Reflecting on the last six months around the Club we have seen new yachting events, a new Board elected, and changes in the Yachting Division in line with the SYC Strategic Plan and requirements.

Firstly, I’ll take this opportunity to welcome and thank the elected Board for 2024 / 2025. We have some new faces, and some returning long serving Committee members stepping up into the roles.

Commodore, Glenn Burrell, takes the jump from V.C. Sail to Commodore and he hit the ground running as the driving force behind the very successful inaugural Gold Coast to Mackay Yacht Race. This race has been extremely well received, with expression of interest already from everyone involved for the next years event!

Vice Commodore Sail, Wayne Kirby, stepping up from the Sailing Committee where he has a wealth of knowledge and experience.

Vice Commodore Power, Justin Sinnamon. Justin returns to a position on the Board after a few years on the Power Boat Committee.

Board Member, Lindsay Wallace, has extensive background on various Board and Committees external to SYC, we welcome her input.

Along with returning Board Members, Treasurer Paul Hutchinson, Board Members Garry Edwards, Todd Brooker and Chris Smith. I look forward to working with them all to bring the very best outcomes to Southport Yacht Club, Members and Supporters.

Looking ahead, Board is looking towards to refurbishment of the marina at Main Beach to bring longevity of this facility.

I look forward to seeing the changes around the Main Beach bar as this gets a fresh new look early next year, along with

Chair

Kerry Noyes

the changes to the Pontoon at Hollywell giving more space in a safe environment.

With these exciting projects in the pipeline and more, the Board strive to bring you a premier venue across all four facilities.

Commodore

Dear Members, Supporters, and Friends of Southport Yacht Club,

This is my first inSYnC article as your Commodore. I appreciate you entrusting me with the role of Commodore of our fantastic Yacht Club. As we continue to grow from strength to strength, I will endeavour to steer the ship on a path to future success.

Our 2024-2025 season opened on September 14th with a spectacular Sail Past and Blessing of the Fleet at Main Beach. The following day we saw the Breaking of the Flag at Hollywell and the renowned annual Dash for Cash. We welcomed many distinguished guests who all paid compliments to the Chef, staff and management from both Southport Yacht Club destinations.

No sooner had we opened the season, and our Staff and Volunteers swung into full action with the hosting of our premier Offshore event, The Yacht Sales Co. Sail Paradise Regatta, incorporating the Australian Sailing Queensland Yachting Championships, on the King’s Birthday long weekend. Once again, a very competitive fleet of yachts raced in ideal sailing conditions on our crystal-clear waters of the Gold Coast.

Our Yachting department have been kept busy with staging the extremely successful Hansa Asia Pacific Championships. This allinclusive class allows people of all abilities to compete as one. October 27th was the Annual “Fun Race” the Burleigh Bash, also, gratefully sponsored by The Yacht Sales Co.

I personally, participated in my first Power Boat Navigation event in October thanks to Skipper, Colin Wheeler on his beautiful Integrity 440, Gem. Col, of Document Solutions fame, has been a long standing Sponsor of our Thursday Twilight series as well as many other events throughout the season. I would also like to thank Evolution Sails for sponsoring Division 2 in the Inshore Twilight fleet along with other events including the annual Ladies Day Race.

At the time of writing this article, our Power Boat Division is busily preparing for the Goodwill Cup Navigation event scheduled for Saturday, November 2nd. I wish them good luck in winning back this illustrious trophy from our great friends at Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron.

Entries for this year’s 79th Rolex Sydney to Hobart closed on October 25th. This year there are 5 boats competing under the Southport Yacht Club Burgee. They

include David Hows from Ocean Sailing Expeditions’ latest acquisition, Awen, an Imoca 60 as well as their Birdsall 72, Silver Fern. Saskia Groen-Int-Woud and Maud Dmz will be racing the beautiful Nautor Swan 38, Celeste, owned by Saskia in the two-handed division. Bill Barry-Cotter and crew will be doing it in style on board Maritimo 100, the luxurious Oyster 100 that Bill purchased earlier this year. Finally, J-Bird Ocean Crusaders, the second TP52 to ever be built, will be racing jointly flying the Whitsunday Sailing Club and Southport Yacht Club Burgee, They may even have a certain Southport Yacht Club Commodore, yours truly, on board for the race. I know the Members and Supporters of Southport Yacht Club will be watching the live telecasts as well as the CYCA tracker following all the competitors as they navigate their way to Hobart.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year. I look forward to seeing you all around the Club in 2025.

HANSA CLASS ASIA PACIFIC CHAMPIONSHIPS

Hosting the International Hansa Class Association 2024 Asia Pacific Championships in October has been a highlight for the Southport Yacht Club.

