach reception.
One thing we continue to be challenged by is the lack of a junior power boating pathway. We’ve discussed ideas like getting some tinnies and teaching kids how to operate them (akin to learning to sail I guess), trying to harness the dozens
of cadet-age kids who drive boats around the Broadwater every weekend, or getting more kids involved in navigation events. So far, we haven’t landed on the best way to proceed. I feel this is something future Power Boat Committees should continue to think about given the average age of our navigators is in the 60’s and cruisers, probably in the 70’s. After all, there are other forms of power boating that would appeal to juniors and could readily be adopted by SYC, we just need to think a bit outside the square and say, “Why Not”.
During my tenure as VC, I have also started to transition to the Club, the administration of power boating. Again, hopefully in future, more of this administration can be taken on by the Club to free up our Volunteer Committee Members.
Thank you to our loyal Power Boat Sponsors Precision Marine Maintenance, BMS and XXXX, and our emerging Sponsor, Short Marine. The support of these firms has helped us deliver a successful power boat season, so if you have an opportunity to support them with your business, please make them your first port-o-call. Contact details are available through the office.
Power Boat events could not be held smoothly or safely without the invaluable assistance of dedicated Volunteers, who give freely of their time to create memorable experiences for all. On behalf of all power boaters – we thank you.
Thank you also to our Membership Manager and other helpful staff who assist in making SYC power boating possible for all Members to enjoyyour help is also greatly appreciated.
This year’s Power Boat Information Session is on Wednesday 26th June. At these sessions, we provide an overview of power boat events on offer to Members, with the Power Boat Committee on hand to answer any questions you might have about participating. A reminder will come out in e-news closer to the event.
I encourage you to keep up to date by visiting the Power Boat calendar on the SYC website and monitoring our SYC Power Boats Facebook group page, which has about 150 followers now, and benefits from informative posts from a growing number of Members and Supporters.
Someone told me the other day that it’s illegal to drive your boat outside the marked navigation channel – it’s not! Here are few quick Queensland regulation reminders to settle other bar debates:
• All vessels with an engine of 4hp or more must be registered (conditional exclusions apply for tenders).
• Skippers are responsible for carrying appropriate safety equipment. Different safety equipment may be required depending on where you are using your boat, what time of the day you are using your boat, and how long your boat is. There are also items that must be carried and those that should be carried.
• You must have a marine licence to operate a boat that has an engine power greater than 6hp.
• To obtain a Queensland marine licence, you must be at least 16 years old.
• To operate a personal watercraft, you must hold a recreational marine licence and a personal watercraft licence.
• If there is a supervisor with a valid marine licence on board, anyone can operate a boat or personal watercraft without a licence.
Take care, power boat safely, and I’ll see you in the Club or on the water very soon.

The Yacht Sales Co. Sail Paradise 2024 Regatta
Now in its 15th year, Southport Yacht Club’s flagship regatta and signature event SAIL PARADISE returns in 2024 on the Queensland King’s Birthday Long Weekend in October, following a wildly successful event last year.
Southport Yacht Club Commodore Drew Jones said he was delighted to announce a fresh new look for the event and the signing a multi-year sponsorship deal with The Yacht Sales Co, Asia Pacific’s leading yacht sales company.
“Our new naming rights sponsor, The Yacht Sales Co have a long history servicing the Gold Coast yachting community and have been involved in supporting the Club on smaller events. We are greatly appreciative of their increased contribution to propel this flagship event into the future.”
CEO of The Yacht Sales Co Mark Elkington said, “We are thrilled to be the new naming rights sponsor of Sail Paradise and look forward to partnering in a larger capacity with Southport Yacht Club over the coming three-year period. Our company has a long history on the Gold Coast and as we continue to grow, we wholeheartedly embrace supporting local key industry events like this popular regatta.”
Commodore Drew Jones said he was also delighted to accept the ongoing support from Experience Gold Coast (EGC).
The new event branding, whilst giving a nod to the old, celebrates our city’s iconic skyline and helps raise the profile of the Gold Coast’s appeal as a major event destination to national and international yacht racing audiences.
“The broad interest in yacht racing and sailing in general is growing fast, no doubt assisted by iconic sporting events such as the prestigious Rolex Sydney Hobart race and the global appeal of foiling as seen in the SailGP tournaments.” Said Commodore Drew Jones.
