Commodore - Report
Drew Jones
Hi all Members and Supporters. This is my first article as your Commodore. It is with a great deal of pride that I take up the role of Commodore of this prestigious yacht club for the next two years and in this time, I will endeavour to represent you to the best of my ability.
I also thank you for all your support in the last 4 years in my role as Vice- Commodore Sail. The Manager, Brett James and his Management Team as well as the Sailing Office led by Simon Turpin as well as the Sailing Committee have also made my job much easier and I thank them all for their support over this time and look forward to working with them in the next 2 years.
Our Club is in a great position moving forward. The Board has great plans for improvements for the benefit of all Members and Supporters and I am looking forward to being involved. We have started with the completion of the Mega Yacht wharf and now as many will have seen new carpet and tiles in the main Clubhouse downstairs area. These changes only enhance the pleasurable experience for our Members, Supporters and many visitors when dining or just meeting up for a drink. Every year we win awards at the Qld Clubs’ awards nights for our location, food and our service and it is easy to see why. Our Club has now become one of THE places to visit on the Gold Coast!
Along with Qoin Sail Paradise regatta there is a new series of racing organised with SYC, RQYS and QCYC called the Summer of Sail. This will be a series of races to be sailed in the spring and summer. A great step forward for our offshore fleets with more competitive racing available.
Our power boaties are also increasing their participation in both logging and cruising events, and we look forward to them winning back the Goodwill Cup. If anyone wants to join in with their vessel and learn how to log, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Summer is almost here, and Dux has never looked better so Gold Members aim to visit our island venue. Don’t forget to keep abreast of all the events our Club has to offer in the weekly enews as the new season begins in September with the Blessing of the Fleet.
Lastly, I wish to congratulate our Past Junior Vice-Commodore, Addison Newlan on her participation in the Open Skiff World Championships recently held in France. Addie competed in a fleet of 153 and finished 22nd overall, an exceptional result in her first international regatta. She also had a first, a second and 2 third placings in her 14 races. We are so proud of her representing SYC and Australia and look forward to seeing her progression in this amazing sport.
See you on the water