Attracting 80 competitors from 7 countries, the regatta commenced with an Opening Ceremony on the Sunday afternoon of October 20. Attended by VIPs, participants, friends, family and support crew, the ceremony featured a cannon blast to mark the opening, a flag parade of each represented country by boat, and an indigenous dance group who shared stories of how important it was to observe birdlife migratory patterns, breeze and tidal flows on the Broadwater was central to sustaining life long ago.

Hollywell came alive over the following five days of racing, with 9 races in each division completed before strong gusty conditions caused the 10th race in the afternoon of on Day Five to be abandoned.

The Club temporarily expanded its Marina facilities for the event with a floating pontoon to improve inclusive access for all participants. A special thank you to the generous sponsorship and services supplied by Marine Structures, and to Sailability Gold Coast for their excellent coordination assisting participants on the dock.

With such a large fleet spread across four divisions, as well as the many languages and abilities providing many unique communication challenges, our race control, on-water support and media team had an extraordinary week ensuring the Championships ran smooth. Participants from Chile, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Australia, New Zealand and the USA have provided fantastic feedback, as has the Association.

General Manager Brett James

Hello Members/Supporters,

Over the last few years the Mega Yacht Berth has seen some amazing Super Yachts, but the last 6 months did see 2 of the most well-known Mega Yachts visit our Club. MY Venus and MY Bliss arrived at the Club which also saw international news of these vessels not only visiting SYC but Australia. The Captain of Bliss sent a letter to the Board mentioning that SYC has been the best berthing and service he has received anywhere in 20yrs as a Captain. This is a great reward for the Club as years of work and funds have been invested which is now paying off. Last month also saw a 30-metre vessel come from Fort Lauderdale which was a result of a chance meeting at Fort Lauderdale boat show last year. The word is getting out that the Marina team are providing a World Class Facility for all vessels to visit. As I always say keep an eye out for the next big one.

The Sailing Team have continued to shine with “The Yacht Sales Co. Sail Paradise” another great event and a spectacle for the Gold Coast. The Hansa Class Asia Pacific Championship was another huge event based from Hollywell with representatives from 7 countries and over 80 competitors this event was special. The passion the Sailing Team showed, especially Steve

Murphy, Head of Racing to make this event something to remember for all competitors. I could go on and on about what the team produce in sailing and most of you know. Oxenford Water Sports Centre has continued to outperform last year’s figures and still is the largest Sailing Centre in Australia with over 10,000 kids trying to sail. Challenge who is Head of Sailing has grown the site to a stage where I feel we need another lake!!!

The Board have approved the extension to the Hollywell Pontoon which will assist with the volume of boats on busy nights and also a refurbished bar at Main Beach which will start early next year. With the completion of the Main Beach Amenities at both the Marina and Boat Storage areas, the new outdoor building at Hollywell and several smaller projects the Board are always looking to improve which makes the Club great for Members and Supporters and the Staff who enjoy the challenge and change. Most of the projects could not be completed without the assistance of Members with the knowledge in construction, so a big thank you for all your help.

Club events have been out of control with Halloween, Melbourne Cup, Carols, Concerts and New Year’s Eve not far away.

The Club never sleeps so keep on reading the enews and socials as I often get the call “Can you get me in” which we do most of the time.

The Associates Committee once again have an amazing Mega Draw prize to Vietnam, thanks to a great Sponsor Zepplin Travel and APT. If you have seen the prizes, you would be mad not to get a few tickets.

I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome the new Board, thank them for their time, expertise, and passion for our Club. They certainly came into a busy time and have taken it all in their stride as planning and projects continue to come to fruition.

Firstly, my thanks go out to the Members, Supporters and the Club for entrusting me with the role of Vice Commodore Sail. It is an honour, and I will do my very best in this role.

The Club sailing scene is always busy. Back in August we hosted the inaugural GCCM Gold Coast Mackay Yacht Race. We attracted a class fleet of nearly 20 boats for this event and with the enthusiastic support of the GC and Mackay City Councils, the Club highlighted its ability to host a great event and provide some class blue water sailing. The weather for the first day provided an exhilarating challenge with a number of boats suffering some damage. The majority of the boats made it to Mackay where they were greeted with a warm welcome. I must say a beer and hot burger at 3am is a real treat. Special thanks to the Volunteers and Staff from SYC that stayed up all hours to welcome the arrivals. The town put on a mini market festival for the race and the Mackay Mayor is very keen to see this race grow to its fullest potential in the future.