“New generations have caught on that sailing is an exciting, skillful sport which is constantly chasing the absolute cutting edge in hydrodynamic design and innovative technology.”
Bigger and better than ever, last year’s 2023 Sail Paradise Regatta saw the event move to the Queensland Kings Birthday
Long Weekend for the first time, attracting more interstate boats and fostered plenty of activity on and off the water. These are set to return in 2024 in a jam-packed schedule such as the popular ‘Vessel Parade’ spectator event and Fashions in the field event ‘Parade in Paradise’ on Day One at the Main Beach Clubhouse.
Commodore Drew Jones said “The Gold Coast looks forward to welcoming the many skippers and crews returning from the northern race weeks in the Whitsundays, as well as our brand-new ocean race the GCCM Gold Coast to Mackay Yacht Race, into the Regatta this year.”
The Yacht Sales Co Sail Paradise 2024 will be held on Saturday 5th to Monday 7th October 2024.
Entries are now open to all Australian and international boats via The Yacht Sales Co Sail Paradise website, www.sailparadise.com.au.

The new Sailing Season is about to kick off and we would like to thank all our Divisional Reps and VC Sail Glenn Burrell for their efforts in planning scheduling the many events SYC run. Thanks also goes to Steve Murphy, Adrian Bold and Karen Holdway in the office who have also put in significant efforts to get the new season documentation and entry’s all setup.
As many of you know long term Sailing Manager Simon Turpin has finished up his role at the Club and as we transition into a new structure, we would like to thank the Members and Supporters for your assistance, feedback and guidance over this period. Simon will be dearly missed, and he has a long list of accomplishments in his long tenure as Sailing Manager. For the last few months I have been in a caretaker role in Simon’s absence, it has been great to see the spirit amongst the Members supporting the Club’s management in this time of change.
A reminder at the start of the season for all sailors to ensure your documentation is up to date including safety audits, insurance documentation, sail numbers in TopYacht and rating certificates where required. All the divisions continue to see strong growth and it is encouraging to see new boats across all divisions.
Youth Sailing and learn to sail at SYC is a
priority for the Club and the participation report released by Australian Sailing in December 2023 highlighted SYC as the top Discover Sailing Centre in Australia for participation making up for just over 10% of all course participants nationally. Sailing is a great sport that can be enjoyed for life and our Oxenford site is the perfect place to start that journey. The Associates Committee are to thank for many of our learn to sail assets and without their support both in this space as well as supporting the Sailing Development Fund most of our achievements wouldn’t be possible. Recently the Associates joined us to launch 2x new RS Quests which they provided funding for.
A reminder for all sailors at SYC of Rule 46 in the Racing Rules of Sailing, which states “Australian Sailing prescribes that the person in charge shall be a Member of a Club affiliated to Australian Sailing and have an Australian Sailing Number, or, if an international competitor, a Member of Club affiliated to a World Sailing recognised Member National Authority. Furthermore, except in an international event, any crew member who sails in more than 3 races in a season shall be a Member of a club affiliated to Australian Sailing and have an Australian Sailing Number. From 1st January 2022, all persons on board a boat while racing shall be Members of a Club
affiliated to Australian Sailing and have an Australian Sailing Number, or hold a valid Sail Pass, or if an international competitor, be a Member of Club affiliated to a World Sailing recognised Member National Authority.”
In the last couple of months 2 exciting new naming rights sponsors have been announced for our major events. The Yacht Sales Co. Sail Paradise 2024 and GCCM Gold Coast Mackay Yacht Race. We would like to welcome The Yacht Sales Co. and Gold Coast City Marina as major event sponsors and are looking forward to hosting 2 premier events this year.
We look forward to seeing you all on the water for the 2024/2025 season with great memories waiting to be made.

GCCM Gold Coast Mackay Yacht Race
Southport Yacht Club’s national and international positioning continues to rise with the launch of Australia’s Newest Ocean Race, the GCCM Gold Coast Mackay Yacht Race on August 1 this year.
Savvy readers will know this Race is set to start straight after the completion of the Noakes Sydney Gold Coast Race, which the Club has supported CYCA in Sydney with since the opening of the Gold Coast Seaway in 1984, and in the week leading up to the start of many northern race weeks such as Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island.
Already boasting an impressive early-bird entrant line up of some 20 boats, many well-known Rolex Sydney Hobart veterans looking for a qualifying warm up race or a competitive streak up the coast with 24/7 race control, rather than just task delivery.