October brought us Sail Paradise. The King’s birthday weekend time slot is proving a great success. The weather was very brisk for the first 2 days then almost a glass out on the last. The event was run in conjunction with the Australian Sailing Queensland Yachting Championships which was hotly contested. Well done

to Glenn Burrell on Black Diamond for winning the Qld Yachting IRC Champs, Steve Curtis on Aramex for the QLD Yachting Champs PHS and Garry Holt on Let’s Get it On for winning the Sail Paradise overall Champion. The many other results are on the Sail Paradise website.

In November we held the Hansa Asia Pacific Championships at our renovated Hollywell Club. Over 60 boats competed, with crews from many countries as well as local and interstate. Racing was held morning and afternoon and a tribute to the race office and the army of Sailability Volunteers for making it all run very smoothly. The Hansa Class has boats for all abilities and able body sailors were competing with and against the Sailability crews. Again, it was hot competition with a lot of fun and rivalry out on the water.

We have our new Sailing Committee for the next 2 years. Barry Berg is once again your Offshore Rep, Steve Furlong is the Thursday Twilight Rep, Tomoko Nakanishi is the Inshore Rep, Wayne Greenwood is the Off the Beach Cat Rep and Stuart Waters is the Dinghy Rep. A great team and we are all there to work with the sailors and the Club to make the most of our sailing opportunities. I’d like to give special thanks to Peter Karlovic who has stepped down from Thursday Twilight after 7 years of great service. He has helped grow and innovate that division.

VC Sail Wayne Kirby

Also I’d like to thank Colin Metcher. After many years of service on the Handicap Committee, Colin is stepping aside. Club sailing lives on their handicaps, and the role of Handicapper is often said to be thankless, but our Handicappers deserve all the praise and thanks we can give. The Handicap Committee for Offshore and Twilight is now just Russell Birse and for the Inshore Division we have Stephen Broadbent and Ross Manning, with myself and Tomoko assisting where required.

Upcoming special events include our annual Cook Island Race, 8 Dec. Julian Rocks return is on 11 Jan and the Ted Elks regatta is scheduled for Australia Day weekend and should be another great event.

With the Christmas Season rapidly approaching I would like to wish everyone a happy festive season and look forward to a bright 2025.

THE YACHT SALES CO. SAIL PARADISE REGATTA

The 15th Sail Paradise regatta was again held on the Queensland King’s Birthday long weekend. Attracting 41 entries with 33 starters, and incorporating the Queensland Yachting Championships, Southport Yacht Club’s exclusively offshore signature regatta enjoyed a brand and media refresh to coincide with Asia Pacific’s leading yacht sales company, The Yacht Sales Co, signing up for a three-year naming rights deal.

A stellar media team captured on water and aerial content of each day of the action, including what was possibly Australia’s first use of a FPV drone in a yacht race. Usually reserved for controlled, stationary environments, our on-water FPV pilot donned goggles and braved seasickness, managing to zip and weave through the start line of sails on Day Three, navigating between many moving variables to capture some incredible cockpit scenes, tight racing, starboard calls and spinnaker hoists.

Meanwhile, our SheSails representative Jasmine Ruck shined as the regatta’s onshore dock interviewer, and screens around the Clubhouse displayed all the fresh antics captured each day. A huge thank you to the entire media team for their excellent production, editing and time management skills to meet the demanding daily schedule.

Congratulations to the Sail Paradise Series Perpetual Winners, Glenn Burrell’s Black Diamond in Division 1, and Garry Holt’s Let’s Get It On Filabe in Division 2. Garry Innes’ Renee won the Michael Daly Award, whilst Steve Curtis’ Aramex won the PHS QLD Yachting Championship. Black Diamond was named the Gold Coast and Queensland IRC Champions for 2024. For full coverage and results, head to the dedicated regatta website sailparadise. com.au, The Yacht Sales Co. Sail Paradise page on Facebook, and the SYC Youtube Channel at @southportyachtclubgoldcoast.

The Yacht Sales Co. Sail Paradise Regatta returns in 2025 on the 4th to 6th October, again hosting the Queensland Yachting Championships. In 2026, Sail Paradise is set to see its biggest year yet as host of the Australian Yachting Championships, drawing a fleet from around the country.

Power

Soon after the initial establishment of the Yacht Club, in 1946, the first thoughts of organising powerboats were seeded, to encourage Members and Supporters to use their boats, to generally socialise, and to help get the trainee sailing squadron off the ground. As a Club, constitutionally, we were obligated to conduct competitive nautical affairs, and ‘Log Events’ were thus started within the Club in 1959.

Log Events have been known by many different names, - currently known as ‘Navigation Rallies’, however all are a test of the navigation skills of competitors. And so in the beginning a small number of boats would line up for the start of an event near the Club, often finishing west of Jumpinpin.