Entries include 2023-launched international boats such as the all-carbon Mylius 50 footer Daguet 2, brought from France by Rob Aldis from MHYC in Sydney, and Infinity 52 Zeus, which claimed 3rd place in Div 1 in the Honolulu Transpac last year and brought to Australia by Lion Tamer Michael Firmin of CYCA.
Entries have rolled in from Victoria such as Cyan Moon of RBYC, and further north up the Queensland coast too. Ocean Crusaders J-Bird, a TP52 that is known for its all-electric drive and absence of any fossil fuels, has jumped in ready to take on many SYC stalwarts such as Andy Lamont’s Hutchies Yeah Baby, Glenn Burrell’s Black Diamond and both Maritimo 54 and Maritimo 52, the latter which cleaned up at the Geelong Festival of Sails earlier this year with Michael Spies at the helm.
With a start line planned directly off the Cavill Avenue Mall in the centre of Surfers Paradise, the 520 nautical mile up the Queensland Coastline will be as much a sight for spectators as it is a challenge for sailors.
Finish line preparations are tracking well
with a Race Village planned along the Mackay Marina Village foreshore, which is set to light up Mackay with a fantastic atmosphere for skippers, crews, families and locals alike with plenty of on-water on on-shore viewing opportunities.
As Organising Authority, Southport Yacht Club has taken a strategic approach to attracting sponsors who add value to race participants, addressing the perennial needs of skippers and crew who head north to compete at the Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island and Magnetic Island Race Weeks.
Naming Rights sponsor, Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard (GCCM) have snapped up the opportunity to be associated with the Race for the first three years, with an enticing opportunity for race entrants: Any vessel who registers in the new race has an opportunity to receive 20% off their stay at GCCM for their yard visit, this includes any berth, lift, water blast, enviro fee & hardstand for up to 180 days from entering the race. Perfect for some TLC pre or postrace.
Southport Yacht Club Vice Commodore of Sail, Glenn Burrell welcomed GCCM’s support and recognition of the importance of establishing this new ocean race for Queensland. “On behalf of the Race Committee and management of Southport Yacht Club, I would like to thank Andrew Chapman, GCCM CEO and his team for their sponsorship of our new flagship event,” Glenn said.
GCCM Andrew Chapman says “As a group of boaties supporting boaties, GCCM and our marine trade partners have been servicing and rigging sailing boats in the Gold Coast for more than 20 years and we have been increasing our collaboration with race competitors and boat builders as a specific strategy as I share the passion for sailing:
We are the proud sponsors of Southport Yacht Club Members, such as Xavier Doerr who attempted to circumnavigate around Australia last year. We sail weekly on GCCM
Arctic Blonde, a Hick 39 Performance sailing yacht based in Southport and have enjoyed supporting Grant Wharington in the transformation of his 100 foot super maxi for Sydney to Hobart at GCCM” adds Chapman.
Sponsors large and small are continuing to sign up, with Mackay Regional Council and their Discover Mackay Regional Tourism organisation jumping onboard to capitalise on the expected exposure and supporting on-ground logistics, promotion and race village preparations at the finish line. Zhik too have come aboard offering special rates for genuine crew apparel that looks good, dries fast and lasts well.
Further benefits for participants abound, including free multi-day berthing at Southport Yacht Club before and afterwards at Mackay Marina, which is just a short sail from the following Race Weeks and offers abundant space, minimum 4.5m LAT depth and state of the art boat lift and yard facilities for entrants too. Mackay Airport offers convenient access nearby with a large town supply chain, convenient for families wishing to join their crew in the celebrations. Spectator access to the break-water wall, this will be the place to be see the stellar line up boats cross the finish line.
With the generous support of strategic partners and sponsors, the Gold Coast Mackay Yacht Race is set to become the Club’s iconic flagship event and a mustdo fixture on the Australian, NZ and South Pacific sailing calendar.
Keep an eye on the dedicated race website, goldcoastmackay.com and the social pages on Facebook or Instagram for the latest announcements, such as an array of magnificent trophies soon to be revealed.
Volunteers
Selah Leighton Volunteer Yachting Coordinator
Throughout 2024, our Volunteers show cased their commitment to excellence time and again. These remarkable individuals are the cornerstone of our Club, propelling us forward with their tireless efforts, leaving an indelible mark on every event they supported. From the exhilarating NS14 Australian National Championship in January to some of our well-known annual Club races like the notable Cat Weekend and Burleigh Bash, our Volunteers played a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth execution of these events.
The numbers speak volumes about the dedication of our Volunteer team. From January to March alone, they collectively poured over 1050 hours into supporting the Club, both on and off the water. Their professionalism, generosity, and unwavering care for the SYC community continue to inspire us all.
In recognition of their invaluable contributions, SYC has partnered with the Volunteer Firefly app/website. Through this platform, Volunteers can log their hours and earn rewards ranging from discounts on groceries to movie tickets. It’s a small token of appreciation for the immense impact they have on our Club’s success.
In addition to our partnership with the Volunteer Firefly initiative, SYC is thrilled to announce a new collaboration with Emanuel College’s Active Volunteering Program. Through this initiative, students from grades 10 to 12 have the opportunity to contribute a minimum of 20 hours of volunteer service at SYC to earn their Certificate II in Active Volunteering. It’s a testament to our commitment to fostering the next generation of passionate volunteers and leaders within the boating and sailing community.
At SYC, we prioritise the development and empowerment of our Volunteers. From comprehensive training in race management and logistics to specialised courses in Power Boat Handling, Safety Boat Operation, and First Aid, we equip our Volunteers with the skills and knowledge they need to excel. Members Music Marathon
The Southport Yacht Club hosted its most successful Members & Supporters Day to date. Despite a week of threatening rain, the weather turned out to be perfect on the day of the event. Over 600 Members, Supporters, and their guests gathered from various locations to enjoy the MEMBERS MUSIC MARATHON, featuring performances by three music legends on a floating pontoon stage specially brought in for the occasion. Kevin Borich, a founding member of NZ’s hit band ‘The La De Da’s’, kicked off the festivities with an electrifying performance that left everyone in awe. Wendy Matthews, an immensely talented Australian singer-songwriter, delighted the crowd with renditions of her biggest hits, encouraging sing-alongs and dancing. Finally, Joe Camilleri and The Black Sorrows took the stage, captivating the audience with their infectious rhythms that had everyone dancing throughout the Club and on the beach!
The Members and Supporters Day is a complimentary event for our valued Members and Supporters, and this year’s celebration exceeded all expectations. The exceptional musical talent showcased by the three performers, combined with the glorious weather following days of incessant rain, created a truly unforgettable experience that will be cherished in our memories forever.

BUSY TIMES AT THE SOUTHPORT YACHT CLUB MARINA
The end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024 have been exceptionally busy for us at Southport Yacht Club Marina. As always, our Marina has been at full capacity, accommodating not only our regular Members but also visiting superyachts. We’re delighted to note that some of these superyachts have extended their stays, showcasing the allure of our facilities.
Many of the visiting superyachts participated in our Superyacht Australia rendezvous in Tahiti, Fiji, and Ft. Lauderdale, underscoring the success and importance of these events. The presence of Border Force and Bio-security officials has been consistent, ensuring seamless clearance procedures for superyachts and small craft entering Australia via the Gold Coast and SYC. This not only benefits our Club but also contributes to the region’s appeal as a yachting destination.
Managing the influx of vessels, especially during the festive season, presented its usual challenges. However, our dedicated marina staff, including Claudia, Kayla, and Ella, demonstrated their expertise and commitment by efficiently maneuvering boats to accommodate as many Members as possible. Their hard work and dedication are truly commendable, and we’re grateful for their efforts in making the seemingly impossible, possible.
Despite our best efforts, some maintenance tasks around the Marina have taken longer than anticipated. We understand this may cause inconvenience, and we appreciate your patience as we work with contractors to ensure the completion of necessary upgrades and repairs.
As we navigate through these busy times, we remain committed to providing exceptional service and facilities to our Members and visitors alike. Thank you for your continued support and understanding as we strive to maintain the high standards that define Southport Yacht Club Marina.

Sailing Academy Challenge Wells
Smooth Sailing Ahead: Welcoming New Faces and Celebrating Successes
As the winds of change sweep through our beloved Academy, we’re thrilled to announce another season of new beginnings, fresh perspectives, and exciting adventures on the horizon.
The Academy has welcomed a great number of new sailors over the summer period, with the highest number of School Holiday sailors ever recorded, and greater numbers in our Learn to Sail programs, with Adult Learn to Sail courses running every month!