Social cruises were also organised in those very early years – a picnic to Currigee, a fishing competition, and looking after junior sailing were well supported.

Today, SYC has a full calendar of Power Boat events, Including Navigation Rallies, Social Cruises, and other special events such as the Anzac Day Raft Up, Poker Run, Power Boat Information Sessions, and other social occasions. In all, SYC Power Boats currently runs 32 events through a typical ‘season’ (September – June, approx.).

A summary of ‘on water’ events offered this season includes; •7x GPS Navigation Events and BBQ’s • 3 old style ‘traditional’ Navigation Events •11 Social Cruises extending across numerous days to various locations

As always, the camaraderie at SYC Power Boat events is what it is about for many –the socialising and use of their boats on the Broadwater and surrounds with other like-minded boaties, enjoying a social BBQ at SYC Dux or Main Beach, and handing out of prizes for Navigators or Cruisers including those from generous Sponsors. Interclub relations also spawn from participation in other club hosted events, such as the Goodwill Cup, a Navigation event run by Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, which unfortunately SYC did not win (again) this year (but thank you to RQYS for hosting another great event!).

Last year, in the Navigation Rallies, we trialled the introduction of a new scoring system, measuring competitors scores in ‘metres’ rather than ‘seconds’ which has been a success, evening out some of the

VC Power

advantages and disadvantages between fast, and slower boats. Club traditional events this season, are being trialled to attract additional entrants by running as a return course to home after a lunch at Dux, which has so far been successful after dwindling numbers over more recent years.

Social cruising continues its momentum in popularity, routinely attracting close to 25 boats per social cruise. It’s no wonder when the destinations are considered –places like Kooringal, Tweed River, our Club favourite Dux, and the other wonders in our backyard. The camaraderie on these well organised cruises is excellent, and can go on for many days depending on the length of the cruise.

Junior sailing is still well supported by SYC Power Boats, though now days the Club owns its own fleet of power boats, including many RIB’s, a fibreglass cat, and a monohull alloy cruiser called ‘PC Mal Wood’ (formerly named ‘Finky Dink Too’) which was owned by past member, Past Commodore Mal Wood who had the boat purpose built for navigation events, going on to win Club Championships with his dedicated crew.

The challenges faced by our Members in those early years included sandbars and a lack of navigation aids, and while our waterways still remain a series of interconnected ‘gutters’, our passage through them is now vastly assisted by modern technology and well placed beacons. Today’s challenges stem from the increasing popularity of our waterways, including some users who forget (or don’t care) that the way they operate their vessel affects those around them.

In acknowledgement of our rich Club history I must acknowledge the research of fellow past Club Member George Allan Roots in his preparation of Club publication ‘A History of Power Boat Predicted Log Events Within SYC 1959-2004’, and also past Member Dennis Watt in publication of ‘The Next Chapter’ 2004 – 2015 which contributed to portions of detail in this article.

The Power Boat division of SYC strives to bring you safe and responsible boating and looks forward to continued and growing Member participation and enjoyment this coming season, along with new adventures and forging new relationships.

I look forward to getting to know you all around the Club and on the water over the coming season. Please feel free to come and say hello if you feel so inclined.

The 2024/2025 Racing Season has been action packed with several major events already behind us we look forward to more events and regular Club sailing to come. A standout event this season was the 2024 Hansa Class Asia Pacific Championships, held at SYC’s Hollywell location. Sailors from around the globe, including Chile, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, and the USA, gathered for an exhilarating week of racing. This prestigious event not only brought together top competitors from across the Asia Pacific but also highlighted the international reputation of SYC as a premier destination for competitive sailing. This event was made significantly better with the improvements to the bistro area proving to be the perfect space to host an inclusive event. A special thanks to Steve Murphy the SYC Head of Racing and his team of Staff and Volunteers who put in a significant effort making this event possible.

Both the GCCM Gold Coast to Mackay Yacht Race and The Yacht Sales Co. Sail Paradise events were resounding successes, with sailors and spectators alike enjoying a thrilling competition on the water. These major events, supported by our

incredible Sponsors, The Yacht Sales Co. and Gold Coast City Marina, showcased the best of the Australian sailing scene. We are grateful to our Sponsors for their generous support, which played a key role in making these events so successful and ensuring they continue to be highlights of the sailing calendar.

We are proud to see continued growth across Sailing divisions of SYC. The energy and enthusiasm from both new and returning sailors are evident, and we’re excited to welcome more boats and competitors to the Club this season.