We could not have shared the joy of sailing with as many people as we have without the recent addition of 2 RS Quests and 5 Hobie Waves gifted by our Associates’ Committee. These ladies put their hearts
and souls into our youth, and we are so blessed to have their support.
We are thrilled to announce Sam Martland has taken on the role of Head Instructor for the Academy. Sam’s dedication and expertise have long been evident on the water having sailed since he was 7 and worked as an Instructor from the age of 16. We’re excited to see him steer our team of Instructors to even greater heights.
But that’s not all! Joining us ashore is Ashlea, our new Academy Administrator. With her professional nature and creative flair, Ash is already proving to be an invaluable addition to our crew. producing captivating content for our social media channels, Ash works tirelessly to
showcase our Academy sailors, keeping our community engaged.
If you have yet to meet the team, we invite you to come down to Oxenford Lake this weekend to see them in action, and be sure to grab a coffee from the Boatshed Brew café next door!
See you out there.

Thursday Twilight Division
Peter Karlovic
Ahoy fellow Thursday Night Twilight Sailors and SYC Members,
As our Summer Twilight Season comes to an end, we reflect on another spectacular period of racing on our Broadwater and offshore. We are blessed to be able to sail and race in such a beautiful place. Each Thursday as the sun gets lower, we enjoy the captivating blend of racing, camaraderie, and natural beauty of Broadwater, the coastline, and the Club room banter at our spectacular Club, the SYC.
Offshore racing has proved to be a great experience. The conditions offshore were often very different to those experienced inshore. The wind speed offshore would significantly vary, often much stronger than inshore. This resulted in the offshore boats finishing well ahead of their smaller counterparts. Overall, the feedback has been positive. However, as the season progressed, offshore struggled with participating numbers declining. There were several reasons for this, such as boats unavailable to race due to other commitments and conditions not suiting all boats all the time.
As usual the inshore racing was challenging. The tides and shallow waters certainly make for fast and intense sailing at times, something the offshore yachts don’t have to contend with. To the uninitiated, racing inshore looks ideal. The reality is very different. The tide, moving sand bars, commercial traffic, tight channels, and fluky winds make racing very challenging. I am often reminded of this whilst chatting to other experienced skippers and crew. They confirm that sailing in our Broadwater is some of the most challenging sailing they have done. Most of us would agree. Despite these challenges we had a great season of close inshore racing. At the time of writing, we are yet to see who will end up on the podium for the Summer Series.
This leads me to acknowledge one of our most competitive smaller boats and their success. Lea Foster skipper of Circe and her all-female crew recently won the Brisbane Women’s Cup. Lea is a fantastic Twilight competitor and it’s great to see her and her crew winning in Brisbane. Congratulations!
As we leave the Summer Series behind us and look to the winter season, the Sailing Committee has met and reviewed the decision of splitting the racing into Offshore and Inshore. After a series of meetings and passionate debates, we have decided to cease the Offshore Twilight racing for winter. All racing will be
done inshore. I would like to acknowledge the work of everyone on the Committee who has been involved. Barry Berg has proposed some new courses which we have adapted. Each division will have their own start, with the divisions selected by performance, and I would like to remind everyone that out start times will be changed from 1530 to 1500 for winter.
At the time of writing, we are saying goodbye to Simon Turpin. Simon has been our Sailing Operations Manager for many years. After 10+ years in the sailing office, his leadership, experience and commitment will be missed. He has worked tirelessly at Hollywell, Oxenford and Main Beach to maintain the highest standard of training. His guidance is evident throughout, from our youth programs through to managing our major sailing events at the highest professional level. He is a friend and a colleague who has always got time to answer silly questions. After answering, he often follows it up with “of course Peter, you could always read the S.I.’s!” As a fellow sailor and a friend, Simon will be missed, and I wish him all the best in the future.
As always, I would like to thank our sponsors. Evolution Sails has sponsored the Offshore SummerSeries while Document Solutions has sponsored the Inshore Summer Series. Thank you.
The Volunteers who help us race each week, rain hail or shine. Without them we would not be able to race. A big thank you to John and the team.
Finally, to the SYC Board, Commodore Drew Jones, Vice Commodore Sail Glenn Burrell, and management, to all the skippers and crew and the staff that put up with us every Thursday evening, a big thank you.