The Sailing Academy at SYC continues to lead the way, reaching full capacity with our Tackers 1 course at over 45 young sailors. A special thank you goes to our Associates Committee, whose generous sponsorship of our 2-for-1 Tackers promotion made this opportunity more accessible for families, helping to lower the barrier to entry and encourage participation. Over 29 SYC Academy Sailors competed at the 2024 Zhik Youth Sail Queensland, held at Keppel Bay Sailing Club in Yeppoon. The event attracted some of the best young talent from around the country, with SYC

sailors delivering impressive performances across the different fleets. The event was also attended by Olympians and elite sailors, providing our Academy Sailors with invaluable exposure to the highest level of competition.

As we move into the 2025 end of the season, we are excited for the many more memorable moments yet to come. With a continued commitment to growing the sport and bringing together sailors from all walks of life, we look forward to welcoming more Members and Supporters, participants and spectators to our events. Whether you’re racing in one of our major regattas or enjoying a casual sail with friends, there’s no better place than SYC to be part of the sailing community. We look forward to seeing you on the water.

Volunteer Yachting Coordinator Selah Leighton

Throughout 2024, our Volunteers showcased their commitment to excellence time and again. These remarkable individuals are the cornerstone of our Club, propelling us forward with their tireless efforts, leaving an indelible mark on every event they supported. From the exhilarating NS14 Australian National Championship in January to some of our well-known annual Club races like the notable Cat Weekend and Burleigh Bash, our Volunteers played a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth execution of these events.

The numbers speak volumes about the dedication of our Volunteer team. From January to March alone, they collectively poured over 1050 hours into supporting the Club, both on and off the water. Their professionalism, generosity, and unwavering care for the SYC community continue to inspire us all.

In recognition of their invaluable contributions, SYC has partnered with the Volunteer Firefly app/website. Through this platform, Volunteers can log their hours and earn rewards ranging from discounts on groceries to movie tickets. It’s a small token of appreciation for the immense impact they have on our Club’s success.

In addition to our partnership with the Volunteer Firefly initiative, SYC is thrilled to announce a new collaboration with Emmanuel College’s Active Volunteering Program. Through this initiative, students from grades 10 to 12 have the opportunity to contribute a minimum of 20 hours of volunteer service at SYC to earn their Certificate II in Active Volunteering. This partnership not only strengthens our ties with the local community but also provides invaluable hands-on experience for young individuals eager to make a difference. It’s a testament to our commitment to fostering the next generation of passionate Volunteers and leaders within the boating and sailing community.

At SYC, we prioritise the development and empowerment of our Volunteers. From comprehensive training in race management and logistics to specialised courses in Power Boat Handling, Safety Boat Operation, and First Aid, we equip our Volunteers with the skills and knowledge they need to excel. Additionally, access to online Australian Sailing courses ensures that our Volunteers stay up to date with the latest industry standards and best practices.

If you are interested in supporting Southport Yacht Club’s sailing, and would like to be a part of our inclusive volunteering community, you can reach us at volunteers@sycgc.com.au.

GCCM GOLD COAST MACKAY YACHT RACE

Southport Yacht Club earned a place as one Australia’s best yacht clubs this year, with the successful delivery of Australia’s newest ocean race; the GCCM Gold Coast Mackay Yacht Race 2024.

Against the dramatic beachfront skyline of Surfers Paradise, a strong sou’westerly breeze and a two-metre swell launched the fleet of 20 starting yachts to a spectacular spinnaker start off Cavill Avenue. Grant Wharington’s 100 footer Wild Thing 100 soon led the fleet downwind, tracing the Rhumb line towards the tip of K’gari. However strong conditions off North Stradbroke Island proved too much for three boats who were forced to retire on Day One, Hutchies Yeah Baby lost their mast and rig on their first gybe and Mayfair lost their lifelines, whilst Clockwork lost their rudder and required SYC assistance to return through the Seaway overnight. All boats and crew returned safely ashore.

By Day Two, the Race control, Village and Media team were in Mackay, setup ready for the arriving fleet. All eyes were on the Live Tracker, official online updates and Grant Warrington’s Supermaxi Wild Thing 100’s boat speed, as it carved its way through the islands. By nightfall, Grant and his crew took Line Honours, setting the pace at 35 hours and 35 minutes - the record to beat next year! The inaugural GCCM Line Honours Perpetual Trophy was presented on the docks at Mackay Marina Village that night, by Past Commodore of Southport Yacht Club Drew Jones, and Mackay Regional Council Mayor Greg Williamson.

Greg Alders’ Crowther 50 cat Top Gun crossed the line a few hours later 0241 hours (2:41am) on Day Three. By 3pm, Geoffrey Hill’s Antipodes and Ian and Annika Thomson’s Ocean Crusaders J-Bird crew were ashore and soaking up the sunshine, burgers,

beers and hot showers. Offshore, a two-way tussle had formed between Mat Williams’ Trouble+Strife and Ian Edwards’ Wings, each carefully choosing their path through the islands on offer in a bid to gain the advantage. David Rose’s Wedgetail crossed the line at 1716 hrs, shortly after Daguet 2 and Black Diamond. The battle between Trouble+Strife and Wings continued right to the finish line, with Mat Williams’s crew finishing at 2126 hrs, just 9 minutes ahead of Ian Edward’s crew at 2133 hrs.

NOVEMBER ENTERTAINMENT

GCCM Gold Coast Mackay Yacht Race ...CONTINUED

The night into Day Four saw a procession of a further six boat arrivals, dock parties and stories around the overnight BBQ. Shenanigans and mishaps enroute were shared in what shaped up to be a very fast race to Mackay, with many boat speed records smashed. GCCM Arctic Blonde crossed the line at 2313 hrs on Day 3. After an elapsed time of 61 hours and 13 minutes, Skipper Peter Cook’s crew were reunited with the Mayor of Mackay Regional Council Greg Williamson, who had ‘walked the plank’ minutes after the start on the Gold Coast.

Amaya II crossed the line at 0134 hrs on Day 4, with an elapsed time of 63 hours and 34 minutes, whilst the Damien Parke’s TP52 Denali, after breaking their boom and losing a steering wheel near the top of North Stradbroke, continued to race under trisail to Mackay! Skipper Damien Parkes kept his crew calm and collected, cruising across the line at 0222 hrs. After being at sea for 64 hours and 22 minutes, the team were in high spirits given their circumstances. The graveyard shift welcome party thought they were worthy recipients of a well-earned bottle of Sarina Sugar Shed Liqueur for finishing, as did Race Control who awarded them a special recognition of seamanship at the Race Presentation.

Cyan Moon from Royal Brighton Yacht Club in Melbourne brought a cold snap to Mackay in the early hours of Day 4, crossing the line at 0437 hrs with an elapsed time of 66 hours and 37 minutes, whilst Stuart McLeod’s Sun Fish brought the dawn sun with them, crossing the line at 0604 hrs on Day 4 with an elapsed time of 68 hours and 4 minutes.

Maritimo Katwinchar, the smallest boat in the fleet crossed the finish at 0821 hrs on Day 4, dropping their spinnaker for the first time since Michael Spies and Peter Vaiciurgis had set it from the start line some 70 hours and 21 minutes earlier. An impressive Rhumb Line competitor!

The final boat to finish the race and dock, Phillip Bell’s She crossed the line at 1409 hrs on Day 4, some 76 hours and 9 minutes after the start line off Cavill Avenue. Immediately after their arrival, the Race Presentation kicked off in the Race Village on the Marina foreshore outside Sails Sports Bar, with formalities thanking Sponsors, Supporters and Volunteers for their assistance and dedication towards making this new race a permanent addition to the Australian yachting calendar. It proved to be almost a clean sweep for the doublehanded crew aboard the rebuilt 1904 classic 32 footer Maritimo Katwinchar, Michael Spies and Peter Vaicuirgis, who took out 1st place in IRC, ORC and PHS.

Greg Alder and his crew on Top Gun earned the Jamie Morris OMR Perpetual Trophy, crossing the 01:17:39:44, also winning second place on Line Honours.

Taking out the GCCM Perpetual Line Honours Trophy was Grant Wharington and Adrian Seiffert’s Wild Thing 100, with an impressive elapsed time of just 35 hours and 36 minutes (01:11:35:59). Grant and his crew’s achievement will be the record to beat.

To revisit all the coverage, highlights and results, head to the dedicated race website goldcoastmackay.com, the GCCM Gold Coast Mackay Yacht Race page on Facebook, and the SYC Youtube Channel at @southportyachtclubgoldcoast.

As we look to 2025, we are pleased to announce that Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard (GCCM) have secured the naming rights of this race for the next three years! The yachting team at Southport Yacht Club has learned a lot from the inaugural race to ensure this event becomes even better and a major must-do fixture on the Australian/ NZ yachting calendar. Over 10 boats have already pledged to race next year, before entries have even opened!

SYC Marina Growth, Excellence & Service

2024 has been an exceptional year for Southport Yacht Club Marina, as we’ve seen the docks bustling with activity and our facilities operating at full capacity. Our Marina not only accommodates our valued Members and Supporters but also draws visiting superyachts, many of which have been so captivated by our Marina that they’ve extended their stays. These returning visitors highlight the charm and quality of our facilities, which continue to set Southport Yacht Club Marina apart as a premier yachting destination.