Thank you all for supporting another season of our Twilight Racing. Our twilight racing is a spectacular nautical experience. The sun descends over our beautiful expansive Broadwater, casting a warm glow over the water. Where else would you rather be sailing?
Happy fun and safe sailing.

This year so far, the SYC Golfers have played two games at Surfers Paradise Golf Club with 16 players and Emerald Lakes Golf Club with 20 players.
Our April game at Palm Meadows was washed out.
The next game in May is at Murwillumbah over the border, this course is very popular with our players and is only one hour away.
Later in the year, we are playing at Parkwood, Surfers Paradise, Emerald Lakes and Palm Meadows again. These are all local courses and I expect good numbers. 24 Players is what we aim for.
If you play golf and are interested in joining the SYC Golf Group, please contact Kellie Foster in the office and Kellie will pass on your details to me.
Ladies and gentlemen who play golf are all welcome.

Associates Committee
Lois Rowe
On the 1st of May 1974 the Southport Yacht Club Associates Committee was inaugurated This means we are celebrating 50 years on the 1st of May 2024. We are planning as always to have some great functions.
On the 7th of May the Club are hosting a Gala dinner which all the ladies are very excited about.
On reflection of my last three years as President we have certainly raised a great deal of money for youth sailing. This is definitely our passion.
Our first function for the year was held on Friday the 15th of March which is a biannual fashion parade hosted by Debbie Miller and Ann Rivereau. Debbie’s models paraded on the catwalk and around the room for a closer look at the great fashions which were on offer. This event is held twice a year and is always a sell-out.
Our next event is Stallions & Fillies being held Saturday the 18th of May at Aquis Park. These racing events are always very popular, with only 100 guests it will sell out very quickly.
Mid-June sees us off on another “Getaway”, we are heading inland to Canungra where we will stop for coffee and a meander through the local shops. From there we are headed to Overflow Estate Winery for lunch. We have been there before, and it was so well received we decided to go back again. With only fifty seats available you will need to book early. Tickets are available at $130.00.
To our loyal Sponsors who donate wonderful prizes year after year - we thank you for your generosity and ongoing support. It means a great deal for our fundraising and ensures the continued quality of our raffle prizes.
Our appreciation as always, goes to General Manager, Brett James and Katie for their very competent management and administrative team, who play a valued role in helping the Committee to put together everything from raffle prizes to finer details of functions and events
presented by the Committee. They are all highly skilled and very generous with their time assisting the Committee with its activities.
To any ladies out there who have some spare time and would like to become a member of the Associate Committee we would love to meet you. You will enjoy great camaraderie and make new friends as well as help with presenting our functions and selling our raffles if you are interested contact can be made through Reception at the Club.
We look forward to seeing old friends and new faces at our next events.

Butternut Squash, Macadamia and Sage Risotto
Ingredients:
• 1kg butternut squash, peeled and cut into bite-size chunks
• 3 tbsp olive oil
• bunch of sage, leaves picked, half roughly chopped, half left whole
• 1½ litres vegetable stock
• 50g butter
• 1 onion, finely chopped
• 300g risotto rice (I used arborio)
• 1 small glass white wine
• 50g parmesan or vegetarian alternative, finely grated
• 100grms lightly toasted macadamias
Method
• Heat the oven to 220C/200C fan/gas. Toss the squash in 1 tbsp oil together with the chopped sage. Scatter into a shallow roasting tin and roast for 30 mins until brown and soft.
• Gently fry the whole sage leaves in a little olive oil until crisp, then set aside on kitchen paper for later.
• While the squash is roasting, prepare the risotto. Bring the stock to the boil and keep on a low simmer. In a separate pan, melt half the butter over a medium heat. Stir in the onions and cook gently for 8-10 mins until soft but not coloured, stirring occasionally. Stir the rice into the onions until coated in the butter, then stir continuously until the rice is shiny and the edges of the grain start to look transparent.
• Pour in the wine and simmer until completely evaporated. Add the stock, a ladleful at a time, and stirring the rice over a low heat for 25-30 mins, until the rice is cooked al dente (with a slightly firm, starchy bite in the middle). In my opinion the risotto should be creamy and slightly soupy.
• When the squash is cooked, mash half of it to a rough purée and leave the other pieces whole. When the risotto is just done, stir through the purée, then add the cheese and remaining butter and leave to rest for a few minutes. Serve the risotto scattered with the whole chunks of squash, the crisp sage leaves and the lightly toasted macadamias.