This year, the Marina had the privilege of hosting several superyachts that participated in the prestigious Superyacht Australia rendezvous in Tahiti, Fiji, and Ft. Lauderdale. The attendance of these magnificent vessels underscores the importance and success of these international events, reflecting Southport Yacht Club’s growing global reputation. Our partnership with Australian Border Force and Biosecurity officials has also been crucial, ensuring smooth clearance procedures for yachts arriving in Australia. Their dedicated presence at our Marina reinforces the Gold Coast’s appeal as a welcoming and well-organised yachting destination.

Handling the increased number of vessels, particularly during the festive season, has posed its usual challenges. However, our dedicated Marina team, Dockmaster Sean Riddell, Staff Members Claudia, Kayla, and Ella, have worked tirelessly to maximise capacity, accommodating as many Members, Supporters and guests as possible. Their commitment and skill have made even the busiest days seamless, allowing everyone to enjoy their time here without a hitch.

In addition to managing this influx, we also completed several upgrades and repairs to our Marina facilities, much to the satisfaction of our local Members, visiting yachts, and the crews and skippers who participated in various sailing races and regattas. These enhancements reflect our commitment to maintaining high standards and providing a welcoming environment for all.

As we look forward to another year of growth and activity, we remain dedicated to offering an exceptional experience to everyone who enters Southport Yacht Club Marina. We extend our heartfelt thanks to our Members and Supporters for their continued understanding and loyalty as we work to make Southport Yacht Club a world-class marina.

Sailing Academy Challenge Wells

As we move into the new season, we are thrilled to announce a summer of growth, opportunity, and exciting new challenges for all sailors at the Academy. With a robust calendar of events and an expanding roster of programs, this season promises to be one of our most dynamic yet.

This past season has been marked by significant milestones, including the largest intake yet for our Tackers 1 course, which saw over 45 children join us to learn the fundamentals of sailing. This remarkable increase in participation was made possible by the generous support of our Associates’ Committee, which sponsored the popular “2 Kids for 1” promotion. Their continued commitment to fostering youth sailing has helped ensure more young sailors can experience the joy of the sport.

Our Teen Learn to Sail program, Out There Sailing, has also experienced tremendous success, with a record 24 youth transitioning into the Out There Fleet program at Hollywell. These young sailors are now honing their skills every Saturday throughout the school term, building both their sailing abilities and their love for the water. We are excited to see this program continue to thrive and look forward to the growing number of teens joining us in the future.

On the adult side, our Learn to Sail courses have seen unprecedented demand, reaching full capacity. This surge in interest has been inspiring, and we are proud to offer new opportunities for adult sailors to progress through to our Hollywell and Main Beach Keelboat sessions and courses. Whether you’re just starting or looking to refine your skills, our adult programs offer a perfect pathway to deeper engagement in the sport.

One of the season’s standout achievements was the participation of 29 SYC Academy sailors at the 2024 Zhik Youth Sail Queensland Regatta, held at Keppel Bay Sailing Club in Yeppoon. A special thank you goes to The Moreton Group for their generous sponsorship of the SYC Academy Sail Racing Team. Their support enabled the provision of rashies and bibs, along with essential training and regatta assistance. This sponsorship also allowed our race coaches, Sam and Ben, to provide valuable on-water support, ensuring our sailors had expert guidance throughout the competition.

Additionally, two junior squad SYC Academy sailors were selected for the prestigious Australian Optimist Development Squad (AODS) prior to their participation in the 16th Eastern Seaboard Regatta at the Royal Varuna Yacht Club in

Pattaya, Thailand. This recognition is a well-deserved acknowledgment of their hard work, dedication, and potential in the sport, marking a major milestone in their sailing journey.

With so much happening on the water this summer, we invite everyone to come down to Oxenford Lake to witness the action firsthand. Whether you’re participating in one of our programs, supporting a friend, or simply enjoying the atmosphere, there’s always something exciting to see. And be sure to stop by the Boatshed Brew café next door for a wellearned coffee after a day on the water.

Here’s to another incredible season of growth, learning, and adventure on the water. We look forward to seeing you on the lake!

OPENING ACT .

Thursday Twilight Division

Steve Furlong

Hello Thursday Twilighters, SYC Members and Supporters,

As the days get longer and the weather warmer our Twilight Sailing Season is well underway and I would like to introduce myself to those who may not know me. Born and bred on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, my wife and I moved to the beautiful Gold Coast 20 years ago with our 4 children and proudly call this place home. I have been sailing out of SYC for nearly ten years, owing a beautiful old Compass 29 named Saskia II which I have raced regularly both Inshore and Offshore until just recently and I can now be found aboard many other boats, racing wherever and whenever possible. My love of sailing gets stronger every year and I feel honoured to be able to represent the skippers and crew on the Sailing Committee.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the outgoing Thursday Twilight Representative Peter Karlovic for his amazing efforts over the last 7 years representing the Division. All the hard work he has done has placed us in a great position and the fleet is looking better than ever. I have some big shoes to fill and I thank you all for your vote of confidence. I would also like to thank Jess Greenwood for nominating for the role and the support she has afforded me so far. Jess is doing such a great job with our Adult Learn to Sail and Sail Pass participants each week, finding boats for them to sail on as a way of introducing them to our fleet and the Club and further strengthening the crew resources for our skippers and boats.

I would also like to congratulate Glenn Burrell on his appointment to Commodore of SYC and to Wayne Kirby as the Vice Commodore of Sail respectively. With these two gentlemen steering the ship our Sailing Divisions will continue to thrive.

Our 2024-25 Twilight Season has seen the Winter Series run and won with Russell Birse and crew aboard his X Yachts X38, X Vitesse winning a tightly contested 14 races in Division One by just two points, ahead of Greg Watson’s Jeanneau Sunfast 360, Touche, with Greg Tobins Sydney 38 coming in Third, another 3 points behind. In Division Two, Colin Metcher’s Noelex 30, Cool Change comfortably won the series ahead of Mark Sanders aboard his Davidson 34, Destiny with Peter Karlovic’s Cavalier 30, Rumba rounding out the podium.

At the time of writing our Spring Series is at the halfway mark and again, the weather is warming and the days getting longer. The winds have been shifting to the North and getting stronger making for some exciting racing on the beautiful Broadwater with Rick Billson’s Impulse X leading Division One, ahead of Greg Watson’s Touche and Barry Schoonenberg’s Makani. In Division Two the smallest boat in the Fleet, Alan Scotts Folkboat 26, Raye is on top of the standings with Lea Forster and her crew on Circe holding onto second place, just ahead of Philip Bell’s Olson 40, She.

Each Thursday evening at the Club, our Presentations are supported generously by our Sponsors, Document Solutions and Evolution Sails. Colin Wheeler and his team at Document Solutions have been providing printing solutions to business for over 22 years, and in my personal experience with them, do a great job of it too. Evolution Sails needs no introduction, they are one of the great sail lofts of the world, and Caedric and Joel do a fantastic job of not only making sails but supporting the Club in so many ways. Thanks to both businesses for your ongoing support of the Thursday Twilight Division.

I would also like to thank all our wonderful Volunteers, who without their dedication to our sport, would make racing each Thursday much more difficult and costly. Each and every one of them gives up so much time to our Club and for you, our Member and sailors, and for this we are extremely lucky and grateful.

Finally, to the Board, Sailing Committee, Management and Staff of SYC, thank you all for your support of the Thursday Twilight Division. I’m sure all the skippers and crew appreciate the work that you all do.

Happy Sailing and see you on the water,

SYC Golf President

I am thrilled to report that we have had a great year with many new golfers wanting to join our golf day.

Except for two rain washouts we have had full fields and competitive golf.

At present, I am seeking new golf venues for 2025 and hopefully, I can secure golf courses and let everyone know by December where we are playing. From February next year, we try to book golf on the second Monday of the month.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas.

Associates Committee

We have certainly had a very busy few months with our 50th anniversary.

Our getaway to Overflow Estate Winery was a great success. As usual we were served a decadent 3 course luncheon. The atmosphere and scenery were exceptional. Our stopover at Canungra was also very interesting. Visiting all the eclectic shops that the country offers.

September, we had one of our amazing Fashion Shows. This was hosted by Debbie Miller and Ann Rivereau. The breathtaking opening was staged by Sonia Stradiotto. It was truly enough to take one’s breath away. The whole day as usual was a great success.

Mega raffle is happening now. It will be drawn in December at our annual Christmas function. If you haven’t got your tickets make sure you get some. Over $19,000 worth of prizes. First prize is a cruise through Vietnam and Cambodia. Not to be missed.

Halloween was another fun night for young and old. A disco was held and wow the children had the best night. The costumes were truly amazing. The effort some people go to is inspiring.

Thank you to all our sponsors who donate wonderful prizes year after year. It means so much to our fund-raising efforts.

Our appreciation as always goes to our General Manager Brett James and Katie Lister for their very competent management. The whole administration team are definitely an asset to the associate’s.
